So I decided to leave the ants to drown for ~3 hours. About half the ants escape so I have to leave it outside. Then the other half drown and end up in the bowl. Quite a few dead ones left in the petals and only a few live. This at least made it easier to get rid of them

No. A late frost in July killed all of my annuals. I bought some clearance rack tomatoes and peppers to see if I could get some kind of yield and all of the peppers and half the tomatoes were eaten by grasshoppers. NTA. Just smother it. You can use tarps or cardboard. The cardboard will break down over a few months and you can plant through it or in some soil on top of it. You can also invert the lawn. Use a shovel to cut up and turn over small sheets of lawn so that the grass is covered and the roots are exposed. I don't recommend tilling. It won't kill all the grass and it will bring weed seeds to the surface.

I'd recommend horse manure. The grass is less digested so the organic matter lasts longer. Any manure will help condition your soil. You might want to mix in some crushed lump charcoal. It will help your soil hold nutrients.

It's landscaping fabric to suppress weeds and it's tilled before it was rolled there, I reclaimed this part of lawn just this may, this garden used to be significantly smaller, pic related.
I like using landscaping fabric so I don't need to weed but it's only possible when you are growing larger plants like peppers in this photo, something like radish needs to be sown far too densely for fabric to be viable

What I do when expanding my garden is:
>Remove topmost 5 cm of soil and throw it into the soil pile upside down to break down for when I need soil somewhere
>Till the remaining soil one spade deep and remove all roots and stones so rhizomes and trees won't fuck with my garden
>Level freshly tilled soil and it's ready for planting, you should plant or cover it asap to not give weeds any time to sprout
Optionally you can till in aged manure or fertilizer by throwing it on top after removing grass and tiling it in in the next step

Don't just cover it with cardboard, rhizomes and more stubborn weeds will easily survive this and bounce right back, you need to remove their roots and then weed anything that you missed plus you'll lose all that time you could be growing something there

Update on wine, after fermentation stops yeast will start to die and fall to the bottom with debris that got through filter screen, it's that white layer on the bottom.
While wine already got much clearer it'll be a long time before it's completely clear.

I figured out how much garlic I'll be able to plant in my new bed so I set aside enough bulbs. I'll be able to plant 60 which is nearly triple that of my old bed. With that much I'll probably start giving garlic away to people I know. But the more garlic I have the more I seem to use.

After it quite abruptly out of nowhere got really cold a week ago in Germany, with a nighttime low of around 5 C (40F for Americans) my chili plants that looked super healthy before got some unhealthy/battered looking leaves.
Temps are back up now, it was just 2 nights, but do I just leave them with a healthy serving of "it is what it is" or is there something I can do to help the plant be happier? Do I cut the affected leaves? Or are they still a net nutrient benefit?

beans generally grow like weeds. A 7 gallon pot should be more than enough for it to thrive. friends have grown 6ft tomato plants out of 5 gallon paint buckets, so don't worry.

Urine can be good for plants. Leafy greens like kale are heavy nitrogen feeders, so the urea should be beneficial. I think the high pH is what kills grass when dogs piss on it. Add a pH indicator like red cabbage juice and neutralize it with an acid like vinegar or dilute it with water until it's near 7 pH. Pic related. If it's pink or blue then it can damage the roots and kill the plant. You can also try soaking crushed lump charcoal in the urine for a week or two to make a slow release fertilizer that shouldn't affect the pH too much. I have never tried any of this with urine so if you do then post your results.

Plants around it seem unaffected so far.

What's happening to my cantaloupe?

First time growing anything in the area, just used the soil below. They seemed to do fine until fruiting.

