Stupid Questions Thread
(and no, a thread didn't die for this)

- What DHT search engine(s) do you use?
- How can I merge two partial downloads from two torrents of the same material, on a per-file basis? Piece size is the same.
- What torrent(s) have you got stuck at ~99% needing extra peers to complete?
- What's your longest-running torrent?
>>
What's your longest-running torrent?
>>
How the fuck am I supposed to properly create a trackerless DHT torrent and have it seed to random people on qbittorrent? So far the only way to make it work is if I explicitly add a peer's IP address to the peer list and it will connect only to that specific leecher. Otherwise it just says there are 20 peers connected to my torrent but none are being seeded to.
All my network stuff looks ok, I'm connected to over 300 DHT nodes and have been seeding it for hours. Tried all the other shit like forcing re-announce, restarting, changing ports, super seeding mode (whatever that means), updating qbittorrent, etc. but nothing makes a difference.

>>
>>1214624
I think content owners grab torrents sharing their content, then the torrent w/ a fake client just to get a list of peers, and then cause the ISP (if they support it) to send users C&D emails w/ the details.

Not all content, like porn, old shows, etc... has content owners going after it to protect. Usually recent TV shows, movies, and probably music releases I guess are usually being pursued.

I'm definitely not a fed too

I try to seed at least to 3:1 (factoring in partial leeches it should be more like 3.25) ideally, 1:1 can work if everyone was n't a leech and there was never any technical error/accident but we live in reality. Seed as much as you can but if you need to stop seeding certain torrents to make room on the bandwidth/storage, set a ratio limit to automatically sort away those you've seeded more than others to maintain a minimum level of quality.

Depends on website. For twitch, and youtube there are many dedicated tools you can simply "google" to find. The deeply retarded but foolproof method is running OBS and just dead ass recording the source with it. Always works, but quality loss likely so inefficient.

its a stupid question,

but i'm trying to create this 142.7GB torrent with 64MB pieces. and its been a pain in the ass so far. (its a udemy course and it s very hard to find online, on any pirating site.)
now, when i made the torrent file, then added it again in order to be able to seed it...after the checking was over, it showed that the torrrent is only 96% complete. When I've created the torrent from the very file I'm storing it in. The files are in the folder. I can see them, but for some reason the client refuses to index them.

What do i do? I'm using Deluge for seeding, and used dottorrent-gui for creating the torrent.
(more info in picrel. this is basically my first time creating a torrent)
>>
>>1203208
I need someone to explain sequential downloading and download first and last pieces first. My understanding is sequential downloading downloads individuals files at a time. So let's say I have multi-season torrent of a show, it'll work it's way through the first folder and the first file in that folder and then progress sequentially in a typically alphabetical sequence. And download first and last pieces first means downloading the first and last pices of those individual files so you're better able to play partially downloaded files because they have the header at the front and the metadata at the back? Or does that mean the first and last pieces for the entire torrent and if so, how does that play with sequential downloading then?

>- What torrent(s) have you got stuck at ~99% needing extra peers to complete?
Stuck at 99.9% with this 2015 torrent:
https://archiveofsins.com/t/thread/640820

It is about 60 gigabytes of "My Little Pony"-related music:
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:4ce2cc82c906a383aa418b6a179dd26b25d8e26f&dn=Everfree_Radio_RIP
https://itorrents.org/torrent/4ce2cc82c906a383aa418b6a179dd26b25d8e26f.torrent

Specifically, it is a "Music dump from everfree radio as it was hosted on everfree network." I searched far and wide for the missing file from everfree.net but no dice: >>>/mlp/39772885 >>>/mlp/39774548
>Perhaps someone on /t/ has the Everfree_Radio_RIP torrent in cold storage.

