Enter the Fat Dragon 1978 is pretty good and I feel like most of the stuff that Sammo Hung has done is at least in part a comedy so you really can't go wrong with him. There's also stuff like the Pom Pom series and all the different Mr. Vampire movies.

Someone dropped this in the thread without putting an image to it or drawing any attention to it. It's the actual HD version of Hard Boiled taken from the Japanese Blu-Ray. Brand new English subtitles, plus the original mono audio, plus extras and it's an actual HD transfer from either the negative or a film print and not a shitty dvd upscale. I feel like it needs more attention drawn to it since it's the best version of HB floating around on the net.

Chinese Ghost Story. There's three of these. All good.
Chinese Odyssey. Two were made right after each other, then a third came out many years later with a different cast. Because of this the third is seen as not as good (it isn't) but in so far as a more modern Wuxia tao comedy romances goes it's not bad at all.

As if that wasn't bad enough, barely anybody labels what version of a film is in a torrent and to cap it off they don't list how long they are either. A lot of their stars have retired, basically fucked off (to China or the US) or are just plain old/uninsurable now. By the time someone like Maggie Cheung tried to "give back" to that industry by guest appearing in Hot Summer Days the scene was really not what it was.

The most recent thing I've seen from Jackie Chan is Skiptrace, and it very clearly has mainland influence. Stuff he's been producing since the late 2000s has obvious mainland influence and as a result has felt a little sterile or "safe". He's pretty much sold out at this point (not that he has much choice unless he wants to retire).
As for films not being distributed, it might be the case that it's a distribution/advertising problem, but I've seen plenty of mainland films that have come out after 1997.
I think it's a combination of the old talent fizzling out and more control from the mainland.

Stuff like this doesn't really bother me because pretty much all countries inject propaganda into their media and art. It's a shame HK has less autonomy in their films but Asian cinema still has SK, Japan and the best Chinese films to make up for it. Also, Indonesia has made some really fucking good films in the last 10-15 years.

Don't get me wrong, I've enjoy me some mainland movies, even the Jackie Chan ones (Little Big Soldier comes to mind), but the propaganda and creative control aspect is clearly there. I think that stifles a lot of what made Hong Kong cinema good. All I'm saying is that the scene isn't the same as it was in the 80s and 90s.

The shitty "remaster" has decent picture quality but has the absolutely godawful audio track with dubbed-in sound effects that drown out the original contemporary audio. It contrasts terribly with the original audio trying to bleed through but is constantly drowned out.

What this poster posted is from a Blu-Ray source that has the original audio track. Many "remastered" Chinese/Hong Kong films have an edited audio track, where the dialog is left untouched and additional sound effects are dropped in on top of the original ones which sound terrible during playback. Finding high quality sources without the fucked-up audio tracks has been a challenge. Reputable sources are of course The Criterion Collection, Hong Kong Rescue and some others.
