How come I can choose whether to browse 4chan by https, or without?

I mean, why isn't 4chan always https? Why are you able to remove https from the adress bar (and browse 4chan without it?

I notice that the custom board list and other settings are different depending on this!

Why??

So that /g/ can post from their retro and alternative browser devices that don't support Cloudflare's SSL configuration (interestingly IE6 and late Netscape still work with 4chan and 8ch if you turn on TLS 1.0, due to legacy protocol support and dedicated IP addresses).
Also they're giving a fuck about the GDPR.

That's because cookies have a "secure" flag that restricts whether they are available on the HTTPS variant of the site only, and localStorage is different for any combination of protocol + domain name too.
