>WWN's Dying-Earth-type setting looks very similar to Book of the New Sun — which is my favorite novel — but I wonder if it has enough of a following for meetups in my city. Speaking of which, do you normally play IRL or online?
Since the pandemic, online. Everyone got used to using a VTT during it and it's just convenient. Since then folks have moved and what not, and it's easier to find more players, et cetera. We still occassionally play in person when we go on vacation together to the mountains and rent a place. But those are one offs.

>When you say it's "unplayable... at a basic level,"
Every player plays the "shadow" of the player to their left. The purpose of the shadow is to entice the player by offering rewards for giving into their darker impulses. The players must remain corporeal in the shadowlands by protecting and honoring the fetters that still tie them to the world of the living. It's convoluted and high-minded as fuck. It's just not a beer & pretzels kinda game and getting an entire table to take it seriously enough for the game not to just be stupid? Is nearly impossible. It's intentionally self-absorbed, depressing and angsty in a way that'd make most teenage boys jealous. It's just really hard to actually pull of.

>Re: Rifts, that sounds cool as hell. The creator says that it's not for n00bs, sadly.
That's what I meant by "takes himself too seriously." Here's my 8 page primer. The last 4 pages explain every single rule you actually need to play. Honestly it's that simple. Aside from those rules, it's just "read the description of the piece of equipment or the spell, and do what it says." He thinks it's a hardcore game for serious business. It's a wacky saturday morning cartoon for teenage boys.

>the Rifts handbook starts by killing "Tolkeen"
>the armies of Chicongo and massive kaiju are laying waste to the world
wew lad. Tbh, it sounds a bit less cool now... I'm always puzzled when fantasy authors take out their anxiety of influence on Tolkien instead of, you know, pledging allegiance to Mervyn Peake or something.

Wraith, on the other hand, does sound right up my alley. But baby steps first...

Thanks one last time for all your help! I sincerely hope to return one day and pay it forward.
>>
>>97093262
That's the summary I wrote of the game I was starting--not from the rulebook. But yeah:
>the Rifts handbook starts by killing "Tolkeen"
>the armies of Chicongo and massive kaiju are laying waste to the world
That's a fairly accurate summary of North America, which is the "default" setting.

Thread #01 Winter Wonderland.

Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97089644

Rules:
>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.
>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.
>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.
>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.
>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.
>Spoiler any OOC discussion.

Happy hunting.

>>97097793
You were EMPLOYED by monsters? How's that work? You didn't hunt us did you?
>>
>>97097793
Welcome friend, I have had my own share of questionable employers don't you worry. Never one of the hunt targets though, sounds weird to work for something I might get asked to kill the next day.
>>97097876
Well, at least werewolves are alive compared to the other ones we can be running into. I haven't actually seen one do any shapechanger things except from a distance so I'm afraid I can't quite see the appeal, and I'm not really sadistic enough to go watch something bleed out on the floor that way.
As for the clients, no clue what they are envisioning though seem rather insistent on living quarry. Maybe they're setting up some game reservation in some lawless land like Africa? I remember that being pretty popular in the trophy hunting circles I used to get dragged to in my childhood. My problem is more so trying to capture them alive without getting murdered or resorting to noticeable acts of terrorism.
>>97097898
I would but the clients really want either one alive or the pelt, and word of mouth around here is that you can't skin them after you kill them, bit of a conundrum. I hope I'm just imagining the market guy out of guilt or something, but it didn't seem to notice me so all should be good.
I can't really speak as for Ashwood, the boss hasn't really told us much except he'll pay us to go hunt and kill. I have my suspicions though given the specificity of some of the requests but then again he could just be an independent like my group? The boss keeps mentioning an initiation if we're competent though. It does make me feel rather uneasy, I'm just hunting these spooks as a job. Not sure I'm ready to get dragged into some weird sex cult to get more funding but maybe it's just the boss's initiation and I can keep being impersonal.
Anyway, good luck on your snake thing then. I suppose all this crazy shit would inspire someone to learn magic but for now all I I've needed are a few guns and a pipe bomb I bought off the market.
>>
>>97097905
Dreadful business. Sounds like you got away for the most part. Hopefully some work ends up in your lap soon.
>>97098239
Curiouser and curiouser. If you do not mind me asking how did your current boss contact you? Or did they give you a business card?
>>97097898
Tch, fair enough. I let myself get pulled into the story. I should've cut it short, I apologize. Hopefully something turns up for your wyrm.
>>
>>97098296
The boss found me at a bar, said he'd seen my skills at hunting and asked me if I would like to do some hunts "of a more grandiose kind" in exchange for helping my group's financial situation. I thought he meant we'd be hunting hippos, elephants, poachers. Not men who can literally turn into wolves or other weird things. The first red flag should have been when he said we could start the same day in Northern England. Ended up chasing down some fellow who looked like two to three dudes put together when we took off his trench coat. I might be in too deep
>>
>>97098319
Fascinating. I was thinking someone else might've reached out. Sounds like your first "grandiose" hunt was very intriguing. Was it particularly difficult to pull the coat off?

Can someone explain me the Necromon BT23 timing it said When another digimon attacks, so when does the effect trigger as he is declaring the attack or similar to the ace and i have to wait for him to resolve his when attacking effects?
>>
>>97098456
It's All Turns, so you can use it when either you or your opponent attacks.
Timing is the same, it it's your turn, you have turn priority so you activate it when your Digimon's When Attacking effects happen, opponent's turn you activate it after their When Attacking but before counter (blast) timing
>>
What is the least awful way to play justimon?

