Maybe a general can pop up in time. For now, I'm just curious about what people think about it. While I don't think they're the greatest shit to grace bookshelves, I did enjoy the books. I've skimmed the beta rules and other free stuff that's around, and I don't hate it, especially because it's not a 5e module nor is it a 5e clone. It's a d20 system, so there are similarities. What are your thoughts? How do you plan on running a game, will you try to thread a needle into canon or will you make a tangential timeline?
>>93769199Want to know what I think Brandon? I think you had something really special with stormlight archive but you decided to totally ruin your characters In the fourth book. Wtf did you to Shallan? She had such good development but then you decided to make her into a bull dyke. Fuck you man
>>93769256... What?
>>93769256What are you talking about, guy?
>>93769199It feels like a combination of DnD 5e and Pathfinder 2e with some FFG starwars mechanics thrown in, some banded initiative, multiple different defense classing, no spellcasting. The base rules seem solid, and the class system is easy to rip out or replace for any setting or homebrew, which is a plus. Overall, after doing the playtest, it is deceptively deeper than 5e, but not as bloated as pf2e.
>>93769199>there are equipment packages you can start off with that determine what your starring equipment and money is>one of them is Prisoner>no gear but rags and manacles>no weapons>no money>you get a spren waifu ready to make you into a Radiant Knight once you gain some levels, thoughAre you a bad enough dude to Dark Souls this game?
>>93769797>>93769874NTA but he's addressing the author of the books from which Cosmere is derived; Brandon Sanderson. Personally I think it's highly unlikely that Sanderson has had much involvement at all in the development of Cosmere, let alone spends his time on Mongolian basket weaving forums to guerilla market. He's probably too busy churning out half a novel of literary slop on a daily basis to devote any time to anything else. Even on the official pages for it I can't see any official endorsement by Sanderson or a sign that he's at all involved with the effort, which is kind of weird considering it's his IP.
>>93769916He's put out a lot of content, including videos, tiktoks, and stories of how much he has wanted to do this for a long time. He has addressed canonical content and helped write one of the modules, which is designed to fill in some information and context for the next book.
>>93769897I would like to try it, but the way it's presented, it's basically just totally not Kaladin, but I guess it's just a balance thing.
>>93769916He's a rare author who actually knows how to manage his time. He writes through the night, sleeps in until about 1pm then has eight hours to spend on family and other stuff. He does a podcast where he's always talking about stuff he's watched or games he's played. He probably has time to work with RPG people.
>>93775798Sorry. You're right. Instead of asking about something new, I should have made another 40k thread
>>93769256yeah the way shallan was written from book three to book four was really drastic. also felt incongruous that one of the subplot of the book was how Roshar didn't have therapist and a limited understanding of mental health but then Shallan starts using for precise, modern, descriptions for her DID alters
>>93769256>She had such good development but then you decided to make her into a bull dyke.>Shallan>bull dyke???
How the fuck is Allomancy going to work in the system? Are we going to have to keep track of individual metal reserves and investiture?
>>93776893That's a great question. I'd imagine simple stuff wouldn't matter but flaring might use invest. Maybe each metal will have its own investiture for mistborn?
The most unrealistic thing in the serie so far is Kaladin still being single even now. The lad is a textbook love interest in young girls romance book.>dark and brooding, but with a soft, vulnerable side>dangerous and intimidating, but actually gentle and yearning for affection>hurt deep within, in need of being fixed (by love)>rich and nobleI know he's actively avoiding relationships, but come on. Ladies should throw themselves at him by now.
>>93769199I just don't care about Sanderslop
>>93769256You should genuinely seek some kind of help for your extreme paranoia.
>>93769897Wrong soulslike bro.
>>93781500The more I see people on 4chan hate on it like this, the more I think it's actually fine
>>93781453Kaladin's story gets rehashed every book. He gets depressed, he stops being depressed, he gets an anime powerup. It's even worse now that it's stated he has chronic depression, making it seem like hus earlier suffering was just hormonal imbalance, not trauma from hus brother dying in a ditch.
