I am convinced that lures do not work. I can catch plenty on bait, but nothing has bit one of my lures all year.
>>2771952Rod tubes are very common, stop by your local big box sporting goods store and they should have a selection for you to choose from. Your local fish and bait shops will probably also carry a selection. Amazon also has a lot of them. Finding one that will fit into your checked baggage is an entirely different question. Most are built for 2 piece rods, but I'm sure, if you look, you can find them, for 3 and 4 section rods, but they might be a tad more niche and you'll probably pay a little more for that.
I'd just make one with pvc pipe from the hardware store. Shit's way too inexpensive to not do it. Can cut it perfect length and put a cap on the end. Put a screw on one on the other end. Bolt a strap to it. I made 6 big ass sand spikes with a mitre saw for like $4, ceiling rod racks and shit screwing them to 2x4s. I could see buying the shit if it saved time but these things take minutes to make.
>>2771977just caught a fish on a lure todaylocation is the most important thing though, you're not gonna catch anything if you're not where the fish are
>>2771977Bait is easy, put it on a hook, throw it in the water and wait for the bobber to bob. Bait has flavor that will draw fish in and keep the hook in it's mouth instead of spitting it out once they figure out it's not food(like with lures) Lures require you to provide them a presentation that will be tempting for a fish. If you're fishing in moving water, no bait fish is going to swim upstream to get away from predators, they're going to go downstream, take the path of least resistance. Fish are also lazy, and don't tend to waste unnecessary energy. watch some videos on reading rivers and streams to figure out how to spot seams, pockets and pools. If you're on still water, you might be moving to fast, too slow, fishing too shallow, too deep, fishing where there's no underwater structure for the fish. It's hard to say. If you've caught fish in the same spot, on bait, you're probably in the right spot, it's just a matter of finding a lure and presentation that will work for where you're fishing and what you're fishing for. I fish almost exclusively lures.
>>2771977Are flies lure or bait?
>>2772008lure, bait is mostly organic things, basically food
>>2772010by organic I meant more like things that are alive or dead, I realize flies are made with hair and feathers from living things
>>2772008A tied fly is a lure but if you stuck a horesfly or a cicada on a hook it be bait. Like a rubber worm or a grub is a lures but worms and grubs are bait
>>2772008>>2772022It’s amused me recently to realize a bucktail is basically a giant fly
Biggest rudd I caught yet
>>2772062golden
>>2772075Whhen I go to fish with float I usually catch roaches so it's nice to catchh rudds they are so much more colorfull
How do I catch tench ? These fuckers never seem to take bait no matter if I use feeder float or method.
>>2772075100% rudd
>>2772062Cool looking fish
Let's say I hooked a catfish in the gills and took the hook out along with chunks of the fish the hook was attached to (I'm not an expert, but pretty sure it was parts of the gill, also because it was bleeding from its gills). It's probably safe to say that fish would die if I released it back in the water, right? I figured better safe than sorry and ikijime'd the fish with my knife and used it for bait since that seemed more humane than letting it suffer over the course of a few days.
>>2772142Yes, fish that are bleeding from the gills are guaranteed to die
>>2772142That's just killing it by stabbing it in the brain, not ikijime. Part of ikijime is killing it quickly by taking out the brain, but more importantly is running the wire down the spine to stop the rigor process from setting in. Just because you do part of a thing, doesn't mean you did a thing. You don't even understand to process or purpose.... Fucking first order thinkers....
>>2772145Good to know, I typically keep fish or quickly kill them if I notice their gills are bleeding, just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing it unnecessarily >>2772150Okay autismo, I killed the fish as quickly as possible to prevent further suffering
>>2772150Actually, not only are you autismo, you're a retardhttps://www.ikijime.com/>Either a firm knock on the head or spiking of the brain (called iki jime or ike jime – pronounced “iki jimi”) will kill fish immediately.
If you could do a fishing trip anywhere, where would you go?
>>2772187Years ago I went fly fishing at Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. It was gorgeous and I would love to go back there. I also stayed in Sedona which was equally as beautiful and one guy let me hold his revolver he uses to shoot snakes.
trying to get a used fishing pole off facebook marketplace and its not been great.i got like 2 weeks before my fishing license is approved so not in a huge rush, but i was just at walmart checking out some rods and i liked how light weight the shakespeare rods were, the ugly stick gx2 felt way too massive, i just want something casual and light weight and not some huge thing
>>2772192Are you worried about how much space you have to pack them? Because the ugly stick gx2 I have breaks into 4 pieces and its very easy to pack.I wouldn't really recommend a smaller rod for a newer fisherman because it really narrows the range of your options
>>2772198yeah there are 4 piece ones but the ones listed are 1 piece of 2 piece, im trying to buy a used rod so its slim pickings so you would say the lighter shakespeare rods are way too small for general use?
>>2772200You can use a lighter rod if you want, its just going to be harder/impossible to cast heavier lures which would be most of the stuff typically used for bass fishing. You would mostly be using light jigs and bobber setups, which is not a bad thing. I catch a lot of panfish with that kind of setup and its pretty fun.I would still try to keep it 6ft+ length if you can though
>>2772192what kind of fishing do you plan on doing? gx2 is thick and heavier because it's got a high fiberglass content.
>>2772202ok ill try to atleast get a 6 ft one>>2772203fishing a lake and streams near a lake , its my first time fishing so i dont want to overdo it or go overboard on purchases or heavy duty equipment
>>2772204what's your budget? I'd just get a medium light since you can throw a wider range of stuff. better for a rod to be a bit soft than too stiff.
>>27722046'6"/7', medium light, fast action15lb-20lb braid, 10 flouro leaderyou'll be able to cover a huge range of tackle and techniques and its spinning rig friendlyi can make some specific suggestions if you give me a budget

>>2772330interesting you get paid to map stuff with gps?
>>2772204Dude.. walmart got these ozark trail wayfarer combos for less than $10. If you're not a retard and they're OK for $10. I got one to leave in my truck for the lake, I got no complaints
I want to put on a simple snap-on line wrap(like pic rel) for my new tenkara rod but the rod is too thin. How do I make part of it thicker?I could just use grip-wrap and wrap around the section of the rod but that would look kinda nigga-rigged. Thought about using thick epoxy glue to glue it on but I'd rather have a less permanent solution that allowes for replacement of the line wrap.Bafore you tell me about other ways to wrap the line on the rod, I don't want a round line-wrap thing and those clips using rubber bands to hold on the rod don't work as they will always move and lose tension.
>>2772346Electrical tapeRod building thread and epoxyMake a friend with a 3d printer and have hom make you one
I got a walmart bamboo cane pole a while back and was wondering what the best way to store it is. I just kind of have it laying around with the line wrapped around it but I need something keep it in.
>>2772388pvc tube with bubble wrap or foam
gonna splurge on a high end jig rodgive me some recs, casting/freshwater
>>2772272that's a ripoff. people ask retarded prices for used gear. get a shimano fx($20) or sienna($30) reel and then a rod from wally world.
does anyone surf fish? It's seems pretty difficult to get bites unless you're using live bait.
>>2771840I went ahead with the Gamakatsu B10s. Those were what I was looking at before you mentioned them. I still need to swing by the fly shop to grab some eyes and the wire. It's been blistering hot this last week and a half so I haven't left the house... I'm planning on making a trip this tomorrow. The weather looks much nicer next week, so I'm planning on getting out on the water.
>>2772455If they don't have knot 2 kinky then you can use senyo intruder wire or anything similar.
>>2772464I'm glad you posted this, they did not have the knot 2 kinky, so I got the senyo intruder. I also learned that the reason I can't find the firehole hooks is because they went out of business, so it looks like you'll need to find a replacement yourself when what you have runs out.
