I'm in an ice moodWhat class/subclass should I pick if I want to make Frozen my personality? Also, gotta say, it guts me that my favorite class (Cleric) doesn't have an Ice Domain.
>>94388508I'd give you the link to a suicide hotline but I need you to do the opposite of what they recommend, slopposter.
>>94388528homebrew it then
>>94388528None. Ice spells suck horse cock. Cone of Cold is the only halfway decent one, and that's because of an exploit. If you're really set on this, pick one of the quintillion fire-themed casters and just ask your DM if you can replace the word "fire" with "cold" in all of your class features and spells.
>get rescued by a noble lady knight>takes off helmet>reveals that it was a dr*whow would you react?
>>94388611She's wearing a lot of armor for an Eilistraean
>>94388611I pay for the entire cost of pizza that night to let the DM I appreciate him inserting my fetishes into the game.
>>94388611>"wow its so great they let you people become knights now"
>>94388611Cuwute. I'd take her home and make her my slave because her people are racially into CBT.
>>94388611>”How the fuck do you get that thing over the ears?”
>DM has introduced large and huge weapons>require 20 str and 16/18+dex>can only move half speed, cannot move after attacking>large are double dice, huge are triple>all large+ weapons also have reach>all are two-handed for us small boys>be paladin>20 str, 16 dexHow good are these?
>>94388708If they're ranged weapons they're worth, if they're melee weapons then they're shit. Unless you're a mounted paladin
>>94388726Melee weapons only. I am usually a mounted paladin on a pegasus. We also have a homebrew Find Ancient Steed that lets you summon a trex, huge giant crab or a mammoth.
>>94388738Then that should be fine if your mount can make up for the speed debuff, go for it
>>94388708Please call your DM a retard and tell him to never ever homebrew again.
>>94388708>can only move half speedSigh. Mobility is always an issue, to the point where a 30 ft. move melee martial is an absolute joke at tier 3 and 4 (imo). While you could stomach stopping after attacking, this implementation is just bad. Time to look for Boots of Springing & Striding. The damage for a large isa bout an extra 7 or 4.5, which equates to some magical items. You're not being clear about the distinction between large and huge, so idk about that.
>>94388787Large weapons are double regular dice and require 20 str, 16 dex. Huge weapons are triple regular dice and require 20 str, 18 dex.
>>94388806The dexterity requirement is pants on head. Not negating movement penalties through strength is also pants on head. You could find ways to grow large, like the Enlarge spell. There's no reason that wouldn't work either.
>>94388823Being large or huge would let you use them as normal.
>>94388832Just the idea that wielding a large greatsword slows a 20 strength character is absurd. It's 48 pounds (6 pound x8), which is 21 kg. While unwieldly, and should simply grant disadvantage on attacks, is not burdensome by any stretch of the imagination to simply carry.
>>94388508Someone posted a DnD Beyond rip pdf they found a couple threads back
>>94385982I'd give it to Battle Smith only as a subclass thing probably, Alchemist and Artillerist don't really focus on weapons very much, and Armorer has its own that it focuses on. Thunder Gauntlets even have something adjacent to Sap built in. Maybe give something similar to one of the Masteries to the Lightning Launcher, maybe Graze, dealing a little damage even on a miss with Lightning seems thematic to me, like the air around them is static charged hit or miss

I always find it weird how thematically disconnected the Bard's abilities are with some of its subclasses. I get the College of Swords is suppose to invoke some kind of poncy, rapier wielding fop but being a swashbuckler is something that can't and shouldn't be pinned down by any one character class.Regardless, the Bard should be retooled to really lean into music magic as a thing.
>>94390167Agreed. I played a swords bard myself and ended up re flavoring most of her spells as psionic abilities because, even though i was playing a bard, very little of it felt tied to music in any way.
>>94390221I've been deeply contemplating psionic classes and find that Ardent would make a perfect psionic bard class. Massive retooling on the thematics would be necessary seeing as original Ardent was just a psionic cleric.
>>94390167i honestly just hate the bard. its always cringy. always. i´ve never seen a bard and thought "what a great character!"
>>94390280What about this one?
>>94390298
>>94390307>Bard can kill via sight aloneAnd some people think they're a bad class.
>>94390280I just accept the idea of Bard being a cosplay class.
>>94390324its not that they are bad. i even find them mechanically interesting (less in '24 because fuck those magical secrets changes)in terms of mechanics i like a lot of bard classes, bardic inspiration fucks, healing is always nice etc. but someone casting via music is cringe as fuck, thats why you see all these "ohnonono not all bards do that, some whisper and some eat swords and do taro cards or whatever" attempts. i also do not like their whole place in the spectrum of spellcasters. druids, palas/clerics, sorcerors, warlocks, artificers and wizards all have a explanation how they know about magic/can use it. bards are just some "learned along the way" bullshit with these colleges. especially with '24 trying to give their school-system a lot more weight with this "ancient god language" bullshit, wich just begs the questions why wizards are not all over that shit.they occupy a similar spot as orks in 40k with their "it just works" logic, or lack of logic.
>>94390373To be fair, the lore behind why the classes cast the way they do has always been shit. The Warlock and Druid being truly pathetic considering Warlocks and Druids could be Cleric-lite and the idea of learning arcane magic from some higher power versus college isn't all that convincing and seems like just as much a background as saying coming from a line of dragon fuckers makes you a first rate magic user.
>>94390348>Bard as the cosplay class>Not Warlocks with Fey or Sex Demons or Angel Patrons and literal magical-girl transformations.
>>94390221>>94390167I honestly prefer it that Bards are always tied to music- their powers come from tugging at the Words of Creation. I view them more like Onomancers who's focus is tied to words, tone, infliction, pronunciation, and intent.Music or Instruments or Performance is one type of way in which they could tap into the Words of Creation- but it is not their only method to do so.You can create a Bard who has no instrument, no performance or artistic skills and they just strictly focus on magic words, phrases, and lore.
>>94390499>that Bards are always"That Bards aren't always tied to music" is what I meant to say.
>>94390493I don't deny the Warlock being the magical girl class (unique when you consider Paizo made a literal magical girl class, but I digress). I just think the Warlock as a class concept is shit. It's a wizard that acts like cleric with people excusing it as being a sugar baby brat to the cleric's submissive slam pig slave.
I need some advice.I'm currently DMing for a campaign with a lot of mystery solving.Right now I'm basically writing it using logic gates, just wanted some input on how you guys do your preparation for mystery-solving games.
>>94390499Seeing as they did introduce the idea of Words of Creation and Dark Speech, it made me think of Destiny's Hive who have the idea of the Death Song. The bard should definitely lean farm more into music word magic and, even as lame as it sounds, something like the Word Devil from Black Clover should be a design inspiration.
>>94390612Working around how they are going to get the information they need is obviously going to be a big part of it. You'll also need to come to terms that you may not come up with something so clever that it can't be simply intuited so I suppose you can set a certain threshold of how they come to their conclusions and decisions and defend that when put under scrutiny assuming they're not going to just murder hobo the BBEG anyways.
>Classes are meant to support a certain type of gameplay, for example having access to a wide variety of spells, but requiring discovering them through exploration and interaction with the world for the case of wizards. They are not meant to convey any rigid flavor or specific source of power. Work with your DM to determine how exactly your character has acquired his powers and continues to gain them as they level up, within the mechanical constraints of the class you chose. For example, in place of a deity, you could decide your cleric character receives his powers from an ideal, the small spirits present in everyday objects, or the collective spiritual power of his community. Similarly, a bard could sing the words of creation altering reality, invoke the power of his warrior ancestors through battle song, or receive magical power from a fey muse. Feel free to use or ignore the flavor suggestions included in the description of classes. There I fixed it for the rawlets. Just pretend the book says this (it should)
>>94390636The idea is that I give evidence(written document, statement from a witness, dead body found somewhere), if they act on it go to next step, if they don't repeat giving evidence until they act on it.Something likeif A makes them do B: continueIf A makes them do C: repeat AThere's some finer variations but it roughly comes down to giving them information until they act on it, with a final straw of "while you guys were in the dark, something happened that makes an NPC all but spell it out for you"Hopefully the information I give is good enough to not make them loop around to the point where I need a big happening like "yeah someone who looks like X NPC just murdered someone and ran"
>>94390539On that, we agree. Then again I'm a turbo-autist who thinks the game would be better if the classes wee just cut down to Fighting Man, Magic Man, Sneaky Man, and Holy Man.
>>94390499Let Bards swap their Instrument Proficiencies with Language proficiencies!
>>94390678As I've grown older I've become increasingly reductionist. I enjoy options but I want those options to be meaningful and D&D doesn't do that. Like, okay, having Barbarian is cool and all but what about rage makes it something tied exclusivly to nature when you don't even bother to put some meat on the lore of Primal beside what exists in individual splats.>>94390669I think using a set-up like that, you should be willing to let your PCs fuck themselves into a corner following bad conclusions.
>>94390612>>94390669If you want your players to come to a particular conclusion, give them three clues minimum. They'll miss the first and dismiss the second, but the third will cause them to make some absurd leap of logic that will (somehow) put them on the right track.
>>94390703>>94390747Thanks for the input. This should make this more smooth.
>>94390690Languages are useless as fuck. Aside from Abyssal and MAYBE Draconic a few times, that shit never comes up in games... and when it does there's always that jackass casterfag in the party who has the that universal translation spell that just lets you understand all languages anyway.
>>94390896Then Outsider languages should be immune to those kinds of spells. You'd think some wizard fag shouldn't be able to easily touch the realm of the divine let alone cast a simple translation spell and be done with it. But, this is D&D we're talking about so no one ever thinks to do that, or they do it badly just like how they fucked up the psionic/magic interaction (even though I'm an advocate of just making psionics a regular part of all magic systems instead of its own thing).
>>94390935Aren't they languages like any other though? It isn't Dark Speech where the words themselves have power. You could learn Celestial without "touching the divine".
>>94390970I would think this would be a good occasion to pair down most of the special languages and really lean into the whole Supernal/Dark Speech thing and make Bard an innately divine class while still roleplaying as other classes.
>>94390896Languages i'd say are at least more useful than instruments.
>>94390896There's always that one DM who thinks he's clever by having a character speak in Elven, but then like half the party knows Elven anyway despite having no justified backstory reason for it, because their background just gave them an extra language they had to put SOMEWHERE and elves are popular.
>>94390641This prose is genuinely beautiful. I literally believed that was lifted straight from the PHB of one of the other core rulebooks. You have a keen understanding of published WotC material.