>>93769256I don’t understand the hate really. Do people here just hate anything popular that isn’t a TTRPG?
>>93769199If you’re planning on playing as a Radiant, what Order would you prefer and why? I’d be a Lightweaver, I love illusion powers.
>>93769256>not hating Shallan since the first page she appeared This is the real mystery to me.
>>93791774I got got Lightweaver on the test, though Truthwatcher was pretty close
>>93788012Chronic depression isn't a hormonal imbalance. People with hormonal imbalances may have depression as a symptom, but there's no known fixed cause for depression related disorders at all. Anyone telling you otherwise is just trying to sell you SSRIs.
>>93792937This.>Shallan chapter
>>93792937The chad Shinri:>a worthy student who excels despite being effectively forced into the role>truly loves her betrothed, despite him being obviously not into her>genuinely torn between the noble life and an innate desire for freedomThe virgin Shallan:>noooo muh magic device>no redeeming qualities, every pleasantry is masking a scheme>her nicest trait (painting stuff) is some kind of twisted narcissistic wiccan possessiveness shit
>>93791774Edgedancer/Pewter Twinborn.>infinite strength from compounding Pewter>boost every other physical stat by burning Pewter normally too>store strength then restore the muscular wasting with Progression before storing it again to get even more strength without needing to Compound>train hard then use Progression to heal the damage to your muscles to improve your base level strength before Pewter burning comes into effect>reduce friction to get superspeed along with your superstrength>use Progression to heal away any injuries you get for super toughnessBecome fist wizard. Cast punch.
>>93796605Abrasion + the super balance of pewter is actually a pretty sweet call.
>>93791774How does one do Dustbringer without being an edgy cunt?
>>93769199After being a full Compounder, what abilities would you prefer for a Mistborn campaign? I'd probably be a Twinborn in Era 2, though I'm not sure if I would go for being a Compounder or not or if I'd go for a combination with more versatility like Wax and Wayne have.
>>93796803I imagine a good Dustbringer to be like a zen monk, always training to be serene and keep control
>>93769199Game looks fine if your into semi crunch d20 games, the setting however ... YIKES
>>93788012It was pretty blatantly implied he had chronic depression since book one, but everything else in his life still makes it infinitely worse than his childhood bouts of melancholia. I do think Brandon drank the mental health cool-aid too much for book 4, likely "Too many cooks in the kitchen" Issue with all the people he named as assisting. Mental health was always core to Stormlight, but now it feels like he got really pushed towards making the depictions "realistic". Most of what he achieved in doing so is reducing the depth of Kaladin, Shallan, and Navani to JUST their issues.
>>93794666Who the fuck is shinri
>>93789473>Do people here just hate anything popularYes.
>>93769256>bull dyke>married to a man>spent the two books lusting after husband best friend because taller, darker, handsomer>sad women decide she's bisexual because jasnah forced her to attend her bath>thinks constantly about how hot her husband is>bull dykeDon't buy your books from Wish you fucking idiot.>>93781453No time for love, got to invent therapy and think about protecting people. Also didn't he have a short fling with someone between 3 and 4?>>93788012He had chronic depression in the first book. In the flashbacks his little brother had to constantly pull him out of depressive spiralling. This was before anything bad had happened to him. The worst thing that had happened to him at that point was he had to see a girls mangled hand because he was training to be a surgeon. The traumas made it worse, but he was always this way.>>93791774Skybreaker unironically. The idea of a Sherlock Holmes type as a magic knight with his fairy Watson he can summon as a sword is just chefs kiss tier. Now as for OP. What I love about this system is you cannot start as a Radiant Knight and have to multiclass into it. Really every level you take comes with a cool ability. And then even if you want magic Radiant powers you are forced to roleplay, to say the words. Genius. Also gives great potential for the DM to uplift characters.
>>93799109What would the spren think? Also, what are the later ideals? Only second ideal is self mastery
>>93769199Riddle me this /tg/: Why do people like Brando Sando's books?I've read the entirety of Mistborn and the first book in the "Mistborn but wild West" saga. The magic system and what he does with it is cool and all but what about everything else? The plots, the characters and I'd even say the world building taken as a whole are somewhere between ho-hum and serviceable.
