so in out of the abyss you start in a prison of the drow. who would be put there and how would the drow get ahold of them? no clue about the lore and trying to come up with a character
>>97098748>who would be put there and how would the drow get ahold of them? Night-time raids, typically. At least in the context of surface-dwelling races. That'd usually be focused on smaller settlements like towns or villages where a relatively small force of drow are able to handle any defenses. And because it's in the midst of the night, even a relatively skilled warrior or mage could find themselves surprised and overwhelmed. The other likely way would be that drow raiding party coming across people traveling or camping in the wilderness. That'd be the most likely way for someone from a larger city to end up caught. Drow do also conduct raids on other races in the underdark, where the normal night-time tactics wouldn't apply. But if you're less familiar with D&D lore it's probably going to be easier to roleplay someone who isn't from the Underdark anyway, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Does anyone here know of skirmish-sized wargames (so, a handful of units max) that allow for narrative campaigns? I know many skirmish games do, but unlike them (in which /yourdudes/ usually belong to this or that faction and then end up running into other players' /yourdudes/), I am looking for games in which players are expected to seize and hold ground. I am interested in the dynamics of what could happen if a player attacks another player's base and that other player isn't home. Or how to handle pairings when player decisions themselves decide the direction in which a certain warband is moved.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >When the mob finally broke through the doors of the Gestatum, Sir Danforth knew at once that he would never again leave it. For he knew the catalyst of the people's fear, more acutely than most, as it had long ago taken the lives of his wife and son: the plague known as the Quietus. And their fear, like the disease, had as yet no known cure other than the sword...

>>97098188of course i forgot the image.
>>97098188Oh it's even better than that. You CAN just rip a part off a monster and stick/swap it onto another (and it's cheaper to do that cause then you do already have that part on hand)... But the system's entire point is how MODULAR it is.Every single ability of every single part of every single monster can be modified, the blocks can be rearranged, added or subtracted to, and combined in all manners of ways to make funky flavorful abilities, and the kicker is, it would be expected of the dm to do so if they want to make homebrewed monsters... But it's allowed for and expected from the players to also do this as they improve their little guys or create new ones wholesale. It's fuckin amazing.