>>2772405you're a fucking idiot, you literally suggesting something 2x to 3x the price shut the fuck up
>>2772345yeah i went to walmart and felt those shitty cheap af rods that felt like theyd break after 1 use, id rather follow the guides, pay 10 to 15 dollars more for a used combo that is highly recommended
>>2772545You could also be less of a Jew and spend $40 on a rod (Ugly Stik GX2) and $20 on a reel. Then, you buy some mono for $8 and a big sampler pack of jigs and plastic grubs for $20. That is less than $100. That's not even a full day at McDonald's, and when you don't get free food on your day off, you can get free food from the river. Think of the cost savings. Even if your local water is heavily contaminated with mercury and whatnot, you can rest assured that it's not going to be worse than the slop you eat at your McDonald's job. Don't be so stingy. >t. Between the following, which would you eat?>creek chub>channel catfish>common carp>largemouth bass>Filet O'Fish from McDonald's
I've been fishing around 5 times now and not caught anything, at a carp lake using a hair rig with sweetcorn. had a couple of good bites I failed to reel in, but I know the mistakes I made there so shouldn't happen again. my problem today was getting no bites at all. despite constant nibbles and movement on the rod tip, whenever I yank up to set the hook there was nothing on it. I have a few theories.one, the carp haven't taken the bait yet and I'm striking too early. how much movement should I be seeing on the rod if I have a bite? most of the movements were just small twitches today but some movements seemed quite significant.two, smaller fish are nibbling the sweetcorn off, which is why I see movement but get no hooks and the bait is gone when I reel in. I will be trying out boilies next time I go.I also make my own bait stops from tiny splinters of wood with a knife, instead of buying plastic ones. are these likely to put the fish off the bait?I just want to catch a fish bros
>>2772633I like catfish and bass, as long as they're under 4-5lbs. After that they can be hit or miss, depending on what they've been eating and the quality of the water they're living in. I've never eaten carp or chub.>Filet O'Fish from McDonald's>sugar and starch foam "bun">battered in starch and deep fried in rancid seed oils>Smothered in a sugary "tarter" sauceThis one is not even an option. It's not even food.

Search Vince goes fishing on you tube, been watching that shit there's good stuff on how to read the surf. He's nailing them on jerkbaits
>>2772569That's a total ripoff though. I got an ugly stick shakespeare reel combo for $20 brand new. It was probably 2008 when I got it so inflation and all. But I couldn't imagine selling it for a profit 15 years later.>t. The guy that rec'd the wayfarer and enjoys it that also has like 20 other rods of varying quality but isn't a "guide"
>>2772565>>Wife found a cheap rod/reel combo with a brand new $20 lure on it stashed in a bushSome kid gonna be upset she found his stash spot and took his pole. He gotta learn tho, that's fuggin lazy
>>2772663>negroFuck that, the Poles and Jews are great at making Carp.
>>2772682Those jerkbaits are really difficult to use. If there's no fish they straight up don't work for obvious reasons. finding a hole with fish is the challenging part.
Anyone chum? Am I missing out?
>>2772452I almost exclusively surf fish. Usually have one pole with squid or clams on it and another with a lure. I get fluke/flounder on light jigs with softbaits. I get a lot of stripers on unweighted 8" Black Sluggos or topbaits. Blues on spoons. >>2772682I'm from Bergen County but my grandparents had a place on the beach in Ocean City, used to go out there all the time and after they went to bed would spend hours on the beach surf fishing. I miss that
>>2772702That YouTube channel got vids on finding the holes. I watched one about breakers "walling off" areas too. Wish I knew this shit years ago
>>2771977green pumpkin senko worms will change your life. went to a heavily pressured lake a few weeks ago and landed plenty of smallmouth bass on a wacky rigged senko. literally nothing else worked, tried every other lure under the sun and all they wanted was that green bastard
>>2772635Not a euro and have never fished for carp but with soft plastics with bass it's said you watch the line and see if it's moving in a way that doesn't correspond with the wind like tightening or violently twitching. Basically you want enough slack in the line that the fish won't feel a pull when they take the bait, but not so much slack that you can't set the hook
>>2772635Your bait stop is probably fine. You need to wait for a big bend in your rod. Do not set the hook on carp. You'll rip their lips off. The hook will be plenty set by the time you start reeling. Keep at it. Don't get discouraged.
>>2772757>caught fish>still wants to just seethe and shit his pants on 4chan damn
>>2772758A three inch bluegill ain't a fish. It's a dink. Don't even get me started on the one inch bluegills. That's just bait.

I remember releasing a 16" striper and some Asians asked why I was releasing it >because its too small to keep>nobody will know>I wouldNot to mention all the blacks who just slit the gills of sea robins and leave them on the beach, or clean the fish on the beach and leave the fins/guts right there.

>>2772768Projection, I only catch and release.
>>2772772you catch and release retarded thoughts from your dumb nigger brain
>>2772770Asians have a culture of cheating. They even have a saying for it. I'm not surprised.
fishing is for everyone, regardless of color or creed> blacks will overfish the same small pond, literally taking buckets home daily until there is nothing left, then move on to the next small pond, often tresspassing on private property> mexicans will litter up the fishing spot, making it look like you're fishing in india, and they also drown regularly, probably because they got entagled in the wads of high test line they leave all over the place> white boomers care about nothing but bass, making up all kinds of fuddlore about other fish species, and overfishing the shit out of the same spots they have marked on their chartpoltter. the lake will never be peaceful again, they're out there fishing every single day like they are in a tournament with a million dollar grand prize. the poor dink bass stay skinny because they never have time to actually eat food, they get caught multiple times a day. then they blow by you on their boat like a fucking retard almost capsizing your kayak.
>>2772779Yeah it sucks that fishing was ruined before I was even born. If I was born sooner I wouldn't even get to fish. There is no winning in this timeline.
>>2772779Of course boomers had to introduce invasive species too.
>>2772633I've eaten all those minus the Filet o'fish and I'd rank them1. channel catfish2. creek chub3. largemouth bass4. common carp
>>2772726>Basically you want enough slack in the line that the fish won't feel a pull when they take the baitthat could be my problem, I've been taking all the slack out so I can best see movements on the line. will try a bit looser. should also make me less paranoid about every tiny twitch.>>2772752>Do not set the hook on carp. You'll rip their lips offdamn, I must've looked even more retarded to all the other anglers.>Keep at ityeah I will, I like just sitting out there anyway. but a fish every now and then would be nice.gonna get some braided hooklink as well. currently tie my hair rigs out of regular line and that probably doesn't have the most natural movement.

I had asked in a previous thread about Moras as a good knife better than bait shop knifes but not as expensive as my other knifes, they just arrived today and theyre great. Thanks also to the dude who suggested the high-vis colors.
are high end st croixs ok? i know their low/mid stuff has gone to complete shit
>>2772923Anything Premier or better is competitive with other rods in the price bracket. But St Croix rods tend to be softer for rating than other brands and you might not prefer that.
>>2772709do you roam the beaches until you find a place where they're hitting? Seems kinda tiring to have to hold 2 poles while doing that.
>>2772686you're just lying and making shit upshow the listing or receiptim talking now, not 15 years ago. show where its 20 dollars brand new
>>2772935Not really, I'm very familiar with my favorite spots so I lay the sand spike down for bait and go up and down roughly 100 feet of shore with my lures. Cant remember the last time I got skunked, even if it was just a scup or sea robin. Also, it's on Martha's Vineyard so I'm not too concerned about "people of ill repute" trying to steal my rod.
>>2772997ah so effectively you're walking around with one rod while your other rod is in place.
>>2772999Yeah my favorite spot has a nice curve where the ocean comes back into an inlet and I put the bait right there and then follow the directions of the tides over the next few hours until it goes slack. I feel like the tides and taking the movement into consideration is way more important in SW fishing than freshwater.