>>93801892>Skybreaker unironically. The idea of a Sherlock Holmes type as a magic knight with his fairy Watson he can summon as a sword is just chefs kiss tier.I don't know brother, I can see the appeal but you'd have to deal with a highspren on a daily basis and thoses seem outright unpleasant to be around.
>>93805439>Why do people like Brando Sando's books?Having read most of his works, I would say people like them because he is extremely formulaic. He has a very strict idea of how to construct a story, and he sticks to it almost always. The main character has to go on an arc (preferably one he hasn't had before) and have character development, there has to be a twist or a reveal that gets foreshadowed before being revealed etc. These are very basic storytelling blocks, but him sticking to them so reliably and steadfastly means his books are fairly satisfying to read to people who don't read that much/don't think about what they read that much. You never get the George R.R. Martin issue of a plotline going for hundred of pages only to end with the POV character dying and nothing being achieved. With Sanderson, you know exactly what you are going to get, which especially at first, works fairly well. It's only if you read more of him, or are a avid reader in the first place, the flaws of his formula become apparent and his works become highly predictable.
>>93800131the proto shallan from the original draft of way of kings
>>93805439Beyond the magic systems, I really like the plots because he makes very good use of foreshadowing to build up the twists, where you can spot them early and watch as the evidence is laid on more and more, proving your guess right, or it hits you out of nowhere and you can immediately see the clues hidden in plain sight, recontextualizing a bunch of scenes. I'll never forget the point in Hero of Ages where I'd figured out one of the twists early just from reading one of the epigraphs, only to immediately realized I could have figured it out a quarter of the book earlier.
>>93806350The big twist that was hinted at all the way from the first book, especially the ending?
>>93806389See, that could be any number of things, because Brandon set up so much stuff in the first book. Specifically though I'm talking about Vin's earing being a hemalurgic spike, and her brother in her head being Ruin
>>93806164He actually uses the Heroic Journey, which is almost universally effective.>>93806389Good twists have foreshadowing, anon, otherwise it is an ass-pull or Deus Ex Machina.I don't think you understand good writing.
>>93806434Yes, that's what I was talking about. The whole thing was setup in plain sight even with Vin's mom killing her sister and giving her the earring, which is specifically mentioned in the second book in more detail as her mom stabbing her with the earring, which is also around the time Sazed and Marsh are exploring the Inquisitor hideout.>>93806494I was giving it a compliment because it was very nicely laid out.
>>93769199>For now, I'm just curious about what people think about it.I've never read one of brando bobando's books, I tried to listen to this faggot's video about it while driving and about ten minutes in my eyes glazed over and I almost crashed. AFAICT there's no reason to look into this if you aren't goatse for the setting.
>>93769199It seems to be a really good system to lure friends away from D&D by pretending it is like 5e or 5e inspired but is held back by how closely tied it is to the setting. How easy it is to do custom magic and other things outside current Cosmere will define how good it is go me overall.
>>93769199When are we getting the combat wheelchair for the system?
>>93769199Never read the books, but what's in the PDF and the character creation website looks pretty dope.I actually like the skill trees, the initiative, and the multiple defenses system.I read somewhere that the developers of the system will eventually release a system agnostic OGL version, and that sounds far more interesting to me than this Sanderson specific incarnation.
Why does the Sanderson crowd put down so much fucking money on crowdfunding?
>>93769199I belice Sando's settings are awesome, his prose high-school tier, and that currently his stories are ruined by Marvel-tier bullcrap and expanded universo nonsense. BUT his early series had a heart and were genuinely fun to read.
>>93806164Avid reader here. So he's like a Dan Brown or these books people buy specifically to read at the beach. That explains a lot actually. Thank you.>>93806350Happy that you like it. For me personally I feel he just takes too long to say too little.
>>93807837I would say his works are way above Dan Brown because he actually foreshadows things instead of pulling things out of his ass. He also doesn't make up a bunch of shit about historical organizations and events and then claim that he researched the subject thoroughly.