Will they make a ruling about this not counting as an "Impmon" like Blimpmon?
I think they should let it happen just for fun.
>>
>>97098531
Ignore the devices entirely and just go for a Cyborg/Machine deck with the original Justimon (plus X-Anti probably) as your top end. Kazu and Marvin instead of Ryo for tamers (and maybe Altea if you want to try to make some janky Invisi/Justi build)

Isn't doing something that takes multiple rounds penalty enough?
>>
>>97093049
Yeah but in that case the player in question would have to wait more turns to complete his intent and would make combat kind of a slog.
>>
>>97081281
Check out games like ACKS that are about getting to higher levels and add more than just combat. 5e basically falls apart around level 10 and they didn't really care cause they assumed no one would get that far.

If TSR didn't sell off their assets to Wizards of the Coast, /tg/ would be a very different place today. We probably wouldn't have as many GURPS autists, not as many people wasting all their money on card stock for another media tie-in for soulless "Magic the Gathering", and there would be no such thing as 5e. D&D would have stayed as it was and there would have never been any need for an Old School Renaissance general. Can you imagine /tg/ without all this? Gamers here would actually play games. And I imagine them happy.

Hey guys! Got into cards with Sorcery. I was drawn in by the art which imo is so beautiful and creative and unlike anything else I’ve seen. I bought and opened a box of alpha and it must have been either a misprint box or I hit the Unique Site jackpot because I got 8 of them in one box.
I am excited and holding back from looking at Gothic spoilers.

Equipment in FaB should have just always been in the token slot, it was retarded to make them collectible. It gives the impression that the game is some sort of mens club that you have to pay a certain amount of membership into
>>

One Piece did it better. 95% of the cards have a variant of them that cost like 1 cent and then the sky is the limit for collectibles.

But you just rephrased what I said. Exalted doesn't have a clear vision of what it's supposed to be, and devs keep adding details that bloat the setting in terms of scope and just sheer information. The setting needs to be focused and trimmed back to deliver a much more cohesive experience that most tables can actually use. I don't think we disagree, I just don't think you like how I said it.

Yozi have always explicitly not been people. They're the color from outer space or Azathoth or an innumerable number of things that are absolutely not comparable to the human mind. The Ebon Dragon is the one closest to something resembling a sapient mind, but even his persona is more of a mockery of mortal existence.

This describes the overwhelming majority of TTRPGs.

For some reason nobody ever seems to think about just how fucking weird this would make the world. Just think about it. Humanity operating under those rules would never even make it past the stone age. We'd still be living in fear of animals.

And it's hard to even imagine the ramficiations of gatekeeping the ability to kill in such fashion. It would destroy the social dynamics we are used to in the real world.

You are comparing two incomparable things a F1 car that is a physical thing specifically designed for one purpose (driving laps at incredible speeds) and a broad set of written tabletop rules that govern the mechanics of a tabletop game system. They aren't the same. However if you want me to indulge your metaphor then i will with my own that there is no reason why as owner of the F1 car you cannot request from the manufacturer tires and other modifications allowing it to do those things, to whatever degree of success or time it takes to do so. It is entirely however on people making those parts to custom make it to do that and not on you the owner of the F1 car. It doesn't make sense for someone who owns said F1 car to have to go out and shell out more money for a extra vehicle he may not be able to afford, again barring those exceptions i stated already to buy a different vehicle to accomplish that task
>>97096610
there's no reason why they would only only sell a apples and not oranges even then when told "hey i would like oranges" there's no reason to keep it the same and only sell apples or tell them they can only have apples. there are plenty other ways they can add those rules after like putting it on their website, since they are the publisher no reason why they couldn't take it on themselves and publish options for grittier rules after the book on their site or as a pdf for those who want it, the point is there is no reason why it shouldn't be a option at all or one that is available to those who want it. Another is to ask for what you're asking for from the person who made that system, it shouldn't be being fated to play one system one way forever.

You can request it. But if the manufacturer doesn't make the parts you need, they won't sell them to you. Because they make parts for F1 cars, not for trucks. They aren't going to alter their entire operation to cater to one person who wants a truck
>It doesn't make sense for someone who owns said F1 car to have to go out and shell out more money for a extra vehicle he may not be able to afford
And it especially doesn't make sense for the manufacturer to go out of their way to get you all of the parts needed to convert an F1 car into a truck if that person doesn't even have the money to pay for it.

>there's no reason why they would only only sell a apples and not oranges even then when told "hey i would like oranges"
It's an apple stand. The person grows their own apples. For them to sell you an orange, they'd either need to grow oranges (which would take time for an orange tree to grow and may not even be possible based on the climate), or find another supplier. But instead of doing all of that, they'd simply point out that there's an orange stand directly across the street that you can go buy an orange from.
Why should you continue to ask the apple seller for an orange when there's already people selling oranges?

>it shouldn't be being fated to play one system one way forever
Correct. But you already aren't fated to play one system forever. You can play a different system. And distinctly from cars or fruit, you also aren't reliant on a factory or a farmer to provide you with a product, because you are also entirely capable of making your own homebrew rule changes and options that you want to see.

Firearms are always cool, but it depends on what you want your character to be. Sometimes you can't sneak a gun into an area for instance. Other than that, weapons are cool, everyone loves swords

I saw the box on my dads shelf and was instantly enamored. He played a game with me, jumpscaring me with Destructor standing right behind the door and wrecked me with surprise genestealer while running away. I played a game with my four year old and with some handholding he played quite decently, even managing to damage the Destructor
