Summer's over, did you get shit done? edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

it's a meme because it's a technological crutch that people with a modicum of skill and conscientiousness never had a need for

24 bit audio was historically considered excessive. it's not a game changer like being able to place a focus point anywhere in the frame or use autofocus at all, replacing the need for highly precise motor skills and extremely sharp eyesight. it's more like subject detection and tracking AF. cool for a new user but everyone who minds their own work can already place a focus point themselves. a literal disabled child can run with single point AF and a touchscreen these days.
>>
>>4468573
>people with a modicum of skill and conscientiousness never had a need for
Lies. It's a surprisingly common occurrence for high budget films to need to rerecord audio, or foley, because the levels unexpectedly peaked. If you ever attend film festivals, you'll see lots of films where this has happened and they couldn't afford to adr. If you watch documentaries it's also very apparent because they can't rerecord.
Unexpected volume peaks happen. On top of that, it saves so much time to not have to monitor levels while recording. There's literally no reason to be this snooty about it.
>it's not a game changer like being able to place a focus point anywhere in the frame or use autofocus at all
When usable autofocus first started appearing in dslrs, people were much more critical than you about how unnecessary and detrimental it was, often using the exact same argument that it was a crutch that people with skill had no need for. It happened in this very general more times than I can count.
>>
>>4468573
>it's a meme because it's a technological crutch that people with a modicum of skill and conscientiousness never had a need for
If anything things are worse now because it wasn't like you got much time to work as a sound recorder before, now there's even less because people assume 32 will cover it, but it can't fix mic issues or placement
>>
>>4468573
>it's a technological crutch
lmao
>>
>>4468280
People usually take "32bit float" to mean "you can't make this audio input clip by overloading it", but the preamp's and the converter's headroom in the analog domain are very much finite, so using a higher digital resolution doesn't solve anything and produces needlessly bigger files.
The thing that can be helpful if you're unable to set the input gain control to an acceptable level is an automatic input gain feature that lowers the input gain when the signal would overload something, but this works the same way with 24bit fixed point files save for a few added dB of noise, but the noise of a 24bit file is already -144dBFS, so negligible for even high end audio production.

The non-meme solution is simply to set up the input gain so that the loudest sound you expect on set doesn't overload anything, and then lower it by an additional 12dB to 24dB to make sure nothing clips even if a louder sound is recorded.

with this little shits crop factor this is a 1380mm lens

Does /p/ approve of IR / full spectrum photography? Is it legit or a meme? It seems it is mostly used for landscapes, but I'm wondering what else you could explore with it, outside of forensics and other nerd shit.

I have adjusted a 35mm SMC Takumar which could not focus to infinity with EF adapter. Was not that hard after finding out how to and improvising a name ring removing tool, like rubber basin cap of right size (I used a plastic cap and piece of bike inner tire). But that of course depends of the lens.
>>
>>4468503
That's weird because all of my m42 lenses focus a little bit past infinity on an EOS SLR without any modification, I have a 35mm Tak f3.5 as well and it works. Maybe your particular adapter is thicker and holding the lens farther out acting as a sort of very weak macro tube.

when it comes to planetary. a refractor would technically be best due to no central obstruction decreasing contrast. realistically getting a large and well corrected refractor is very very VERY expensive and not viable.

For planetary imaging for armatures a newtonian reflector is best. Dont let people tell you to get an SCT they SUCK.

A large newtonian with a nominally sized secondary mirror is ideal. The bigger the mirror the more it is able to resolve details

don't blow your wad on an IR DSLR for wildlife ID. they make much cheaper IR "night vision" video cameras and monoculars for that.

IR DSLRs are for artistic/forensics/scientific/astronomy use.

night vision digiscoping has 0% in common with photography
>>
>>4464912
I'm aware a IR DSLR is probably overkill but they don't seem to cost much for basic versions, it would be nice for it to be able to be used for basic astronomy and also i can be sure to be able to get a T mount for it.
>>
>>4464929
>>4464912
As an addendum while the primary goal is wildlife ID if we pull this off the kid will almost certainly be in the news so decent quality is a big plus.

Have you ever gotten a strong emotional response after viewing a specific phot, like you would in a movie ? Or maybe going to an exhibition or reading a book ? Or is photography just "pretty cool" at best ?
Pic related is the first response I got when searching " best art photography ever" online. While it's really good and impressive, I can't really say it makes me feel anything in my gut.

Post pics that make you feel something, inspiring photographers/books etc.

there is more to architecture as an art than making healthy constructions to live in. Some buildings are meant to inspire terror, pride, contemplation. Making it healthy is just optimization, the same way you optimize a chair to be light and comfortable. That has nothing to do with art

Again, yes you can objectively measure subjective responses to art. That's nothing new and any materialist could have seen it coming.

>It's no wonder the west is a hotspot of mass shootings and violent hatred
You mean the US right ? They dug their own grave themselves without the need for art

>All of these degrade the mind and make people stressed, violent, and stupid
What makes them stressed and violent is the rich accumulating more and more wealth and squeezing everyone else out of their money. That's a phenomenon that's been very well documented and is much easier to measure irl. Also, the common folk doesn't care for modern art, they don't go to museums or the gallery, yet they vote more and more for fascist movements.

>The chinese are much smarter than white pseudointellectual contrarians and know that beautiful art makes people calm, civilized, and more intelligent.
But aren't you a pseudo-intellectual contrarian yourself ? It's an easy claim to make.

Ok I think I tried all there is. This is my takeaway.

>Lr/LrC
Industry standard for a reason. Shit company, shit policy, but gets the job done and does it well.
Price is actually okay and windows users can easily pirate.

>ON1
Actually like it and imo the best replacement for Lr/LrC.
Has all the features you need/want including AI but minus catalogue.
AI is on par with Adobe, sometimes worse, sometimes better.
Performance on windows is about the same as Adobe, can lag more or less.
Discounted price is cheaper than Adobe but "lifetime" license is a scam of course since upgrades will cost.

Lightroom isn't the industry standard and it's objectively garbage software full of bugs and poor support for high end cameras (can't even render arw/raf files properly OOTB)
>>
>>4468594
lightroom is "industry standard" in the way windows and canon are

it's low end industry standard, like, garbage tier industry that doesn't really matter and could use anything else but they're <100 IQ boomers and use what they were raised on without questioning it

its exactly like when "windows is industry standard" says the paper pusher that hasn't been replaced by AI yet but the entirety of management, R&D, etc uses macs for their superior security/stability/corporate asset management

Yes. I shot a girl who was trying to get into black tape project and she spontaneously did topless shots during our shoot (her idea). I didn’t pay her although we did split the cost of the hotel room we shot in.
I also did nude shots of a girl who wanted them for her premium Snapchat and didn’t pay her.

Huh, wild. Didn’t know what I was missing out on until now, damn

Good afternoon!
I have been an amateur enthusiast film photographer for a few years now.
I have been shooting with my Nikon N65 and the standard kit lens that it came with.
I am hoping to make my first big upgrade to a better lens.
I was eyeing a 35mm lens as I like to take pictures similar to pic related (it is an actual picture I took)

Any input is appreciated
I apologize in advance for any lack of insight
