1.6 - New Year Dash
1.11 - Battle In the Valley

>FAQs
! New Japan Pro-Wrestling does not feature a weekly TV show like WWE, AEW, and TNA, instead relying on the streaming service of NJPW World for their shows.
! NJPW's major shows all feature a clear schedule, and feature in the same buildings—Wrestle Kingdom occurs on January 4th at the Tokyo Dome, Sakura Genesis generally occurs in early April at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan, Wrestling Dontaku is mainly around May 1st - 4th at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, etc.
! NJPW Strong is the brand name for New Japan's American events. They carry their own belts, but the main NJPW belts can be defended in these shows as well.

People that watch old Japanese wrestling, do you just watch random matches or do you do specific time periods of promotions in chronological order?
>>
>>16653056
I brought the liger 30th anniversary dvd so I’ve been watching that recently
>>
>>16652917
>her hero is an eternal jobber
>>
>>16653056
Sometimes its a mood, like 90s junior heavyweights with el samurai and liger. Other times I want to watch angles unfold so I watch a few shows within a time period. Lots of the time its random shit eternally playing in the background
>>
>>16653056
I don't have the kind of interest in wrestling where I can plow through a whole load of matches that I'm not particularly interested in just do it "in order". I did try that a couple times and it quickly turned into feeling like doing homework
Specific time periods kind of happen naturally for most people though, I think. If some old match catches your interest for whatever reason, that leads you to seek out more matches like it. That's usually why I watch old stuff, anyway
>>
What are you New Year Dash expectations?

I'm guessing an Omega / Tanahashi team up to set up a match for Tana's retirement tour. Plays into the upcoming Omega / Okada angle too.
>>
>>16653056
Sometimes I just want to see a specific time period or event... but more often I try to follow a wrestlers' career. I'll pick somebody at random and watch matches from their Young Lion (or equivalent) era, then their midcard victories and star-making matches, then up to their champion era and into their grandpa years if applicable. It's fun to watch a wrestler grow and change, especially rewarding to see broad storylines play out over years.

Never has a man been truly more alive and locked in, than in this moment.
This is where he belongs.
>>
>>16653464
If it is where he belongs then why did he leave? Why does he only return for select dates? He is not a loyal player and his games are salty. They are lacking the sufficient emotions.

>>
>>16653056
This is something I've always liked doing, whether it's a feud or a whole era like the Monday Night Wars (big regrets there though). I'd love a guide on following the mid-late 90s period.
>>
>>16653474
Him leaving makes perfect sense, to try and create what they had going on Japan in the west.

Unfortunately, Tony had other plans. But from Omega's perspective, it was a noble experiment and to not have tried it would have been to always wonder if you could've done it.
>>
>>16653688
Then he never truly belonged if his goal was to make something else.
>>

Don't settle for the arigatou players, you need something more than that to truly be a player of importance in this company, indeed.

>>16653852
Call me a worked mark but I'll be shoot disappointed if he leaves New Japan even within the next 5 years. Like I get everyone else leaving and I'll even get it if ZSJ leaves but now with Gabe it's different. After last night and him coming out with the logo on his gear, he really is someone this company can and should rely on.

So who does Takeshita team with on the smaller shows before his big matches? Can't be UE anymore after Callis and Fletcher turned on Ospreay
>>
>>16654643
Goto beat him clean in the G1 and he showed respect to Ishii, so maybe he can team with CHAOS and be their default leader?
>>
>>16654564
They didn't turn Jay face and last night proved they should have. They could've done the same thing with him, or really any gaijin dojo boy.

