found and went into my first entrance this past weekend
what am i supposed to have with me going into these things? all i brought with me then was a flashlight. what things do you look for when figuring out if one is too dangerous other than fissures along the walls?
>>

God I wish I lived out west sometimes. The only old mines around here are short gold adits that don't go anywhere.

What state are you in OP? I'm in Oregon, there are plenty of mines out here, but entering one seems pretty sketch.

I really do enjoy your posts. I’ve said in the past the history is just mind blowing to me. Like that newspaper. Just imagining what the person was like that read that back when printed. Would they ever imagine the wood structures they used doing some more than likely back breaking work are still standing today. I’d honestly be too chicken to explore deep into the mines but even just seeing the surface stuff would be amazing to me. Thank you for posting the pictures!

Based OP. love when you pop up; I would love to go carving or into the mines but I get extremely claustrophobic. So probably never for me. I do enjoy the posts a lot though. Ever find any neat mineral deposits or stuff?

Only based thread on this board, good job OP. I went into a mine last month with my buddy, it was the first new one I'd explored in maybe two years, pic related. The mine was quite short, maybe 100 or 200 feet, but it ran next to a river and was gradually being filled in with sediment every time it flooded, so the ceiling got lower and lower until we were nearly crawling. Took my AK and PVS14, but it was miserable enough with white light so I didn't use night vision much. I'm west of the Cascades and none of the mines around here are as intact or elaborate as the ones you posted; kinda jealous, but it also dramatically reduces my odds of dying horrifically in a mineshaft.

Another picture of the excursion, also gonna answer some questions from above.
>>2680244
I prioritize light above all else. I try to have 3 light sources per person. Most of the mines I've explored aren't nearly as complex or cavernous as some of OP's pictures, so I don't expect to be in them for more than an hour. Other than that, just regular hiking stuff to find them, and gloves and a waterproof coat because lots of mines in my area are gross and wet.
>>2682850
Rule of cool. I always hike with a gun anyways.
>>
Completely badass. How deep do these mines go? How much loot is there down those things?
>>
I was going to let this thread die. Glad to see all the interest. I will continue posting as time permits.

I've been in those tunnels. There really isn't much to see

Anyone here near Briceburg, CA? My girlfriend and I were out exploring the remains of the Mountain King mine, and while the entrance is caved in we found two shafts, one of which looks accessible for someone with climbing gear.

Where I live in England there are some mines, but most are over 100 years old, ex coal mines. They have all been capped or sealed, but in some cases people have managed to get in.
It's extremely unsafe. I've seen pictures and videos, bits of the ceiling falling down, rotting wood holding stuff up. I would never go in them.
>>

looks like a surveyors flag. you probably say spray painted lines and numbers on the walls of the mine. Someone came in and mapped the mine.

the circle with an x painted on this timbering was done by a surveyor.

i worked on a drilling crew and one time we drilled through timber, a void, then rock again. everyone was baffled, but i, being sherlock holmes, knew exactly what happened
>>
>>2696508
I heard a story about a drill crew back in the late 70's that were taking test samples (core drilling) next to some old working. After a bit of drilling dirt started to drain down the drill hole. The foreman had them pull the drill and the drove the drill rig away, a few hours later the hole opened up to a very large stope. They were lucky their foreman made a smart call.

Most actual western outists go out with guns in my experience. It's one of the filters to tell who is a transplant and who was raised in the inland west. My mineshaft setup is a G26 and an AR15. In mines that aren't in forested land having a longgun with good glass is useful to spot people driving in from hundreds or thousands of yards away. Most mines near me are forested and I only very casually explore them. The "larp" cope about firearms is mostly from people with zero actual experience in field in the western wilderness and urban adjacent wildlands. People in the wilderness can be weird and hostile sometimes, nearest EMS is often 30-90 mins away. And it's not really much of a larp if it has utility.

t. state with ~150-200k abandoned mineshafts, about 2/3rds of which are in desert or semi-desert and 1/3rd are in forests
>>
does somebody live in these holes or the buildings outside? people must've tried

I don't think you understand the remoteness of these areas. Some of theses counties are larger than New England states with a population below 50k. They would have no real access to anything. No power, no water, no food. These were once entire towns, but they called them boom towns for a reason. Many only lasted a decade or two before it became a ghost town.

I've driven nearly every dirt road in the northern 2/3rds of Nevada. I recognize some of the surface structures from your pics. I've found old as F explosives still in wooden boxes. I hear they are unstable after 100 years so obviously let them be. Seems a lot of the smaller mines were abandoned by the 20's.

The vertical shafts at silver city just south of the Duck Valley Indian reservation are amazing. Beautiful stone buildings falling down. That Silver city (there were many) was a happening place until it all burnt down. You can find Chinese opium pipes in the ruins. And an amazing cemetery filled with children who died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Thanks for the pics. Your Rip
