Can anyone give me a tip for better pictures with what I have to work with? When I go down to f/2 the results are always very blurry even though I'm manually focusing to the shortest distance and then moving the camera close to achieve the closest possible shot. I'm carefully checking the focusing to get it right on the insect's head by using the red outline indicators but still very blurry on the targeted area compared to higher apertures.

for better macro, you have to close the aperture, even f/8 is relatively thin

I guess it was in focus at f/8, so going to f/16 just lowered the sharpness a bit due to diffraction.

ken rockwell insists the best macro shots are made at f/32, but they already start getting noticeably softer at f/16. so, to compensate for the small details getting blurry, you pursue more magnification, it never ends.

you can always use focus stacking although that's nearly impossible ouside. I actually don't know how they stack bugs at all. are the bugs dead or frozen or fixed in place or what?

Focus stacking, even manual, is possible under certain conditions outside
This one is a stack of 20 shots taken with a macro rail within ~30 s
Not perfect but whatever artifacts there are are largely due to the fly's suboptimal geometry and the perspective, not because of wind or other movement

To stack manually with a rail, the following factors are advantageous
>shooting in the morning around sunrise when bugs are less mobile
>shooting in the forest or in a deep valley where there is less wind
>a (good) tripod
>a cable release
>being lucky with the weather (overcast yet windless day)

Anyone use monopods for macro in the field?
I was thinking about buying one to maybe help with camera shake.
>>
>>4212427
What shutter speeds do you usually shoot at? Do you use a flash?
>>
>>4212427
Try it with a stick first. Does monopod work well, and it'll give you an idea what to expect.
>>
>>4210238
very cool man
>>
>>4212527
No flash, though i think about buying one too.
Speed from 180 to 60 depending on light and target.

>>4212528
With stick? Wouldn't it make harder, as I have to balance camera on stick?
I guess I might try, but kinda doubt it will be similar experience.

I think I should go back there and see if I can find more of them
They're difficult to shoot but all you need is patience and super slow movements
Happy with the repro rate but not with the composition

>>4212814
I'd get a flash (and a diffusor) before you get a monopod
A flash will allow you to shoot at any light, a diffusor will make things look nice despite using a flash
A monopod can be helpful at times, but those scenarios are limited (wanting to shoot static subjects at suboptimal natural light but not having time for a tripod)

Oh oki, any flashes can work in burst mode tho?
I recently started to focus stack, is it possible to combine those?
>>
>>4213607
Depends on how strong a flash you need, what shutter speeds you want to shoot at and how many frames you want to shoot
For still subjects, you can simply use an interval >0 s, otherwise I'd get a big flash like the Godox v860 and set it to 1/16 or so
Should be enough to sustain a couple of frames, the camera will automatically throttle the frame rate if not
>>
>>4213611
So it is a possibility, nice to know thanks!

I love macro photography because I am autistic and interested in small things like fungi and such. However, I also appreciate photography as an art form. Can macro photography be art? I feel like it's challenging for me to make an aesthetically compelling macro scenes because there's normally just the subject and nothing else, and I'm focused on lighting the subject well and getting it sharp and that's it. What are your most artistic, aesthetically pleasing macro photos? Either that you've taken or that you know.

let's talk about freezing motion and balancing ambient light with flash
tell me more about how flash freezes motion like i'm a complete idiot that doesn't understand
i understand it if the background is black, but not if there's ambient light. is there a term for an acceptable level of ambient exposure that gets completely 'stamped over' by the flash?
thinking about strapping 2 flashes together for my setup. just 1 isn't enough anymore for power and recycling time

Finally got my diffuser from Ali Express.
My Godox TT350, which I bought a few weeks ago, is a piece of trash I think. Maybe the batteries I bought with it are trash, but it kept showing low battery on fresh ones, straight from the pack. If new batteries from the store don't help, I am returning it.
Anyway, rant over, here is a ladybird from my first real foray into macro photography.

How the heck is this guy focus stacking

Olympus cameras can do that if you hold very still and so does the bug.

There's a reason the om-d e-m1 ii is still recommended for beginners who might want to do anything. It just gets digishit tier when its dim is all.