>>2773001that's interesting, so if the tides were going to the left of the beach you would track that direction? It's interesting that you choose squid as your chosen bait, usually that catches sharks and bat rays over on this side
>>2773006Yes, as the tide comes in, I move to the inlet, as it goes out I move toward the ocean area. The times in green are when I'd go fishing. I don't know if its a regional term but when the tide isn't moving we call it "slack tide" and there's no point fishing for anything because thats when the fish aren't biting. The moving tides are moving the baitfish and thats when the bigger fish start to feed. I think a lot of people just think "oh we can fish at sunrise or sunset" and that might work okay, but I always check tide charts to determine when I'm going surf fishing.
>>2772940I bought it 15 years ago, you absolute moron. You got ripped off, I'd have just given the fucking thing away if i wanted to get rid of it. I actually paid like $17, it was brand new. I bought 2 of them. I used it for 15 fucking years. It's used, like the one you got. If I sold it to someone for more than I paid and it was 15 years old, I'd feel like a greedy kike. You've been had by a greedy kike. I'm not lying, I used them today here they are with the gay ass wayfarer thing. One's lefty for my daughter who didn't exist when I bought them.
Brought home some kitties Little one 8 a 3 inch largo shad the big one 8 a jigging spoon>>2773001Nice cock m8
>>2773011Yea, at that price point, I rather buy shit new on sale and you can easily find good sale for those cheap gears. Those cheap gears aren't really meant to last a long time and people using cheap gears typically don't take care of them. I rather buy used expensive gears because they typically are a substantial saving and many name brand have very generous warranty program for their gear (if it's not a fake).
Just getting back to this, going through some old shit. I found stuff from when I was pre-teen in the 90s. This shit is +30 years old and im sure has absolutely been exposed to +100°F many times. I'm afraid to open it
>>2773022But nowaday, due to online nature of resale, people are asking way too damn much for used shit.I'm not buying some used shit for more than 70% of the damn price, because I can regular find sale of the same item for 80%. Fucker are trying to sell "barely used" shit for like 80-90% of the original factory price. Are you serious?????
>>2773022Yeah there's def a difference. some stuff is just disposable crap. Other stuff the maintenance is worth the effort.
>>2773022NTA....I'm still using a 6'6" Ugly Stick and an inexpensive($40ish) Shimano reel that I bought over 25 years ago. They're cheap, but they're not poor quality. It's held up as well as my $100+ rods and reels.

>>2773046>>2773062Those are mine. I have a bunch of varying quality, I only use those in the lake near my house. They catch fish, and I'd bet they've caught more than you ever will. Because attitude is synonymous with landing fish. Deny it all you want, it's true.
>>2773046You can catch fish with anything. Ive caught more fish on my cheap shit $50 Tsunami surf rods than my $190 Daiwa Team Surf, but thats because one is 20 years old and the other is like 3. Theres some homeless dude who fishes a nearby pier and used to use an empty bottle with the line wrapped around it before the B&T place gave him a free rod and reel combo.

>>2773158Nice flies. Are you the guy who wanted to tie flies and hadn't even fished? Either way, I remember that you only got into tying recently. How come you bought what looks like an expensive vise?
>>2773183>Nice flies. Thanks!>Are you the guy who wanted to tie flies and hadn't even fished? No, I've been fishing for almost 40 years. I'm one of the other anons that just start fly fishing and fly tying. I bought an Echo lift and got the fly tying kit on craigslist for $40. >How come you bought what looks like an expensive vise? It's not actually an expensive vise, it's a chinese knock off of an expensive vise :P I paid $53 for it on Amazon. It's called a Madison True Rotary vise, it's a clone of the renzetti traveler. I bought it because I decided I enjoyed tying them enough that I was going to keep doing it. The simple vise I got with the kit was great to get me started, but it had some quirks. I could rotate it, to see the other sides of the fly, but it would be at an odd angle sometimes and I'd have to stand up and move around to find a good angle to trim up some flies. I also liked the idea of being able to spin the hook on it's axis, to wind things. It was fun doing it by hand at first, but the novelty wore off fairly quickly. So I took a gamble on a chinese knock off. That said, I love it. If it does break, I'll probably pony up for the real deal.
>>2773130Yeah palmering marabou can be tricky, but aside from your trailer hook being a little short it looks right. it's a big tuft of marabou with lead eyes and too much flash.>>2773138I'd go back another 1/4-3/8 inch I like that stinger to be almost hanging out the back but itll fish where you've got it >>2773158I like that colour comboJust make sure you're getting all the marabou you can out of each feather or sometimes even doubling up that one looks a little sparse. Very much a "more is more" kind of fly. And dont be afraid to play with it, grizzly hackles it lateral scale can up curb appeal, contrasting hot heads can be cool (black with a pink or chartreuse or orange head makes a good egg sucking leech) amd dont set the hook too hard while swinging. When I get a thump swinging I do literally nothing and let the fish hook itsself; I've lost a lot of good fish trying to set the hook and ripping the fly from its mouth. When you hook a fish they tend to open their mouth and shake their heads violently, so you want to wait till you feel the fish turn and run to set the hook in to the fish instead of ripping the fly out of its mouth. >pic related>28 inch buck>pink mop with orange head
>>2773215Wait no that one did have a pink head, the underbody was orange.
>>2773013Also these kitties tasted great
>>2773239yummy
>>2773011you still haven't showed proof or a receipt>>2773022that price point doesn't exist, even when "on sale"as per the original response, prove it, or shut the fuck up you delusional retard
>>2773271>wants to see decades old "proof" if a fucking impulse purchase of $17x2>this is a lot of money to him>got ripped off by a kike anywaysFuck you, retard. Enjoy your 2nd hand trash that cost more than new recommended by "guides". Don't hook yourself. You can't help an absolute moron. If you tried, they'll fucking fight every step of the way.
mfs arguing over whether or not buying a new ugly stik is better than buying a used ugly stik... and I'm sitting here wondering why people still recommend ugly stik. for what they cost, they are completely overpriced compared to other choices. budget gear has come a long way, and ugly stik got it's acclaim from boomers who just spout fuddlore. at the end of the day, it doesn't matter you can catch fish on anything, but the ugly stik meme needs to die. the main concern with buying really cheap stuff, even brand new, is when it comes to reels. there is NO reason to buy any budget reel other than shimano or daiwa. they both have decades of experience sucessfully trickling down tech to their budget stuff. other cheap reels have horrible tolerances and potmetal gears that will only last if you don't overwork them, and even then they might just sheer teeth off for no reason at all one day. a $20 shimano fx will last years as long as you don't do really dumb shit with it, even if you don't maintain it. plenty of modern $50 budget rods are like high-end rods from 2005. everyone starts somewhere, and there is no reason t splurge on shit when you might not even stick with the hobby or do it freqently, but the point is that you can get pretty good shit these days for very little, so saving just a little bit longer can keep you in the "buy once cry once" type of mentality. if your shit breaks and you have to replace it, you've spent more at the end of the day anyways. I'm sure everyone has lerned this lesson in life. the sticky recs are very questionable in my opinion. kind of all voer the place.
>>2773333I have Ugly Stiks so when my retard friends ask to go fishing with me I can give them gear that I don't care if they lose or break
>>2773346Different anon, I'm the opposite of this, I give my friends the nice stuff and I use the cheap/usually broken shit. Nobody ever wants to go fishing with me so, you know.