Instead of a really slow burn NJPW face turn, we got a shitty half-assed AEW face turn in front of an audience that doesn't give that much of a shit about him and has no investment in his history
>>
Predictions for tonight's show? I figure a TMDK/Chaos tag match since there are two NB title matches confirmed already. Maybe ZSJ/Oiwa/Fujita/Eagles/Hartley vs. Goto/Yoshi/Ishii/YOH/Rocky?
>>
can someone explain new year dash to me as a concept?
>>
If i was booking, i'd give Goto the title at NB, Tana a title match at the anniversary event, Gabe the cup, Title back to Zack at Dominon, G1 to Shota or Tusji.
Naito vs the one who dosen't win the g1 at the dome.
>>
>>16654725
Annual mystery portal show with surprise fallout from Wrestle Kingdom. Depending on the year, they either announce the card at the top of the show or sometimes just have the audience figure it out when the entrance music hits for each match. It's been more fan service in recent years rather than a major show with one big event, but you never know. They've had unit formations/expulsions/returns many times, and at worst you'll just get a cool tag match with super teams.

Yeah, the only match we know is on the card is Oleg and Josh Barnett since he asked for the match after the rambo
>>
>>16654767
Last year the "surprises" were:
>TV title match (just Tanahashi vs. Taguchi)
>Riddle debut promo video challenging Tanahashi
>Oskar and Nakashima farewell match
>main event team of Danielson/Moxley/Okada/Ishii (which actually lost to TMDK)
>>

It really feel like they don't know what to do with him. He was getting "babyface in peril" treatment through most of the Zack match, even after he pushed Red Shoes. Now he's valiantly taking on Mox and his evil gang of fags. Very bizarre. Feels like AEW Cody in a way
>>
>>16655203
Yeah there were times during that Zack match where I really was just wondering what the hell is going on with him, such a weird vibe. The crowd booing really just twisted the perception of what they were doing around, like a schizophrenic blender of face and heel dynamics.
>>
>>16654399
>Call me a worked mark but I'll be shoot disappointed if he leaves New Japan
The match with Kenny was his AEW try out. He's following the exact same path as Ospreay did
>Get booked on Forbidden Door (eg Tony has noticed you)
>Do a "I'm the Gaijin defender of NJPW" gimmick to get over with the Japs (and get more of Tony's attention)
>Have a bangerino with Kenny at the Dome
>Have an inferior rematch with Kenny at Forbidden Door (for Tony)
>Sign with AEW
>Have AEWtists saying "why isn't NJPW putting the IWGP Heavyweight title on Gabe"
It's disappointing, but it is what it is

Inoki is still the founder of New Japan, he was the Ace and the Icon for the brand for the better part of 2 decades. You could (correctly) argue that he's responsible for nearly killing the company but it is an indisputable fact that the company wouldn't exist without him. They venerate the man as their founder, not as the confused old man that embezzled money in some misguided scheme to farm whatever bullshit in Brazil or the guy that tarnished an entire generation of his own workers by forcing them into shoot matches that he never would have had the balls to compete in when he was active.
>>
>>16656755

KOPW 2024: 6201. Up from 5002 in 2023

Power struggle 2024: 3773. Down from 4046
Wrestlekingdom 19: 24107. Down from 27422
New year dash: 2348, down from 2910.
Damn, I thought people said ZSJ's bangers would carry the company.
>>
>>16656912
It's not just Kenny. Every worker goes to Japan and works their ass off, then go home and kick it into idle for a few months.

God-tier iron men go to the states and become aimless bums. It's been common since the 70's when guys like Stan Hansen and The Funks would have good to great showings in America and then have classics in Japan. Flair has said repeatedly in interviews that the boys always knew the expectations were higher in Japan and that the local wrestlers would lay into you a little bit more. Vader, The Steiners, Sting, Rude, Hogan, Savage, DiBiase, etc. They always took it to the next level when they went to Japan. Styles treated NJPW as his chance to prove he was better than anyone had ever said he was, and prove that he could be a global star. Nakamura retired to WWE. Okada, Ospreay, Omega are all relaxing in AEW... Ospreay is reverting to his indyriffic flippy nonsense style as well.

