Onosato has this basho rolled up and smoked. Only question is how long it takes him to become Yokozuna and how hard Asashoryu seethes over it.

He'll win his debut ozeki basho in November, then Teru will show up in January and zensho, including not only dumpstering Onosato but injuring him in the process, denying Onosato yokozuna and crippling any chances of it happening in the future. Teru will retire immediately after.

Longevity is the biggest reason why Hakuho looked so good. There was only 8 years between Asashoryu's 1st yusho and his 25th, making for about 3 yushos per year. Hakuho won 45 from 2006 to 2021, making for about 3 yushos per year too. So why does everyone ride Hakuho's dick when Asashoryu won just as frequently?
>>
Keisho's young retirement age means his tenure as an elder is going to be extraordinarily long.
>>
>>144553217
Also to add to this, the much applauded Kaio won 5 yusho in 4 years, then nothing for the last 7 years of his grand sumo career. Takakeisho won 4 yusho in 4 years and had a much shorter career, which IN MY DESU makes the hamster look like the better rikishi. People give too much credit to rikishi that have better longevity but worse average records.

If I have this right:
Onosato can't yuusho earlier than Day 15. It's still possible for him to lose if he loses both today and tomorrow, and any of the followers wins both days, which would become a playoff. Do I have that right?

Apparently he got injured early in the basho (something to do with an ear) but kept going until he had to bow out for a couple of days and now he's back.

He looked really good early on; on day 8 he was 6-2 but then had a loss to papayasu and withdrew for two days before coming back today.

It's virtually the exact same set of guys that Kotozakura and Onosato had to face though.

Top dawgs when Koto was komosubi and sekiwake:

Terunofuji (mostly absent with the occasional winning yusho)
Takakeisho (spiraling)
Kirishima (injured and bad or uninjured and good)
Hoshoryu (ozeki)

Top dawgs when Onosato was komosubi and sekiwake:

Terunofuji (mostly absent with the occasional winning yusho)
Takakeisho (spiraling)
Kirishima (injured and bad or uninjured and good)
Hoshoryu (ozeki)
>>
I'm going to opening day of the haru basho, it now dawns on me I could potentially see Onosato's maiden yokozuna dohyo-iri, horry shittu...

No anon you don't understand, Hoshoryu is 3-0 v Onosato, Onosato is just gonna get thrown at the tachiai.

Not in the early years you had
The ghost of hakuho
Prime terunofuji

Hoshoryu
Hot wkmh
Prime mita
And the log jam of 2022 that hoshoryu wtk and kiri caused with their constant 9-6s played a huge factor. If koto and hosh had the absolute cakewalk of a division that is the top they would be in way better shape than they are now.

Koto has never fought Hakuho. In the entire time that they were both in makuuchi together, there was only 1 (one) basho where Hakuho competed the full 15 days. It was his final basho where he zensho'd.

>Prime terunofuji
The only plausible one on the list.

>Not so injured takakeisho
Had already been kadoban multiple times when Koto first entered makuuchi.

>Pre injury kirishima
Koto nuthuggers were saying Kirishima was worse than him, now they desperately try to hype him up as a worthy opponent.

>Hoshoryu
Objectively shittier versions of Hoshoryu than the ones Onosato fought.

>Hot wkmh
I like WKMH but this is scraping the bottom of the barrel here.

>Prime mita
Mita had gained and lost ozeki before Koto even made komosubi. Koto also has an 8-3 lead in their matchup, so not exactly a hard opponent for him.

I haven't been watching sumo for a long time so correct me if I'm wrong.

Being held out of sanyaku for longer is a buff if anything because you face weaker opponents, making it easier to yusho. For all the hype Takerufuji gets over his debut yusho, look at how weak his opponents were due to him being M17. Until day 9 his highest ranked opponent was fucking M12. HIS YUSHO WIN HAD A FUCKING JURYO OPPONENT.

Kotozakura has no excuses for his lack of yusho, and Onosato deserves mountains of credit for remaining consistent as his average opponent's rank has risen.
>>
>>144563727
My hottest sumo take is that they should expand juryo by rolling everyone below M10 into it. The gulf between sanyaku and M17 is far bigger than the gap between M17 and J14, both in terms of absolute numbers and skill.