>>93807837I don't think Dan Brown can write a character arc to save his own life and he's like the patient zero for the popularization of token Hollywood love interests that can be cut out with nothing lost. BrandoSando's prose is nothing impressive and his world building is entertaining instead of good, but he is a very solid choice for comfort reading and power system autisming without needing to dive into shit like RoyalRoad progfantasy. He's fun without being actively brainrotting.
>>93769199I think the books are very overrated (although i have enjoyed them) but the setting is prime for a tabletop rpg
>>93769199Since Sel/Elantris is confirmed to be the next installment after Mistborn, what other Cosmere worlds/magic systems do you hope to see next? I’m really looking forward to seeing Nalthis and Awakening myself.
>>93807499they're the WotC slop pigs of fantasy literature
>>93805904Szeths highspren is distant. They've had like... one on-screen conversation?I feel like the most annoying spren to have would be a cryptic. The least? In my head peakspren would be the most pleasant. You know they'd be like those big 6 foot tall muscular pacific island/Tongan/Maori dudes. Ones that look real big and mean but then come up to you like "What's up brother, do you want to come to church with us on Sunday? I got nothing but love and kindness in my heart." In that high pitched singsong voice.
>>93792937Naw I liked Shallan in book 1 and 2, it wasn’t until book 3 where they shoehorned in bipolar disorder out from left field that she turned into PC progressive brownie point slop. For kaladin it’s kinda the same, it’s like starting in book 3 they just hard reset all his character growth like it never even happened. And they turned his little Shinji syndrome way the fuck up. So frustrating.
>>93813834>I feel like the most annoying spren to have would be a cryptic. They're happy little autists
>>93769199What do you think of the inclusion of the plot dice, or the design of the special liquid-core dice that look like spheres of Stormlight?
>>93815192I actually really like the idea of the plot die. It adds a sense of urgency to the game when combined with the plot cards without having to really crunch in game time. Even without that, it's still better than "NATTY 20!!!! OH FUCK A 1 I'M DEAD!!!"
>>93769916>Even on the official pages for it I can't see any official endorsement by Sanderson or a sign that he's at all involved with the effortThere's a few livestreams and videos on his Youtube. He's using this project to canonize large swathes of information, like oaths for all the offscreen Orders and what half of the Feruchemy abilities actually do.
>>93813834>Szeths highspren is distant. They've had like... one on-screen conversation?Their entire order of Radiants is also lawful stupid to the extreme, and apparantly so are they. I think they're also said to be disliked by others sprens, thought that doesn't mean much.
>>93815192I think the plot die is great because of how it simultaneously fixes players succeeding on all rolls and having no challenge to them, and also the feeling of failing a roll meaning nothing happened. Having the negative effect also boost your roll so that you're more often to succeed but then something else happens to cause a new problem lets you keep throwing interesting curveballs into the story without it ever feeling contrived or asspulled because it's based on mechanics
>>93813889Nigga how bad is your reading comprehension that you didn't see both of those coming.
>>93815192The liquid core ones look based, I’m going to get them as an add-on!
>>93769199What are some potential campaigns that you’ve come up with or would like to do? I’d like to see a Singer that’s bonded with a spren like a certain Radiant we know, trying to escape the Singer army without the Fused catching on.
>>93816906Cause book 2 literally ends with them overcoming their ordeal and challenge in the hero’s journey. It ends on a height note of victory both both characters.
>>93824026The ordeal Kaladin overcomes is letting his own biases keep him from protecting people, but the climax does nothing about him being terrified of losing the people he is trying to protect, and in fact his triumph just makes it worse because he now has even more people he doesn't want to see die on both sides of the conflict. And with Shallan it ends with her going "yeah I can totally keep up this charade living a double life", which is still incredibly naive but also separate from her legitimate work to discover Uritheru.
>>93824221Kinda the big part of the 3rd book where he knew the words but couldn't bring himself to admit that he couldn't save everyone. The irony was that he didn't have to because that's when Chadanar did his thing, and I think that kinda fed into his depression in the 4th book.