>>2773333For the record I recommended a sub $10 combo that I actually own to some pole puffing faggot that said some bullshit about "not wanting to go overboard on spending". I've lost rigs or just lures that cost more. Agree with most of what you said >buy once cry onceThis jew talk always makes me laugh. I enjoy my hobbies and like blowing my hard earned money on shit like gun attachments and stupid lures, guitar shit, etc. I couldn't imagine "crying" about it because I traded kike paper i was tricked into trading hours of my life for, for it
Hey so I'm mainly a saltwater fisherman but I've been getting into freshwater this year, mainly targeting trout and bass. I currently have a 6' and 6'6" Ugly Stik with basic Eagle Claw reels and I want to upgrade. I have Daiwa/Shimano stuff for my saltwater gear so I'm very familiar with brands and brand quality but I'm not sure where to start for freshwater stuff? What would you recommend for two freshwater rods and reels, one baitcasting and one spinning? No combos, I'll buy each individually. I can do one piece up to 7' but am completely okay with two or three piece rods as well. I'll be going for trout and bass, but the areas I fish also have panfish and pike which I might hook by accident.
>>2773513baitcasting setup is only worth it for throwing "heavy" baits. like 1/2oz and up. for some people that's all they throw for bass anyways so it works. you can always fish for bass with lighter stuff on the "trout rod." even a $50 Daiwa Aird-X will feel like a big upgrade. they are pretty light and thin yet durable. reel seat is love it or hate it minimalist type. I got one of these recently and for the sale price it's pretty damn nice. I got the 7'4 bladed jig rod> https://www.abugarcia.com/collections/jordan-lee-collection/products/jordan-lee-casting-rod
imagine needing a rod when you can just grab a stick from the ground
>>2773548>He uses a stick and doesn't just handline using scrap line he found on the side of the riverNever gonna make it.
>>2773513My TFO Professional is my only expensive rod and it doesn't really feel any nicer than my cheap rods. Looks cool, though. I think in the $100 budget for an "upgrade" you can't go wrong with any of them. If you're looking at reels I really like my Shimano MGL SLX but I haven't compared it to a Tatula. The guy I bought my SLX from said he liked his Daiwas more. The thing I like about the MGL is it's really small and handles small baits as well as big ones. Some people say it's like a pseudo-BFS reel. I don't fully agree but it does throw those smaller presentations which I guess is a problem with most baitcasting reels. As for spinning reels I fought a 10 foot gator on my Pflueger Trion. Beefy and bullet proof little reel that didn't break the bank. Kind of heavy but I haven't been gentle with it and it's still holding up. I only have advice for reels and not really rods. I'm under the impression that rods kind of plateau in quality after you spend enough money. They just get "nicer", not more "capable". Thats just my opinion though, other people feel a different way and say their Loomis rod outfishes anything else.
>>2773520>>2773587Thanks. Ive never used Abu Garcia so I'm hesitant about it. I'll probably check out Daiwa rods more tomorrow. Going to pair it with a Shimano Scorpion because I realize I have one laying around but it might be spooled a bit heavy as I was using it for light inshore casting. I'm going spinning for trout, I bought pic related and will pair it with a Legalis LT 1000, I figure since I'm way more into Saltwater a more modestly priced reel like the Legalis is just fine for freshwater.
I've had a bit of a dry spell the past few days. It's been colder here, so I think that is major part of it. Last week, I went creek fishing a couple times and caught a ton of fish, including some relatively big ones.I had my first day at the outdoor goods store. I'm a regular customer, so I freaked out one of the managers, even though I briefly mentioned it last week when buying a fly rod, which I now somewhat regret since hearing about a really good discount that I can get. Nevertheless, it looks like I'll be buying another fly rod from Echo this year: either another 4 WT or a 6 WT or maybe a 3 WT but probably a 6 WT. Everything is as I expected, minus the very generous discounts from companies, and there were multiple misunderstandings that frustrate me, even though I should just forget them.
>>2773071That's pretty cool. Not catching fish is a skill issue, if that guy can catch fish with a bottle and line.
>>2773215I went pretty heavy on the marabou on the first one, so I went light on the second two. I just made three more, I'm getting a better feel for how much to keep and how much to strip. I haven't worked with it much. There's a lot of "trash" hiding the good feathers. Maybe it's a quality issue, it's all strung marabou. I'm getting the hook further back, but from how you describe, I can probably go back even further. I'm going fishing tomorrow morning. I'm not sure if I'll try these. I'm going to the lake. I'll be trying the float-n-fly setup. These may work with it.
>>2773591Not the Abu Garcia guy but they made a decent name for themselves over the years. I think their really cheap stuff is just rebrands of aliexpress tier shit, but their more expensive stuff is designed in house. From what I've read anyway. I want a Fenwick rod but my next panfish rod will probably be another TFO. They have a 3-piece version that sounds great for when I travel around. I heard Fenwick has great customer support and warranty which is why I want to get one but I love my TFO rod a lot. I looked at a Legalis but ended up getting a Pflueger President since I liked the Trion so much. I bought a Daiwa QZ 750 for my TFO Trout and Panfish and broke the bail spring a month after getting it which is why I got the President. Never got a response from customer support so kind of wrote Daiwa off after that. The President uses a compression spring instead of a torsion spring so it's a HELL of a lot less fragile. But I digress, it's just a me issue. I broke the drag clicker on my President so it isn't like I've never had an issue from that one either. Small reels are just so damn fragile. Still works though.
>>2773661>>2773591No I'm actually retarded. I was thinking of KastKings used rebrands for their cheapos. Abu Garcia is either Swedish made or Taiwan made equipment. The S, SX, STX, and BCX are made in China but I think they use AG's designs and aren't just rebranded trash like KastKing is.
>>2773661Everything you said about panfish gear is opposite to me. Daiwa Presso >>>>>>> Fenwick. Fenwick is absolute dogshit, especially the multi-piece rods. The Pflueger President is also much less smooth than Daiwa reels. It's heavier too.
>>2773665NTA, but Fenwick Lights and Ultralights make great Crappie sticks, you need a noodle with those fucks sometimes. And for reels, the smoothness that counts for me isn't retrieve but drag, and Presidents are the best $50 drag washer set I've yet tried. I do have a Spinmatic 4 piece and a QR-750 on it, for fishing on hikes or when motorbiking, and they're both great, but for ~$70 total, I do like an Eagle with a President for soft mouthed fish.
>>2773665Probaby. The Presso is nice value for money. I shill that thing a lot to people wanting to get into ulltralight rods. >Pflueger President is also much less smooth than Daiwa reelsI dunno about that, feels fine to me. I have my Daiwa, Pflueger and Lews. They honestly all feel the same. I know Daiwa has a huge following but I don't notice much of a difference. Weight maybe but at least the weight balances out on my rod and I don't notice it. Now my Trion on the other hand is a fat bitch. Its actually heavy as fuck. Combined with my ugly stik, it gets pretty tiring casting it all day. It's a tank though which is all I really care about.
>>2773661fyi the daiwa qc/qc/qr750 or whatever line supposedly isn't an in-house daiwa design. that's waht people say online anyways. saw that in reviews when I was about to buy one because they look cool. people were saying that they weren't up to normal daiwa quality. the lt reels are.
going up in price tiers gets you more options in terms of actions. it's not necessarily about getting a rod that looks or feels nicer in terms of quality. it's mostly in the blank, which only an experienced fisherman can appreciate. and that's not even to say that you have to buy a technique specific rod for that specific technique. sometimes you just develope a liking for a certain type of blank and prefer it for techniques that it might not even be designed for. sub-$100 rods aremore of a "general purpose" blank, but the irony is that the segment is dominated by brromsticks that I don't view as "general purpose" to begin with. having said that, a $100-150 rod is often much cheaper if you get it on sale. rods in that price range are on sale more than anything else because the richfags won't buy anything less than $250, and the budget rods are rarely ever on sale.