Shonannoumi seems to be the classic big lumbering oaf. If you just see a picture of him and look at his height & weight stats it seems like he should be a major force, but his hand speed is terrible. However he is still fairly young and might end up developing into more of a top tier competitor.

They can start with a sideways gyoji?
>>
>>144566432
I've heard they can start literally whenever they want if they're both ready and the gyoji is more of a formality to make sure they go. Apparently the last fight it happened in involved Hakuho which sounds about right.

Fun fact, rikishi around the dohyo can call a monoii, it just never happens. Apart from one time when Hakuho did it, because who the fuck else?
>>
>>144563544
His tachiai is pretty meh yeah, a lot of just extending hands into opponents shoulders, rarely mixes it up by going for maemitsu right away or something, seemingly unwilling to clash heads and drive. He's going to have a very cool highlight reel when it's all said and done but he needs more than just backfoot throws if he's going to get yokozuna. He's still improving I have faith

Takerufuji's yusho is probably the worst yusho on record. It's an unironically big flaw in the way the system works that the lower ranked a rikishi is in a division, the easier their opponents will be, and yet those wins are equal in weight to someone who has to go through the entire sanyaku. The guy was M17, it literally does not get any easier.
>>
>>144573787
If a lower ranked maegashira is in contention, they throw sanyaku at them towards the end. The sanyaku fight lower ranked rikishi the first week so they can't use schedule as an excuse. It's entirely their fault for choking if they lose.

>It's an unironically big flaw
If it's such a big flaw, then Takerufuji wouldn't have been the first in a century to do it.
>>
>>144573985
Maybe Takerufuji was just smart enough to realise that landing as low in makuuchi as possible gave him an unfair advantage. Wouldn't be surprised if he does it again and he threw against Kayo so he could creep over the makuuchi line.

I don't think that's really fair, though. You can't accuse the wrestlers of dodging certain opponents. They have to fight whom they're told to. It's not like they have a choice.

Those fluky yushos are usually the result of some bad luck on the part of the bookers.

If I told you to run a mile in 8 minutes and, when you did it, I'd say, "OK, but it would have been more impressive if you'd run it in 6 minutes," You'd, rightfully respond, "Then why didn't you ask me to run a mile in 6?!"

If Churanoumi does it, it will be his 2nd consecutive basho with 10 wins & he got nothing last time. Of course Churanoumi didn't beat two pathetically weak ozekis, so that might make a difference in Ura's favor, he'd probably be up for outstanding performance in that case.

Reminder that Keisho henka'd Atamifuji in a yusho playoff a year ago today and that his career subsequently came to a screeching halt, collapsed and ended as a result of the bad mojo he earned with the henka.

The sumo gods hate Takakeisho.

Well it's happening again, Takerufuji is intentionally getting himself seeded as low as possible in makuuchi so he can yusho off beating juryo shitters against.

He threw because Takakeisho announced his retirement mid-basho and opened a slot.

>>
>>144588752
Use them all interchangeably and revel that finally you're not the one on the receiving end of secondary users butchering a language.
>>
>>144588752
Specifically in names/shikona, I like the kanji > katakana > hiragana (that's #3, #2, and #1). I like the kanji because the others look weird in a name with more kanji. Japanese names are usually all kanji or all kana, not mixed AFAIK. So names like Asanoyama look the best to me. If has to be kana, then the katakana version looks cute to me. One example is Terunofuji. The cute "no" is sandwiched between imposing kanji. My least favorite is the hiragana no. An example is Takanosho. It doesn't look as refined as the kanji, and it doesn't look cute like the katakana. It's just there. I don't like it.

The sheer terror of being surpassed by Aonishiki will give him super powers, his legs will not bend and his strength will multiply. He will injure Roga, Takayasu and Hokutofuji, earning the hatred of many fans. The birth of his bastard son with his mommy wife will only worsen his reputation. Hakuho will affirm in an interview that the future of sumo is Shishi (as he already did with Kirishima), ruining the rest of his career.

Only just got back from work and finished watching today's bouts. Some fun stuff in there, first and foremost Abi making Onosato look like a fool. They showed Onosato ringside after it and you could SEE the gears turning in his head processing what just went on. He straight up made Onosato look bad. If Onosato thought his future of pushing people around was going to be easy Abi just gave him something to think about.

The final bout was neat. Did you catch just how close Hoshoryu came to dumping Zak on the ground the same way he did it to Kirishima?