>>93769199I played on the alpha and beta tests. I'm not impressed. It's a cludge of some of the worst game design elements there are IMO.
>>93813695Not really. He has shown to deliver a product at high enough level to deserve it. Get the D&D brainrot out of your fucking skull anon.
>>93769199Literally who? And can I adapt this system for other settings? If no, then why should I care?
>>93815192The liquid cores look really nice and I've always been a mark for plot dice mechanics that allow you to spice up gameplay with mechanical backing.
>>93813889>she turned into PC progressive brownie point slop.I've found the whole concept of the girl creating tulpas to handle every situation she couldn't or didn't want to handle herself only for it to blow in her face was pretty fun and interesting, personally. Certainly more enjoyable than Kaladin dealing with the same darkness inside for four books in a row. Maybe Adolin should have fucked him too, Syl and Shallan might even have liked it.
>>93825863I think the main problem is the writing for it. Especially in the later books, Dawnshard and Rhythm of War, the descriptions and thoughts regarding anyone with a disability or mental health condition is sterilized into being the generally accepted version, rather than the character's version of it
>>93824221No Kaladin’s journey was that he is literally a fucking slave forced into the most miserable of circumstances and rolls, but he and his friends fight their way to freedom. Summoning her shard blade to cut the rock, saving them both in the cavern, was the climax for Shallan, overcoming her past trauma and self doubt. But s also there is a pretty big fucking step between “I’m going to live a town faced life of espionage” and “hurr durr I’m bipolar now!”. That step never happened in the books, one page it was there the next Shallan was a schitzo.I’m still salty they killed off Eshonai, only to replace her with a whinier bitchier version. Eshonai was my favorite character.
>>93826642It’s almost as off Brandon went on tumbler and saw all the “wow this is literally me” and decided he liked printing money.
>>93825863One little Shinji (Kaladin) was enough. But I will agree that recycling his growth arc over and over, all while pretending the stuff before didn’t happen, was grueling. They even tried to taint Adolin with some of it in book 4.
>>93828246I don't some of how they're written in Book 4, but this is the most shallow fucking reading of Shallan imaginable holy shit. Nothing about that scene actually resolved anything about Shallan's issues, it was just the first time she had it in her to share her trauma and have someone who could empathize with the depths of dark depression she felt. That's not the fucking resolution of a character arc, that's the end of the prologue of one.
>>93769199I liked the book series until he went too hard on the SJW slop in the last books, the political messaging just completely took me out of the story.
>>93822932Possibly something involving average soldiers without everyone immediatly turning into Radiants. The basic troopers have it fucking awful, maybe even worse than imperial guardsmen holy shit>they have a Shardbearer? You're dead, and so is everyone around you, the platoon behind yours and probably your entire regiment>they have regals?Try pissing in their general direction, but you're probably>they have fused/radiants?lol, lmaoShardblades are straight up horrifying, I'm almost glad there is some sort of comeuppance coming for sprens for this.
>>93769199What do you think of the official art in the RPG?
>>93816575I'd fluff my guy to be a Skybreaker but not one of Nales Skybreakers.I do like the character of Nale as a villain, but as a leader? Nah.I just want my magic Sherlock Holmes. My highspren would also be a lot more like Sig's than Szeths. Perhaps even stealing that whole "The spren things he's the Knight and the Radiant is his squire" dynamic.
>>93776689She is a literal schizophrenic and different personas are more in control in this book, as a source of conflict. Anon is being a chud. I found it kind of boring as execution but certainly an interesting and ambitious choice by Brando Sando.
>>93769199Who’s your favorite Cosmere main character(s) that you’d like to see your PCs interact with and why? For me it’s Vin, since she introduced me to the Cosmere.
>>93837590I already play Hoid-like characters anyway, so he's a shoe in for a cameo beyond his contractual obligation to appear in every campaign
>>93836577I know, I've read the books too. I'm merely confused at how one could ever describe Shallan as a bull dyke. Or any of her personas, really.
>>93837590Shallan for her creative prowess and different personas.
>>93837590MeLaan would be cool to have in a campaign.