>>2773654There we go those are mop heads made of marabou, they look good>a better feel for how much to keep and how much to stripLook for the stem taper, there will be a spot where it relatively quickly goes from thick to thin. The thick side is brittle so strip the thick side up to where the sharp taper starts. >I can probably go back even furtherAlmost a full (octopus) hook length further, but that would be personal preference, if it "looks right" to you it's absolutely fine. I like it so far back cause when I'm swinging for lazy winter fish I want them to get hooked if they look at it too hard. My fish usually only attack either the front third or the back third and seldom anywhere else so I like a hook way up front and a hook way in the back. >There's a lot of "trash" hiding the good feathersUnfortunately that's the nature of the beast. Extra select marabou has less trash feathers but you dont get much more usable marabou out of each feather despite the feathers being near twice as long. >float-n-flyIf you do fish these in stillwater, which does work, that's not how I'd go about it. I'd tie it on a bare leader and strip it like any other streamer.
>>2773665>>2773666Whats wrong with Fenwick? Ive heard nothing but good things about them
>>2773756people are very brand loyal. I think fenwick did have a bad phase a few years ago compared to their old stuff but they revamped their lineup recently. I don't personally have any experience with them though so I can't say for certain. some people will only recommend stuff they've had, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because it's better than regurgitating bullshit they heard online, but sometimes it also makes them assume everything else is shit. it's really challenging to get legitimate info on rods aside from buying them and either wishing you didn't or being satisfied. 99% of rods aren't available ins tore to finger fuck before you decide.
>>2773756they fucked up their eagle line a year or two agoi haven't messed with the elite/bass stuff to know but i've heard its ok
>>2773773Oh okay, I'm like that with Daiwa I guess, love those guys>>2773778The one I ordered here >>2773591is the HMG which looks like a step up, is that still good? I can always return it if people think there are better options.
>>2773780yup, she looks good
found the secret for catching carp (or rather was told it by an experienced old fisherman I met) - mussels.I went from 0 catches in 5 fishing trips, to 4 in about 4 hours today. they fucking love them. old guy said he caught THIRTY that day.picrel was my biggest.
>>2773756>>2773773I was trying out the panfish rods, both 3 piece 7' and 2 piece 6'6. The 3 piece was worse than my Ugly Stik. It was heavy and flexed terribly. It didn't flex as a whole rod. It was as if the middle section belonged to another rod. The Presso, on the other hand, which is 4 piece, is great for tossing light lures. I've been able to catch 2+ pound fish on it. pretty easily, yet it still feels like an ultralight.
Anyone have experience fishing with otter or planer boards?
>>2773814I've seen videos, once I watched a 40kg japanese little girl fish a 90kg tuna on a board.
>>2773693It makes sense. I bought a Lew's 750 to replace that QZ750 and the same part broke. It's basically a carbon copy, probably from a similar factory. Lew's at least got back to me in a couple of days and sent me two new springs by the end of the week. I already grabbed a President by that point so I don't use the Lew's but I appreciate it and I have a backup now. That being said, looking at the Legalis manual it uses a compression spring so it's probably fine. The QZ750 felt fine in terms of smoothness and drag. It was just the one flaw in an otherwise decent product.
>>2773750Thanks! I'll keep those tips in mind. There are enough feathers in the string that I'm not too worried about wasting money. There are just a lot of little feathers pinned in between that aren't really worth using or saving. I'll probably save them in the red. I can use them as hot spots or tails. But I've just been tossing the larf from the black string. I just hate "wasting" stuff. No luck fishing today. I didn't even end up using my fly rod. The water was around 20-25 feet lower than the last time I was out there several weeks ago. I was standing where I was hoping to be casting. Shasta is a man made reservoir, it gets deep fairly quickly. Which is nice when it's full, but makes getting to the water more challenging when it's low. I didn't really have any open space for a back cast, so I just used my spinning rod/reel. There were several very nice bass, +15in, swimming around and a bunch of schools of smaller ones. My niece caught an eleven inch spotted bass on her first cast, and that was the only fish any of us caught. My dad and I got skunked. I tried mepps, spinnerbaits, neds, rattle jigs and even live night crawlers. They just were not interested. But it was a beautiful morning and at least my niece didn't get skunked.
>>2773910>a lot of little feathers pinned in between that aren't really worth using or savingYup that's normal, Kelly galloup says natural materials will have about a 30% cull rate and I'd agree with that. I'd even say strung hackle is closer to 40%Sorry you didn't catch any but I'm glad you had fun. Those bass might have eaten a mop, I've caught bass on em before, but if they wouldnt eat a ned probably not.
>>2773871>40kg japanese little girlElaborate on that
Im putting together a little trout/panfish kit. Is this good to start with? I'm also looking at Luhr Jensen Super Dupers and maybe tiny Daredevles, but I think this is good enough for a starting point. Anything else?
>>2773814I worked on a day charter a couple years ago. We did this thing where we dragged the planner board through the bay with a big ass net behind it. Literally stopped up 30lb of big shrimp, octopus, things I didn't even know we had. Probably fucked the bottom of the eco system up. I can't one for my future boat but the setup is very heavy duty and I fear I'd get it snagged
I did my first real day of work, and it was in the fishing department. In certain respects, it was extremely interesting.
Musky popper>>2773952If you want panfish with that setup that kastmaster is too big. I usually use 1/12oz for panfish. Itd be okay for trout but still on the big side.I'd add tiny curly tails too they are easily the most versatile lure out there. Might be worth having some bigger, weighted foam bobbers on hand, too. the extra mass can get you a lot more casting distance.
I found a bunch of old spools of mono. Some might be like +20 years old. They were in a box. Shit's probably no good, right?
>>2774013As long as they weren't in direct sun or wet for 20 years they should be fine. Worst case they lost some strength and you might lose a lure to a random snap off.
2.5" Gulp Minnows(I prefer natural colors like smelt) on a #6 Owner Mosquito Light hook is the GOAT dropshot rig for panfish. try it and thank me later. also, Mepps XD single hook in the two smallest sizes are also incredible. pic rel $1 crankbaits from Walmart are also really good, but they often run crooked out of the packaging so you have to tune them with pliers. if you're going to buy lots of spinners like that, you should try the Mepps Grab Bag special,> https://www.mepps.com/information/grab-bag-specials/641#GBA it's the cheapest way to get mepps. smallest sizes gets you the most.
>>2774013>>2774070Even out of the sun itll get stiff sitting there, I'd dispose of them. Nylon is a recyclable, right?>>2773952>>2774109The tiny x-raps and the strike king bitsy minnow are awesome too
>>2774013I know a guy who inherited a rod and reel that hasn't been used in 40+ years with mono on it. He says the line is as good as new, and if it is a little stiffer with age, you can make believe that it's fluorocarbon.
>>2774070>>2774122>>2774208Some are unopened. I used one to back braid on a reel. I pulled the knots pretty tight, it'll be ok for backing. If it ever breaks and I lose a fish I'll just regret it and tell the story forever
>>2774122>>2774109>>2774011Thanks guys. Good shit with the link to that Mepps grab bag, that's a fucking steal I just ordered one.
>>2771966Haven't been fishing since I was a kid but have moved to a lake heavy state after living in the mountains so time to pick fishing back up or become one of those people who do laps around the lake in the pontoon boat.In pic related, would the underwater island in the middle be a good fishing spot? Or is that too out in the open? Also thinking about bow fishing too. Lots of carp around here.
>>2774271>would the underwater island in the middle be a good fishing spotAll structure is a good place to fish. There are people who punch holes in old steel barrels and purposely sink them near their favorite places just to create easy to access structures where the fish will gather.
>>2773791Another fisherman suggested soaking bait in blended mussel and casting that. Not sure if its the same as just using mussels though.
my cheap used fishing rod fell apart in under 1 day lol and it just happened to be when I caught my first fish lol the thing you rotate fell off and I'm sitting there spinning the reel by hand to get the line back in and the fish went for it and was jumping over and over out of the water to get loose from the hook and thank God it did I didn't want to kill it or deal with having to take the hook out myself
>>2774321also i was surprised since like absolutely no fish for 2 hours then it ate like 80% of my lure in 1 bite and it was stronger than I expected. it went for the last 20% of my lure and got hooked then
>>2774321>>2774323Sounds like a fun time. Not as fun as landing it, but there’s a reason we all think about the ones that got away.