>>94391623Theater kids are mad at jocks for being bullied in high school almost 20 years ago.
>>94390499Never thought of bards as Truenamers before.
>>94391640It was in the PHB a decade ago.
>>94391673>Truenamers were students of truespeak, a language that they believed to undergirt all of creation. By speaking aloud utterances in the language, they were capable of effecting magical changes in the world around them.>Bards claimed that the multiverse was spoken into existence and shaped by the words of the gods, which resounded throughout reality even eons later. By this interpretation, bardic music was an attempt to harness the echoes of the primordial Words of Creation and subtly weave them into magical powers. They feel pretty close.
>>94391684I assume you mean for Backgrounds? I don't believe that worked for classes.
champion should be able to improves its crit range instead of choosing a feat or an ASI, in addition to the two improvements already
>>94388611>>94388631I want to make an Eilistraean Paladin so fucking bad, but I can't think of anything that works.>Redeemer Paladin obviously the most on-point class identity thematically>But heavy armor doesn't fit at all aesthetically, neither does Redemption tankmaxxing with a shield>Multiclass to work it into a Longsword only build?>Bard is CHA, maybe that works>Dance Bard is right thematically but trash mechanically>Swordsbard is kind of there mechanically and thematically but also is a gimped Valorbard with only a Scimitar>Also requires Dex>Maybe Warlock with Pact weapon?>thematically makes no sense>Wizard for Bladesinging? That's on point>But Bladesinger is all Int and spells and can't even use Versatile on a Longsword without ruining themselves>Ranger?>Melee Hunter Ranger? Idea is right, plus you can spread Sap everywhere>Hunter's mark slave though, and get nothing to do with the moon or dance>Maybe with a Lunar Sorcerer multiclass for Moon spells? It's all infuriating. In order to do the fantasy fully, or have a good kit, you'd need features from half the fucking classes in the game.>Redemption Paladin base theme>Hunter Ranger features to cover Hunter aesthetic>Mash Bladesinger/Swordsbard into a feature that doesn't sudoku itself to use two hands>Lunar Sorcerer moon switching mechanics with a mix of Paladin, Ranger, and Cleric spell listsIt's all an absolute fucking nightmare of conflicting class and subclass identities.
>>94391890Devoltion PAM/GWM paladin that dances with a halberd wow that was hard
>>94391853champion should be part of baseline fighter, just like battlemaster
>>94391741College of Creation, College of Lore, or College of Eloquence fit this theme the best. If you can swap out those Instrument Profs with Language profs:>The Words of Creation were fragments of the precursor of the Celestial language. This precursor language, known as Supernal, was said to be the tongue of the gods themselves>Bards believe the cosmos is a work of art-the creation of the first dragons and gods. And among dragonborn, the Song of Creation is revered, for legends portray Bahamut and Tiamat-the greatest of dragons-as two of the song's first singers.Celestial & Draconic seem quite fitting. You could add Infernal too I suppose.
>>94391900>not Redemption>a fucking GLAIVELorelet or trolling.
>>94391938redemption/paladin in general sucks ass for eilistrae
>>94391959How can Redemption Paladin possibly suck when her thing is being the redemption goddess? You can argue the spells or features aren't right, but the theme of the class is perfect.Of course it's not JUST redemption though, which is the problem.>Redemption>Dance>Song>The Moon/Moonlight>Life>Martial prowess specifically with the Longsword>Nature>HuntingHer portfolio is spread across half the classes. Just leave out Warlock, Rogue, Monk, Barbarian, and Artificer.
>>94391996redemption is not one of her domains or associated things. She's a drow goddess of Beauty, Dance, Freedom, Hunting, Moonlight, Song, and Swordwork; just because she isn't an evil god doesn't automatically make her a redemption god.
>>94392069Basically, her thing is about showing the Drow a better path than following her mother's poisonous ways.
>>94392069>just because she isn't an evil god doesn't automatically make her a redemption god.Yes, but she is a redemption god. The whole point of everything she's ever done is offering redemption to the Drow - Se left the Seldarine and went with them during the fall in order to always offer them a second chance. She even made up with Vhaeraun after he tried to assassinate her.
I'm making a new character for a short campaign, levels 1-8. We're using only stuff from the 2024 PHB. Anything cool I should try out? I was going to do Monk, but someone else already picked one so I didn't want to double up.
>>94392178Just make any DW archetype and laugh in four attacks at level 5.
How might I RP knowing of a magical spell's existence? I.e. Bless, Fireball, or Longstrider without actually having encountered it in person before? What sort of precedence is there for this sort of thing? Do I just make up some vaguely plausible scenario that might've happened where one of them might've been used?
>>94392215Is your setting high magic? If so, maybe you just know about all spells under a certain spell levelIf it's a low magic setting then maybe you've read about it or heard someone else tell a tale about some magic user casting those spells.
>>94392200DW?
>>94392244nta but think about what mechanic or feature could allow you to get 4 attacks at level 5
>>94391996Bladesinger
>>94392262Gloomstalker Ranger or Echo Knight with PAM / XBE / TWF is the only thing I can think of to get 4 attacks. Two from Extra Attack, one bonus action attack from the feat or two weapon fighting, and then one additional attack from the subclass features.
>>94392244Dual Wielder. The updated Dual Wielder feat + the Light Property + Nick Mastery lets you attack 4 times at level 5. If you want to get really memey you could two weapon fight while equiping a shield by swapping weapons once per turn thus making it possible to benefit from both TWF Fighting Style and Dueling Fighting Style.
>>94392239Being transparent, I'm trying to optimize a bit more than we are currently. I am a halfling, and nigh-exclusively fight in melee. I would like to be able to have Darkvision and Longstronger, but I also don't want to be a huge fag about it and just start telling people what to do or whatever. I also fully expect to be, and would be fine with, being shut down.
>>94392239>>94392299>didn't even answer the questionForgotten realms. We're doing a Neverwinter region-based campaign that should stop at or around level 10.
>DM implements a hard cap of level 5 to any caster class for the next campaign5e really is filled with creatively bankrupt losers who can't roleplay their way out of an improv club in a special needs school
>>94392290I see. That would be 1d6+4 for each attack without the Dueling thing. Assuming 65% hit chance, that's 5.05 damage per attack for 20.2 expected DPR. Explain how the Dueling thing works, because that doesn't sound intentional. If it works though, it bumps the DPR up to 25.4.GWM would be 2d6+4+3 on your main attack action, resulting in 9.45 damage per attack at the same hit chance, for 18.9 DPR. If you get the bonus action attack, you add another attack of 2d6+4 becasue GWM doesn't add damage to the bonus action for some reason, but it bumps your DPR up to 26.4 if you get it.Damage is pretty close off of just those. Different class features play differently with it, but the DW build seems pretty good with Hunter's Mark or Hex bumping your DPR up to 22.5 on rounds where you apply Hunter Mark / Hex and an even 30 if you get a round with it fully applied on the same target.