I don't think you need anything truly special to do hand held focus stack in the field with live insects.
On a basic level you just need to know the manual power for your flash rather than using TTL.
Just set your camera to manual flash power, on high/continuuous shooting mode and just hold the shutter down as you move forward and back, in and out with your body. Rapid fire machine gun shots.
The thing is that the bug needs to be pretty much completely motionless for this to work. Most of my macro stuff is on bees, butterflies so I've pretty much given up on the idea of giving a fuck about focus stacking for now.
Then sometimes I'll go on flickr or whatever and search a specific bee, and see a really awesome focus stacked shot of the bee ... except the bee is dead, and it's been posed in the studio!

I didn't even bother... sometimes it's more fun to just let people continue being wrong and looking foolish. People carry these beliefs outside of anonymous imageboards, you know. Don't correct them, let them make fools of themselves.

I bought that vivitar 70-210mm macro zoom lens that we talked about in last thread; and guess what. I'm too fucking dense to use it as macro lense. Does it need something additional like macro rings? What camera option should i use?
Other than that, its a decent one as you can see by that slightly out of focus birb.

monopods are for sports/supertele use, panning/tracking shots, and for video.
People who buy them to improve sharpness in regular photography are always disappointed.
You should invest in a remote flash with diffuser like anon said, or get an expensive tripod.
>t. work in a camera shop, can't stop these fucking boomers from buying monopods

If you want to go macro without buying another objective, you could get macro rings that will let you get closer with the one you already have, they're pretty cheap, and considering the alternative is another lens, they're practically pennies.
I'll also recommend closing the aperture a little bit to gain more depth, the closer you get to something, the shallower the depth of field, meaning that a smaller bit of what you're photographing is in focus, pic related.

Cool thread.

This was done using a 50 mm prime lens with an inverter ring and a mini softbox mounted directly above the end of the lens. Even at f16 (shooting completely blind) it took 3 stacked photos to get this amount of DoF.

>>

Stop down and use flash and a diffuser. What focal length are you using it with? Take a photo of a ruler: you want it to be around 1:1 of your sensor size (IME). If your lens isn't insanely sharp it won't look good beyond that with any diopter. If it's a zoom then zoom out.

Ah yeah that's totally different. For boosting a macro lens your depth of field is gonna be razor thin. Time to get into extreme focus stacking, hope you have a powerful computer. What is giving you trouble exactly?

How extreme? With my macro rail I can do 10 micron increments but usually 50 is ok.

Sadly, it's got less detail after compression to 4chan than the original.
Canon R7, RF 100-400 f/5.6-8
ISO 6400, f/8.0, 1/1250 Shutter Speed

It's about 1/3 crop of the original image. Sharpened up in LR, with some unsharpness masking across the whole image.

Those results come out pretty good as is, but I wanted to push for more resolution of the hairs, and I find AI based denoising causes unwanted color shifts and texture changes on insects. Instead, I used a subject detection mask, and then duplicated and inverted it. The inverted mask had some extra NR to my taste, and then the subject mask has extra sharpening. DESU, working with the same image in Canon's DPP produced similar results with less steps, but DPP is slower and harder to work with IMO.

To be honest, it felt a little silly to jump from m43 to an APS-C crop in 2023, but I realized the R7 with a 24 f/1.8 macro and RF 100-400 covers most of my needs. I'll get a 100-500 at some point, maybe a used EOS R for lowlight/family photos.

I like the original one more, too. The bottom can be sacrificed no problem if the format calls it (like 8x10 instead of 8x12)
But if you wanted to be cool and you were posting it on Instagram or something you could include a second shot to swipe to that has got an even closer crop than the second shot, almost right to the antennae. Because you know people want to see that.

It lets me cheat the shutter speed a bit. I use the RF 24 1.8 most of the time for macro (see the grasshopper photo up thread). It’s nice to have almost 40mm equivalent lens for walking around and then drop into .5x macro (I don’t care much for 1x+, I like insects in their natural context)

pros (for hotshoe flashes)
>higher synch speed

cons
>light always from the front (flat subjects)
>heavier

Isn’t that just because a hotshoe flash can be used for other things, whereas a ‘dedicated’ macro flash has no extra uses.
>>
>>4255692
>a ‘dedicated’ macro flash has no extra uses.
it's a flash you can place literally anywhere (within the radio range) I'd say it's more useful than a regular hotshoe flash, but a normal one is just simpler in every way, just one extra thing thing to have/charge batteries for instead of 2 or 3, you don't need to find a way to keep it still in the place you want it to be, it's just there ready to blind some unsuspecting fool.

