Hello /o/, I have been learning to drive stick for the past few months and am getting better every time I go out. However, as I get better the more apprehensive my parents seem to be about me getting a manual car. They just go on and on about how horrible they are to daily drive. Are they really that bad or are my parents just bitch made?
Depends on your commute tbqh.
>>28975875I work from home
>>28975873depends entirely on how many stoplights/stop signs are on your route
>>28975873unless you plan to daily an old lambo with a stone clutch, it's literally finedon't listen to boomers
>>28975880Then who cares?
Bitch made.In some countries so much time has passed since auto has become the norm that normalfags have been inventing stories about the evil manual transmission of ye olde past.Yes you will have to downshift before a steep incline and yes you will have to learn how to deal with traffic uphill, but that can become second nature as you drive more and more. Also you can invent something about manual being more secure to give them some peace of mind as you can engine brake in case you lose your brakes.
In Europe even the women daily manuals and they do just fine. Are you a less capable driver than an european woman?
>>28975873they're fun.my first car in HS was a manual; i'd never driven stick before, took all of a weekend to figure it out. (With the caveat this was rural, small town eastern oregon -- the learning curve is seriously overblown though.)even in traffic, after the first week of daily driving it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it.
>>28975873bitch made, stop-start traffic was a nothingburger. people that already seethe about stop-start traffic in an auto will not find a manual better. if it didn't bother you in an auto it likely won't bother you in a manual.
>>28975873Theyre just retards. I didn't even know how to drive manual when I got my first manual car. I learned in a weekend and then started doing my (hour long) commute with it with no issues. Its not bad in traffic at all. Never listen to soft pudgy boomers on any subject.
Europe has a bunch of manuals because the automatic option costs more money. ie they're poor
>>28975998>richfags openly admitting they're worse at driving than your average subhumanNot a good look for the top 1%
>>28975873Your parents are incorrect. Manual is all procedural memory, it'll literally become automatic for you. Might want to learn how to heeltoe downshift.
>>28975873Do it. It can be stressful and frustrating but it's not that bad and becomes muscle memory eventually. It's fun to have a skill that you continuously improve on.
>>28975873your parents are bitches, get the brrrrrrrz
>>28975873Driven them my whole life apart from an interlude with a Ford Scorpio V6. Much easier in traffic as you aren't on the brake the whole time trying to hold it back.I have driven lots of autos when renting. Just a bit of a soulless experience in comparison. Carry on with the manual, Anon. They are better.
>>28975963Also manuals are impossible for Amerinigs to steal and they don't know how to drive them away. Not a problem for normally niggers though who all take to the clutch and shuft as well as any huwhite. But seeing as we are having this conversation you are obviously American so being niggerproof is real benefit.
>>28975998
Your parents grew up in a time when manual was a poverty option, and automatics were the latest and greatest thing. Going back to driving a manual car understandably makes no sense to them.
>>28976624now remove all the mexicans and blacks from america (non humans) and what does that wealth buy you? can you get a 3500 sq ft house in norway for $600k
lol when i got my first car my dad was happy because shifting meant it'd be harder to use my phone while driving
I too am just starting to learn manual. I’m getting the hang of it little by little and yes it is satisfying but driving an automatic is simply way easier and less stressful. I wouldn’t drive manual as a daily driver if I could help it. Maybe just something to play with on the weekends. Doesn’t help that no matter how good you think you are at it and no matter how much experience you have, it will stall on you occasionally.
>>28975975Up shifting/down shifting is easy. Starting from a dead stop, low speed maneuvering and getting started on an incline are not so easy.
>>28976815Once you get better it won't feel like an impractical burden. >>28976818I think a lot of people are full of shit on how fast they learned. I'm sure they survived. I'm self taught too and it sucked for awhile.
Also my advice is to double clutch all up and down shifts just for fun>it is more fun>it is smoother>you'll better appreciate and understand the transmission >it makes redditors seethe
>>28976850For real. Every asshole on the internet claims they learned in two hours. Realistically you need to log at least 20 hours before you’re somewhat competent id say.