>>94392329>Assuming 65% hit chance, that's 5.05 damage per attack for 20.2 expected DPR. You could also have one weapon that's got the Vex Mastery for advantage.>Explain how the Dueling thing works, because that doesn't sound intentional. If it works though, it bumps the DPR up to 25.4.Right. So, the Dueling Fighting Style Feat says:>When you're holding a Melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon. The Light property says:>When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don't add your ability modifier to the extra attack's damage unless that modifier is negative. The new rules on Equipping and Unequipping weapons reads:>Equipping and Unequipping Weapons. You can either equip or unequip one weapon when you make an attack as part of this action. You do so either before or after the attack. If you equip a weapon before an attack, you don't need to use it for that attack. Equipping a weapon includes drawing it from a sheath or picking it up. Unequipping a weapon includes sheathing, stowing, or dropping it.All of that together means you can have a Shield in one hand and your Shortsword or Scimitar in the other, attack with that weapon, then unequip that weapon, then for your second attack draw your second Shortsword or Scimitar and attack with that weapon. Then you can use the Light Property + Nick Mastery (From Scimitar) to attack again with the same weapon, then you can use your Bonus Action to use Dual Wielder to attack one more time. You get to add dueling because you don't have another weapon in your hand. 1/2
>>94392366If you want to get REALLY RAW on it- you don't need to wield or attack with the Scimitar in the first place to use the Nick Mastery and you can just stick to using the Shortsword or Handaxe and instead just choose both Shortsword/Handaxe and the Scimitar/Dagger as weapon masteries. This is because nowhere on the Nick Mastery does it say that you must make the Light attack with the Nick weapon. In fact, what the rules do say is all you need to use the Mastery property is a feature that lets you use it.>Mastery. Each weapon has a mastery property, which is defined in the "Mastery Properties" section later in this chapter. To use that property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.>Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.So RAW, you could use two Shortswords and still benefit from the Nick Mastery.
>>94392381Any non-retarded DM would never allow that RAW
>>94392418ill be 100% honest with you chief, im kind of a huge fag and would never allow anyone to dual wield weapons of the same type or purpose. you can have a hand crossbow and an axe or perhaps a casting tool and a sword but never two swords or whatever stereotypical mmo faggotry is popular these days
>>94392418There's a chance this might be RAW & RAI- this whole thing has been pretty well known since 2024 D&D came out and they haven't errata'd it yet on D&D Beyond despite errataing other stuff. It's not a hard Errata to make either as all the other Weapon Masteries say something to the effect of: "With this weapon">Push. If you hit a creature with this weapon...>Graze. If your attack roll with this weapon...>Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon...>Slow. If you hit a creature with this weapon...>Cleave. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon...>Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon..>Vex. If you hit a creature with this weapon...All they need to do is add "with this weapon" after the "attack of the Light property" part.
>>94392366>>94392381I see. This isn't relevant at level 5 of course because we'll only have the one fighting style, but it's a decent DPR bump later. Would probably flavor this as a sword juggler or something like that.
>>94392427You're right you are a huge fag.
>>94388557Sick art, what's the source? Also yeah 5e has a lot of variety in fire spells but Ice? Water? Not as much.
>>94392442Champion Fighter could do that at level 7 so you don't have to burn a ASI on the other Fighting Style you didn't get. But yeah it wouldn't be at level 5. Its just a nice notch on the Champion's belt that they can do it a little easier than others.
>>94392457>Sick art, what's the source?Octopath Traveler.
>>94392464Cheers.
>>94392459Why would anyone run champion though? It's literally the weakest, most barebones subclass in the entire game
>>94392528Champion's level 10 feature got juiced pretty hard. It gives you Heroic Inspiration every turn. I would still run the other subclasses first, but Champion really isn't that bad anymore.
>>94392528If you can do the Nick thing with Vex weapons- you generate consistent advantage making that 19 Critical hit range show up a little more often which also gives you some free movement- and they buffed it so you've got advantage on Initiative at level 3. The extra Fighting Style makes this easier to do without needing to dip into your feat pool. Level 10 Champion is fantastic. You generate a Heroic Inspiration at the start of each of your turns which can be used for saves. Level 15 is solid and works wonders with Studied Attacks + Vex. Level 18 is still great for well.. Surviving. I'd still play a Battle Master because BM got some nice buffs, but Champion isn't nearly as bad as it was before.
>>94392539>>94392552I hope they give the same treatment to Arcane Archer in a future book.
>>94392558I hope so too. Give us something that would make me want to use it over playing a Battle Master Archer cuz, its tough sell when Battle Masters are able to get AC boosts or Movement with Evasive Footwork or Lunging Attack. They even get to do it at will at level 15.
>>94392427Virtually every martial art that uses dual weapons has paired weapons of the same type so you definitely are a huge fag
>>94392653I think asymmetrical dual weapons is really fucking cool conceptually. Club and Scimitar is pure kino.
>>94392528It is the tutorial class for new players, or veteran players who don't want to have to keep track of anything. Sometimes it's OK to have a simple low-effort class like that.
>>94392679It's fine, but that's no reason to shit on dual hatchets or masses of daggers
>>94392700Dual hatchets and daggers are also crisp. It's dual swords that's cringe.
>>94392718Why?
>>94392558>>94392564There's no reason you shouldn't be able to just cast one arcane shot per turn. Charges on the arrow is dumb.
Giving every spellcaster their own Spirit Guardians was a mistake.
>>94392805I don't have a problem with it. but I do have a problem with them making those spells way stronger than they were/ 2014 Spirit Guardians was powerful for sure, but not absurdly powerful this new one is even stronger due to how easy it is to abuse which makes it crazy strong.
>>94392881It's crazy that they removed summoning due to it being unfun only to replace it with this far more degenerate "pass the druid" play style.
>>94392907The Summon spells are still in the game, they just don't have mass summoning spells now- unless you want to count Animate Dead or Animate Objects. There's other strong play styles that stayed in like Spike Growth and that did get stronger too. Spike Growth + Goliath Monk with Grappler can do some insane damage.
>>94392427>huge fag>won't allow dual wielding two swordsAt least you're honest. It's not good to be that controlling.
>>94392923The conjure spells were funny. It abused the CR system, and finding statblocks for it can be an issue. There's still Summon Greater Demon, they better not touch it. The mass summons were cancer, and stupidly broken. It had flaws, but still warps the game around them. Tasha's summons are efficient, so like them for that. The 1-minute version without concentration is also funny for draconic sorcerer and GOO warlock. Think Animate Obj. was nerfed. Dealing 65 avg. damage with +8 was skewed. Meanwhile, Animate Dead is clumsy. It's not great, nor efficient, but if you get the ball rolling you can theoretically overwhelm some encounters with them. It's can be a logistical nightmare to run, and then ends up being more hassle than it's worth in terms of spell slots and patience.
I want to create a kingdom/country in my setting which is ruled by a pair of silver dragons. My current idea is that they've been in power for hundreds of years. Would adult or ancient be a better choice for them? I'm leaning towards ancient, but I'm concerned that if they're THAT powerful, then there won't be many things powerful enough to actually threaten their rule. Thoughts?
>>94393030I always enjoy being a walking logistical nightmare.Especially when I arbitrarily decide not to bring any undead into encounters the DM expected us to have 50 support skeletons for and the DM has an existential meltdown of quickly rebalancing his encounters.
>DM is notoriously fickle with good magic items and weapons (still was working with +1s by the end of a level 14 campaign)>DM starts the new campaign by banning Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Master>Literally all 6 of us go caster>Every combat has been a breeze>DM makes custom monster with legendary actions, resistance to everything but radiant and necrotic, and a focus on sleep and teleportation>We kill it in 2 rounds by spamming guiding boltI love being a player lol

