There are a lot more factors that play into whether or not a friendship can blossom between two adults, anon. It is definitely difficult for the reasons you already mentioned but if you find a likeminded person with the same hobbies as you, you usually gravitate towards them seemlessly anyway. That is, if they are also open to a friendship with you, which they tend to be if you are into the same shit and aren't an asshole.
Also trust is not something that can only develop in childhood. To be trustworthy and make people open up to you are skills that you can develop. It's not nearly as doom and gloom as you think.