>>2772725Hell yea. The best fishing is walking s creek with a spinning rod and a pack of senkos. Simple easy and fun
>>2773083Lol that's always the best. My dad smoked a huge a flathead with me after months of autism and current study. The look on the old man's face was priceless.
Anybody ever fished a salmon run? I think it's gonna happen near where I live soon, seems like it could be funCan you get away with just spinners or does it need to be fly fishing
>>2774387You can catch them with anything. During the spawn, they stop eating at a certain point (Pacific Salmon die after spawning so there is no point to keep eating, East Coast Salmon return to the sea) but they're protective of their eggs and horny so they'll hit anything they might deem a threat to their babby. Id be reluctant to use flies because flies = food while spoon = annoying ass fish near my nest.
>>2774360>The look on the old man's face was priceless.Same here. The moment he got home he immediately ordered a bunch more spoons.
>>2774340nah as already stated i didnt want to kill it or have to deal with removing the hook so it was best outcome to happen
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to fishing and need help with something. I'm starting out with ultralight gear: size 1000 spinning reel spooled with PE1 braid on a light 7 foot carbon fiber rod, basic float rig with small soft plastics at the business end of the 10lb fluoro leader and small 1/32 oz jigheads weighted down with some small splitshots about halfway on the leader.Got a few decent panfish, getting a lot of bites on ultralight, no problem at all. Now the problem is, about half of my casts end up being a nightmare, my leader gets all twisted up against the bobber, and I have to spend the entire day cutting my rigs and retying them (not a chance in hell to get that thin ass braid to untangle), and ending up missing A TON of fish in the process. What do you recommend I do to avoid these tangles? Add more splitshots? I saw one tip too on a French angling forum to use one of those triple jointed swivels below the bobber, do you reckon that would work too?
>>2774495You could use a slip bobber setup
>>2774498I tried that, to no avail. Still got tangles. I also want to avoid using larger bobbers to not spook the fish. The species I target can get quite finicky
>>2774533>>2774495This kind of tangle is the inevitable consequence of weight that is too distributed. Use a shorter leader with a knot your slip bobber can slip past, so your jig, splitshot, and bobber are all within 6 inches of each other.Honestly, you could just omit the leader and you'd probably still catch just as many fish.
Got into some sweet cutties last week. Spent a week in WY/MT hiking and fishing. Didn't see a soul in 5 days. it was magnificent.
>>2774587mad jealous
>>2774602go fish dawg!
Algae bloom forced some bass into clear water in an inlet. Had a blast tossing wooly buggers and hoppers at them and seeing them chase and jump for it.
On Wednesday, I caught 30 or so in the creek, mostly bass, and I was able to catch all three native true bass species. I only fished for a couple hours, so the fishing was clearly quite good. That was a lot of fun, one of my best trips all year.
>>2774580Thanks, will give this a try. I'm using 4 ft leader and attaching it to the mainline + bobber with a single swivel, which is probably why it's helicoptering into a tangled mess every time I cast.
>>2774495when you open you bale and hold on to your line with your finger make sure it's pulled tight just past your finger and up the eyelets. Also avoid casting into the wind. since you're ultralight and likely freshwater fishing, you're more likely to get wind knots if you go against the wind. if you've got a tail wind instead, you can also cast further out. it also helps to get high quality braid like yo-zuri where you might be able to untangle stuff if it gets slightly knotted. if not learn how to tie a blood knot so that you can just snip tangles and tie two loose lines together.
>>2772346For mine I remove the foam insert from the snap on piece, do tape wraps to secure the plastic piece to the rod, put the foam insert back in.
i commited sacrilidge
>>2773910I'm going on a mushroom hunting trip on Sunday morning. I'll be driving out to McCloud, to hunt for matsutake, which are said to be fruiting up there now. But, McCloud also has some of the best trout waters in the State. I'll also be driving back along Hat Creek, another famous trout stream in the area. McCloud is almost entirely 0 limit, barbless artificial lures only. But Hat creek is a heavily fished(and stocked) trout stream. If you've fished a glo bug egg, that's where they were made famous. In fact, the owner of the glo bug brand is based out of my town. So I'll be tying some of those as well as some comparadun PMDs in preperation for that trip. I need to stop by the fly shop to buy some glow bugs and egg hooks. So I'll tie the PMDs tonight.
I just picked up a shimano DC baitcaster, what rod should I pair with it?
>>2773791Fantastic tip, thank you.>>2774495Maybe I'm misunderstanding but it sounds like more of a technique issue than a gear issue. When I'm using 4lb line and small hooks/weights I also find it very easy to tangle if I'm fishing as aggressively as I would with a heavier setup, but I feel it's natural that when throwing a lighter presentation on lighter line you're also not throwing as hard or as far. Just as I'm not throwing my freshwater bass setup as hard or far as my beach surf setup with 8oz of lead, but when I start trying to throw my ul as hard as my bass gear I get into trouble. I expect this may be close to your trouble.>>2775103Crayfish for bass is so underrated. Ontario has such pozzed laws though you need to catch them in the same waterbody you fish in, not feasible in a lot of places.

But if you wanna feel like you actually did something use lures. Then again, if you’re catching an actually big fish imo doesn’t matter how you caught it so long as you won the fight and landed it. There’s an almost primal part Of my brain that gets scratched when I know I tricked an animal into attacking something that wasn’t edible while in its own element and then fought against it to take it out of its element and into mine (land) and then eating it. Bait it’s just like I know I’m almost guaranteed to catch something.
>>2775207I feel you. I also just started work and am fishing less and gaming more. I'm going to make sure I get out very soon today. The one complication is that there is going to be a lot of traffic, although no one fishing.
>>2775207I was a neet for a few years and got back into the workforce around spring. It's nice not stressing over unemployment but I'm simultaneously exhausted and restless and almost feel like fishing is too much. Before, I'd fish everyday like it was my job and unwind with other things, and after I'd barely even wanna game or do much at all besides rot on a screen. But that made me realize what a waste it was, I dreaded looking back at all the potential things I was passing off that I used to love, and I didnt wanna look back to these days and only remember working and doing nothing. So I started forcing myself to just go. It's not easy, but bite the bullet and just force yourself no matter how tired or hard it feels, you'll appreciate good days more and maximize your time, and you'll be glad you did. Fishing made me realize the importance of memories and experiences, and every day you aren't doing something you love or at least intersting, or spending time with someone you care about, is a missed memory to reflect on fondly and just another blur in life. I try and go at least a couple days a week and in the mornings on weekends, planning to do more as fall comes around and things cool off a bit. Make time for things you like, be it fishing or whatever, or it'll slip by you faster than you realize.
>>2775228The traffic after work sucks, but realistically it’s a 40-50 minute drive and could be much worse. I’d like to bring my fishing stuff with me so I can maybe stop by some lakes I pass on my commute but I don’t trust the area I’m in to leave my stuff in my car and can’t really collapse it all that well to fit into the trunk. Maybe if I get a holder of sorts to keep from bouncing around in my trunk. But I live right next to this water control damn thing and canal system full of tarpon, Jack, snook, LMB, peacock, snakeheads, carp, mullet, catfish, etc don’t even have to drive more than 5 minutes and I just can’t be fucked to go it seems>>2775246I’m hoping this is just some adjustment phase thing going on. I made a mock plan for the week where each hour of the day is accounted for. Work, exercise, fishing, housework/chores, even when I shit shave shower and eat. It’s autistic but if I followed it I’d be able to fish as often as I wanted. I’m gonna try to follow this autist I routine I wrote up and see what happens even if I go out and just say fuck it after 5 minutes. Really weird, it’s not like I’ve lost interest in fishing I don’t think I ever could. Used to be so eager to go out didn’t even care if caught anything
>>2775248>I’m hoping this is just some adjustment phase thing going onIt's a bit of an adjustment phase, but it's easy to not adjust if you let work/exhaustion be your default and don't make effort in my opinion.>I made a mock plan for the week where each hour of the day is accounted forIf it gets you out, stick to it but sometimes it's better to just not plan and let a random day be the day you force yourself to. When I tried planning out, I'd just get anxious about it and feel more tired, but that's just me. Whatever gets you out and works for you, but I think it helps to be a bit fluid with your time or you might stress over something rigid.>Used to be so eager to go out didn’t even care if caught anythingI really questioned what I enjoyed at first, had the exact same feeling of still felt like I liked fishing, but wasnt sure why I felt like I did. After that reflection I decided I still love fishing, it really was just the schedule adjustment and a lot of my energy going to work making things feel negative, so I had to remind myself that. Having a couple skunked days post job made things difficult but finally feeling my rod bent again, seeing a stirke, all the fun of fishing I almost forgot all came back and I didn't wanna give that up no matter how tired.