>>94392283>>94392290You don't need Dual Wielder to get four attacks, it just allows you to make your fourth attack with a non-light weapon.
>>94393483>Bans two key feats for martials>No martialsTopkek. Got what he fucking deserved.
>>94393845This has been discussed to death, and somehow you got it wrong. Do tell what you think gives you a 4th attack outside of Dual Wielder, because Nick and Light gives you the 3rd as part of the Attack Action.
>>94393713>working 40 hours a week, or 8 hours a day>sleeping 5 hours a nightThe fuck are you filling up the other eleven hours of your day with? Hell, let’s say three of those hours go to meals. That’s still a full workday every day unaccounted for.
>>94393853If you have an extra attack feature, you can proc the Light attack after your Nick attack with the second attack of your extra attack. No, it doesn't matter that you only took the Attack action once - All Light says is that you must have taken that action once on your turn, and made an attack. Taking the Attack action and making an attack are two distinct things. Similarly, the Light property isn't limited to once per turn like with Nick, you can trigger it at any time after making an attack so long as you have a free bonus action.
>>94393907>Similarly, the Light property isn't limited to once per turn Yes it is. It says you can make ONE extra attack. Not AN extra attack.

Clean your living space, start greeting people, try to improve at your job, make plans for the future, etc. Un-fucking yourself is not easy, and maybe you won't fully get there, but these things add up. Maybe then you'll allow yourself the time to play D&D again.
Guys, i'm reading this guidelines to create spells when i see this mentioned: "10 feet height is assumed for cones, lines and cylinders".Could someone pls point out where this is from?
>>94393953With 6 levels of rogue, sure
>>94393901I work 9 hrs and plus a half hour unpaid lunch, 1 hours of commuting, and a half hour to get ready in the morning. Then it takes me time to do various bullshit and cook dinner and also see my gf several nights a week and other stupid shit. The problem is that I can't just sit down and force myself to be creative. That's what I do right now and it technically works but it always feels rushed and forced and I just don't have the same ideas anymore.
>>94393934It says you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. If you use Nick, you don't make an extra attack as a Bonus Action, meaning you're still free to make a Light attack.A Nick attack is not the same as a Light attack. Especially since with Nick, you can actually make that attack with the same Light weapon, if you choose to do so.Think about all of this in relation to Dual Wielder for a second. It's a half-feat, meaning it gives you it's feature as well as an ability score increase. It also allows you to use more than Light weapons to make an extra attack. If your interpretation is correct, than Dual Wielder is far and away the strongest feat in the game. Because for the price of one feat at level 4, any class can get a number of melee attacks equivalent to an 11th level Fighter feature. Even a dual-wielding Fighter at 5th level could still only make three attacks if they don't take Dual Wielder, while a Rogue could do the same thing one level earlier while also getting a stat investment, on top of being able to use a non-Light weapon in their bonus attack. It's busted. On the other hand, if we see that the Nick attack and Light attack are distinct, the Fighter and the Rogue can both start the game making two attacks per round dual wielding Light weapons, the Rogue can get a superior three at level 4 with Dual Wielder, and then the Fighter can surpass that at level 5 with four attacks, rather than only meeting what the Rogue could already do. If not, the Fighter would be equal with the Rogue until level fucking 11, when they finally pull ahead with one more attack.Basically all of this is to say that under your reading, Dual Wielder is absolutely busted and a must-pick for any martial going two-weapon fighting, otherwise they can get beat out by much less fighting-focused classes. To say nothing of fucking Warlock, which with Dual Wielder is actually equal with a non-DW Fighter until level goddamn 20.
>>94394051Wait, what is this from? This is somehow new to me. >>94394112>9 hrsOkay, so that’s a 45-hour workweek. We’re down to seven hours unaccounted for per day.>half hour unpaid lunch>time to […] cook dinnerAlready had that in the three-hour estimate. Unless it somehow takes you two full hours to prepare dinner.>1 hours of commuting, and a half hour to get ready in the morningAssuming it’s 1 hour each way, total 2.5 hours. Still 4.5 hours per day.>and also see my gf several nights a week and other stupid shitIf you’re spending 4.5 hours PER DAY on seeing your girlfriend “and other stupid shit”, that’s absurd.>The problem is that I can't just sit down and force myself to be creative. No, the problem is that you’re shorting yourself on recovery time because you’re spending it on what you yourself describe as “stupid shit”. Two hours of driving each day is almost the perfect opportunity for campaign planning—sure, you’ll need to actually draw the maps and stat the encounters on the weekends, but you can figure out a lot about the game while you don’t have anything to distract you. But you’re completely dry on creative energy because you’re forcing yourself to run on fumes. You’re getting older. That’s inescapable. If you want to maintain your level of creativity, you have to accept that and work with it. You can’t fuck around until three in the morning and still be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by eight. The hours you’re working and the job environment have far less to do with your current issue than you seem to think.
>>94394176https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/1obnDfpU1acZR6JMT-mZmiATbOtxXR3JIZBp4jRvKBksMThis is from some guidelines on how to create spells, but my point is that it mentions 10 foot height as a standard for cylinders, cones and lines according to official rules, and that's what i want to know, where it comes from i can't find it?
>>94394143>A Nick attack is not the same as a Light attack. It literally is. The text of Nick is>When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. It is a modification to the Light attack, not its own separate thing.

You don't know what that drive is. If it's anything like even my half-hour one-way commutes, you can daydream a bit, sure, but you also have to, I dunno, pay attention to your driving and avoid the decrepit out-of-state fucks playing Mad Max because they're high and half-demented and tear across three lanes of traffic regularly. What, is he supposed to dictate it into a tape recorder? Great, you have plot and NPC ideas. Now for the remainder of the prep, which is, you know, the majority of the fucking prep in terms of maps, statblocks, tables, etc., which cannot be done during a commute unless it's a self-driving car. It's a shame to get older and burnt out, but you seem to have a very light understanding of how soul-crushing and time consuming that is, especially while trying to keep a relationship up for some joy, or at least physical solace. To the other anon, I feel you. I get it. This is a bit extreme, but he is right - you need to sleep, hard as it can be. And you need to find some small artistic outlet. You will go insane otherwise. Take a half hour a day to draw a map, read, something. But all the best, and rest.
>>94389855what site?
>>94394213Okay, so you make the Light attack as part of your attack action with Nick. What says you can't make another Light attack? Yes, the Light property says that when you use it, you make ONE attack, which you did. But nothing says you can only use the Light property once per turn. Nick itself, yes, but that is not part of the Light description at all.So, if you make another attack, and still have a free Bonus Action, why could you not make the Light attack again? Again, the prerequisites for making it are>Take the attack action>make an attack>have a bonus action availableThe first condition is always fulfilled after you take the action. With an extra attack feature, you've fulfilled the second condition by making an attack. And the third if fulfilled by having your bonus action available. So, because the Light property does not say you can only use it once per turn, you can use it again. In visual terms:>Attack with right weapon>Attack with left weapon (Nick)>Attack with right weapon (extra attack)>Attack with left weapon (Light attack)Makes sense to me.
>>94394204>HomebreweryAw, that's disappointing. Handy but homebrew. Ah well.As to the question, I can't find that. It's a solid assumption, but the only places I can find offhand that reference it at all is Pg. 204 of the PHB going over spell targeting areas, and Pg. 249 of the DMG about adjucating hits. Neither mention it directly, and you can kind of divine it from the AoE pictures in the PHB, kek. Otherwise I don't know, it may just be another homebrew assumption unless someone else sees it. This all assumes 2014 unless something got mentioned in 5.24's books.
>>94394264>Cleaning the house. Cleaning the bathroom. Grocery shopping so you have anything to eat for dinner. Laundry so you don't look homeless at work. Paying bills, mowing the lawn, all sorts of things Do you know what a “weekend” is? I mean, if he comes back and says he actually works a 63-hour week because he’s working 9 hours a day both Saturday and Sunday, fine, but we’re talking his weekly schedule and how he’s shorting himself on sleep because he’s trying to cram “stupid shit” into every evening.>to... maximize time for Elf game? No, to get the amount of sleep he needs to actually function. At no point in my post did I say he should be cutting things out of his life for D&D.>Are you psychotic? You don't know what that drive is.We’re talking ten hours over the course of a week. It doesn’t need to be high-efficiency planning, but you can connect a lot of dots with that time. Figure out the rough details, then jot a couple of quick notes when you get to your destination. It has a huge impact for something so small. It doesn’t even need to be highly productive or impactful—he’s complaining about having issues getting the creative juices flowing. If he ends up noodling over the campaign in that time and then scrapping it all, he’ll still be keeping his hand in creatively.>It's a shame to get older and burnt out, but you seem to have a very light understanding of how soul-crushing and time consuming that is, especially while trying to keep a relationship up for some joy, or at least physical solace.Mid-thirties, married, full-time job that routinely pushes 10-hour days four months out of the year. I do most of the cooking and other housework, though my husband makes a point of being the one to clean the bathrooms and take the dog out in the morning. Yes, it can suck. But it’s something you can manage—you just have to actually think about how you’re allocating your time.
>>94394273>But nothing says you can only use the Light property once per turn. Nick itself, yes, but that is not part of the Light description at all. However, since Nick is describing what you can do “When you make the extra attack of the Light property”, and does not posit that a Nick attack is something different, the “You can make this extra attack only once per turn” is one of the conditions that it imposes on your Light attack when it modifies it.To summarize:>Light says you can make ONE extra attack>Nick applies when you make THE (singular) extra attack of the Light property>Nick clarifies that, though it causes the Light attack to no longer require an action of its own, you can make this extra attack—meaning the one from the Light property—only ONCE per turnExtraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Find any support for your claim that you can make multiple Light attacks per turn. Active support for it, not a mere failure for it to be specified one way or the other.
>>94394334You know what? I actually apologize and concede on some of these points. I have an automatic negative reaction to any "grindset" bullshit and time maximization against capitalist full-time bullshit sucking the soul out of you, so that's where my brain went. You are giving handy advice if in a bit of a terse, straightforward way that could have some explanations against it.>Do you know what a "weekend" is?This is my main point of concession and blind spot - I work a full 40hr/week job, but also have creative pursuits and side hustling in that regard that is, effectively, a second job but also the portion of my life that keeps me sane. Because of the industry it legitimately eats the majority of weekend time, so in my brain I legitimately forgot they do exist somehow, because I have to cram all of my shopping and cleaning and bullshit into the weekday evenings as efficiently as I can or else it just doesn't get done. My bad, kek.>He should be cutting things out of his life for D&D.Contextually that was the assumption from the starting point of his point and thread we're in, but fair. And you're 100% right he needs to do that.>Car planningI dunno. Once again, I don't know how hellacious the commute is, but I know mine at half the time is usually the worst part of my day and my mental health quadrupled when I worked from home during Covid and occasionally after. And in my experience, I have time to mentally connect the dots and plot plenty, which does flow the juices and hype a bit. But the important things to, you know, concretely run the game can't be done then.>You just gave to actually think about how you're allocating your time. And on that we agree. Once again, to the other anon, I used to have the exact same issue and still shades of it. But you need sleep. Sacrifice some of the "revenge wakefulness" and sleep, man. You don't think it's as critical as it is, but it literally affects everything and the rest will follow. Time is in your power.
>>94394357>Hitchens razorLmao. This D&D, not metaphysics. While I get it, this does go to show how obtuse WotC was being when they wrote this.
>>94394414Kek, great point. There's crossover there and needs have treated it that way for decades, but this legitimately shouldn't be this hard to figure out.Honestly, I have a huge problem with the weapon masteries for this reason. Most shook out fine, but the book in general has issues like this. I support the idea of martial boosts and weapon attacks, absolutely. I even get some getting more than others. But it is written in such a piecemeal, confusing way that it's a slog to look at. I had a negative reaction to most of 5.24 initially that has held, but upon a re-read do like the weapon masteries, but hate the implementation/formatting of it. I'd already considered giving Martials a progression table to get Battlemaster maneuvers as a base, and maybe add some weapon or weapon-type specific attacks a-la BG3. I want to find a way to take these masteries and re-write it or format it in such a way it is much smoother.>Heavy weapon with Slashing damage? Graze.>Heavy weapon with reach and Slashing? Cleave. >Light weapon with Slashing or Bludgeoning? Nick.Or something. But primarily figure out a way to adjust the "dual wielding" text so it's all in one block explaining you get two if it's light and as part of the third attack, three if you take Dual Wielder, and four or more if you have additional extra attacks. I like the change but needing to look in like five fucking spots and clarify is fucking stupid, as is evident by it being a threadly argument since the book fucking came out.
>>94394402Always nice to see people willing to be conciliatory on this Tibetan basketweaving forum. I know I do tend to come across as terse at best—my players have joked that I have “resting bitch voice”—and that tends to get amplified in longer form text posts.>a second job but also the portion of my life that keeps me saneI’ve always been somewhat fascinated by people with this kind of arrangement. Personally, I find that the commodification of things that bring me joy tends to suck that joy out of them, leaving me with more stress and fewer things with which to fight it. To each their own, I suppose, but it’s been a trend in my life that I’ll gleefully spend twenty hours building a horrible eight-tower-tesseract of a dungeon without the faintest hint of compensation, but find it immediately painful to try to do that sort of thing with a paycheck riding on it.Alternative answer: Effectively a second job that eats up my weekends and has a huge bearing on mental health? Sounds like my marriage! Wakka wakka!>CarsI’ve had some pretty bad commutes—the worst being when I was working in Los Angeles and fluctuating traffic conditions could mean a commute time variance of up to an hour—but I’ve always found it to be a time when my brain just opens up because I don’t have to talk to anyone or bullshit about anything. Probably the best one in terms of campaign planning was when I was commuting from Los Alamos to Santa Fe—I have several distinct memories of coming up with puzzles and complications while rounding the mesas. Even in Montreal, where you have to change your route every few days because there’s new road construction, I’ve had some inspiringly evil ideas while getting from point A to point B, which I’ve then been able to flesh out into a whole session with maybe an hour of sit-down time.

