Government policies favoring diesel.Diesel being cheaper.Diesel being more efficient (high fuel costs in Europe).Why different from the US?Because gasoline has historically been insanely cheap in the US so none of these were ever a concern. We have a ton of refineries and the highest light crude production in the world. In most of the US diesel is more expensive than gasoline.

Another advantage is that diesel isn't burning as easily as gasoline as it forms no explosive atmosphere.And the motor can run with vegetable oil if needed.Unfortunately many of the other advantages have been lost in modern high end diesel engines which are now more complicated than gasoline engines.
