For those who go to conventions and other events featuring cosplayers, how is your experience? I plan on going to a few next year, but I'm curious as to what gear I should bring. I'm an absolute beginner with just a T7i, so I want to know what I should be saving up for to buy in order to get some nice portaits taken.

Also just general cosplay photography thread

My experience has been positive in general, if you are polite people will gladly let you take their photo.

depends of the venue,if its outdoors like the photo you just posted you probably will be fine, what lens are you thinking of using?

If its inside well, a flash or a fast lens. At least on my experience with anime conventions its always fucking dark inside.

For the last convention that I went I decided to shoot film for the lulz, got some nice ones but forgot my own advice and didn't brought a flash lel

I did cosplay photography for a while and these people seriously do not bathe, so get ready to smell a lot of body odor. I was pretty amazed that even the cuter and fairly normal looking girls even smelled terrible.

It's like if you filled your clothes hamper with a weeks worth of stuff you wore in summer but that smell from the hamper is combined into just one costume. It's very intense.

Not really, b.o is b.o and like I said, it's made very potent from either their lack of bathing or from never cleaning their clothes.

This is a good tip. Try using something with a magnetic mount so you can install and remove the ND quickly.

Well if you're there to set up a photo booth then yes. If you're there to enjoy the convention then you're better off with something on-camera. You could get an on-camera Profoto plus a big softbox mounted on a flash bracket though. It's still very cumbersome but at least you're mobile and can enjoy the show. Picrel

If the convention only lasts for a weekend or so then I suggest renting gear first. I like zooms for events but that's because I own them already. I don't have specific comments on that particular lens. If you use your kit lens then you won't even need an ND, which brings us to:
>>4264707
>magnetic ND
"kase" seems like the only worthwhile one. I wonder why "big-name" manufacturers haven't made them yet but oh well. Make sure you get the biggest reasonable filter size you can get (used to be 77mm; these days might have gone up to fucking 86mm) and just use cheap adapter rings for all your lenses. Don't shellout another $200 for a smaller ND when a $2 ebay adapter ring can do the job. Of course it looks ridiculous having a 77mm ND hanging off a kit lens but you save money.
Otherwise ditch the "nice portaits" thing and just go enjoy the show.
>>
>>4264723
>Wonder how his photo turned out
You'd need a very powerful flash because you lose "a couple of stops" of light with a softbox. Indoors this is not too bad (although white balancing can get real shitty real fast). Outdoors, especially with high speed sync, a "regular" on-camera flash may well be dumping into a softbox at full power while none of it reaches the subject.

I would bring my standard kit (this all fits in a bag in my trunk I'm not hauling this shut around) so 24-70 vr for walk/impromptu cosplay photos. Then 70-200vr incase they want to do lol random run around cosplay shots, (Naruto running) and then my 200-500 on the d500 for those 750mm pansu shots on escalators.
Oh and while not part of my normal kit the 50mm 1.4 incase you need to focus on a single freckle on someone's face.
So basically just a 24-70 and you should be good.

Tried it once and didn’t like it. You are just a paparazzi. The girl is standing in some random spot and light and you just have to make do.

I also photographed some fashion runways which is the same shit.

I far prefer doing a portrait session so you can actually get nice light and composition and time to take some proper photos not just rushed snapshits.

Still worth doing for the experience but I can’t see it as an ongoing thing as there is no way to differentiate yourself from the hundred other ppl there doing the same thing.
>>
>>4265836
for me personally, although the main thing I want to benefit from is experience, I'm also hoping to network and possibly find some models to do traditional shoots with, as that's my end goal
>>
>>4265848

Yeah you can easily get the girls details as you need some way to send her the photos and she will want the photos.

You will want all the photos done edited and sent by the end of the day. If you don’t the other photographers will and she will just use there photos. A few days after the event the whole thing is forgotten and the girl will never post anything from it ever again.

Speed is king. Have presets already figured. Just apply and send
>>
>>4265866
Honestly I don't have any premade presets to use, I usually make a preset from the first photo I edit in a set as a base and apply it to the other photos. It's kind of hard because a lot of photos I take are pretty varied in color and lighting, so I always just edit it by hand for most of the time and separate them by sets.

I'm both a cosplayer and a photographer, usually I go cosplay and bring a camera with me to take pictures of cosplayers I know or like, I use a 6d full frame with a fast 50mm and i recomend using a 35mm or 50mm max, here the places are usually crowded so you have to be lucky to use a telephoto, usually only in a championship or something. I don't bring flashes but sometimes I bring a rgb led stick. Just don't be weird and/or disturb them eating and people will be happy to pose to you.

Went to my first ever anime con this March. I've been taking pictures for like half a year as a hobby at that point.