>>94394490Hey, man, it's the only way to make this or any space in this world better. Too much heel-digging, obstinate bullshit and anger in the world at this point, and everything would be better if people had empathy and admitted they were wrong. But I digress.>I've always been somewhat fascinated by people with this kind of arrangement.I know tons, for obvious reasons. I 100% get and agree with you on the commodification of it, and I've know people that have lost the joy of it because of ot. I've even had to be choosier about the projects I engage in for that reason, because if it truly just turns into a second job, I could be making much more money and feeling just as soulless. But I'd say it primarily springs out of area/current economy, standards of living, and some perseverance. Which may sound sterile or obtuse, but to me, it comes from needing to pay rent, primarily, and not having the opportunity/income from the true passion to do it. So you get a solid enough full-timer that has solid enough work/life balance, and then dump your time into the other thing. You do it long enough, you find ways to make money off of it, and it even becomes a badge of honor in a way to do it and get paid for it. But with the modern economy, gig bullshit, and contractor nature of a lot of it, it isn't consistent enough to fully transition over. But you're willing to sacrifice a lot when one half of your life is perfunctory and not engaging, and the other half is what you'd be doing in a luckier world. You kid but I've lost ao many players and friends to a relationship that goes well enough it becomes all they do. Least of all myself!>Cars againThat is fair. It depends on the time of year. The Los Alamos to Santa Fe (Are you a fucking nuke phys guy or something?) drive sounds heavenly, I like and have done similar on longer, open drives. The LA and Montreal sound harder & closer to me, I cannot understate that my area is like Mad Max for some reason.
>>94394357>However, since Nick is describing what you can do “When you make the extra attack of the Light property”, and does not posit that a Nick attack is something different, the “You can make this extra attack only once per turn” is one of the conditions that it imposes on your Light attack when it modifies it.That's right. With Nick, you can only make the Light attack with the Nick mastery as part of your attack action once per turn. However, nothing in the Light property itself says it can only be used once per turn. Nick doesn't retroactively apply itself to a different feature being used at a different time, it applies only to it's own use-case with the attack being made as part of the attack action. As in, the "this" in "this attack", applies to only the modified attack you're making, not the base property distinct from Nick.Let me put this another way - Let's say a Fighter Action Surges at the start of their turn, attacks, Light bonus attacks, then uses their Action Surge to take another bonus action, do you think they would be unable to use a second Light attack on that same turn with their second bonus action, because Light states that you make only one?
>>94394677>Let's say a Fighter Action Surges at the start of their turn, attacks, Light bonus attacks, then uses their Action Surge to take another bonus action, do you think they would be unable to use a second Light attack on that same turn with their second bonus action, because Light states that you make only one?Yes. It says you can take one extra attack, so you can take one.
>>94394677>>94394753>uses their Action Surge to take another bonus action>do you think they would be unable to use a second Light attack on that same turn with their second bonus action>Yes. It says you can take one extra attack, so you can take one.
>>94394753>Yes. It says you can take one extra attack, so you can take one.But it doesn't say you can only use that feature once per turn, rather it says that when you use that feature, you make one extra attack. If the Light feature inherently says that it can only be used once, why does the Nick feature go out of it's way to say that it can only be used once per turn? If the Nick attack is the Light attack and they share the same properties and restrictions, why does Nick have extra language stating something that Light supposedly already states?
>>94394654>and the other half is what you'd be doing in a luckier worldI guess that’s the point that I just don’t get. For me, even if I have complete control over a project and am doing it entirely and precisely to my tastes, receiving money for it soils it. In a luckier world, I would still be primarily earning my income in a sphere that doesn’t intersect with my hobbies, I’d just have more time outside of work to engage with them. Earning a living is something I need to be able to put down at the end of the day, without sparing any more thought on it, or some part of me will always be calculating the overhead, the taxes, and so on. So I’ve never wanted to turn the passion into a source of revenue—and I’d almost certainly turn down any offers to do so, unless they were offering true fuck-you money.Fortunately, losing people to a relationship is far less likely when they marry their first Dungeon Master. I may now occupy that seat, but he’s the one who got me into the game.>drivanI’ve also noticed that different people really engage with driving very differently, so that might be part of it. I’ve been taking the wheel on highways since as soon as it was legal and have driven all across the continent at this point—the highlight being the move from Los Alamos to Montreal at the height of COVID, which we managed in three days of driving. And, to answer the question, HE’S a physics PhD. I’m just a lowly accountant. At this point, driving is so second nature to me that I don’t even notice I’m doing it. By contrast, a lot of my friends will get tense and need to focus on the actual driving itself as an active process. So this one could be entirely up to individual variance—but it’s still definitely something to examine if one is trying to figure out how to bring creativity and inspiration back into their life.>Conclusion in next post because I’m a wordy motherfucker
I'm gonna change the Opportunity Attack rules to say leaves or moves more than 5ft within someone's reach.>Why faggot?Because it's stupid a 2.5ft rabbit can opportunity attack someone running away 5ft away, but a giant octopus with 30ft reach can't opportunity attack someone running away 5ft away they have to be exactly 30ft away.It makes large reach ranges actively less "sticky."And RAW the only solution is to give monsters a separate melee attack for each 5ft increment of reach.>Why allow 5ft, why not any movement in the reach? To reproduce 4e shift and 3e 5ft step.