Why bother when you're getting paid big bucks to wrestle at half speed in front of narcissistic fans that would rather try to get an obnoxious chant over than watch the wrestling?
>>
>>16657006
good point. i really should watch more prime inoki stuff.
>>
>>16657006
But they should know that we, the western NJPW community, we all hate Inoki. He might be a Japanese icon to the Japanese nation or whatever, but NJPW is a global organization now so they should take our sensibilities into consideration. Every time they bring up Inoki, I cringe to my core.
>>
>>16657069
>narcissistic fans that would rather try to get an obnoxious chant over than watch the wrestling
That's really the key. Western fans enjoy ironically but Japanese fans are much more willing to genuinely invest themselves in the performances.
>>
>>16657009
ZSJ needs decent opponents. He's good, maybe even great, but he's not on the level of a Bret Hart or HBK where they can lead a jobber to an excellent match.

ZSJ doesn't have a lot to work with right now. Just look at the opponents they've given him:
>Naito (Cagematch: 8.2)
a broken down old man, and ZSJ got a better match out of him than Hiromu.
>SANADA (Cagematch: 7.2)
A star that didn't pan out and was already on a long downswing when they gave him a pity shot on a UK show.
>Shingo (Cagematch: 8.7)
Solid opponent even though he is clearly not seen as a top contender by creative anymore. He is still a reliable hand and will rise to the occasion. These two have a history of great matches, and this was no different.
>Umino (Cagematch: 6.6)
A 40+ minute forced epic with a rookie that hasn't nearly proven himself or justified his push. Umino literally forgot to sell a submission... nobody can get a star performance from this kid yet.
>Ricochet (Cagematch: 8.0)
Garbage indy shitter... and ZSJ still managed to drag him to a good match.

ZSJ had a rather poor crop of talent to work with and a completely barren undercard as well. He can't carry the company with one-match cards.

I was responding to a comment that essentially stated, "ZSJ's bangers were supposed to the carry the company but attendance is proving otherwise."

I agree it's more complex than just the champion and his opponents. The lack of veteran talent, injuries, rushed younger talent, and a continued reliance on an overseas market that won't materialize are all leading to lower gates.

Yuya Uemura when he returns from injury... and assuming they strap a rocket to him.

I didn't mind Hiromu when he was a near suicidal junior anarchist. I stopped liking him when he came back from that neck injury and wrestled at half the speed and intensity compared to his pre-injury career. I didn't start to actively hate him until he became the Cringe King that thinks he can compete with heavyweights.

Most juniors should stay in the junior division. Unless you are prepared to seriously bulk up and add a variety of convincing offense to your repertoire.

Tiger Mask could have done it, but he didn't need to when he left to form UWF. Similar case for Otani leaving for Zero1. Liger could have done it at one point but he knew he didn't need to. He was already doing what he wanted in his division. Omega and Ospreay bulked up and changed their offense.

All I've seen from Hiromu post-injury is timidness and goofball antics that would be better suited to DDT.

>>
>>16657918
Agreed. It's not a situation where one guy is going to carry the whole company. They need to shift focus from overseas muddled ambitions to pushing the talent they have.

Yuya and Oiwa need to be booked strong. Shingo, SANADA need to be treated like bigger stars, the stop/start intermittent booking has killed their momentum.

ZSJ needs some strong contenders, and give Suzuki the match they've been teasing already! He's over the hill but a passing of the torch storyline at least adds some drama.

Tsuji needs to work on his cardio and switch up the moveset. Umino needs... to be better... a lot better. Narita needs a new gimmick. Evil needs to go away. Goto pity run is now or never, preferably never. Tanahashi swan song needs to be played to perfection, they can't afford to fuck this up. Bring in Nakamura for a match.

Bring in every big name junior for a grand slam BOSJ tournament. NOAH, CMLL, AJPW, BJW, DragonGate, Tenryu Project, etc. Bury whatever pride you have and get these guys in the door for a lights out balls-to-the-wall tournament.

