How can you eliminate rats efficiently?
My barn and yard is full of them. To make the matters worse, the more I eliminate them, the more tend to come. The issue is that my neighboring houses are both abandoned, making them a rodent paradise since the last time anyone came there was 6 years ago.
Poisons from store don't seem to work. They ignore traps.

Imagine gatekeeping the outdoor board on a Uzbekistan home birth forum. Grim.
>>2770782
Get traps, cats, and poison. Set a bait station and let them get used to it and then sit out with a .22 and a spotlight one night.
>>
>>2770788
No shit, bait and shoot works pretty good. Skip the .22 and use a pump action pellet gun. It's still effective, but much quieter. Spread some peanut butter on a fence or wall, sit in the dark, and wait for targets. It's about as close to fun as pest control gets.
>>
>>2770788
Cats are actually quite bad at this stuff despite the stereotypes.

Dogs are vastly superior ratters.
>>
Poison is your only chance.
I hammered 3 inch nails into 2" x 4" boards and put rat poison on the nails. This helped prevent the rats from carrying the poison away. You can tell from the bite marks on the poison cubes how much the rats are eating.
Place the boards with poison around the perimeter of your property. Check the boards regularly so that you know when to put more poison cubes on them.
>>
>>2770944
Poison, animal control (cat or dog best to have both cats should be at least a deterrent and they’ll get the mice at least), traps, a bait station and shooting them, check and fix all foundations and bury wire mesh. Ultimately it’s a losing war man. Those are all methods just to get rid of this wave. Just when you think you’re on top of it another critter will fill the niche and then you’re fighting coons. Get the coons under wraps and the rats are back. Varmits never end.

There are bunch of snake and other big lizards at my place and they ate all the rodents

Yes.

The Rat Terrier wasn’t a recognized breed by the AKC until 2013. It was more a type with a recognized, descriptive name. They were the most common type of dog in the US until the 1950’s, when small farms were replaced with industrial operations. They were popular for this exact reason; pest control.

I’ve taken these two ratting at the breeders hobby farm. I have a third one (tri color piebald) that we got from a rescue, but haven’t had a chance to bring her. The two pictured are acktchually half brothers (different side/dad) but are way different sizes, with one at the very smallest and the other at the very largest. They always have a blast ratting, and it’s pretty wild seeing them do what they’re supposed to do. You can tell that they’re naturally good at it.

Cats BTFO by the superior species. Guaranteed that cat will eat that one mouse then go take a nap. Meanwhile a dog will kill a few dozen several times a day if given the chance. It’s not even a contest yet cats still manage to lose.

literally look on craigslist for free kittens, raise them outdoors by feeding them on the porch till they have reached a sufficient hunting size, then start cutting the rations
the problem will take care of itself

The cat is hunting them to eat, the dog is hunting them for sport
I am a cat person but the dog takes this time...but now you have a pet to take care of instead of a barn cat

Water bucket with a pvc pipe and wire suspended across like a bridge. Smear peanut butter somewhere in the middle.
They slip off the pvc because it rolls on the wire and then tread water until they drown, you can get rid of multitudes in one night this way.
Cheap, effective, automatic. Just empty the bucket often otherwise you will get rat stew.

wild dogs do not survive long without a pack in the woods, they almost always depend on eating refuse from farms
stray dogs do not survive without knocking over garbage cans
neither type lives more than a month on its own, small dogs are prey in the wild to coyotes, along with large wild dogs( also get killed by hunters like me, if the coyotes dont get it first)

none of you have ever raised an outdoor cat, I have, they kill over a dozen small animals nightly if cut loose after dark, this has been thoroughly documented that just a couple half feral cats can impact an ecosystem
they would clear out the rats and then begin ravaging the countryside till they are dragged in by the owner or shot by wildlife management to protect the habitat

if you disagree and refuse to post evidence of your claim in response to this post your mother will die from a pitbull attack this week

>>
>>2773338
Country cats and "urban" cats are almost like different species. A cat that catches its own food looks different physiologically, has different muscle tone, even the fur is more coarse. It walks different because it is at least semi-wild. You can't expect a kitten raised by a wine-drinking auntie to know what the fuck it's doing.
>>
>>2773725
urban cats will occationally drop a dead bird in your lap

country outdoor cats will leave a gophers head on your porch

Just buy a dog.
Poison is dangerous for other species. And traps are dangerous for yourself. Having to physically handle rats is a recipe for disaster. The fleas can transmit the rabies.
Cats won't work. Rats are often their sice, and can face them.
Buy a dog to try to scare them. Some breeds can hunt them down. A neighbour of mine had some terriers and they killed one or two rats each few days.
>>
>>2773087
This, watch Shawn Woods; he has some videos on that kind of trap. When you dump the dead mice and rats it brings in predators too. I'd say get one of those fancy CO2 ones but damn you'll be scooping the rats away all the time as well as replacing the CO2 canister. And those are like $150 lol holy shit.

Cats are good pest control because they require almost no attention and feed themselves hunting. Cats keep the number of pests down. Once you have a full infestation on hand you can either get more cats and wait or you can employ other means like poison or purpose bred dogs.

Get a piece of pipe drill a hole at each run a wire through and up through the holes and twist it off. Take one end out an feed a bunch of baits on there then pop it back through the hole. Rats can go in the pipe and have a feed on the bait but nothing else can get to it an they can't drag bait off somewhere else. Keep checking every few days and feeding the little pricks bait until it stops being eaten. The pipes that plastic wrap for bailage comes on perfect for it if you have them lying around
>>
>>2773087
This concept but with a bucket of oil. The tried and true redneck rat trap is a Home Depot bucket half filled with oil with a yardstick leading up to it.

>have rat problems after the summer rain one year
>remove all food sources
>set out traps
>get two barn cats that are good mousers supposedly
>the cats do nothing but kill songbirds and squirrels
>eventually the rats start returning, trying to find food in my house
>cats continue to do nothing except kill songbirds and squirrels
>the cats also beg for food constantly though I feed them three times a day
>cut back on their food slightly so maybe they'll hunt nice and rats
>they begin murdering baby chickens

My dog(germshep) has a massively higher rodent killcount than our cats(mixed), but she isn't innocent, she kills alot of chipmunks, too.

I believe each have their place;
Our dog is better for outside, she's a killing machine, but she lacks finesse. She can drive herself crazy when she can't get at them, and when she loses her patience, she can become destructive to property trying to get them.
The cats work better inside, if the mouse is hiding, they will quietly wait, and wait, until it exposes itself, its a much more acceptable strategy for work in confined or cluttered spaces.

Look up the rat bucket trap. It's a bucket with water a trick walkway that drops rats in the bucket. Then they drown. Can kill dozens before you dump the water (which you can leave out for the owls safely since no poison). The rat killer guy on YT says it's the best trap he's ever used. Costs like $20 total

Plugging up as many holes as possible to physically keep them out. Dousing stuff with tons of vinegar or peppermint oil will fuck with their sense of smell and ward them off. The main thing is just taking away their food supply, they'll fuck off elsewhere after that, but if there's tons of abandoned houses nearby then who knows what the last owners kept in the pantry.

Killing them only really works if you're able to outpace their birth-rate, which is nigh impossible when they have like twelve pups per litter and hundreds of females per community. It's more likely that they'll just avoid the areas you keep killing them in and give you the illusion of progress; they're pretty smart animals (hence why they keep avoiding the traps).
