you can get an old CRT TV and get a converter so you can hook it up to your pc. that would probably give you most of the feel you're looking for.
if that isn't enough you can use ffmpeg video filters. you can probably find some VHS effect scripts online that you can run the file through.

There is this old live action "Red Riding Hood" VHS I used to watch when I was a kid.

I was like 4 or 5, this was back in 1999 or something, and even then that was a VERY old movie, probably made sometime between the 50s and 70s.

The appeal to me is it was creepy as fuck. It used to freak me out when I was a kid, and I hated watching it because it was scary, very claustrophobic and dark and the costume on the big bad wolf was hideous. My mom used to put it on to torture me.

Believe it or not, companies still use cassettes as extra storage. The shelf life of a VHS tape last longer than DVDs & Blurays. The medium is still used to this day to not only preserve media but data as well. In fact, there is a market for it.

Back in the 90s, if you wanted to record a 3 hour mixtape, VHS & Beta was way to go. I grew up with VHS.

storing the rf stream would be prohibitive not just by cost but by filesize.
video is an interesting format because its completely analog signal, one might think that capturing at a higher resolution would be a waste however the signal screen width isn't limited like the height is by lines.
there are other complications like time base correction that make getting a best quality copy of vhs difficult, i seriously suggest you learn as much as you can about the format.
vhs hardware varies wildly and most decent players are getting expensive, while a best quality rip might be tempting its well worth considering getting even a watchable copy on whatever hardware you have around as soon as possible as a backup while you figure out what you want to ulitmately do.
tape will degrade with time and with use, once its digitised its not indestructible but it can be copied backed up and maintained very easily.

I have no hardware around, but I do have a 'watchable' copy I got done years ago. It's on a DVD, so not very high bitrate, and has some weird deinterlacing baked in where intermediate frames seem duplicated or something - hard to describe over text, but with fast movement for example you'll ghosting in the following frame. Not great.

The bigger issue is that most of these tapes have a chewed up first 10-15 minutes, where the picture drops out a lot and the audio is warbled and when there is picture it's very unstable and loses colour from time to time.

I'm assuming a time base corrector would help with that, but I don't really know. There's a lot to learn when it comes to this, and it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. I'm hesitant to take the tapes to a conversion shop, because that's where I got the crappy DVD rips from originally. I'm essentially looking for the mid point between that doomsday duplicator and those crappy USB devices like the one you linked. But as a layperson it's hard to tell what's worth the extra money and what's a waste, considering these are old tapes shot with an early 90s consumer VHS-C cam, so there's not a ton of quality and detail on them to begin with

For me it's 100% a nostalgia thing - I have 4k/HDR/etc versions of beloved films I grew up watching, but there's something about the crunch and buzz of a slightly worn VHS copy that's obscenely comfy and makes me feel 5 again

For me it's nostalgia, watching VHS on a CRT. Also different versions or edits of shit can look massively different - if a person can't see the difference between Sleeping Beauty (1987 VHS) and Sleeping Beauty (1997 VHS) releases they are retarded. Fuck knows how many versions of Star Wars there are now with unnecessary twattery and editing. After a million years of people fucking with shit they'll be pleased stuff got archived - so you can see how it was "supposed" to look.

Although I'm all for 4k releases, more choice and taking advantage of modern technology is a good thing.

I spoke too soon, the VCR would shut off when rewinding a tape, once it reached the beginning of a tape. I had to remove disassemble and clean the mode switch, a bit of a delicate job, but now the machine is working perfectly.

Hello anon, when I make mine, they useually run about 85gb average no compression just raw thru OBS, I make two forms, the interlaced version and de-interlaced version, when I take the raw capture from OBS and convert to a nice x265 web sharable mkv it drops down to 12gb. at this time im waiting for online hosting to hit a point where i can share this as easily as uploading a jpg image, Until this time its in a private collection of mine and im no where near death where i would need to upload my collection to a megaupload and say fuck it all have it all my fellow faggots, but even so the domesday86 project is in the works and a lot of people are ripping so we are in a transition right now for laserdiscs vs those of us capping laserdiscs, just hang tight but i myself notice how bad of a deinterlace these amateurs are doing.

I actually did this a few years ago because they remastered Lady Terminator and it looked, well, sterile. Colors were clinically stripped and bleached is the best way I can describe it. The US VHS tape is infamous because the producers/director re-edited the film with non-sensical action scenes between the actual original scenes, so you end up with a spastic experimental mess, another thing the remaster took away for some reason was an opening narration and a title scene, which in my opinion sets the mood perfectly, so what I did was take away any post-edits in order to have what might have been an original cut, it's just not the same without the worn-out look. I think the low quality VHS audio increases the ''booming voice'' effect, specially scenes with reverb. I'll make a torrent in a bit

Why would I do that when I don't need filters because I use a CRT?