Some of the music in there which I like:
"AcoustiMandoBrony - Loyalty.mp3"
"4EverfreeBrony - Giggles and Gumdrops.mp3"
"Sim Gretina feat. EileMonty - Again (JoinedTheHerd Remix).mp3"
>>
^
>Why is it stuck?
Probably because Microsoft Windows is case insensitive, so you can see how these two files were a problem for torrent clients years ago:
>19362120360 10818494 [b'ElectroKaplosion - The Downfall Of Harmony.mp3']
>19372938854 10829978 [b'ElectroKaplosion - The Downfall of Harmony.mp3']
The only difference between the two filenames is one has an upper case "o" in "Of" and the other has a lower case "o" in "of". As of 2023 qBittorrent in GNU/Linux auto-renames the conflicting file to "*.1.mp3".

>Sim Gretina feat. EileMonty - Again (JoinedTheHerd Remix)
I probably like the original/non-remixed version more. Happy music:

This is somewhat torrenting related.

When I upgraded from Win7 toWin10 (many years ago), my external drive (Seagate) became slow and my PC restarts itself about 95% of the the time when I shut it down. I've googled fixes but none help.

The drive speed is so bad, that I can't even play 1080p porn from it smoothly. When I try to torrent from it (as I used to daily on Win7), the transfer speed falls to amost 0 after some time (30+ min). I think how it works is, that Win tries to write as much as it can to the drive and when it can't keep up, is starts stockpiling the data in the RAM. When that gets maxxed out, it starts dumping it on your hard drive. I have to close my torrent client and let my PC digest all the data before it works normally again.

I suspect the restarting issue is related to this but I'm not sure.

I've tried messing with my PC's power settings (never go to sleep, never save power, etc.), changing the drive's settings in Device Manager (drive removal policy, Write-caching policy) and some other stuff I can't remember since it was many years ago before I gave up on it.

Now I just torrent to my smaller internal drive and copy to the external for storage, but I can't really seed because of drive size.
>>
>>1216559
>drive speed is so bad
>research did not return any fix
Your hard drive IS GOING TO FAIL. I basically had those exact problems happen to me, and pretty much had no backups. HDD repair cost 900+ dollars, which is way more than buying another HDD to back up to.

Your top priority now is to make sure everything is backed up on the daily. Next figure out whatever.
>>
^my HDD did mechanically fail, and I guess I will pay to have it fixed in the future. Most data on it is basically lost now, some torrents were lost, some torrents are recoverable:

And
How do I download/run the program on a virtual machine to test for viruses, do i need to get myself a raspberry pi? Or can i do it on my same rig?

>>
>>1216604
>It seems strange that it would start happening when I changed OS
Crazy how similar this is to my experience. I upgraded by switching from Windows 10 to Ubuntu and saw that one of my external HDDs was slow. My cope was that that specific hard drive didn't have the software or whatever for better performance on my OS and computer. It was the only HDD of that specific type that I had and I also thought maybe the connection cable being switched around had something to do with it.

Safest thing is to assume it will fail soon. Near the death of mine it took like 20 or 30 minutes to copy 1 gigabyte from the external drive to my internal one. Here is a video of my broken HDD - you can hear it clicking:
https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/92200188/#92269991
https://files.catbox.moe/m8ptcx.mp4

You may not have thought that you used that HDD a lot, I thought like that too, but if it has been online reading and writing 24/7 for like weeks, even if the total is not many terabytes it can still end up fucked. Also one or more people who do HDD repair say that Seagate is worse than other HDD manufacturers. (Also I had some sort of DMCA takedown from uploading Seagate's shipped-with-the-drive backup software and whatever to IA = weird.)

I have a question. I have a torrent that I added via magnet link. I'm seeing four peers at 100%, but progress is stuck at zero for days - the torrent info hasn't even been fetched from DHT. The peers show flags like TDEXI, but nothing else. Other torrents download fine. Any idea what gives?
>>
I normally leave all of my torrents active whenever I want to seed, but it seems like my upload speed is consistently higher when I'm only leaving 2-3 active at any one time - is there a reason this is happening or is it just coincidence?
>>
So I'm pretty new to torrenting, I've got qbittorrent and managed to download a few things i wanted, but whenever i start seeding i can see myself connecting to peers who have little to none of the torrent downloaded but regardless of how long i leave the active torrent seeding my ratio never goes up. In qbit i set the port to around 57000.
My question is why can i leech but not seed? I don't want to not contribute.
>>
>>1222155
Is it a popular torrent? A lot of low activity well seeded torrents wont need any uplink for days or weeks because there are already enough seeders for the few leeches to connect to.
Could be a upnp or port forwarding problem.