Same with G1. Fuck AEW, only exceptions being Bryan if he's up for it or Okada if he agrees to lose every match. Takeshita is under contract now, nobody else from AEW is worth it. Otherwise fuck off. NOAH, CMLL, AJPW, DragonGate, BJW, etc. All stars, no more up and coming dipshits. Yuya wins after a monster run.
>>
>>16658168
I like Sanada but it's a fact that he was on a downward swing after he lost the title. NJPW had been doing nothing with him until the title match with ZSJ, he had zero momentum. It was a throwaway match in the UK, bookers hadn't given it any thought or gravitas.

It still ended up being decent.

Cagematch ratings aren't great but it's the only consensus opinion available. Meltzer is senile. It's the only real measurement available...
>>
I think NJPW will die in 2 or 3 years. None of the new guys can draw a dime or have any significant amount of charisma, the main event formula is tired and old and Trannyhashi sucks Tonikan's cock way too much and we've seen many times that this partnership hurts them a lot. It's the end.

I'll say this as a fan of AJPW and NOAH... how much worse could NJPW treat them?

Is Shotaro Ashino well booked in AJPW? Won the Champion Carnival, derailed with injury then returned... and was steamrolled by Nakajima. Yuki Honda is looking good right? Right? With all those nothings he's won?

Have Kenoh or Kiyomiya been given the chance to shine with an extended title reigns or were they chopped at the knees? Soya and Kitamura continue to do nothing.

Do we still need to protect Miyahara? He's lost the last 5 Triple Crown matches he's been in. It's safe to say a win over Miyahara in 2025 is a win over Jericho in WWE circa 2017.

Wheelchairto's numbers as champion:

New beginning inn Sapporo: 5355. Up from 3316. If we compare against the previous year's title match in Osaka, up from 4035.
Anniversary show: 3008. Up from 2020.
Sakura Genesis: 6632. Up from 6510.
Destruction in Kobe: 4528. Up from 4212
KOPW 2024: 6201. Up from 5002 in 2023

It's not like Naito himself had star opponents. He had a rematch against SANADA, a main event against freaking SHO, Tsuji and Great O'Khan. Didn't include his main event against Moxley but that also drew a great number.

I saw someone on >reddit comparing how many matches each company's wrestlers had in 2024, and Naito was only 2 matches behind BUSHI. If he had wrestled 3 undercard tags on that SJTL tour where he just walked out to watch BUSHI/Hiromu he would be a clear #1 across basically every promotion which is absolutely insane given his spot on the card. Probably telling for why he's regressed as fast as he has, even his match with Okada in the G1 finals wasn't as grim as the Hiromu one.
>>
Unironically how do we save New Japan Pro Wrestling, lads?

kek I just randomly remembered how they forced their Shotetty down the fans' throat at WK17. Teaming with Tanahashi and Muto, it was Muto's final match in NJPW and he did the shining wizard to BUSHI and then Shota just added his shitty death rider and stole the pin like he was supposed to be on Tanahashi and Muto's level. You could already feel that the crowd didn't care about him. Truly a pink android bitch ass geek.

Don’t know if this will help, but if you have an iPhone and either an Apple TV or a tv that allows casting you can airplay to the TV and it plays in 1080p. That’s how I watch NJPW, and before I realized I could do that it was dark days of hooking up my computer to the tv.
>>
>>16659559
Uemura and Oiwa just need pushes.
Tsuji needs cardio.
Narita needs a gimmick overhaul.
SANADA issues can be fixed potentially.
ZSJ is fine, he's earned his spot just needs a good blood feud. Maybe Suzuki in a passing of the torch feud?