>>2775186what do you want to do
>>2775250Is that a red band? I've read that they're all descended from the McCloud redband. Their eggs were sent to several fisheries in the 1840s.
Caught this guy today. I also caught another one (same species, northern pike) before, but it was half the size. This one was still pretty small so I put him back too. I could've kept it if I wanted, I figured there wouldn't be much meat on it though.Incidentally this was the first time I've caught something without using bait (I used a small white and green spoon with a silver backside and a treble hook with pinched barbs). There were like 10 other people fishing in the area but I think I was the only one who got anything.
>>2775200>Crayfish for bass is so underrated. Ontario has such pozzed laws though you need to catch them in the same waterbody you fish in, not feasible in a lot of places. At least you don't live in Manitoba. We can't use crayfish for bait AT ALL here anymore.Though I honestly don't blame the government, considering we have invasive crayfish here. Plus there just aren't very many crayfish anymore, it seems. When I was a kid there were tons of them. Now I've seen one in the last five years.
>>2775200>Crayfish for bass is so underratedbass love craws.that said, i did cut a fly off a hook to fish with bait on my fiberglass fly rod, which is, indeed, sacrilege
Are ice fishing tents worth the money? I was planning to get one (probably a used insulated one) this winter. Or should I just get a cheap ass tent from Walmart and cut the floor out?
>>2775298It's just a cutbow, my state is well out of redband range. >>2775339I've thought about picking up dead bugs and sticking small hooks through them for literal flies on the fly rod, but I kinda suspect they'll just rip off the hook casting (and of course not float) but it's tempting when I see them on the ground.
>>2775248I am >>2775228. I went creek fishing, and it was a lot of fun. Almost every piece of fishing equipment I own is in my car at all times, and many of my fishing adventures are whimsical. To prevent your rod from bouncing in the trunk, put your backpack on it.
>>2775344I would say yes, for 2 reasons;1: No fucking with poles really is critical in windy conditions, which is basically always. If it wasn't windy you wouldn't bring the tent. Threading a normal tent together in that shit would be brutal. Keep in mind most tents you're doing it twice, tent body then fly. 2:they're much more square than a normal camping tent, giving you much better usable space. They're big heavy items and you still get less space than you hope, a camping tent would be much more limiting.Personally I wouldn't bother with insulated, it's the new hot thing to have but realistically it's a lot of added cost and weight for nothing. You're going to be sitting on bare ice with an unsealed tent opening the door every half hour to go piss outside. The insulation is doing very little. The fact that they're the hot item now though means you can get an uninsulated one easy and cheap second hand. 2 guys sitting in an uninsulated tent with no heater can still keep a tent warm enough to stop holes from freezing over
>>2775339I'm going to use my 7wt to cast a wacky senko on a blue ribbon trout stream. Whole body hooksets.
>>2775344Imo, the insulated ones are basically a must have if you fish in true cold and don’t have a wheelhouse. Yes, you lose a lot of heat to the ice anyways, but EVA puzzle piece mats are cheap and easy to set up as a floor. I have overnight camped with the 6x6x6 Sportsman’s Guide brand insulated one in the -30s with an EVA mat floor, a Swiss Gear cot, and the “little buddy” Mr heater catalytic heater, and I had to turn down the heater to low. I wouldn’t have been able to do this if it was a snowless year, banking the bottoms of the wall makes a big difference especially when there’s wind (there’s always wind). The one thing I don’t like about my Guide Gear one is the black interior. I’m not a spearfisherman, I don’t need a blackout interior, and the silver interior on some other brands is better for heat retention.
>>2775370You gotta be careful and casting is weird but you can do it. >>2775463Send it
>>2775484If buddy is asking about whether a real hut is "worth it" I'm going to assume he probably doesn't have a sled that can pull the tent, floor mats, 20lb bottle, mr buddy, sleep system/cot etc needed to do the kind of shit you're talking about. For someone at his stage the insulated is entirely unnecessary.
Hey guys Ive finally put together my trout and panfish set. Anything else I should add? I mainly fish salt and all of this shit is so tiny. I’ve got some small Kastmasters on the way and will probably grab a Daredevle. Using a 6’ Fenwisk Light/Fast and a Legalis 1000 with 8lb braid.
>>2775564Pic uploaded poorly, sorry.
Went out for a couple hours today for the first time in a while and all i caught was this baby walleye.Dropped my jig in the same spot and thought i had a trophy wally, fought him for like 3 minutes dragging him up from the depths. He jumped and spit my hook and i realized he was just a big bass.
>>2775344Yes, but only buy ice fishing equipment from last year on massive discount. Every store is stuck with gear from last year and even previous years because the past couple years have been bad across the country. Deep discounts are coming down the pike.
>>2775460>2 guys sitting in an uninsulated tent with no heater can still keep a tent warm enough to stop holes from freezing overI'm more concerned about overall comfort than just keeping the holes from freezing. Winter temperatures here frequently get to -30 celsius, and -40 is not uncommon. Even with a parka, ski pants, and multiple layers underneath those, -30 is still horribly uncomfortable and -40 is outright dangerous (if you're out in it for any appreciable amount of time, anyway). If an uninsulated tent with a heater could get up to -10 or so, I'd consider that worth it. Still not exactly comfortable, but not "every bit of exposed skin is in pain" levels of uncomfortable.>>2775484Sounds like an insulated tent might be best, though I guess I'll have to see just how big the difference in price is.>>2775522I don't have a sled, though I'd like to get a cheap old one at some point (can't afford a new one obviously, shit is like $20k). Until I do I figured I would just either fish on rivers/creeks so I don't have to walk far on the ice, or if I were to fish on a lake I'd just take my truck on the ice.>>2775608Thanks for the tip. I'm guessing I'd have to buy one before winter (or rather, before the ice is thick enough for fishing) to get a cheap one from last year.
>>2775644>I don't have a sledBy sled, we mean an actual plastic sled. They are quite important in transporting tackle and the hut. We are not referring to a snowmobile, which is not necessary, unless you plan on traveling massive distances.
biggest thing I have ever caught in my lifeI feel bad though because I snagged it on the side by accidentI was just throwing literally everything I had at them and they didn't seem to careSpoons, crankbait, jerkbait, inline spinner, dry flies, nymphs, streamersliterally 0 reaction from anything I was throwingEventually moved on to dropshot plastics, and that unfortunately ended up with a snagvery cool fish though and it seemed fine as it swam back to its buddies
>>2775522I did that shit with just an otter sled, pulling it by hand from the landing. Sure, a snowmobile makes it easier, but if you're a grown man who isn't in terrible condition, you can just schlep that stuff. You also forgot the cooler to keep the beer from freezing and an insulated bait box.OTOH, the Little Buddy does get like 6 hours on low with one of the 1 pound cylinders, so if you're willing to blow $12 an outing, you can ditch the 20 lb grill tank and adapter hose.
