But you just rephrased what I said. Exalted doesn't have a clear vision of what it's supposed to be, and devs keep adding details that bloat the setting in terms of scope and just sheer information. The setting needs to be focused and trimmed back to deliver a much more cohesive experience that most tables can actually use. I don't think we disagree, I just don't think you like how I said it.

Yozi have always explicitly not been people. They're the color from outer space or Azathoth or an innumerable number of things that are absolutely not comparable to the human mind. The Ebon Dragon is the one closest to something resembling a sapient mind, but even his persona is more of a mockery of mortal existence.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Random generation enthusiast here; I ask your indulgence for a slight tangent:

What are the best tables or lists you know of for generating psychedelic/exotic locations and world generation? For my own gratification I've been trying to gather up a bunch of tables to amalgamate into a huge set that I can use to slap together anything I want at random, but while I can find plenty of resources for relatively mundane features I've been having trouble finding the weird stuff that might be useful for pocket dimensions, extra-planar adventures, other planets and stuff like that.

I've dug through a lot of material in various troves but it seems like most of them don't get stranger than features like altered gravity or unpredictable spellcasting while I'm looking for stuff like oceans of blood, rains of food (a la Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) or topologies that include ringworlds and dyson spheres.
>>
I'm interested in Die Vecna Die. It's not OSR except by the most generous of definitions (published by TSR) but the idea of a scenario where players can meet a lot of iconic D&D characters is appealing to me. Is anyone familiar with it? How "story-based" is it?

>fighting with a weapon is only marginally better than fighting unarmed (instead of being hundreds of times better like in real life)
>the only practical way to kill people is to invest every last skill point into combat
>tools provide only a miniscule bonus to performance
This describes the overwhelming majority of TTRPGs.

For some reason nobody ever seems to think about just how fucking weird this would make the world. Just think about it. Humanity operating under those rules would never even make it past the stone age. We'd still be living in fear of animals.

And it's hard to even imagine the ramficiations of gatekeeping the ability to kill in such fashion. It would destroy the social dynamics we are used to in the real world.

You are comparing two incomparable things a F1 car that is a physical thing specifically designed for one purpose (driving laps at incredible speeds) and a broad set of written tabletop rules that govern the mechanics of a tabletop game system. They aren't the same. However if you want me to indulge your metaphor then i will with my own that there is no reason why as owner of the F1 car you cannot request from the manufacturer tires and other modifications allowing it to do those things, to whatever degree of success or time it takes to do so. It is entirely however on people making those parts to custom make it to do that and not on you the owner of the F1 car. It doesn't make sense for someone who owns said F1 car to have to go out and shell out more money for a extra vehicle he may not be able to afford, again barring those exceptions i stated already to buy a different vehicle to accomplish that task
>>97096610
there's no reason why they would only only sell a apples and not oranges even then when told "hey i would like oranges" there's no reason to keep it the same and only sell apples or tell them they can only have apples. there are plenty other ways they can add those rules after like putting it on their website, since they are the publisher no reason why they couldn't take it on themselves and publish options for grittier rules after the book on their site or as a pdf for those who want it, the point is there is no reason why it shouldn't be a option at all or one that is available to those who want it. Another is to ask for what you're asking for from the person who made that system, it shouldn't be being fated to play one system one way forever.
>>
>>97096823
>there is no reason why as owner of the F1 car you cannot request from the manufacturer tires and other modifications allowing it to do those things
You can request it. But if the manufacturer doesn't make the parts you need, they won't sell them to you. Because they make parts for F1 cars, not for trucks. They aren't going to alter their entire operation to cater to one person who wants a truck
>It doesn't make sense for someone who owns said F1 car to have to go out and shell out more money for a extra vehicle he may not be able to afford
And it especially doesn't make sense for the manufacturer to go out of their way to get you all of the parts needed to convert an F1 car into a truck if that person doesn't even have the money to pay for it.

>there's no reason why they would only only sell a apples and not oranges even then when told "hey i would like oranges"
It's an apple stand. The person grows their own apples. For them to sell you an orange, they'd either need to grow oranges (which would take time for an orange tree to grow and may not even be possible based on the climate), or find another supplier. But instead of doing all of that, they'd simply point out that there's an orange stand directly across the street that you can go buy an orange from.
Why should you continue to ask the apple seller for an orange when there's already people selling oranges?

>it shouldn't be being fated to play one system one way forever
Correct. But you already aren't fated to play one system forever. You can play a different system. And distinctly from cars or fruit, you also aren't reliant on a factory or a farmer to provide you with a product, because you are also entirely capable of making your own homebrew rule changes and options that you want to see.

Oh my bad you wanted hard stats. Maybe check out the Hurt Locker supplement or talk with the ST over it to Frankenstein together something.
Essentially a flail or morning star is just a chain with a weight at the end, and a longbow is just a big bow. You might have to just make stuff up for that. Keep in mind actually using a flail would be pretty hard
>>
>>97098515
It's about perfecting yourself & removing limits. If you prey on humans you have a whole lot of bullshit you now need to put up with.

