How to install games:
Most games come in .tar.gz archives. Extract them and you'll get a .sh file. Make it executable (chmod +x file.sh) and run it (./file.sh) to install the game. If you use a graphical file manager, you can right click => Properties => Permissions.
Some games are ISO files. You can extract them like an archive or mount them (mount -o loop file.iso /mnt/something). If you use a graphical file manager, you can right click => Mount, or use Furius ISO Mount (available in most distros' repositories and the Ubuntu Software Center).

Guys, probably most of you are out of the loop about this but I want to talk you about AppImage and how might affect gaming on GNU/Linux.

AppImages are packages containing all the libraries required to run a program, no need to track dependencies as they are included. There are other alternatives to AppImage format but ignore the others, this is the one you should look for.

Maybe is not preferred by "purists" (like myself) but most of the the time the reasons are not relevant for gaming itself besides from maintaining a minimal system, but I believe most purists will understand when newbies use AppImages for a "one click install", quick installation and removal for testing purposes, and specially for gaming.

Right now your fellow anons could make an AppImage from any of the games here and share it which you could download and just run. Is only a matter of time before this happen regularly.

Again I am all in with source based distros and the unix philosophy but wouldn't mind having an AppImage of stuff like LibreOffice or Firefox. I hope the pro-AppImage community will reciprocate understanding there is people who prefer a more traditional system more akin to the unix philosophy.
>>
>>774711
TL;DR, the year of the Linux desktop is coming
>>
>>774711
And then someone finds a vulnerability like in libpng, and instead of updating one library and rebooting, you need to replace 150 AppImages, of which 140 will never ever get fixed.

Might as well just link it statically. Why do we even have libraries?!
>>
>>774718
so many wrong statements here I will only answer the one relevant, just consider that when you have appimages having all batteries included you can isolate the package easy without touching your root
>>
>>774731
Did you even read what I wrote? Because that happened exactly like that with a libpng vulnerability in 2014, and all statically linked programs are still vulnerable unless they get recompiled. Whereas normally installed programs linking it dynamically got fixed by just restarting them or rebooting.

It will be exactly like that when the library is embedded within an AppImage. How many do you think will get an update once a year or two has passed since release? Not many. There won't even be tools to easily find out which ones are vulnerable.

Having a multitude of copies of each library is a security nightmare. Might as well just use Windows then.
>>
>>774732
I understand what you mean but you are not considering that these games are closed and sometimes they won't allow you to switch libraries that easy.

Yes, we can do better but there are no easy alternatives when closed source is involved.

And no, I am one not happy with mass use of AppImages myself exactly for the argument you stated.
>>
>>774732
racist
>>
>>774718
Actually, from what I've gathered, they're basically just compressed iso archives containing all the libs and binaries, so replacing i.e libpng in all images could be automated and they don't seem to be meant to be used for more than a couple of small userspace tools like Gimp or games. They're not ideal, but there is no perfect solution to this.
>>
Id just like to say, if you want to game on linux and its windows only, dont use wine, use gpu passthrough on a windows vm. gets you native performance
>>
>>774786
yes there is, making games open-source and using dynamic linking

>>774793
>if you want to game on Linux, use Windows for better performance
>>
>>774795
the difference is its sandboxed and uses minimal system resources when not running since dynamic vstorage.
>>
>>774793
>use gpu passthrough on a windows vm
Some info on that?

