I think Hikikomoris are a peek into the future of society all over the world. And some of you are already proof of it.

It's the inevitable outcome of stagflation. Nothing improves on the worker side of things but inflation keeps green line going up eventually pricing most people out of hope. In Japan you are either salary man utterly dedicated to 80 hour work weeks with no hope of a family or home ownership or anything resembling work life balance or you're a hikki. We've seen it in the west in the wake of the housing bubble. It desperately needs to pop and stay popped but it's something our billionaire overlords won't allow the government to let happen. So we're slowly being priced out of hobbies and pastimes and child rearing and home ownership and relationships, being left with trade jobs that demand 50+ hour work weeks or pathetic service jobs and warehouse jobs. It's really suicidal from the corpos but they never really had a reputation for real long term planning.

I don't think it's just he economy, it's also a measure of development. When you have everything handed to you by modern society, you have no reason to go beyond your zone of comfort, and it can be a safer alternative mentally compared to venturing beyond. Eventually through repetition, you learn "Why do I need to get a job and have a social life when it's so hard and I can just stay in my room and never have to work?"

I don't agree, humans are't rats and you can't apply the same rat utopia logic to us because we have conscious self determination and can set goals and have ambitions outside of meeting basic needs. The economy has a much bigger impact on the individual than the individual gives it credit for - and you can see this in every nearly vacant bar & grill at 6pm and the music shops with instruments gathering dust and the abandoned bowling alleys and every shifty look of suspicion from strangers that live on your own street or in your own apartment building. The obtainable has become unobtainable forcing individuals to find entertainment in cheaper and simpler things making them look increasingly more juvenile

Indeed. All the 'real' jobs have gone to Red Chinese slaves and there is nothing left for autists, so we NEET by default.
We desperately need a fucking UBI, so we can at least hermit in peace.
