While the electronic rebellion genre known as "Cyberpunk" may have been created by a computer illiterate, it was fully adopted by the Japanese, who would be the dominate species according to foundation of this brave new world

Interesting thread, I'm posting to remind myself of checking and comparing the Death Powder file I have.

I pulled it from the archives back in 2014 or something just to bump a porn thread off but its got some good stuff

Yeah, I suspected the file would the old hardsubbed one, the English subs are wrong and incomplete. Here's a better file with no hardsubs and revised softsubs. https://we. tl/t-JRTCSnHjMY

Something interesting I found:
''Shigeru Izumiya's precursor film, Harlem Valentine Day (1982) is the very first Japanese Cyberpunk (influenced by Shigeru's involvement in Ishii's Crazy Thunder Road and acting part in Burst City). Released in the same year as Blade Runner. Asia Strikes Back (1983) from Sogo Ishii also hits more cyberpunk sensibilities as his previous films (maybe it would be more right to call it Biopunk). And can be seen as more of an early adopter of the themes and stylistic traits of Cyberpunk as well. At least predeceasing Death Powder and Tetsuo by a good few years.''
Here's the film with revised softsubs (pic related)

Sogo Ishii's punk cinema was a strong influence on the genre, 2 of them :

Panic in High School (1978) :

Crazy Thunder Road (1980): pic related

Arrow Video released Bust City (1982) by him which is also very good:

It's also worth nothing Gakuryƫ / Sogo Ishii adapted one of Katsuhiro Otomo's (yes, of Akira fame) short stories. The story was called Run (1979) and the film is Shuffle (1981). You can find a DVDRip of it pretty easily.

Worth noting Ishii's Electric Dragon is getting its first HD remaster from Adam at Third Window Films (who also put out Crazy Thunder Road). Hopefully more Ishii down the line, I know the man himself was recently expressing desires to restore August In the Water too