Took my Sony A7C with 85mm F/1.8. The con lasted 3 days, first day I just walked around to scout the place and get into the mood, didn't take any pictures as I was overwhelmed with the amount of people there and I felt strange coming up to people asking them for photos.

Second day, I said fuck it, in the morning walked to the first cosplayer asked, if she wouldn't mind having her pictures taken and that started it all, been there for 9 hours+, took a lot of pics, spoke with a lot of people. It was a very nice learning experience for me.

Protip: it's a good thing, if you know what the fuck their character is, so you can ask them for specific poses or shit, I didn't know that, but I had waboo friend with me helping me around.

Perfectly adequate for waist-up portraits. Remember, it depends on the relative size of the light to your subject, having it very close will give an appealing wrap-around effect. By using a silver reflector that is adjacent to the key light, you can bounce your key and rim to act as a fill.

I suppose this isn't specific to cos photography but please for the the love of god stop fucking shooping the shit out of the average e-celeb "pro cosplayer" in your photos.
unless
>they're specifically paying you for that
>you're trying to make a style more similar to the media source/character
It looks downright embarrassing for your work.

that aside: how do you deal with venues' abhorrent lighting? personally I've been taking some lights of my own or shooting outside, but carrying lights in venues without lockers gets exhausting, and not every cosplayer is willing to walk all the way outside with you just for 1 photo

200w? what is he doing? taking pictures of ants?

here are some actual tips if you faggots actually mean shooting some photos with your cameras:

1
if you can, buy and learn how to use 3 strobes (1 main/2 fill), preferably 4 - although you wont use 4 light setup as much as you will 3 light setup, especially if you shoot outdoors much

2
main light STUDIO: 400W is minimum, 600W perfect
main light OUTDOORS: 600W is minimum, 800-1000W is perfect
fill light: always use 100-200W weaker fill lights

>bros never been a meter from a woman before
some womens b.o. smells worse than black people or indians b.o.,

ive tried cosplay photography for a solid year, going to conventions to find ''clients'' aka whores who want professional pictures taken of them and not just softcore snapshits and while they are 99% of the time paying more than your average model, walking around those conventions is 100x worse than walking around a 3rd world country gym locker room that hasnt been cleaned for years...

i dont even know how to describe the smell, its that unique and that bad. its like, have you even smelled a hobo? its like that but worse because its not stale smell its like fresh, if you know what i mean. its so fucking bad. its like you ever smelled a rotting cat corpse that is like dried up and a fresh corpse? its not like the dried up one its like a fresh cat corpse that just got worms on it, thats the only way i can explain the fresh BO smell of these people. its not the smell of an unwashed hobo its a radiating, fresh smell its fucking disgusting.

A COB light has only one bulb, therefore it pales in comparison to my quinsexzillion bulbs aliexpress key fob.

Your measurements are wrong. You don't ever include manufacturer ratings for lumens because they use a reflector with a beam angle tighter than your zoomer bunghole.
>>

>here are some actual tips if you faggots actually mean shooting some photos with your cameras.

Alright then, show me a photo you didn't pluck from Pinterest.

A good photographer isn't inhibited by his equipment, but works around those limitations. By extension of your logic you would tell every beginner to mortgage their house for an Arri Alexa because muh zero compromise.
>>
>>4264320
I regret buying a softbox. It's the amateur/beginner photographer look. Once you go umbrellas you never go back.

BIG umbrellas.

>>4280900
Did the ISO dial on your hasselblad break already? Is it stuck on 50 now? The aperture setting broke too right? Stuck on the smallest? Is that why you think you need a 1000w light to work with the sun? 600w to 1000w is less than a full stop, retard.
>>
>>4280862
It still looks shit, it's not just noise/sharpness
>>
>>4280998
I mean if we’re being real, most of these cosplay “photographers” would still be shooting shit even in perfect light. Things like that pic of the guy in the lake up the thread are quite the exception. They may as well just allow a bit more flexibility by letting that iso ride, I say.

>an absolute beginner with just a T7i
If you're going to shoot humans who have spent more money just to attend an event than your entire kit is worth don't be surprised if you get laughed at once in a while for having such a cheapshit camera. APS-C is a meme and has way more noise per shot than full frame and there's no way around it. Your images won't be very clean even at the base ISO setting.

You should be using full frame at least and a high quality lens, depending on the lighting (if indoors) you should also be using a tripod or monopod/gimbal to ensure steady shots.
If you're not shooting RAW, just bring your smartphone instead.

Assume that you are not important at all and may be the 50th or 250th faggot with a camera approaching them asking them for photos. Many won't remember you at all, unless you do a good job and credit them/tag their socials when sharing a good shot. If you photograph men they will have fewer people approaching them so may give you more of their attention.
Also keep in mind every good cosplayer knows at least a dozen photography people and some may have expensive equipment. Some probably own their own cameras and shoot themselves at home. Many of them won't be interested in randoms taking photos of them. It's not the early 2000s anymore. Cameras are everywhere and can even be annoying. Treat it accordingly.

