>>1097737A lot of 4K "remasters" also have an absurd amount of grain. Way more than the film negative should have ever had. I was pretty pissed getting the 4K copies of the Godfather movies only find out that the 1080p versions actually look better upscaled because of the bullshit grain.

>>1097737grain = SOVLwhat else are you gonna use those 100mbps bitrate for
For the "bad dump" and yes its a bit of porn, but mostly games and software, I used Seagate Ironwolf drives. For the "good dump" I used 16/18TB WD red Pros. I run all these on two synology nas's
I lost a storage drive a couple years back and have looked towards a NAS setup since.
Sorting by size, heres an example of the largest movie files on the nas.
>>1097836where's the ninth gate kino?
>>1097941it depends on what you do with itremember that RAID is not a backup solution, all your data depends on the availability of all your drives and lose a drive too many or issues during reconstruction and all your data is gonesnapraid (or unraid if your a payfag) is a much more sensible solution as it handles parity differently, but you lose the speed of classical RAID but sure, probably a nas would be more reliable than external drives or most alternatives (aprat from building one yourself)
>>1097836do you actually watch these in a home theater or do you just like collecting?I like collecting them but I'd rather have 1000 movies at ~10gb a pop than 200 at 50gb

>>1097688Here's what's plugged in on mine right now. Also have about 20TB of anime, 8TB of music, and 10ish of other random shit on other drives not plugged in at the moment. Also offline backups of the important shit (the things that can't be easily replaced from a tracker). Download the shit you want to consume/use again. It could be gone from the internet forever tomorrow.

>>1097688>doomsday>highest quality Regardless of available storage size, going for "good enough" quality will always allow you to have more of everything in a doomsday scenario. If the content I like comes in a retarded bitrate I make a point of it to transcode it with more aggressive compression.
The only software I use is the synology nas built in software. However, I did take the time to lock it down and jazz. I don't host this online or anything, its just for my household
And yea, like someone previously said. The SHR raid setup i use (its a synology thing) only has one backup drive to take over if one fails. Both NAS's are set to shut down if anything goes wrong with a drive. I then have to swap out that drive before another fails or I could potentially lose data.
I should also add I have never lost a drive. I do have a couple of spares sitting in a cabinet in the event something happens. I also keep both NAS's hooked up to their own UPS
>>1098371I have a DS418 and a DS1621+. The DS418 was purely me getting into the NAS world. The DS1621+ allowed more memory and SSD caching, however, I never utilized the caching.
>>1097993Oh yea, I have dual LG CX OLED, these are the newest models with the 120hz true output on 4k. I have dual desktops with 30 series cards driving them also. 5.1 system as well.
>>1097993I would also say im a collector. As for the size, I painfully review and download multiple versions of every movie, I try and identify what looks best compared to what sounds best... etc. I have a lot of free time.
Another neat bit, you can run roms and iso's off a nas, so if you're like me and enjoy ELECTRONIC VIDEO GAMES then you too can have a mame setup that just uses the nas as its storage.
>>1098239not him, but if you shucc them, it's the same as buying internal drives, though you might have to put tape on the pins to get them to work. it's reliable enough, though no matter what your setup, you should always back up things that can't be replaced. also, remember that RAID is not a backup.
>>1098239I'm using these for storage and only connect to my PC when I want to write/read data. It can be inconvenient if you want to have quick and easy access 24/7 to your collection comparing to a NAS setup. When plugged in to your PC and unused they will go to sleep in 30 min or so but apparently it's possible to turn this off in WD software. Using them like this is fine for me because I have movies/anime etc that I'm currently watching on a Samsung T5 so I rarely need them plugged.
You can hibernate the nas's also. Mine are set to sleep after 15 minutes of non-use. They take a moment to spin back up upon accessing the data. Some issues I saw with Plex when I ran it was that the drives would never sleep, even during non-use.
>>1098392to be fair in a doomsday your copy probably can be the last one available in the world of something, so the better the quality more chances to it last a long time. I still remember the Rm-Rmvb 10X compression days.

how useable are NAS systems (ex. Synology)? is it as simple as buy a system, plug in your HDDs, and it all just works as a separate file system that you access through the network?i have a bunch of 8 TB hard drives that im managing separately, wondering if i should look into NAS to make things easier
>>1104830>is it as simple as buy a system, plug in your HDDs, and it all just works as a separate file system that you access through the network?Pretty much yes. You have to define a shared folder in the web UI and optionally enable the guest user (disabled by default) if you don't want to password protect the share.Note that existing data on the drives will be lost. It's best to buy new drives for the NAS, copy the files over from the old disks (the NAS has a USB port and sometimes even e-sata) and then store the old ones somewhere as a last-resort backup.
>>1104832bit of a bummer that existing data is wiped, guess I'll have to buy the whole setup new then... in the long run though, i'm guessing it's worth itany other brands beside synology i should look into?