This might take a bit of explaining

>Have client installed on main drive on machine
>Have torrents on it that I haven't downloaded yet
>Upgrade machine and replace main drive with new drive
>Old main drive is now a secondary drive in machine
>Installed client to new main drive
>Can't work out how to copy torrents from secondary drive to new main drive despite knowing they're on there somewhere

Two things I've tried that have been suggested.
>Check roaming folder
Secondary drive doesn't have a roaming folder for some reason.
>Select all of the torrents in the client and copy them over to the new client
Doesn't work because opening the client, from either drive, just opens the newly installed client that's empty therefore there's nothing to select.

Help me out bros. I don't even have a list of what was on there to go back and get them all.

Rec.

Include the period. Has a red square icon in the Google Play Store. You can choose what format, size and length caps, and dick around with audio and timer settings. It records anything your screen sees and any audio that sounds. If you put your device on mute or low volume, your Rec. session won't record that audio reliably. I recorded something like 10 hours in 1080p easily. Also no watermarks like bandicam, so that's nice.
>>
>>1211801
bt4g.org

Type whatever screen name or username you're looking for in quotes, then add a plus sign and either "complete", "MegaPack", "siterip" or "OnlyFans".

You have to play around with the variables of the boolean string for the specific whatever you're looking for, then arrange your results by size to get the biggest, fullest megapacks the site can find (my Disharmonica megapack is into the hundreds of gigabytes from this because some kind anon collected old chaturbate camshows, onlyfans, fansly, model mayhem, pics from conventions, early deviantart stuff, twitter, social media stuff, and some customs from C4S and/or patreon), or you sort by seeders, so that the top options are uuuuuusually the newest set or pack or video of whoever you're looking for; whatever there is the most hype for at any given time, but won't likely be anything more than a single photo shoot, cosplay, singular clip, etc.

bt4g usually sources their listing from a bunch of other places and puts it all onto one easy to navigate list. With places like 1337x, kat.as, tpb, rarbg, etc you're always taking your chances that the exact thing you wanted was directly uploaded by someone who has the full thing unedited or unfuckedwith and uploaded directly to one of those sites.
>>
>>1214896
Depends on the thing being seeded. Of it is one, singular episode of a weekly syndicating show that has hundreds or thousands of seeders and leeches at any given time, 1:1 is the custom, 2:1 or more is being a good guy.

If you have something especially old, rare, niche, or specific, seed as mucvh as you can, for as long as you can. You always run the risk of losing your own files for whatever reason, and if you ever have to start from scratch, it's really great if other anons around the world basically operate as your own backup copy ready to go.

I've been seeding all my Star Trek stuff since 2006.
>>
I'm hoping you lads can help me out, and if someone can it would benefit all of us.

On this link:
https://bt4g.org/search/%22MegaPack%22/byseeders/6

The 4th from the bottom megapack is called:
Incest MegaPack [TabooHeat + BareBack]

I can;t see to open it, click it, open it in another tab, open it in another window, or open it in another incognito window.

Through some fast copy and pasting, the best I can get is:

https://bt4g.org/magnet/ac8a1c11dc697214dcace03b9f2a09ed3c536e0e

and trying to add that hash at the end using the "magnet:" prefix, and the ".torrent" suffix.

I just can't seem to figure out a way to work, I'm at the end of my wizardry. Can anyone offer some help or insight? I swear I'm not looking to be spoonfed here, but this is the only pack on the whole site that does this.