You've got to go out stalking or spend time getting prey to come to you, which could compromise your time & energy spent becoming more powerful. Killing people creates loose ends & draws attention, it can also compromise your image. You aren't a slave to your Beast & you don't need to go around slurping someones neck like an animal with blood dripping down your chin.

If you absolutely must, you can take Stolen Kisses & sample blood from a crowd with little risk, but that's still time spend going somewhere to get food. Better to buy a bunch of blood no one cares about & keep in nice & sealed in a large storage room near your ritual chamber.

I still think this book was the best way to manage martials. 4e's "daily" powers etc for fighters made them all feel samey (at least on the surface). 5e's battle master has no scaling.

I'm sure at this point we can all agree the Tome of Battle got too much flak.

For combat specialists I'm pretty sure Duskblade would be better. PA with True Strike goes hard.
>>
The most balanced way to play 3.5 was to allow Tome of Battle, Psionics, Beguiler, and nothing else.
>>
>>97098359
Here is the class list I used for a game once. The beguiler was the strongest of these options or maybe it was just that the player was particularly good.

> Beguiler, Dread Necromancer, Crusader, Bard, Swordsage, Binder (without access to the summon monster vestige), Duskblade, Factotum, Warblade, Psychic Warrior
>>
>>97098385
Enlightened choices. Sounds like it would have been a fun game. Any particular reason for omitting Warlock if you went that far, though? It's basically "Man with Gun" and a few supporting tricks.
>>
>>97098393
Each class was a guild in the setting. I left out Warlock because they’re not very strong. They’re a bit more specialised. Not a bad class and in the right hands I’m sure it could hold its own. But it just lacked the versatility of say a bard or even dread necromancer. Psychic warrior very nearly didn’t make the cut but what it does it does very well and I liked having at least one psionic class.

I contend that based on mechanics, ease of use and adaptation, ease of modification (though I would stick to Pondsmith's version as much as possible as it's just about perfect), it's rules being shown as accurate to real life firefights in a study done recently and the fact that it's modular and can be dropped right in and used in ANY tabletop game with firearms: that R. Talsorian Games/Mike Pondsmith have created the GREATEST tabletop system for gun fights in the history of TTRPGs.

Thoughts? If you disagree I'd love to hear why or if you agree please post why. Let's get a discussion going on this stellar and very unique combat system and frankly, game overall itself.

.45-70 isn't featured in NIJ standards. Armor deformation is also one reason why armored clothing isn't a thing. Even if a special fabric was to stop bullets, there would be nothing to prevent the clothes from being pushed inside the body as they're loose.

Maybe, but the doujins where the "bull"/ugly bastard is the protagonist (and therefore the doujin is catered to that power fantasy) are different to those where he isnt.
Narrative focus is important.
>>
>>97097704
I don't think you got the original point. The setting is a power fantasy for when you PLAY as chaos, and a disempowerment fantasy when you don't. Look at shit like r/sigmarxism and you'll find people who love playing chaos to "own the right" and who love playing order to self-flagellate.
>>
>>97081746
I could be cool with the "chaos always wins" motif if chaos as a whole wasn't so annoying and poorly written. It's cartoon villain edgy, comically stupid and it runs off unfiltered plot armor. It's never humbled or so much as inconvenienced and the writers back it up like an annoying kid's older brother.

How many nations would have actual, military-grade subs, though? The germans have the Unterseeboot and the Spanish have the Peral, but from what I've read, nations such as France and the Tsardom have non-armed submarines. Not sure if I've missed other examples.
>>
>>97098299
Libertalia has one, more accurately one sub has Libertalia. Atlan has some of questionable functionality, and some of the merc factions like the Golden Syndicate may have recreations of the Fenian Ram or a version of the Sub Marine Explorer pearl diving ship.
Also the Netherlands but I try not to mention them to delay someone making the inevitable netherlands faction book for as long as possible.
I think figuring out the specifications of each (especially the Uboats) and how/where they're used would be a lark.

We'd need their lore first. And genuinely don't know what their angle could be.

Their angle is safety bikes. Also maybe the N.E.T.E.C since that one is kind of a fusion of the British EIC and some other groups, being ill-defined as it is.
But I'd prefer to define the non-Mu Saur Clans from the chart as a faction before the Netherlands personally.

>Also, The Dracon. Is he just a rabidly anti-Ottoman guy from the Danubians or are vampires real and canonical?
I believe the original intention was to deliberately never clarify whether or not he’s literally Dracula/a vampire, but he’s not my creation so take that with a grain of salt.

Welcome to the New School Revolution General, the thread dedicated to games derived from the OSR movement.