>>94393713>>94394654>>94394973We’ve meandered a bit to get here, but to move this away from being an actual blog, I’d like to get back to the original post being discussed.Whether you’re empowered by the possibility of earning money from your creative work or whether you find the notion suffocating, whether you consider driving the ideal time to craft campaigns or a potentially deadly sojourn through a minefield of idiots encased in metal, you need to engage with the realities of your life honestly. If you try to cram in more than will fit, something is going to give. Maybe it will be a big thing, like a fight with a significant other that ends a relationship. That’s if you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, everything will weaken and stretch and sag. You’ll keep trying to chase enthusiasm that you remember feeling when you were younger, but it won’t be there because you’re stretching yourself too thin. Maybe that means you need to give things up, whether it’s D&D, video games, or time spent lounging around shitposting.Giving things up isn’t always easy. We like having things. But there’s a point at which your attachment to keeping all those balls in the air can become unhealthy. If it’s keeping you from sleeping or eating properly, that will degrade your experience of everything and make you even more miserable. And, as we age, we have to acknowledge that we have less energy and that some things take more of it. That isn’t reversible, it isn’t the fault of any specific factor, it’s something that we have to acknowledge and work with. Quitting your job and going back to part-time work won’t make you feel like you did back then, it’ll just mean that you’re older and more tired AND paid less.Seek joy and inspiration where you can, but accept that you can’t control them. Love your friends and trust that, if they love you, too, then you can’t be all that bad.

Anyone else have a player with severe ADHD which is further exasperated by him eating tons of sugar and coffee at the table? Dude is seriously over the top energetic before he even starts consuming anything. Thank god we don't do alcohol. He is speaking basically 90% of the time. Always tries to find ways to nudge situations in his favor by speaking towards the ambivalence of the situation or what has been explicitly stated or not. Basically fast talking out of bad situations as the DM is currently explaining them.Great player otherwise, takes notes, remembers a lot, has a ton of experience, takes roleplaying seriously unless he gets bored. He's just very overwhelming compared to everyone else. Extremely hypersexual in the most degenerate ways but only directed towards the game or half-jokingly thankfully.

>>94396441I'll admit this as we're anons here. I've never had a smoke of weed or anything like it my entire life. Not because I'm opposed to it but I've never been in social circles where it has been available or passed around and I truly have no clue how to get it safely. I also live in Sweden where it basically counts as injecting any other type of drug in your veins if you ask people how they feel about weed. "Druggies" they'd say with disdain. While I'm absolutely certain kids are smoking it at least weekly. I could go to the city center at night to find some shady dudes but I don't trust those people to give me anything good honestly. I'm also the type that would run into the first civ cop around and stammer I'd like some weed holding some cash. So, to get back to it. That doesn't sound like a bad idea but I don't want to pay for it and the other guys around the table would probably take issue with smoking during the session.

>>94397351So?
>>94397314I thought about that just after posting, if anything it's two-handed that should give finesse.>>94397345Sadly I don't think I have many longsword webms.>>94397357Pretty sure that wasn't me. But yes, if anything it should be>Longsword, Versatile: This weapon gains the Light property and Graze mastery while being wielded with one hand. While being wielded with two-hands, it gains the Finesse property and Cleave mastery. In that case a TWF can use it as a Light weapon and make up slightly for worse rolls with Graze, while a two-handing user could use it as part of a dex build or still spread Sap with Cleaving.I do think Cleave+Sap is a better combination overall. Though in this case it would still be awkward to use in your sword and board build because you'd have to stow the shield to spread your Sap around.Honestly S+B builds need to be saved by making shields a fucking weapon instead of a stat stick.
>>94397351Note since they mention Cleave (setting aside if that or any bit of the suggestion is reasonable), so it's a 5.5 longsword. 5.5 Rogues have native access to scimitars, but not longswords solving exactly the problem you have. Their weapon Proficiency block is >Simple weapons and Martial weapons that have the Finesse or Light propertyScimitar has both, longsword has neither (RAW, their weird homebrew would cause 5.5 Rogues to only have Proficiency with a longsword when using it one handed I suppose?)
>>94397182Make a new weapon for that:>Martial Melee Weapon>Saber | 1d8 Slashing | Finesse | Slow | 3 lb. | 25 GPLet Versatile weapons stay versatile.
>>94397532just use a rapier or scimitar, you fucking retard
>>94397584Some people like slashing d8 weapons over the rapier.
>>94397594So?
>>94397595So, you can easily create one rather than changing the Versatile property.
>>94397602You can also just use a longsword. A d8 weapon with slashing.
>>94397607Yeah as is the Battleaxe, but neither is Finesse.
>>94397532The only point of it to begin with is allowing the Longsword more use though. As it is, it and the other Versatile weapons are neither good for Light/TWF builds, or for two-handed builds. If Versatile weapons offered properties or bonuses when being used either one-handed or two-handed, that would actually make them useful for more than larping.Of course Light and Graze is pretty much only a TWF concession though. But again the best solution there is just to make shields weapons. Maybe a mastery for them like>while this shield is equipped in a user's hand, reactions that utilize the shield do not spend that character's reactionEnabling more off-turn maneuvers than just one block once.

Its so minor its mostly flavor. Weapon Masteries are new and give you the option to make these weapons a little more different than just being a damage type change. Rapier's have d8, Vex & Finessable but lack the Light property. Shortswords have Vex, Finesse, and Light, but are d6.Longswords have Sap, Versatile (D10), but are not Finessable. Sabers have Slow & Finesse, but no Light.Scimitars have Nick, Finesse, and Light, but are d6.Saber now has its own little niche with Slow.
My rogue player has been promoted to a regional authority for the Thieving Guild. (Interpreting the Guild here as union fixers who relay between governing authorities and gang heads.)She got this position from being the first to retrieve stolen docs and stolen ledgers from the RedBrands. This was in competition with the Dorf Noble who was going to auction them off to fund his aristocratic civil war.Rogue player promises to the Dorf that she will grant her salary to him but I don't think it can be so simple. The party made a choice, and in my mind, the one thing the Guild won't do is play politics. Therefore she can't be seen as directly financing him. Most obvious solution I see is Halia Thornton of the Zhentarim as well as the Mining Guild (LMoP), sucks up to the party, offers to set the Dorf's armies up through shell companies free of charge in exchange for free reign over the town and future inroads with the Dorf's kingdom. She will of course be shady and evil as hell, re-recruiting captured RedBrands and hardly changing their conduct. How else could I interestingly use the Rogues' new mafioso status in a Lost Mines campaign? Any other avenues for the players' to achieve their goal? Bones to throw the noble if he seriously commits to building his forces? Complications from involvement with the Zhentarim?

>>94397476As a houserule I allow all versatile weapons to gain finesse when wielded in two hands and it has caused me zero problems. Versatile as a property has genuinely zero use in the game and this change gives them a niche as good choices for backup weapons on ranged characters.

Dungeon Masters, when was the last time you used a Save vs Death ability against your players? Not even anything difficult, just a DC 13 Con Save against dropping to 0 HP.Players, would you be a sulky little bitch if you failed a DC of <15?
>>94399516>Would you be a sulky little bitch if you died?It depends on the circumstance and the degree of permanence. If I was participating in an activity whose lethality was obvious, transparent, and known, and I chose to ignore the risk anyway, then only very slightly. But to be clear, that would only be because of my poor luck, and not because of your design.
>>94399516I haven't made a creature in a while that just has or save or die effect. I did throw a few Banshee's a long time ago in my first campaign that almost tpk'd the group when they were I think level 9 or 10. Its been several years since then.Outside of that, I have made a few of my major boss creatures at the end of my 17th level 2 year campaign with effects like>If this creature reduces a creature to 0 hit points, they cannot be revived except by the Wish spell or Divine Intervention.I find this somewhat scarier since dropping to 0 does happen especially when you start throwing creatures that are hitting for like 60+ damage per hit or can throw Meteor Swarms and Dark Stars around.