Mainly interested for games that don't run with wine, like AA2.
>>
>>774803
https://www.startpage.com/do/dsearch?query=gpu+passthrough&cat=web&pl=opensearch&language=english
probs a guide on the front page. Obviously you need to set up a windows vm, then you need a cpu that supports it (some intel ones are jewed out of it, all amds support it). Then you need a second gpu (apu and igpu count). If you dont have a gpu on your cpu (ie fx series cpu) dont worry, a $10 gpu from your local second hand will suffice since its only going to be for driving a monitor, not for gaming. I dont use it for gaming, i use it for renting out my computers power, but you can see the applications it has
>>
>>774793
No. If you want to run a game on Linux beg the devs to port it and use Vulkan or at least openGL. Using a windows vm just encourages them not to give a shit about Linux.
>>
>>774803
you can use Xen or KVM to run a VM with full GPU access so you can run games without a performance hit

this requires 2 GPU and 2 monitors (or 1 monitor and a simple KVM switch)
>>
>>774795
>yes there is, making games open-source and using dynamic linking

I hate this.Canonical have the same concept with the "snaps" packages. If I wanted libraries hell I would be using windows
>>
What about Heores of Might and Magic 3?
>>
>>775011
is not exactly dependency hell, but if you want to call library hell to having multiple library versions don't forget about multilib and multiarch

is not an ideal world and some of us appreciate the control over libraries, but this open to conversation to security on closed source software and more specifically on games, maybe this brings enough attention for companies to take actions

I mean, this discussions even benefits windows users by bringing awareness on how shitty the windows security model is

For the two of you downloading THUG2. I should warn you that the base version of the game is actually boarder line unplayable without modded patches.

THUGPRO is an overhaul mod that adds in levels from all across the tonyhawk games.
http://thpsx.com/thugpro-info/

And in additon you will be asked to place in each disc into your computer, but you will have only downloaded virtual ISOs. Then you will have to place in a serial key to get the game to authorize it's installation.
Follow this guide for help:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPBwiqvu8mg
>>
>>775356
>>775350
You can play THUG2 without THUGPRO. TheMod1.3 (http://thps-mods.com/mods.php) fixes most of the issues that game has with Windows 7. Also, THUG PRO removes story and career modes from the game.

Also, read the fucking OP, you stupid mongoloid retarded nigger, it's a thread about games for Linux. Not the Gamecube. Not closed source malware operating systems. L I N U X.

It's a thread about Linux games, just because a system has an emulator for Linux doesn't mean it's a Linux game, else we'd just post literally any video game in existence. That'd be stupid.

I think your best bet would be decompiling it and fixing the bug yourself.
>>
>>786038
Well, I have a good idea what it might be, I think it might be the devs are just bad at defining where the script should look for XrandR, but I'm not entirely sure where to fix that, and I don't exactly want to spend 10 hours combing through scripts to find 1 line because the devs can't into coding

On a side note, this is why I pirate shit. If I spend money on something like this, that's supposed to work out of the box for my system I expect it to work.
>>
>>786096
>I think it might be the devs are just bad at defining where the script should look for XrandR
I've thought same in the past myself. I like to look at games from time to time and their progress on various systems, just wish I had more time to play them. Sucks sometimes being a workaholic.
>>
>>786123
There's also just too many games these days to really keep track of to see what ones will turn out good, and with so many devs just adding linux "support" to try to appear tech literate, its just a mess
I'll have to post it on pastebin if I can fix it, might not be the only one to run into this issue

Most games don't have that.
>>
>>786875
This, I hate DRM too and Steam is not that filled with it like some people say
>>
>>786921
You do realize Steam is by definition a DRM enforcer?
1. You don't get an installation file of the game to use and install games without steam, as you would on GOG or by buying the game directly from the developer.
2. You don't have the right to copy the fully installed game onto another PC so you can play it without Steam.
3. Unless you also install steam and log into it on another PC, you can't play most games.
4. The games are NOT your property, you don't own them as you would a physical disk or a DRM-free game. Steam has every right to prevent you from installing the game or block their services to you. And if Valve ever dies your game "ownership" also dies.
5. Majority of the games require Steam or the connection to steam servers to confirm that you legitimately own the game.

Give me some good games that you can fully export onto another Steam-less PC and play them perfectly fine even if you block connection to valve's servers.
And even if you can it would be illegal.
>>
>>786929
As said, that's not true of most games though. Maybe for the AAA titles, but nearly none of the rest have DRM. They just install normally and you can run them with or without steam, and back them up or copy them, whatever. They work just fine.