>>
Why can I copy the magnet url of some torrents, but not others???
>>
Not a torrent question per se, but I used to get movies from rarbg, each was about 2-3gb in size for 1080p x265 releases.
Signed up to a private tracker and movie sizes are pretty huge compared, like 15gb each for the same resolution/encoder.
I understand video encoding and bitrate but I never had an issue with the 3gb movies from rarbg.
Are these bigger releases for purists? Or it's just that I got used to McDonalds?

Working on a browser plugin. Given just the infohash, is there a way to find out the metadata without actually downloading anything? For example, you input b0a64119022786e4f6a0bfd797158ee0e006a8dd and it returns "linuxmint-21.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso" and maybe other details like size.

I'm guessing you have join a DHT server to get info out of an infohash?

So I downloaded a few torrents that interested me. Since I was interested in them, I was actually seeing the contents of them, and whenever I found something that didn't interest me I deleted it. Something that is obvious since otherwise you end up with Tbs of things you don't want.
Now, however, when I want to seed the files that I still have it says "Error: Missing Files" and doesn't allow me to seed.

I don't see the logic in that since if you initially select to download a portion of a torrent, that portion is seedable, so why is it different if you download the total and then delete what you don't want?
Is there a fix to this?

The program I'm using is qBittorrent
>>
>>1239472
>why is it different if you download the total and then delete what you don't want?
Torrents are split into chunks that are hashed separately. When you download files you've selected through torrent client, it will download chunks that contain those files and a bit of other files that also were in the same chunk, then hide the parts of files you didn't ask for. If you download all files (all chunks) and then delete files via other means, the torrent client will be confused by missing chunks and won't be able to immediately seed what it has left. Even if you uncheck "wanted" files in the client to match what you have on drive now, it will very likely need to download one or two missing chunks and store the parts of them that belonged to other files as hidden files.
>>1237767
>HDDs?
this is what I do
>Tape?
latency would make it unusable - peers would drop you unless desperate
>Cloud?
see above, unless you add a large local cache with prefetch
SSDs would be best but I don't think the added cost is worth it, for a lot of data.
>>1236729
>Or it's just that I got used to McDonalds?
probably this. On the other hand, what you're seeing sounds like typical size for x264 encodes, not x265, but anyway, yes, public trackers have bitstarved encodes more often than not. It works for normal people, so why bother with larger files? Autists who can see the difference will have probably joined the private trackers and will download transparent x264 encodes (smaller but almost the same visible quality as remux) at 15-20 gb or remuxes (raw quality straight from blu-ray) at 40+ gb there.

No problem, I forgot to answer your second question: eight 8TB HDDs, RAID-Z2 so I lose 16 TB but can lose up to 2 drives and still have a chance to rebuild. This is not an optimal setup for torrenting on HDDs, since RAID-Z2 doesn't get the IOPS/random IO boost like striped mirror vdevs do, but in my experience it works good enough. No problem downloading at 60 MB/s (that's random writes, batched in RAM and sent to drives every 5s - keep that in mind!), upload speeds are a bit sus since I'm mostly on private trackers but a few times I've seen some seedbox downloading from me at 40-50 MB/s (random reads, no way to practically cache those, unless you make your own hot/cold torrent pools). Almost line speeds either way.
I think that a special ingredient was setting ZFS record size to 1 megabyte instead of default 128KB, now the pool seems to work "better" with constant BitTorrent IO. You can refer to Jim Salter blog for some apparently thoughtful ZFS setup advice.

