You can play with the weights or use some other form of advanced stats that account for game control, but they all tend to be very highly correlated. Note that Sagarin and FPI and other systems of that ilk are power ratings that are meant to be predictive rather than a strict assessment of previous performance. From what I'm seeing, much of the incredulity around the committee's and popular polls' rnankings are really just ill-conceived seething. For close teams, you can certainly make arguments about head-to-head or some marquee win overriding the numeric output, but that defeats the purpose of an open source computer poll in the first place.