>>1097941It all comes down to:1. quality of hard drives2. quality of NAS itselfI got a 4-bay QNAP NAS w/ good hard drives probably about 10 years ago now. The hard drives have outlasted the NAS. About 4 years ago, the NAS MB died and I was able to arrange a replacement MB and got it back up and running. I backup to AWS now though.NAS is not a backup solution. It just provides convenience to store and load files on the network w/o thumbdrives, etc...
>>1109595Using desktop drives in a raid is a sure way of wearing them out fast
>>1115542NAS absolutely can be a backup solution. If you're backing up to the NAS, it's a backup solution. Very simple.
>>1115784How exactly? RAID shares/distributes requests between disks. If nothing reads/writes to the disk, there is almost zero additional operations, and the regular torrenting is no different than torrenting on a single drive. The important difference between consumer and “professional” drives is error recovery timeout. If there's an error on reading/writing some sector, the drive can try to fix it internally, re-read or remap the data, and it can spend a lot of time on that. IIRC, standards allow up to 8 seconds, because they came from the '80s, and the agreeable responsiveness of a personal computer could be much lower then. If you were OK with the program being blocked for some seconds when saving 100 KB file to a floppy, you were OK with the hard disk figuring it out for some time. The spin-up and seek times were also not as tiny as we expect them now. However, you don't want all that to happen if you have error recovery on the higher level, like a RAID, volume mirroring, or some other fault-tolerant storage scheme. In this case, disks should just report the errors as fast as they detect it, so that the data from the good copy can be used in response, and possibly in background overwrite/remap of a bad copy. One request hanging for some time or getting timeout because of the disk error is probably not an issue, but if you are unlucky, the whole server application/system might hang for seconds, and even repeatedly. For some systems, the possibility of hanging for seconds is as bad as a bomb explosion in the data center. So that's why you have “RAID disks” with small timeouts, but there is not much difference in their wear given the same usage.Various “green drives” (not WD Green specifically) with varying speeds, nonsensical “energy efficient” auto spin-downs and head parking, and mismatching insides under the single brand/series can also pose unexpected problems for RAID controllers, as those like disks to behave as similarly as possible.

>>1114982>doesn't data degrade and corrupt on drives overtime when it is stored without electricity like that in your pic?Not that guy, but I do keep a set of archive hard drives unpowered on the shelf. It's easy if you have hard drive docks installed in a full tower case. Three drive docks fit in the space of two 5.25 inch drive spaces.About every year or so, I copy the data to another drive and then reverify the data. The previous drive then gets wiped and becomes available to be the target drive for a different drive also being copied. By recopying the data, I refresh the magnetic bits which can weaken over time.I'm aware DiskFresh exists. I don't use that DiskFresh utility to read and re-write files on the same drive.http://www.puransoftware.com/DiskFresh.htmlhttps://www.howtogeek.com/660727/bit-rot-how-hard-drives-and-ssds-die-over-time/
>>1118399>You using one of those USB SATA bays (pic related)? Not that guy, but I use external drive docks too. Their advantage is that they allow the drive to be removed easily and put back on the shelf when done.PICREL is the Kingwin KF-3001 hard drive bay. It fits three hard drives into the space of two 5.25 inch drive bays. So even if you don't intend to swap drives in and out of the case, it will allow you to fit three drives into the space of two.