The "Mundane" infusion weapon upgrade from Dark Souls II is one of the neatest concepts I've seen in all of game design. It functions by providing a substantial damage scaling benefit that is extraordinarily back-loaded, with the caveat being that this scaling is based off of one's lowest attribute. For example>Soul Level 100 player >several stats at 25>lowest stat is 10>damage bonus given to his weapon is equivalent to 10Meanwhile>SL80>highest stat is 20>lowest stat is 15>damage bonus given to equipped weapon is equal to 15I've been playing DnD for a few months now, and can't help but think that the concept of "Lowest Attribute Scaling" would be both challenging and enjoyable to mess around with. Does anything like what I've described currently exist in this game system?
>>94399591>Throwing Symbol of Death twice at lvl 5-8 is fair for a small map combat, but that low DC multiturn "instant death" is "too much".10d10 is a ton of damage at level 5-8- twice back to back or 20d10 is honestly just as if not more dangerous as the multi back to back instant KOs. 20d10 damage is 110 damage, if you succeed both average is 55 damage that kills pretty much everyone at level 5 & 6, level 7-8 the d10s might live everyone else is probably dead. And again thats assuming you save both one failed save this is doing over 75+ easy.Wraiths are scary at all levels so as long as someone can roll below a DC 13 CON save in a dark area. I feel like there's another official creature that has a similiar death effect with a higher DC but I cannot remember what its called though.
>>94399591>>94399689Give them an avenue to learn of the true nature of the danger, then also give them an avenue to protect themselves against it.
>>94399695Oh yeah don't get me wrong, D&D as War is a real thing. You can throw a lot of stuff you wouldn't normally think about, as long as the party is given knowledge of it ahead of time and is given access to resources to fight against it. I could throw like 8 banshees at a group and if they knew this was coming ahead of time they could have prepped a magic item or spell like Daylight to counter their wails. For the Symbol example knowing that those are around- Dispel Magic could have been used.
>>94399689>I feel like there's another official creature that has a similiar death effect with a higher DC but I cannot remember what its called though.>Howl (Recharge 5–6). The demilich emits a bloodcurdling howl. Each creature within 30 feet of the demilich that can hear the howl must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or drop to 0 hit points. On a successful save, the creature is frightened until the end of its next turn.Demilich! Those dusty bastards got howl.
>>94399689Thankfully I was under the assumption they meant just one, but the creature I am using can cast Symbol 2/day. And rather than smearing that shit everywhere like it's fucking Duke's, I used one in an area where players could be convinced that the quest is over and thus cause failure. And I chose to use Discord, because it felt thematic and if a fight breaks out, then the Players can suffer disadvantage on initiatives.>>94399695IDK, I feel like just following the tried and true advice of "Geek the mage first" worked well enough for them in the first encounter, they should be fine. The other DMs were seriously against a DC 12 Wisdom Saving Throw, though. It is a good thing I make sure to utilize Inspiration, I guess.

>DM does an insultingly bad "irish" accent for his druid>We have to go rescue said Druid's granddaughter who was abducted by Abyssal necromancers>We find granddaughter, described as an exceedingly beautiful young woman of ample endowments (and literally named Busty Druid Acolyte in the stats), who speaks like a traditional midatlantic disney princess and requests a kiss from the heroes>we valiantly reject such reward, and return the acolyte to the druid grove.>in the closing narration, the DM informs us that we failed to save the granddaughter as the disguised Incubus charms the druid to roll over when demons and undead attackHow mad should we be, teej?
Anyone played it? My group is getting into this setting, seems neat I suppose.
>>94402357Oneshot? If the disconnect between the druid and granddaughter was intentional I can kind of respect it. Depends on the tone of the game and if it came off as bamboozlement or just a fuck-you.>literally named Busty Druid Acolyte in the statsThis is based. Reminds me of that guy and his unshod monk neophyte creature, all of whom were fit teenage girls.
>>94402428
>>94402446DM says the disconnect was intentional, and was ideally meant to clue us in that something was wrong, we were just to player brained to note a difference between deep voice man doing caricature of an accent and deep voiced man doing falsetto disney princess voice with no accent as being notable.
>>94402452High fantasy setting where warfare is banned by the gods because it gives the eldritch gods power, so adventurers are used to conduct proxy wars between nations and factions. Intrigue focused it seems.
>>94402483>falsetto disney princess voiceFalsetto is only acceptable in a comedy performance and can very easily be totally obnoxious.
>>94402530That sounds dumb as fuck, and basically like the 3.5 Dragon chess game that went nowhere because no self respecting 3.5 DM was going to remove spellcasting from their Dragons for "roleplay"
For the love of God is there some official ruling somewhere on what does and does not pass through a wall of force so I can stop getting into stupid arguments about it with my party every other session?
>>94402537>Falsetto is only acceptable in a comedy performanceYou take that the fuck back
>>94402033I play 3+ years long campaigns with my friends. Couldn’t care less if game is dead or not.
>>94402538Anthropologists study tribes of indigenous people in order to figure out what it means to be "human", since in theory they are living the way humans did for 300,000+ years. These groups often wage "symbolic war" instead of killing each other in mass. So in a way, that guy's setting makes a lot of sense, though it does remind me of a Kino no Tabi episode that I found pretty boring.
>>94402538I've actually incorporated Xorvintaal as a main pillar of my long-running campaign setting. It's good shit, in part because the intentional opacity of the rules means you can infinitely justify whether or not dragons intervene in any given event.

So is anyone here actually wholly converting to 5.5e? By wholly I mean use the new one for everything except the ones that don't have an explicit reprint.
Does anyone here have anything they could recommend me that compares and contrasts how the different systems of DnD worked throughout the years? I thought that would be an interesting enough topic to have a dozen different nerds droning on for an hour about that specific idea, even if it's only comparing skill checks or combat, but no such comprehensive video seems to exist. People always go on about how drastically different 3.5, 4, and 5 are when it comes to what you're allowed to do in each and how gamey each one feels but rarely elaborate beyond THAC0 good or muh MMO gameplay. I've only ever played 5E and want to understand what exactly I'm missing out on by not forcing my friends to go back in time with me.
>>94403662My group only got into DnD this last year so we're not going along with it anytime soon.
>>94402357oh fuck, our party has done basically that exact qu3st but it was a king and a princess, also some kind of lust goat demon that's in pathfinder instead of a normal incubus, and we decidedly DID NOT pass the nobility test of rejecting her advances, I was the only party member to not end up fucking her by the next morning when she revealed her demonic man-goat form and tried to kill the king.Except also like, we repeatedly took 20 searching the tower she was kidnapped to, and we had no baseline to judge the princess as acting unusual. So it was just blatant DM railroading basically just to try and get us to fuck a mangoatdemon. In retrospect, I'm pretty sure he had a deceptive transvestism fetish. Not remotely the only instance over the three campaigns of his I was in.
>>94403669feats and skill feats are a big thing in older editions. plus the books actually have rules and references for things like climbing

>>94403669the very early editions are too basic and "unfinished" to really matter. Lots of concepts dont really apply and dont make sense to compare. >>94402537I feel like it works for Elmo. Nobody says "god I fucking hate elmo's voice, that little red shit." Except maybe Rocko. So you could probably get away with it on like, small fuzzy fey creatures even if they're not for comedy.

>>94403799which is interesting, because there are non-cringey ways to play bards. But the kind of people attracted to playing bard specifically want it for the cringiness. It's kind of like tiefling and being an alphabet sexuality with a deep-rooted persecution complex.