I do not know of a way to check, besides looking at the files after downloading the metadata. I would treat them the same as public trackers; download them sparingly until you get a VPN. Although i'd assume if something malicious was in them another Anon who dled it first would let us know. That will not protect you from DMCA notices though. There was a letter floating around about a guy who dled a bunch porn and is now being sued. Personally I stay away from the porn as much as I can because I think it is unhealthy, but streaming it is easier anyway.

do make sure you aren't running an older version of virtualbox, as some malware tends to try and break out of vulnerable vms

For phone homing, you can firewall it both in and outbound.
As for the virus part, that's tricky. Generally speaking, if you know a trusted source and uploader as well as knowing it's a false positive, you should be good. Other than that, it's a pure gamble. You could just google the uploader and if you're lucky enough, sites like reddit reviews might say something if it's legit or not.

iirc probably because the torrent was created on a system that's case sensitive, and had 2 copies of a song, with "of" and "Of" in title. At some point the last seed was on Windows, which is case insensitive and a torrent client that didn't have workaround for that has accidentally overwritten the files. Now we have one chunk that's gone, and we've been so far unable to find a combination of the files from other web sources that would hash to 100%.
Might have to brute force that chunk there, what, 4MB?

What concerns should I have running a few websites off the same home server I seed on? Assume a tunnel is set up to conceal the public IP.

What's the best way to make it appear that the websites are on a different IP than the seeding? Do I just... set up a second tunnel and split the traffic somehow?
>>
>>1251546
I'm not security expert, but assuming your tunnels are set up correctly, I don't see a problem.

Is it possible that 2 byte-to-byte path-to-path identical torrents can have different hashes? Making a database of them and I need to know if I should model torrents and their DHT hash as one-to-many or many-to-many relation.
>>1242481
md5 hashes are not reliable for detecting tampering anymore. Try sha256 and above instead. There won't be a centralized database like this, because only the executable creator knows an untampered hash and the third-party can only trust his words on this subject.
>>1203208
> What concerns should I have running a few websites off the same home server I seed on?
Depends on what websites, but generally it's not a good idea to sneed on the same machine you actually use the network, as the torrent client will hog up all the bandwidth and TCP connections. Having sneeder on a separate machine allows to control its traffic from the router without needing to dive into specific network implementation in the OS on the machine and you won't need configure the torrent client with quadrillion other programs in mind.
> Assume a tunnel is set up to conceal the public IP.
Whatever you tunnel to knows your real IP address. Or your ISP provider knows where you tunnel to. It's not really a concealment, but rather adding more indirection. Hope the domain registration info doesn't include sensitive info which can be tied to your home sneeding server!

I haven't cared enough to ask before but torrent speeds make no sense. And I don't think it's just my client. It has always been like this I think. Most peers you connect to have a very slow upload, then suddenly you get someone who uploads/downloads very fast. Regardless of their location in the world. Like 50 KB/s vs 50 MB/s. And it seems impossible that everyone else just has internet that is that slow. Furthermore, I've connected to people who live very close where I know both our connection speeds and we only get half of our max. Seriously none of it makes any sense.
>>
>>1252091
Those super speeds might probably come from seedboxes, while your neighbors are subbed to the shame shitty ISP which guts upload speeds and torrent traffic on top.
>>
>>1252097
some are seedboxes, but others aren't. and i doubt the isp limits torrent speeds, seems like that would be a huge scandal especially as i don't live in a third world country. i've also never noticed any signs of it, i get the speed i should on speedtest and such. and of course it would have to be irregular and specific throttling which doesn't make much sense.
>>
>>1252103
>seems like that would be a huge scandal especially as i don't live in a third world country
It wouldn't be, because they are deferring you from piracy in this case. Think of it as the same category as jewgle not letting you to jewgle "nigger", because racism is a vice. They are merely saving your soul, bro, be grateful you filthy swine.
Also first world country ISPs tend to be shittier overall. Hard data caps per month on home network subscriptions is something I only know about from DSL days. I was absolutely flabbergasted it's a norm for first world country ISPs in the current year.
>i get the speed i should on speedtest
Speedtest only tests the speeds against known servers (possibly owned by it), not randos with improperly configured network adapters/routers/firewalls/aggressive ISPs.
>and of course it would have to be irregular and specific throttling which doesn't make much sense.
You mean like detecting a protocol and throttling it? You should look up net neutrality laws, which are supposed to defer ISPs from throttling traffic based on origin. And protocol throttling is a level below it, therefore harder to prove if throttling is intentional or just a part of load balancing.
>>
>>1252309
data caps may be a thing in your country but it has never been here. and i've never read anything about throttling or data capping going on here. so i still don't believe it until i see evidence suggesting it.
>You mean like detecting a protocol and throttling it?
no that would be easy. low speed doesn't apply to whole protocol. the speed is highly irregular and often fast too. and specific to peers even using the same isp. so it would have to be even more specific filtering than countries or isps.
>>
>>1252367
>data caps may be a thing in your country but it has never been here.
Bullshit, data caps is a first world problem.
> and i've never read anything about throttling or data capping going on here. so i still don't believe it until i see evidence suggesting it.
So you've never read anything so it didn't happen? There won't be "evidence" because not a single ISP open sources their software stack in the first place.
>no that would be easy. low speed doesn't apply to whole protocol. the speed is highly irregular and often fast too.
Do you know what torrents and P2P are? To have a possibility of a stable connection/speed you and the other side both have to have torrent client/network adapter/router/firewall/ISP/VPN configured properly. And while you might believe you have everything in order, you have no control over the other side.
>and specific to peers even using the same isp.
Same ISP doesn't provide a guarantee of stable connection.
>so it would have to be even more specific filtering than countries or isps.
Yeah by protocol (can't be any more specific than that) using DPI, and IPs. Do note the torrent client also runs its own IP filtering logic.
>>
>>1252400
>Bullshit, data caps is a first world problem.
You gonna call me a liar about us having no data caps? If you live in america and think it's a first world country that's your problem.
>So you've never read anything so it didn't happen?
I've followed IT news a long time. Also russels teapot, bitch.
Your theory about malicious practice from isps doesn't make sense and you're coming off more and more as a conspiracy theorist.