I have some 50 games from steam, and none of them have any DRM. Wouldn't buy any either.

>And even if you can it would be illegal.
Not here in Germany. The courts have regularly judged that TOS terms prohibiting this are void, as long as you own a legal copy you can do with it as you wish by the first sale doctrine. (Though bypassing DRM is illegal, so that only holds for DRM-free games.)
>>
>>787069
>Though bypassing DRM is illegal
Correction, it's not illegal, it's a breach of contract and so they can sue you for damages, but you can't go to jail for it unless it was fraudulent or something like that.
>>
>>787069
>first sale doctrine
Steam (and other DRM platforms such as Origin and uPlay) violate this by not allowing second-hand CD keys on their service. They should be sued into Oblivion and their CEOs should get the death penalty.
>>
>>787082
Steam was already sued for violating first sale doctrine and the court agreed with Steam's defense that they sell licences and not games themselves. This is how Steam is able to ban you and take away your library in the EU because you never owned anything in the first place, you were licencing it.
>>
>>787141
Even for physical games? Oracle lost against Usedsoft and EU courts ruled that selling a physical disc also transferred ownership of the license.

Not that Valve cares about consumer law anyway.

I have mint on a laptop. I want to play counter strike source. But when I run the .sh it says it the system doesn't support certain open gl extensions.

I can run csgo on this laptop albeit 3 fps. I'm a retard when it comes to this but is there a way I can get it to work?
>>
>>790956
Probably the graphics of your laptop is too old and doesn't support the required features, what type is it?
>>
Is there a way I can set my steam to only show non-linux games? I want to finish all my Windows exclusives so I can ditch Windows.
>>
>>790956
firstly stop using mint and go back to ubuntu lts
then make sure your gpu is using the official accelerated drivers. don't use open source drivers to play games unless you want to be wasting your life complaining about shitty fps.
>>
>>790986
Actually, I'd definitely recommend the open source ones if you're using an AMD GPU.
>>
>>790984
Just move exclusives into a separate "folder", favourites for example.

I've been trying to download this for several months now. It's presently at 0,4% for me, and the most I've seen available in the previous weeks is 1,7%.

So basically, around 1,5 GB of a >400 GB torrent is just sitting around and taking up >200 GB of my harddrive space.

I tried adding two working trackers, since the supplied ones didn't work:

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:118b1aac48bac73b94f8ec906afbb27a59665376&dn=LINUX&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3A80&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.leechers-paradise.org%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969

It seems someone else have done the same, because the trackers showed a couple of other leechers. But so far I've seen no seeds...

If anyone has this, seeding would be much appreciated. I can repay you by seeding conscientiously for a long time, but I need to have it first to do that.

Maybe is the trackers. I'll have to make another torrent but due to the size it will take time.
>>
>>793219
Like I said:

The trackers in the original torrent didn't work, but I added:

udp://tracker.leechers-paradise.org:6969

udp://tracker.coppersurfer.tk:6969

These two trackers work, and they have other leechers, so I am not the only one who thought about this.

You don't have to make a new torrent if you can just add these two trackers to the one you have (which is easy in for example Transmission).

In fact: It's better if you just seed the old torrent, since people are already trying to get that one. If people like me get the full set from that one, we can seed to people who rely on peer exchange for it to work too.

But yeah... Use the magnet I supplied, which has the two extra trackers :).

Just a reminder that Open Arena is a free and totally awesome linux game that you should all install and play.

It's basically a community made version of Quake 3, made after ID Software made their engine public. So first person multiplayer 3D shooter. More than 10 years after the start of the project, there are still very dedicated players, clans and communities active. There's always someone to play against.

Once you start to get the hang of it, you realize some people are REALLY good at this.

So you play some more, and beat a few of those, but realize some people are in a class above that.

And you talk to them, and they tell you about the people who are a class above them.

