I think about this often since I grew up in Canada my longterm girlfriend in the US. Even though she's a relative exception certainly there's much more ignorance of the rest of the world in the US. Also while there are linguistic and cultural divides in Canada those in the US are far FAR larger. Obviously that makes sense superficially since there are many more people in the US, but there are just civilizational poles in the US that just don't exist in Canada at all or barely at all. Large difference in religiosity is party of it, but it also seems often like Canada and the "union" states have more in common than the "union" with the "confederacy" as that has extruded culturally in the last +100 years.

I would have agreed in the past about the similarities, I spent a lot of time in Southern Ontario/Michigan and Southern Alberta/Montana +1 decade ago, but Fox and Trump have created a cult in the US that just isn't in any way equivalent to the "elbows up" Canadian boomer meme. Literally MILLIONS of American boomers would DIE for Trump. They would happily throw their children into a fire for his glory. It's like something you'd read in dystopian fiction or the descent to nazism but at least 1/3 of the US seems to be legitimately beyond reach in a personality cult. In Canada it's enough to keep a loosing opposition leader in his post very precariously with absolutely no chance of taking power vs. the presidency.

US social and political dynamics are much more complex than ours, we used to have 2~3 blocks that mostly rose from ethnic backgrounds, with the main interaction being that we hated each other for no real reason. Boomers used to refer to it as the Two Great Loneliness, meaning that Canada was mostly just Anglos and Francos hating each other despite rarely ever living close to each other, and thus not really knowing anything about the other side. Now, modern immigration has made this a bit more complex, for sure, but only 20~30 years ago, that was essentially what Canada was. I feel it would be arrogant as fuck to try and reduce American social dynamics the same way, and the sheer scale of your happenings warp our understanding of it.