Hi SQT, for some reason I can't seem to break 40-50 peers and about 7MB/s upload speeds
I have port forwarding
Torrents are spread over 2x 10k RPM disks, which can read/write over 100MB/s and are always at ~0% busy time
I have my connections set stupid high (like 1250/1000)
DHT and PEX set
I can download at 50MB/s
Why don't I have more connections? I have 77 active torrents and 20+ are very active

I've got a torrent from a private tracker, and I'm trying to try to get my ratio better by seeding all the fucking time.
But I decided to move it to a new SSD, and I don't think I understand how to make the torrent program recognize the new location.

I Right Click, select Advanced, and choose Set Download Location.
But when I select the folder I moved it to, the torrent seems to re-downloading the files.
Is that what's going on and I need to do something different, or is it checking to make sure all the files are there?

So I had been seeding a 400GB torrent for a couple of months now. Had already seeded 90GB but today when I booted up qbittorrent it said in red "error missing files"
I closed the program and when I booted it up again it said that I had 0% of the torrent.
Then I did "check", it checks up toi around 40% and then says "Error cyclic redundancy"

What the fuck? What do I do? I wanted to seed it until a positive ratio

this thread:

the magnet has the name of the file in encoded form, (encode of chinese symbols)
the chinese translates to:
>Menghan, the colorful goddess from Guangxi in 2004, was under 18 years old
>at the time. She had good looks and a good figure, and her pussy was very tender.
>She was born to be fucked by thousands of people and ridden by thousands of people.
>I knew it was too late, so I had to ask her out. Creampie her

please consider if you want to delete the thread.
I did not want to bump it.

>>1259210
some user posted the list of files of the torrent, translated they are named like the following:
>- Menghan, the colorful goddess from Guangxi in 2004, was under 18 years old at the time. ...
>was under 18 years old at the time

>- jav20s8.com 220425 Meng Han was raped Brother Muscle was fucked
>raped

>- Latest! 2 Lolita! Creampie!
>Lolita

>- [...] no condom allowed. I have not graduated from high school..
>not graduated from high school
the last one is not clear, with the others it could again suggest under 18.

seriously, why in the hell would you name these files so shit?
