There are few positive to-hit roll modifiers in the game. There are a bunch of things that reduce your chances, but very few that can improve them. As a former GURPS player (as are all GURPS players, but I digress), I can confirm the tradition continues - a character gets no active defense roll if attacked from the rear. And then there's Munchkin, where a large part of the game is stabbing your opponents in the back.

For all the mistique on being complex gurps has, it really is just "roll 3d6 vs target number, roll d6+mods for damage" in actual play.All the complexity is on creating characters, which, to be fair, is a big hurdle.It took me 6 hours yesterday to make characters for my next campaign with two buddies.

Ironically, two games set in the "Current Year," Technomancer and Madness Dossier, capture that old school mysticism and agent wisdom well despite technomancer literally being about magic assembly lines. There's just enough "lol I dunno" going on with the fae; the only thing missing is that they were too pussy to have the pagan gods and God actually show up, but it's an RPG so you can just do that yourself.