So if I only plan on using my flash for macro, should I get a lens mounted flash system or hot shoe?
>>
>>4257519
You should get a hotshoe and cygnustech or similar diffuser, or get a hotshoe remote trigger so you can hold the flash off to the side from various angles
>>
>>4257588
This. Cables work fine for macro too and are very cheap. The diffuser is key.
>>
>>4257193
Really nice. Probably a Xanthoria/Xanthomendoza/some other segregate genus species. The yellow color is caused by parietin, a special pigment among a wide class of lichen compounds. It turns purple with application of KOH. The granules are soredia, which are an asexual propagule containing both the fungus and the algae (lichen are fungus/algae or fungus/bacteria symbioses) and the discs are apothecia, which are sexual reproductive bits.
What's your lens setup to get 2.5:1? Is this a stack?

Laowa 90mm 2:1 + 36mm in extension tubes = ~2.4:1 magnification, I also cropped in a decent amount. Was thinking of getting 50mm tubes for true 2.56:1 but the difference probably isn't that significant.

Macro all too often requires both hands and wasting one for holding your flash will ruin a lot of shots
Diffusors are great but they're also in the way more often than you will like
Macro mini flashes don't really need diffusors if you use them up close (though on intermediary distances diffusors can be helpful=
I bought the AK ones for my Godox flashes and used them a couple of times - turns out I don't really need them

Is there a dof calculator that also helps you with imagine stacks? Or: does anyone know the math behind this so I can make one?
>>
>>4258177
I'd like params to include:
- f number to stay under
- depth wanted in focus
- focal length
And get out: number of stacks to aim for and distance to move the camera on the focus rail after each shot. Does this exist and/or would it actually be useful?

I did that bc it was my immediate need. and it means you’ll have your normal range covered as you start acquiring lenses, so you can out your $ immediately into a nice wide or long lens afterward, instead of losing $ rafting up duplicate 50’s & having to resell later. After a very spendy & lossy journey, I’m happily down to a 20, 50macro, and an 85, and I’m happy as a pornstar with two peckers. Should have just started & ended there.

Why didn't you further close down the aperture and compensate by increasing the exposure so you can capture more of this mushroom in focus? Surely you can handle this without a tripod.

I got a lens a while back and the guy threw in a couple of accessories, uv filter, polarization, etc. he also bundled a little macro lens adapter thing you can just stick on to the end of the lens
took a bit of getting used to but it seems to do the basics
focus is rather shallow though, would be nice to get the whole flower in focus
>>
>>4276924
Diopters like what you got are great. If you zoom in all the way and focus as close as you can with your lens and take a photo of a ruler you'll be able to figure out magnification. If your image is as wide as your sensor you're at 1:1, which is what macro lenses get you. The tradeoff is it probably gives you worse IQ than a real macro lens, but hey it's cheap and convenient. I use my Raynox all the time.
>focus is rather shallow though, would be nice to get the whole flower in focus
This on the other hand is strictly a matter of magnification, so a real macro lens would not help you here. You must stop down as much as you can tolerate (you run into diffraction after around f/16 on a FF camera). If that's not enough you must focus stack. Stopped down your image will have motion blur most likely, so flash (with a small diffuser ideally) is your best bet. I cannot recommend a standalone flash and a little foldup diffuser enough if you want to get great macro shots.

The 60mm for sure. It's cheap, weather sealed, gives you lots of working distance. The 30mm is good for studio work, it's 1.25x and extension tubes do more. The 60mm is also faster, it works great as a portrait lens as well. Newer OM bodies can do in body stacking too.

I went with a panasonic gx8 and a laowa 50mm apo macro, because 2x, it can't do any fancy focus stacking though since it focuses manually.