why do Redditors claim coasting in neutral is badmy uncle in Greece with 40+ years of driving manual professionally in a taxi teaches me to coast in neutral as I’m approaching a red light
>>28976874>why do Redditors claim coasting in neutral is badCuz you're not using your engine to brakeMeaning you're wasting fuel you spoiled child
>>28975873your parents are just attempting to mold you in their image (bitch made). it's been said already, but to reiterate slightly: it's the traffic that sucks, not the transmission. anyway even if you end up hating it you can always resell and a manual commands a premium on the used market. just don't immediately chase forced induction if you're looking into a new BRZ. It is really not as mandatory as some on the internet say it is
>A few monthsnigga, it should take a few days. whoever's teaching you must be bitch made.>Are they really that bad to driveNo, not even slightly. This isn't a race car with an 8lb flywheel and a 2,000lb clutch spring. The only time I could see giving a shit is like stuck on the freeway in LA or OC at 530pm going from first to neutral for 35 minutes. Even still I daily drove a manual in san diego that actually had a light flywheel and strong clutch, i'll take 10% traffic annoyance in exchange for 90% fun the rest of the time any day. fr fr ong
>>28975873driving stick gets worse as you age and your body begins to break down, do it now while you're still young and get all the fast sporty aggressive cars out of your system while you can appreciate them. then when your knees get fucked and your back starts to ache, you can appreciate comfy soft land barges in comparison
>>28976958>when your body breaks downso when you're 50+. anyone claiming their joints are fried under that age is a nancy. same kinda trenchcoat nancy id imagine drives a barge. FACT.
>>28976850I get the feeling a lot of people who claim they learned in one weekend live in rural areas with open roads and never had to deal with stop and go traffic or even driving 5 mph in a busy parking lot.
>>28977280no matter where you live you can have someone teach you in an empty parking lot. literally everyone i taught got it down in 15 minutes.
>>28977280for me i had no idea how to drive but i manual swapped my car anyway, took me a couple days before i found out that it was completely fine to let the clutch slip even for 2 secs. once i kept that in mind it was so much easier; getting going from a dead stop was the biggest hurdle, everything else was really easy to pick up. after that i stopped kangarooing across intersections lol.
>>28975873depends on your car
>>28975873driving manual is an actual skill with a very high ceiling>double clutch (deprecated but might still be useful to know)>shifting without clutch>blip/ down shifts>rev matching>heel toe>manoeuvring on very low speed (think creep into a tight parking space)>hill starts>know (or better feel) which gear is appropritated>fast take offs> and and andif you like actual driving and have an interesting car go manual. if you just need to go from A to B and dont really care go auto
>>28975873After you drive on every day for about a month, it'll be second nature and you won't even think about it
what the fuck is it to do with them
>>28976792>now remove all the mexicans and blacks from americauhh go on then? lol>nooo you can't count themwhy? your country's 60% nig
>>28975873>>28975880your parents are fucking retarded in that case
>>28975881avoid needing to stop on an incline at all costs. it really sucks having to get moving again after the stop, the danger of rolling back & hitting the car behind u, & burning out the clutch. maybe stop well before where u need to.
>>28977448What's hilarious is you care about what the median is. If you're not top 5%, you failed.
>>28976850Learning a skill is not the same as mastering it.
>>28977487I'd say this depends on the incline, but the latest brz/86 has hill hold assist. It is tough when you first lean how to drive a manual though.
>>28975873Depends entirely where you live. I wouldn't fault someone in Los Angeles for choosing auto, at least for a daily but fly over state? No excuse other than you have a vagina and hate cars and driving.
>>28977487that's why you use the parking break
>>28977487Modern cars have hill assist and even if not if you've been driving manual for months hill starts should be trivial.I'm half-convinced the average /o/tist is an absolute shit driver judging by some of the shit they say about how difficult driving manual is. The average Euro woman from grannies to 18 year olds fresh from getting their license can drive stick just fine, sometimes in absolute shitboxes from the turn of the millennium and they do just fine. Hell, when I was getting my license, my instructor had me practice hill starts on the second lesson, it's a very easy thing to get the hang of. You are NOT going to be stalling it occasionally like the other anon says if you have several months of practice, unless you are a shit driver. In which case yeah get an auto.