>>2775565>>2775564Looks solid to me>>2775710They look a lot like those black plastic tubes for mixing cement and I've used a regular children's sled from the dollar store>pic related
I love pike
>>2775710Oh. Well in that case, getting one of those is no problem at all. I just did a quick google search for plastic cargo sleds and there are some that are under $100 (and some which are fucking $600, which seems retarded to me).
>>2775765Pichael
>>2775765>removes the flesh from your finger when you try to remove the hooknothin personnel, angler....
>>2775765I hate them. They taste like shit and have the most obnoxious bones and are too aggressive so you always end up catching twice as many pike as you do whitefish or trout. The saving grace is that they are too skinny to get caught in a 4" gillnet.
It was fun getting pulled around by this thing in my kayak
>>2775803that's what your mom said
>>2775795>They taste like shit not where I'm from>have the most obnoxious bonesskill issue
>>2775733that rod look it's going to break fighting that big fish
>>2775824the line broke using that rod lmaoI did not catch it using that one though I did try at firstI had another medium heavy rod not in the picture with 15lb mono line that I used to catch it
>>2773011I actually saw a video on insta of a little kid pulling a bass up with one of those walmart combos. I thought for sure that thing would snap way before it bent that far, but it didnt.
https://archive.palanq.win/out/thread/2468262/#24721112 years ago I made a post in this general complaining about how I couldn't catch any big pike, and finally this morning that changed. It was kind of hard to get a proper picture showing its size but this pike was 36 inches long, absolutely shattering my previous record of 23 inches. I was fishing for bass without a steel leader but miraculously it was hooked right in the lip and couldn't bite through the line
>>2775771I had enough of this shit when I was a kid I carry several pliers of various lengths for removing shit from hell fish mouths.Fish shouldn't have fangs. It's fucked up.
>>2775997I thumb walleyes and anything gentler toothed, but yeah, you need to respect pike, cudas, bluefish, sharks, etc. But for me, the fear is for the fish that thrash like tards when you’re trying to get the hooks out of them (pike are in that category, too).
>>2775951nice
>>2775951he cute :)
I'm the saltwater to freshwater noob again, should I be crimping the barbs on my freshwater gear? The fish all look so small I don't want to hurt them too much.
>>2776062If you're allowed to use barbs where you live (some places ban them with a hefty fine if you get caught with them in the water) then it's a matter of personal preference. Barbless definitely hurts the fish less, especially if it gets hooked a bit more deeply, and getting the hook out is way easier. But it's also easier for the fish to get away.
>>2776001I thumbed a fluke once. It bit the fuck out of me. I ate him, so I won.
>>2773791How does one go about getting mussels? I'm getting carp fever, they're awesome (I pleasure myself with the carp)
>>2776150Pick them off bulkheads. They're everywhere
What are you supposed to throw at salmon that are (possibly) breeding? I have thrown everything I could think of directly in their faces and they just seem to not care
>>2776160I wish I knew
>>2776160Big swimbaits. Breeding salmon are no longer feeding, all you can do is get annoyance/nest defense strikes.Big spoons or spinners work too, fish them slow and near the bottom.
>>2776160Shiny. They don't eat. Pacific salmon die after the spawn so they're just defending their nests or trying to fuck. I use chatterbaits and spoons but they hit spoons most often
>>2776106Thanks, I'm crimping all my shit anyways I don't want to hurt them
I want to hurt fish. Fuck those stupid faggots
>>2776160Your options are basically reaction strikes or flossing.
>>2776234If you don't want to hurt them, don't go fishing.
>>2776497No respectable angler WANTS to hurt fish. That's just sadism. Of course fishing hurts the fish you catch, that's unavoidable, but if you CAN do less damage its better for everyone involved (the fish, you, and every other fisherman). Barbs lower the odds of a released fish surviving, which ultimately means less fish.Even when I'm going to kill and eat the fish I still do what I can to minimize its suffering. I think if you don't feel slightly bad when you kill a fish, you're probably a sociopath.
>>2776504If you kill a fish somehow while fishing or it dies later, something eats it. Maybe even baitfish. Circle of life. I mean don't kill it and still feels bad if you do, but it's not a waste really
>instead of buying cards in magic the gathering arena i bought fishing gear>500€this was also not smarti already lost 40 euros in snagged lures
go to the local fishing shop to talk with the dude and buy some lures, he charges me 500% more than a Chinese online store for the same product...
>>2776703I fucked up by doing the opposite. A guy came into where I work. I was pushing this one book, but I became self-conscious that I was being too Jewish, so I gave him a PDF scan of the book, thereby undercutting my employer.
>>2776725This is based, back in college one of our professors opened the first day of class by saying "yeah these textbooks are expensive and the school gets a cut, I actually found a website where you can get it for free, I've written it down on this piece of paper on my desk and I'm going to give it to the administration after class so they can take the website down. I'm going to go to my office because I have forgotten something, I trust that none of you will come up and take pictures of this paper while I am out." Saved us like $400
>>2776703Yes but you're supporting a local business and not giving your money directly to chinksects. Worth it.
how do you determine the depth or i guess structure of an area you are fishing if you are on shore?Today I was doing some bobber fishing in a pond and noticed I kept catching catfish and nothing else which made me think that I had the bobber lower than I intended
>>2776768Put a weight heavy enough to sink your bobber on the end of your line. Then adjust up or down until it is just barely submerged. The length of line from your bobber to weight is the depth. Works best with a slip bobber obviously.
>>2776743Nah dude the chinks got the money when the guy in the store bought them to stock. He probably got a better deal than you can find coz the bulk purchase.
Catch-and-release anglers, how do you moralize essentially hurting other animals for your own enjoyment? I am not some PETA-funded vegan, just genuinely curious. This hobby interests me and I've been wanting to give fly fishing a serious try, but I cannot get past that barrier of guilt I think I'd feel.
>>2776781i don't care about the suffering of fishi only try to be careful with the fish because it means there will be more fish for me to catch in the future
>>2776782So is it mostly just a matter of not believing they are complex enough to truly suffer? Or could you apply that same logic to a small mammal that one might "catch and release" whilst mildly hurting in the process.
>>2776783no I don't care about the suffering of an animalthat doesn't mean I find enjoyment in it, but it is a side effect of what I'm doingI do try to minimize that, not because it causes emotional stress to the fish but because I know it benefits me and other fishermen in the futureI think the same logic would apply to any catch an release activity, you have your fun and try to minimize damage so you can do it again in the future.
>>2776788I'm going to be honest and say that's a little more concerning of an answer than I was expecting. You don't care about the suffering of ANY animal? If somebody was catching and releasing cats, hurting and potentially mangling a paw or two in the process, would you not care about that?
>>2776789no I eat meatif I cared about the suffering of animals I wouldn't be eating meatI do not care
>>2776789shut the fuck up fag
>>2776801does not help your case
>>2776791these are not mutually exclusive beliefs
>>2776781use the proper tackle and handle the fish properly. for me fishing is more about exploring and seeing what kind of fish are in different bodies of water, not really "sport." kind of like trying to catch all of the pokemon in a sense. also to keep my survival skills sharp should I ever need them. being a bass boomer and bassmaster hooksetting a 5/0 ewg through a dink's skull is essentially the opposite way to do it but lots of people prefer to fish that way. then again that's why you can find dozens of fish floating every morning near the boat launch after suffocating in a livewell the day before.
Yesterday afternoon I made a popper
>>2776901It glows in the dark
>>2776902>>2776901Then I caught a smallmouth on a 7 inch hollow fleye

>>2776901>>2776902>>2776903Then I caught a 40 inch musky on the popper that evening
>>2776904No use it to stock consumables; lures you like, hooks, soft plastics you like, leaders, snaps, swivels, weights, bobbers, dry fly floatant, whatever you use and will either lose or run out of