And so on... I've played this game pretty much non-stop for about a year, and I'm still not tired of it at all. Actually, it's even more interesting when you feel like you get really good and things are more "spot on". Plus you learn to fly with rocket jumps...

In debian based systems, you just:
> apt-get install openarena
(you need to be root or sudo to install programs of course)

You can see live streams of the gameplay here:

tv/openarenalive

If you see a player called twitch. (fucking spamfilter) tv/open join the game, you'll know you're on TV, and can share the feed with your friends and senpai :).

Also, I should mention there are tons of costum maps and such in use. And the single player is pretty good (nightmare bots are fucking HARD). There are also lots of game modes I haven't really played a lot (last man standing, freeze, harvester...).

But the main thing is deathmatch or capture the flag on the normal (bundled) maps.

Just to be clear: That should be the channel "openarenalive" on twitch. Obviously remove the "(fucking spamfilter)".

If you want to see how good it's possible to get, check out these vids with Vo0 on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux7k5MetWdQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apzv8SiqwZM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60RfW6VsZ1c

The best players these days hang out at the servers that have names beginning with ":F". There is "CTF for Geniuses" and similar.

The most active deathmatch servers for mere mortals are usually Ciggaweed or Einherjer Europe, while the most active (and beginner friendly) CTF server is Adminless (although sometimes really good players find their way here too).

You can find all these in the server lists in the game.

It might also interest you to know that there is an active IRC channel for the game at QuakeNet: #OpenArena

There is also an official webpage: www.openarena.ws

And tons of webpages for clans, mods and such, some still maintained.

PS;
If anyone gets the following custom map pack torrents for OpenArena to work, please let me know how! :)

No. There really is a difference between viral marketing and a recommendation from a player who wants you to join a game.

Besides, Open Arena is 10 year old game which is gratis and has no financial patrons. Who the hell would pay for advertising?

In my experience, OA is the most long lasting and playable game out there for GNU/Linux, and it's both libre and gratis. It should be in this thread. It should have its own thread really, but then I'd be killing off another thread, so...

Now shut up and seed the map pack torrents I'm looking for.

How is Linux gaming performance compared to Windows? I've only played small games, never tried something demanding.
>>
>>794995
if your drivers work it's as good as windows.
>>
>>771811
>Hacknet
I don't care if this was months ago. I want it too!
>>
>>794995
First, it depends on your drivers. Best performance is:
For AMD; open source drivers which are installed by default on most distros
For nVidia; official closed source drivers which you have to install manually
For Intel; the default drivers

Now, it also depends on the game and your GPU.
Most games will perform the same on OpenGL and Vulkan on windows as they do on Linux, the difference will vary depending on your GPU. DX11 and DX12 beat openGL in performance though.
There's also the issue of "emulated" games, aka wine ports. Basically games that are ported to Linux (and Mac) by devs via Wine (Rocket League and Terraria for example). These games will generally perform worse. they're ported this way either due to limitations of the engine or lazy devs.

I bought a pretty cheap stationary a year or two ago, and I have no complaints.

Since I have an nVidea card, I've got to choose between the free (libre+gratis) open source nouveau driver which works out of the box, or installing the propriatary closed source nVidea one.

The nouveau driver project is basically a bunch of guys who said:
> Ok, so these manufacturers are making closed source drivers for windows only, which sucks. We've got to write our own drivers so their cards will work on GNU/linux too. Let's reverse engineer this stuff...

Afaik there is a small performance advantage to installing the official propriatary stuff from the nVIdea website. I've found them and downloaded them (easy), I just don't want to install them. But you can.

Nouveau actually works pretty good though, so respect to the authors. I haven't had any crashes yet, and I get generally get high framerates unless I leave heavy stuff running in the background.

The good news is that nVidea have said they are working on opening up their source, to give GNU/linux developers the full specs. So it looks like either nouveau will get better, or nVidea will finally release free software themselves.

Official drivers perform around 50%-500% better. This is a huge difference. Using the open source drivers is the equivalent of downgrading your GPU by a generation or more.