What's up guys. I just got done with a work contract that had me gone 6 days a week, so the garden is looking wild. Here in zone 9b, the only thing you can grow in the summer is okra, which is why I have the wild patch on the side of my house. I started some brassicas a few weeks ago but they got leggy. The ones that survived transplanting are looking pretty decent. I started some more a few days ago, and my girlfriend started some flowers. I'll start the faster growing greens in a few weeks when average daily temp gets down to 85

Frost is pretty rare in my climate (central North American corn country) until the last week of October, but almost everything edible loses considerable growing thrust by now due to the lower length and intensity of daylight, pretty much regardless of conditions in other respects. Some tropicals like mandevilla and impatiens, that hate dry heat or temperatures anywhere above 30C noticeably improve, but so also does just about any dianthus, at the same time that volunteer violas come back as if from the grave of August's desert heat. Recently I've collected hundreds of seed-heads from about a dozen petunias I especially like, both heirloom packet variety and some only available as commercially grown plants, that I've grown right next to eachother in short range of pollinators, just to see what the results are next year.

To be honest, it probably depends on the stage of growth. (not the kid's) Even zucchini becomes more of an inedible gourd than a table item if it gets above a certain size and consistency. It also happens that the kind of pumpkins grown for pie are rather smol, and a lot less watery than those grown for Halloween lanterns. Not that I'd eat either in the form of squash.

Simple food grade PVC tube is enough, one end goes into wine the other needs to be primed, you can simply draw air in with your mouth but if you are afraid of contamination (shouldn't happen with so much alcohol) you can get a pipe with a hand pump.
Some sediment will get into your tube, it's basically inevitable if you want to get all the liquid out so using some sort of filter is a good idea.
You might need to tilt the jar to get everything out.
You can do it on your own if you have something to hold the other end of the tube for you but if you can get help it's much easier done with someone's help.

While it's possible to get all the liquid out it's usually not worth the hassle, just get rid of this.

With wine siphoned and yeast removed now I'll leave it for at least a month, it'll slowly clear over time.

Fun, but extremely gay fact: Cutting melons like this is why melons are like the fourth highest source of food poisoning. You take your knoife to the dirty melon skin and use the blade to force whatever lived on the skin down into the sweet flesh that it, and you, want to eat, and if it happens to be something that would make you sick, you end up eating it along with the flesh and getting sick.
The "proper" way to do it is to peel melons before cutting them. That said, I bash them in with a baseball bat and eat the chunks, personally.

I'm going to have to cover my tomatoes tomorrow. I've been lucky so far. The first frost is a couple weeks late and the lows come up after that. A really late last frost killed all my tomatoes after they had been transplanted and I replaced them with some cheap tomatoes I found marked way down at a hardware store. You can grow it in containers, but I grow it in the garden in a pretty suboptimal spot near a wall in half shade, it's a surprisingly easy to grow plant. Takes like 3 years to bear fruit though if you grow it from seed. Only real danger would be if it was in soil that didn't drain well enough, but other than that it just does it's thing. It even handles the cold well.
I'm in Germany, so winters do get cold, and it doesn't have any issue with that.

Check the pH. I suspect it's too high to grow most plants, but some like high pH. You can extract the clay and use it to line a hole so it retains water and then you can probably grow pond or bog plants. You can amend it with sand or crushed lump charcoal to make it more loamy and that might help you grow a wider variety of plants. Some kind of organic matter like compost will also help to improve the soil. Obviously your native plants should grow just fine in it too.

It was mostly wild grass and bushes. Probably because it has thin layer or proper soil above it. Didn't see much trees. Just fig and few random trees without fruit. Do you know how is this type of soil called? What is the biggest problems with soil like this?

You can test the pH using cabbage juice as an indicator. Soak the soil with your indicator and let it sit for like an hour, then filter the soil out and check the color against the chart in this post >>2777273

Not sure what you mean by that, but vinegar won't change the pH by very much for very long. Lowering the pH of soils is very difficult. In large agricultural applications they use a calculated amount of sulfuric acid periodically, but that's temporary too. It will be easier for you to use compost or other organic matter to change the pH, but it will take a lot.