>What is the NSR?
the NSR is a subcategory of the OSR, it mostly follows the same play style but experiments further with the mechanics and settings
*broadly NSR games*
*have* a gm, a interesting setting, living world
*are* rules light, deadly
*and focus on* emergent narrative, external interaction and exploration

>What is this thread for?
This thread is for system, adventure, setting, mechanics, ongoing campaigns, anything that related to the *actual* game
POST ART ALSO, inspiration and for the tg threads

>What is this thread NOT for?
Meta discussions or drama of the games and its creators aka shadowboxing with twitter, reddit and the OSRG (frens with osrbros)

I liked MoSh and only after that tried WHFRPG, so it felt like adding rules to something I could easily run.
I'm not sure if a lite NSR game is a good way to start before moving into more crunchy games, but in my experiences when seeing the other people at the table it did help a lot.
>>

compared to going into it an rpg virgin it obviously helps as long as you re open to different rpgs behaving differently.
My experiences are different because i started with crunchy board games just like every person i know and have ever played with and then got into crunchy rpgs till we eventually downsized.
I like nsr for the very casual times when i meet some old friends and wanna run a couple of one shots and play something simple because it is the only thing time allows.
If we had the option for a full on campaign we would play a crunchy system for sure.

I don't know about campaigns needing the crunch, I've been reading Mythic Bastionland and there are some really great ideas for a long story without moving too far away from ItO. There's a lot of growth through actions more than leveling up.
I heard it was thematically inspired by Pendragon and that's on my list if I ever get a group willing to go through a multigenerational game that takes a year of weekly play to complete.

I bought the Castles and Crusades print bundle, can't wait to read and play it.

What does it contain?

I am not saying it's necessary, i simply like crunchy games, these were my intro to the hobby.
I am sure one can sustain a campaign in Mythic Bastionland.
Also Pendragon is excellent and i highly recommend it

What do you think of combat-focused games with encounter-building budget guidelines and the "dragons should be better" phenomenon?

Some combat-focused games have encounter-building budget guidelines. Each monster has a "point cost" (specifics depend on the game). The GM adds up and references these "point costs" to roughly assess how easy or hard the fight will be.

I have noticed that some games like to have dragons break those guidelines. For example, in D&D 3.5, dragons are infamously under-CRed. A fight with a dragon of CR X is, more likely than not, going to be significantly more difficult than a combat with some other monster of CR X.

I have fought the various dragons of Draw Steel. I can safely say that they very much go above and beyond their listed "point costs." For example, I have found that the level 2 solo thorn dragon, brawling down on the ground without ever using its breath or flight, is a significantly more dangerous enemy ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JyrnHfZ1pUTCW4GJMtB-agThnhNjtaw9Dc39tJAqx5M/edit ) than the level 4 solo ashen hoarder or the level 4 solo manticore. (The upcoming adventure of Draw Steel, Dark Heart of the Wood, is currently set to culminate in a battle against a thorn dragon... under an open sky, in a vast map, with the PCs starting at least 20+ squares away from the dragon horizontally and at least 12+ squares vertically below.)

13th Age 2e gives dragons significantly better numbers than other monsters of the same "point cost". The bestiary even says:
>Freaking tough: We might have gotten the math "wrong" with these guys. Like we said, dragons have reason to believe they are the heroes. Remind the players that we didn’t even try to balance dragons, and their adventurers have the option to retreat.

Justifications for this I see include "Dragons should intentionally break guidelines, because dragons are cool" and "PCs are supposed to fight a dragon super-duper prepared, and should never just randomly encounter one."

I'd rather leave it to the cell-by-cell random generation procedure I create, opening up possibilities for enemy and environmental combinations I may not have thought of before.
>>
>>97091880
Largely depends on the goal of the points costing/CR system. Most ttrpgs aren't really wargames so the challenges aren't balanced in the sense of an even fight, they're designed around however many of those the party is suppose to be able to successfully defeat or win or whatever without it being too easy so everyone can feel good about themselves and get to the next story segment or whatever.
If the measurement is a general guide as oppose to a well tested and mathed out measure then you likely still have some wiggleroom to make it work and the effects of the battle being quite difficult compared to others is as intended, its the high end of a range.
Overall though, combat focused games with challenge ratings are trash and people need to either man up and do more free form kreigspiel combat as are accepting the consequences of it, or play a wargame. Designing a ttrpg as an analogue jrpg is lame as fuck.

So that the GMs are taught that they can't rely on just banging stupid made up numbers together to create fun combat encounters and have to actually think about things, Edna.

>game has specific guideline for calculating combat encounter strenght
>but game purposely break this guideline for meta reasons
That's an hallmark of a fecal rulesystem right there, either you give me the fucking tool or not, it's up to me to decide if using the shit. It's beyond me how this could be even acceptable by anyone.

NTA. I agree with your point narratively and from the perspective of DM responsibilities. However it bothers me that it's mathematically inconsistent. It would make some DMs/Players lose trust in the system (if dragons are broken, what about _____s?). For me it reveals a structural problem in the design, just as this anon said >>97097899