Just a shout out to my boi the reflector. Hugely great tool for photography of cosplayers.
Use the white side when its bright and sunny. Have the subject stand in a shadowed area, and then bounce the sunlight back in at them while you stand in the light.
Or silver side in overcast/darker situations.
Easy to carry, and a lot less heavy and probably more reliable than a flash setup, with likely better photo results anyway. And 1000% less dorky too.

>They're technically good but they really are the definition of soulless+boring

I'm gonna have to agree with you on that one. Unfortunately when shooting at events there's no mobility and a lot of factors aren't within your control, you're just a number to the cosplayers who have to entertain dozens of overzealous/creepy photographers. So I'm simply doing what makes me stand out from the rest.

A lot of photographers blow their hard earned coin on strobes, pavotubes, and lenses but don't use modifiers, situate their lights without any rhyme or reason, or even risk injury to themselves or others by using flimsy c-stands/not counter-weighing gobo arms. I try to point out the most glaring of mistakes but they come off as defensive or belligerent.

>Hope you're getting paid
You don't get paid at events. But the barrier of entry is cheaper than most folks think so I do it for fun.

I recently upgraded from APS-C to FF, and I still have the APS-C body. The relevant lenses I currently own are:
35mm f/1.4 EF
50mm f/1.8 EF
17-55mm f/2.8 EF-S

In the past, I used the 17-55mm the most for cons. For the next con I am attending in March, I would like to shoot with the new fancy FF body and also use the 35mm lens since it is quite nice. I considered putting the 35mm on the APS-C body for a 56mm equivalent, but then I am not sure how to utilize the FF body.
Putting the 50mm on the FF with the 35mm on the APS-C would be useless imo, and I'm concerned that the 35mm on the FF might be too wide portrait shots. One solution I am considering is getting a 28mm lens for the FF.
Any opinions on what you would do in this situation?
>>
>>4287825
Rock the 35mm/FF combo and just have fun. If you really like shooting portraiture, sell your 50mm and 17-55mm to save up for a 85mm. Both the f1.4 and f1.8 variants are excellent performers.
>>
>>4285325
>using histogram in 2024
you do realize cameras nowadays have exposure detection scales and write data into raw files that allow you to recover ten trillion stops up or down if your shot was overexposed or underexposed? not to mention shit like captureone or lightroom where you can even correct exposure only on specific parts of the image, not just the entire image.

I know these photos aren't yours, at best your employers and you were a pole holder, because the budget PER SHOOT is well above the price of a used car and almost all of these would have been impossible to do in a reasonable amount of time without assistants. The photography isn't even half the work here, 80% of the content is courtesy of costume designers, makeup artists, and set designers. The photographer is the single least important person in all of this, essentially the middle manager of lighting.

Nor would you be able to book these models without assistants and a lot of clout.

This is absolutely unattainable without studio employment and can not be reasonably presented as anything anyone could aspire to without moving to london and working a full time gig.

you're fookin blind cunt. those are extensively lit or just heavily photoshopped, typical walker/crewdson wannabe shoot (no idea why someone would want to have no taste but whatever, the world of non-art is insular and circlejerky)

>shitting on images from bella kotak, quite literally the best and most known fantasy/editorial photographer in the world
i love when nophoto retards on /p/ jump to conclusions and shit on images others posted, only to find out the images arent even from the person they are shitting on but from the best photographer in the field. you guys just shit on everything no matter what. whether its jealousy or projecting your own pathetic existence, doing that shit is the lowest of low, not even pathetic excuses of human beings on /a/ do this shit but hey... you can always count on /p/ and /fa/ to be the lowest of all lows

>The tasteless fantasyslop photographer with the largest budget in the world
Thank you for confirming they were not your photos

You probably don't even know the lighting setup used but I can guarantee you they composited those images
>>

they are shit tho, the digimaxxing is vomit inducing
>>

Apparently all the digislug frequency separation editing, digital compositing to create impossible light, and total aversion to hard light makes normies think its good

Please compare annie leibovitz circa 1990 to her today to see how good the photographers actually are beneath the inflating production budgets

Annie is a great call out actually, her portraits used to be simplistic but beautiful, you know, showcase the person and their features kind of thing, but her later work she leans a lot more into the overproduced “majestic theatre production” aesthetic or something. Not bad but certainly different. But let’s be real, you’re shooting pasty weebs in ugly cheap costumes on location with a guerilla setup and limited time, this thread probably shows the best you’ll get.

sometimes the costumes are cool tho.

But yeah I don't get how you guys carry so much stuff, just a flash with a small difuser seems like overkill for me but the venues that I go to are always so fucking packed.