Interesting. You should check your soil texture. It might not be as high in clay as you think. I'll post a picture for how to test the texture by hand, but you can also use a jar of water. Get a sample, remove the rocks so they don't break the jar, and then add your soil to the jar of water. Give it around 5 minutes to hydrate and then shake the jar. Let it settle for like an hour. It will settle out into sand, silt, and clay with sand being on the bottom and clay being on top. The thickness of the bands is the proportion of each in your soil. You can measure the layers with a ruler if you want to be more precise. Then you can use a soil texture triangle to determine the texture of your soil. I'll post that in another post. You might also want to note the proportion of gravel to soil.

Probably some kind of aridisol if it's all rocks and clay with very low organic matter. It's hard to tell just by looking.

Are you sure it's not 50% clay, 10% silt, and 40% sand? If you push your fingers to the bottom and pull a pinch out is it gritty? Either way your soil texture is definitely clay, but if I see the layers properly then it's close to being sandy clay or clay loam. The limestone raising the pH over 7 is the biggest problem for your soil in my opinion.

Did try. It feels like there are some particle of sand in the clay at the bottom. But not much. It is only present in bottom 20-25% rest is just silky/creamy. I would say at least 75% ultra fine uniform particles at top and the bottom mixed some sand with clay or whatever. I tried do scoop some with the spoon and that about 75-80% sticks to the spoon and bottom 20-25% is less compact.

I think you should try to put down a living mulch of alfalfa. It won't grow well, but if you water in a mycorrhizal inoculant that has nitrogen fixing bacteria then it will add nitrogen to your soil and improve the soil organic matter. Just mow it or cut it short periodically. Try growing crops off of that list I gave you. Use the crop residue as a mulch for sheet composting. It will take years to improve the soil to the point that you can grow other crops so you might want to try container gardening for crops that won't tolerate high pH like tomatoes.

10 foot tall cherry tomato plant still doing well in the greenhouse. I have a step ladder in there to help get the ones high up. A week ago I trimmed the leaders as it is getting late for any new flowers to amount to anything. Running out of vertical room to grow, some of the branches grew sideways another 4 feet.

I decided to do a fall garden to get better at seed starting for next season and I'm still having problems starting in trays. I know the seed starting mix I got isn't optimal and I can blame the slow growth on it, but to me, these endive seedlings look pale. Which is the same problem I had in spring. I don't understand, there's more sunlight now, higher temps and this mix has earthworm castings vs. the basically inert coco coir mix I used in spring. I do not understand.

Nah. Tomatoes are perennials. As long as you can keep them from freezing to death they'll grow for years. You might have to worry about them getting leggy without extra light, or getting root rot if they outgrow their containers

I screwed the feet to some pressure treated wood and covered the wood base in dirt on one side because the green house straddles the edge of the garden. Its also much heavier than a typical greenhouse of that size since I made it out of an old gazebo frame with 4x the footprint. It has been very stable even on days where we had 90 km/h winds, but it never really takes the full brunt of the wind as it is shielded by fences.

Despite the recent ground frost and cold weather peppers are still in good shape.
Harvested 4 kilograms today, they aren't fully ripe but I doubt they would reach full ripeness this late into season if I left them for longer anyways.

Truthfully, I don't know how that variety tastes. My usual pumpkin uses would be as oven veggies (similar to how you would prepare oven potatoes), soups, and pumpkin pie. It also makes a good addition to curries, again like you'd use potato.
40 kgs is a lot though, friends and family might enjoy a pumpkin as a gift I suppose, and as you said they might work well as feed.

nights are frosty already so pumpkins were harvested while still yellow in color, they'll ripen and turn orange by Christmas.
wine, dehydrate, pureed, and just boiled/baked as chicken feed is probably all ill bother trying this year
ive found puree to be quite versatile. easy to substitute water in recipes for bread, non-intrusive addition to sauces and some stews. i assume dehydrated pumpkin powder works similarly

I have "Okinawa" and "African Orange" this year, they are much better than the ones I bought in grocery store and planted last year.

bathroom cayenne pepper plant is doing great
today i added some soil to the pot, since it settled over the now almost 2 years its been there, i also put some woodchips to help even out the watering & hopefully keep the gnats away
i also took one of the branches & raised it up, hopefully it'll act as a new trunk