>>28977506My friend drives an gr86 and he says the hill assist doesn't turn on all the time which is kind of scary to think about if you're a complete noob. >>28977487>avoid a very crucial part of driving manual foreverdont do this>>28977630>You are NOT going to be stalling it occasionally like the other anon says if you have several months of practiceit depends on how shit the car is. with any semi modern car, its pretty impossible to stall it but ive randomly stalled my old small shitbox very occasionally due to a weird throttle pedal and a light flywheel. I wouldnt call myself an experienced manual driver but ive put in at least 20+ hours of seat time.OP prolly not here anymore, but i would go for it if you really want a gr86/brz. the automatic is ancient and dogshit so your only choice is the manual. There are a few cars (370z, g35/g37, pre 2015 bmw) where you cant really have too much fun in the automatic version so if youre deadset on the car, id just go figure it out. Especially if you live in the middle of nowhere. If this is your first car going into college in a major city in california, i would be hesitant though.
it becomes second nature after a month of driving. the only time it can become moderately annoying is in the typical american highway stop and go rush hour traffic where there is a wreck ahead clogging everything up. driving manual actually makes you a more attentive driver. when I got rid of my manual cars and had an automatic, I found myself not paying attention more. manual keeps you engaged.
>>28977796Just hold the clutch and crawl. It becomes not much of an issue other than foot cramps
>>28976874They can't handle the mindset of the croooooozer.Fuck engine braking, real niggas drift to a stop with a nice smooth pedal brake.
>>28975873>They just go on and on about how horrible they are to daily drive. Are they really that bad or are my parents just bitch made?Manual cars are great. The ONLY time when they are a serious problem is if you break one of your legs and can't handle two pedals for a while.A lesser problem is driving in stop-and-go traffic during rush hour or when there's an accident ahead. It does get tiring if you have to keep pushing that gear pedal in and out two or three times a minute for half an hour or more.>>28975880But are you OP? Or are you /o/'s equivalent of "BTW I'm trans"?I think manual transmissions are more engaging to drive. That said, this isn't the 1980s any more, and automatic transmissions no longer suck as much (unless you buy a F*rd or some other brand that has known defective constantly-falls-apart automatic trannies) so don't do that).
>>28976519God I can only imagine how poor and small your shithole country is. I bet you have to boil your tap water
They're not horrible to drive, on the contrary they make driving more enjoyable because you're more engaged in the process. If I was dictator I'd make all cars manualThat said, there are SO many other factors to consider when getting a car and being a stickler about manual is just gimping yourself out of sheer autism. The only justification I could possibly agree with is if you're a new driver and you have something to prove to yourself (or others), and you're willing to admit to yourself that this is why. Probably, you are american and being able to shift all by yourself is seen as a huge flex, because life in general is designed with a "think of the children" mentality that dumbs everything down and your brain is desperate for anything at all that makes you feel aliveOtherwise, pick the car you really want, and if it's available in stick (it probably isn't), then go for it. But don't fuck yourself over just to drive a stick because /o/ said you need one or that they're somehow "better" in a fundamental way
>>28977799>just wear out your clutch bro
>>28976874you are not able to immediately accelerate if you are in neutral, which realistically will probably never be an issue but its critical in an emergency situation (impending accident). also keeping it in gear is more fuel efficient, as you are wasting gas putting it back into gear. at low speeds it makes sense but at high speed i would rather have full control over the vehicle
>>28977487im assuming you live in a flat area if you are afraid of hill starts.
>>28977487is this bait?
>>28975873>They just go on and on about how horrible they are to daily drive.Huge chunks of the world daily drive manual cars. Not only that, most of them have bends you have to slow down for.
>>28975873they're being bitches unless you live somewhere where you are likely to be in a long traffic jam almost every day
>>28975873Your parents are fags.My dad pushed me to drive stick from my first car to my most recent and I’m - grown ass man with two kids. The amount of money you’ll save driving a manual will be worth it.Nissan Versas with relatively low mileage will go for about 10k or less. I’d recommend you get an after school job that you can reliably get $400/mo from (so $500 before taxes and other bs) and go down to a dealership yourself to get a car loan.Bro no in debt is stupid but the money you’ll ultimately save by going manual over auto is tremendous. If you keep up on other maintenance and already have experience on the stick you’ll be able to drive that car until you’re well into your late 20s.
>>28975873They're being bitch made but also a little practical. Remember, when you own a manual, no one can drive your car to help you, or pick your car up for you. When you bring it to a valet for a garage you hold your breath. Lots of stupid little issues go along with rowing your own. Worth it, though? Absolutely. Short-throw shifters on a good transmission is sex on wheels.
>>28976869>>28977280idk i just sat in a manual car for the first time and drove off. sure, i dumped the clutch before it stopped slipping the first time and it was jolty and the finesse to shift smoothly took me a few minutes to figure out but its not hard. prior experience was keyboard and mouse shifting on a shitty driving video game.this was in salt lake city and i commuted with that car for a month before the timing belt snapped.