>>1142089i have a Synology 718+ & 1019+ the fans that come with the nas are really good my drives stay below 115f (my hot drive) & below 100f (normal drives) in low fan mode. both are WD red
>>1126609they connect via usb 3.1 or esata both faster than most hdds by default.
>be broke >tb hdds on ebay for like 15$ >can just buy a sata for usb cable for like 5$has anyone done this?
>>1097688Lemme upgrade my desktop first anon. Got a shitload of 320gb Seagate Pipelines sitting here doing nothing that I can add to the spare bays. Gonna have to make do with them cause I already got way over 8tb of vidya on three other drives and no time to curate all of that fast enough.Might start hoarding old CN shows I watched in my childhood like Megas and a handful of chink cartoons I have good memories of.Music I already have too fucking much and too disorganized
>>1143070>Megasloved that show. its sad it got canceled due to messy legal reasons
>>1102709use win7, it's WAY easier than setting up Arch and it also runs on any old system
seagate or wd? the eternal debate..
>>1145328I've never had a WD die on me, I buy exclusively WD blacks, and for over 10 years now. I've bought 1 seagate 15 years ago and its the only drive that ever died on me, after I used it for 10 years straight, ALWAYS ON.They are both great HDD companies.I just like the performance boost of the WD black line.
I prefer WD because they provide WD Quick Formatter tool. It can format big capacity disk Windows XP compatible. Seagate lacks that kind of software as far as i know. Of course most people don't need XP compatibility on modern drives but that's my criteria.
>>1097688when I get enough to buy a NAS, I might do that.
>>1147174Start now brother, the content may become hard or impossible to find later on.It doesn't have to be a prober NAS, just store it on an old HDD and hope it lives until you get a NAS.
I have 8x 16TB in 2x 4bay USB3 enclosures. Redundancy is snapraid. Backup to LTO. i3 8th gen NUC is the computer it's hooked to.Debian is the OS and i too use Docker, but couldn't arsed to install a frontend yet.I use Samba and NFS to export the file shares and Jellyfin for my media stuff. If you start, set a CamelCamelCamel price alarm for 16TB USB3 disks on Amazon and buy one after the other. Use snapraid for parity. Get gud. Save everything. EVERYTHING.>>1108514Appears to be a Docker frontend of some sort. Maybe Portainer? Underlying OS could be anything that supports Docker.
Information is a weapon
>>1149874You are like a babby!
Step aside. Big boi's coming in.

>>1118399You can find used NASs on Ebay and Amazon that are relatively affordable ($200-$300). You don't need anything too crazy either. A lot of 4 Bay Synology NASs support up to 12-16 TB drives. If you're using the HDD bays you'll at least want to make sure that they USB is 3.0 or your data transfers will be slowed down a little bit. >>1116158I'm looking to swap my drives out and looking at some WD blues on amazon. I didn't know there was any difference between certain Hard Drives, I figured the terms were marketing purposes. What's the difference between WD Red, Blue, etc..?>>1126609Doesn't SATA 3 only transfer at 6 Gbps..? USB 3.0 transfers at 5 Gbps.. Am I missing something?
>>1097833Only an idiot placed HDDs close to a Speaker,
>>1108514It's Portainer. It manages your docker containers and images through a web interface.
>>1109599You're wasting your money bro.
>>1151394wtf is the point of using synology NAS? Just use ubuntu server and mergerFS and call it a day. I really don't understand the point of buying over priced, underpowered hardware.
>>1151401They work just fine so far bro but thanks for the concern :)
>>1151740I have the money for the overpriced its already done for me hardware

Is the WD Ultrastar DC HC550 3,5'' HDD 18TB good for NAS use??
>>1108139>Can I seed torrents off of a NAS?Yes, you can as per >>1108144However, keep in mind that NAS is not some miraclemagic thingiemabob that preserves & extends the life of your HDDs. You have numerous tweaks and options to reduce the wear on your NAS (and thus, all the HDDs in it). By setting your NAS up as a torrent server, you are subjecting the entire array to additional wear by having it rarely go to sleep and constantly reading & writing. You might gain some speed advantages, but they don't make that big a difference in upload/download times. If you grab a torrent in 2 hours at regular speed, you're unlikely to grab it in 90 minutes with a NAS.Do what you want for your own needs, but a "better" option is to keep the NAS local for your own use with power save and sleep options to reduce wear on it. This makes it your personal, stable archive and you don't have to worry (as much) about replacing failed drives or other heavy maintenance. For your investment $$s, it will last longer and require fewer repairs & replacements.Torrent off a separate system, even use external drives. So long as you immediately copy torrents to your NAS so they are backed up, you can use these (cheaper) drives as sacrificial data devices. They can fail at any moment and you lose nothing, and you can abuse them all you want to without fear. If/when they fail, just get a new, cheap HDD at whatever capacity/price point is available on the market and fill it with whatever torrents you want to seed. Much less hassle & expense than wearing your NAS down and having to replace more expensive NAS drives/parts.Just offering an alternate option to consider. My NAS is not available to the world for many reasons such as privacy, security, & malware. My torrent box is everyone's whore and can go tits-up at any moment for any reason and I lose zero data. It's a philosophy of compartmentalizing my exposure while vastly reducing my data archive vulnerabilities to hacking & tech failure.