Most of their problems can be solved with better booking, and maybe a little more time in the dojo/overseas for the younger guys. AEW partnership sucks but it gives then cash that can be used to keep the finances up.
>>
>>16659394
Problem is, polite applause is still more than what a lot of the current guys get. It's also telling of the terrible booking NJPW had in 2024. The narrative being spun is that NJPW's terrible numbers are expected because itr's a "rebuilding period" but they were on track to draw a shit load more in 2024 until Tana's love for westerners fucked it up.
Wasting time on Riddle and Ziggler, that awful Moxley run when Naito's last run should have been a big deal to put the next guy over are just two instances.
Tana did save NJPW from the dark ages but it's clear he doesn't have the head for business.

Here is the drawing power hierarchy right now.

-Proven draw: Tetsuya Naito (wheelchair version)

-Is slightly a draw: Hiromu Takahashi, Hirooki Goto, Hiroshi Tanahashi (tranny lover on his last knees version).

-Doesn't make a difference but has a very slight chance to draw a dime once in a while: Yota Tsuji, EVIL, El Desperado, Taichi.

Proven anti-draws: Zack Sabre Jr., David Finlay, Shingo Bangerino.

The rest of the roster is just not drawing a dime.
>>
>>16659616
They did surprisingly good business this year, though. Down a bit but that's understandable and not just due to 'rebuilding' but also because the Japanese economy is absolutely in the shitter.
>>
>>16659627
Only in the absurd headcanon of a /njpw/ poster could someone claim Taichi is more of a draw than Shingo in 2024, not to mention ZSJ. How much did Taichi's Tokyo Dome main event draw?
>>
>>16659631
Their product has been awful, which doesn't help.
>>
>>16659648
Taichi can draw a dime in his hometown of Sapporo. Shingo was booked in his hometown against Yuya last year and he managed to draw less than the previous year. An IWGP World title shot for Taichi would draw more than Shingo getting one, look at how poorly they did in fucking Osaka with Zakku.
>>
>>16659631/
You must mean 2024? Yeah, they were doing good business in 2024 at the start and even with Okada and Ospreay bolting, could have kept up a good momentum with interesting stories and letting Naito's title reign mean something.
Instead, the global title after Finlay won it was hotshotted onto Ziggler for no real reason other than Tana loves ex-wwe guys, Riddle was whatever.
Then we had the terrible Moxley run that wasted everyone's time, halted Naito's momentum as champion and ultimately benefited no one.

Business wise, yeah, it wasn't bad but it could have both been great and led to some interesting things storyline wise instead of what we got which was a cold tokyo dome main event.
>>
>>16659692
I don't disagree. It really feels like that Moxley reign was out of nowhere and just threw all of their plans off.

They really need to stop being such fucking cucks but I guess NJPW must really need the fucking money to bend the knee so much.
>>
>>16659692
>we had the terrible Moxley run that wasted everyone's time
I'm still completely baffled by this, especially when Shota ended up main eventing the dome. I'm starting to think Tony fucked up some plans by having Mox win the AEW World Title and stay on AEW. He's so key to Shota's story
>>
>>16659822
The lack of interaction between Moxley and Shota during these Tokyo Dome shows is baffling.

That cat is already out of the bag, anon. I would rather Moxley have never been involved in NJPW in the first place but now he is irrevocably tied to Shota's character and the guy is floundering horribly.

I also don't think Moxley should've been champ, obviously, but he was. So, for him to just not show up to Wrestle Kingdom or Dynasty because he'd rather torture a couple of 70 year old wrestlers on Collision is just fucking weird. It makes it seem like there's a conflict, some dispute, like Moxley is pissed about something, or maybe AEW is mad about something, I don't know.

Dynasty felt off, the whole thing -- how poorly it was promoted, the card itself, everything about it feels like there is some kind of discontent between NJPW and AEW, like they can't agree on things anymore.

Just the entire idea that AEW's top wrestlers wouldn't even bother to show up at a Tokyo Dome show, that they wouldn't WANT to be there and fight to be on a prestigious card -- that itself hurt the show.

That is how you have to promote a Tokyo Dome crossover show.
Why are they so fucking stupid, bros?