New DM. I'm running Curse of Strahd in 2024 rules. I've TPK'd my party three times in the Death House intro. Am I doing something wrong? They've made new characters each time and I've left their old character's bodies inside, and we've all been having a good time. I just feel bad because they keep getting killed.
>>94403860>human champion fighterLow T
>>94403860i was thinking edgelord drow
>>9439565615, 15, *, 16, *, *I swear the *s have to be randomly determined for each and every time they're pertinent. I can't possibly begin to explain my life otherwise.Maybe the Lucky feat and/or a curse/blessing I'm unaware of. Lots of proficiencies.Probably an NPC with plot armor for some reason, honestly.
>>94403767>Lots of concepts dont really apply and dont make sense to compare. No distinction between race/class etc.Race as class is some of the most kino shit on gods grey earth, and a far cry closer to the is closer to being the "species, not race" lore they're trying to retcon to than anything the game has offered in decades. You wouldn't look at a tiger and go "yeah, that probably spins a sticky web and waits for prey to get caught" the claws and jaws, the fur patterns, the high bursts of speed, the eyesight, it's a nocturnal ambush predator. In the same way you wouldn't look at a B/X dwarf and say "I wonder if he might be a wizard" they're actively magic resistant, literally how.YOUR elves are just humans with pointy ears.MYSTARA elves are UNCANNY FUCKING WEIRDOS you would never in a million years mistake for human. The demi-humans are TANGIBLY a different species, TANGIBLY "demi-." They feel more alien than some Star Trek races, LIKE THEY SHOULD.God Bless DCC for keeping Species as Class alive.
>>94403922>a far cry closer to the is closer to being*is a far cry closer to being
>>94403878>three TPKs in the introHow? There's only like four encounters in that dungeon.
>>94403885thank you for perfectly illustrating my point.
>>94403951Your games must be shit if you can't create scenarios that handle a min/max self insert. You probably "gently encourage" your players to choose wacky race/class combos instead of what they want.
>>94403934Running it for five players.>First partyTwo got knocked out by the Animated Armor at the top of the staircase, the other three party members were checking the other rooms after stabilizing them to find a safe place to rest. One of them walked into the room to trigger the Specter encounter, and it wipes out the other three party members.>Second partyAttacked the Ghost children in their room at the top. Funneled into their room one by one and died.>Third partyThe hidden Grick got a surprise round and almost downed two of the party members. Party did not take a short rest before triggering the Ghoul encounter. The Ghouls knocked out three of the party members, two of which failed three death saves to actually die. After beating the Ghouls, the remaining three party members triggered the Shadow encounter by touching the smoky crystal ball that had them in it and got wiped by them.
>>94403878Death House is the worst part of Curse of Strahd because of how imbalanced it is. Your party needs to play like completely paranoid schitzos to have a chance of survival.
>>94403982I'm pretty sure your party is just stupid. There's three more encounters btw. There's a Mimic, Ghasts and a Shambling Mound. Tell them they NEED to rest.
>>94403878i mean, it's on the more deadly side of starter adventures but i still have to ask "How?"Like, you're right to suspect that's not normal. One character is "yeah, they did something stupid or the dice just weren't in their favor, levels 1-3 are rusty shank town them's the breaks"But 3 full TPKs would imply there's a bigger problem occurring. It's not a DCC level-0 funnel.Let's start with some really basic problemshooting.>Character's Starting HP. Max roll of the HD + Con Mod, correct?>attack rolls, stat mod + proficiency bonus, correct?>Saving throws, stat mod + proficiency if their class gives them that save, correct?
>>94403994Like I said, I've never played before so this is a learning experience for me. I thought the ghosts at the top and the shadows were the only really unfair thing.>>94404018Yeah, I thought it was weird that they didn't want to take the short rest before moving on. I even asked them if they wanted to because two of them were so hurt and they still said no.>>94404024We're using DnDBeyond for character sheets. HP would be the standard max roll + CON. Attack rolls are all set up automatically, and I even made sure they're all using equipment and weapons they have proficiency in just in case. Saving throws and stat mods are all automatic through the character sheets as well.
>>94404036>Yeah, I thought it was weird that they didn't want to take the short rest before moving on. I even asked them if they wanted to because two of them were so hurt and they still said no.It's not their fault. We know from metagame info that nothing bad happens if you rest, but there's no way players who aren't spoiled know that resting in the spooky house that's trying to kill you is fine actually.
>>94403662Is anyone? You now have two complete rulesets, each slightly different with their own strengths and weaknesses and a million other house rules changes you could use. I can't imagine wanting to use either with no changes.I'm now running one "2024 game" which just means new versions of classes, spells and feats. Monsters I make myself or get from whatever source or tweak, while the DMG stuff is all inspiration and vibes, rather than determining what I can and can't do in my sessions.
>>94404044A short rest in the room above the basement seems pretty reasonable to me. Long rest is out of the question though.
>>94404052Sure, I guess. It's also reasonable not to take an hour long lunch break in the spooky cabin, is what I'm saying. It's an issue with the system, short rests take too fucking long, there's nothing short about them.
>>94403662We've done it already.
>>94404072They don't exactly have much choice. The cabin is surrounded by the fog and they can't leave. Their only option is to chance the hour long rest, or walk forward while on death's door.
>>94404072when the other option is certain death, why do they keep choosing certain death over risking an hour of rest?
>>94404099The choice to rest would be obvious if resting was easier. Like I said, system issue.>>94404127You know it's certain death because you know the encounters. They don't know that.
>>94404072you could always shorten them to 5 minutes like 4e had them, but make them only able to be take once per hour to prevent warlocks from getting between 384 and 768 spell slots on their days off.since long rests have a similar restriction about how long you can take them it seems perfectly cohesive. i even suggested it in the playtest but WotC didn't feel like listening i guess.
>>94404141they have literally died 3 damn times, if they don't know it by now, then they're incapable of knowing it, because they don't learn from failure.
>>94404072>short rests take too fucking longBased on what, anon? Your imagination? The players' imaginations? It's quite easy to communicate.>Your characters would know this innately, no check required, that the room you cleared earlier has advantages to holing up in; with only one entrance and the occupants having never left, you can monitor the one door in cycles while the rest of the party patches their wounds. It will take a bit of time, but you can stay alert while completing a short rest here. Best case scenario, nothing interrupts you. Worst case scenario, you've pre-empted an ambush and can find a brief respite.Any player who can't comprehend and accept this prompt, either ingame or out, is too autistic to play. So if the players are refusing, you aren't communicating well enough.
>>94404141Trying to rest and then getting jumped during it is an unknown loss.Continuing forward while you're dying is a certain loss.>>94404238I said something like "Two of your are very hurt. You could probably barricade the doors with the furniture around the dungeon and make a safe place for a short rest if you want to." I'm not sure how much more clear I could be.
>>94404247If they're brand new you might need to be more clear about the metagame and narrative.>On a broad scope, this game is mechanically balanced such that you will have opportunities to rest periodically and recover so you aren't just marching from one meat grinder to the other. Normally you'd set those choices yourself, I am just trying to make it clear that by neglecting this option you are making your progression significantly more difficult if not functionally impossible. Adventures are designed to be completed if players use their opportunities and cunning. If there were circumstances that would get worse if neglected while you took time to rest, that much would be telegraphed or outright made obvious to you by narrative. In absence of that, you're otherwise free to rest whenever you like. If you fear constant resting after every scrape then address that when it becomes necessary, players reaching that point is a natural thing.Beyond that, yeah they're too autistic or stubborn.
>>94404261I thought that was obvious and didn't need saying.
What's your favorite Monk from the 2024 rules?
My favourite Monk is the Long Death Monk.

>>94404437Can't you just say it's a particularly large specimen which allows it to work?
>>94403860>Champion fighterI picked this because it's the only fighter subclass whose flavor description actually resonated with me at the time of character creation. I simply wanted to be someone with a military background who knew how to handle a spear better than an average person. They weren't a leader, nor did they have any interest in nor proclivity to magic. The problem is that Champion is just extremely bad compared to Battlemaster, which is basically the martial equivalency of a caster. Even with the current 5.5e ruleset with all the changes made to it. It's just plain bad, that's it.
>>94403662I'm finishing my two campaigns first so it'll be more than a year before I change over
>>94404509You don't have to justify picking the brainlet subclass for the most generic race/class combo in the history of the game, anon. Though I don't see how you concluded it had more flavor than Battlemaster. You can reframe a subclass however you want, you know.

>Male Human Paladin>Male Human Fighter>Female Human Wizard>Male Human RangerWhat would you be playing if you were to join this party as a 5th member?
Homebrewfags, what kind of tools did you wish you have when creating your setting? A lot of online tools seem to focus on providing autistically intricate 24-hour schedules and appearance and random personality quirks for the random barkeep and that's not really something I've had a use for in my sessions. I'm creating a website and one of the things I want to include is a generator for an immediate problem for a town/city and different hooks with outcomes for my players.

What do people here think of the 2025 MM previews in the two free D&D Beyond adventures?Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn and Scions of Elemental are out. Their 4th-level premades are wacky in that each has a very rare item. Moreover, they contain 2025 MM previews, which, admittedly, "aren’t the final versions."• Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn, Updated Monsters and NPCs: CR 1/4 blink dog, CR 1/4 bullywug (warrior), CR 1/4 sprite, CR 1/2 warhorse, CR 1/2 worg, CR 1 bugbear (warrior), CR 6 mage• Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn, New Monster/NPC: CR 4 bullywug bog sage• Scions of Elemental Evil, Updated Monsters and NPCs: CR 1/8 cultist, CR 1/2 gray ooze, CR 2 berserker, CR 2 cultist fanatic, CR 2 ogre, CR 3 knight, CR 4 incubus/succubus (two separate statistics blocks that the fiend can switch between on a long rest), CR 5 fire elemental, CR 10 stone golem• Scions of Elemental Evil, New NPCs: CR 1 pirate, CR 4 tough boss, CR 6 pirate captainThere are some quirks here and there. Berserkers no longer have Reckless and instead simply have advantage on attacks against damaged targets (encouraging them to focus fire), cultists and cult fanatics no longer have Religion proficiency or Dark Devotion, knights no longer have Leadership but add radiant damage to all of their attacks (all NPC knights are at least somewhat supernatural now, apparently), incubi/succubi no longer have Insight and Persuasion proficiency and find it harder to land a mid-combat charm, tough bosses are actually fairly good at shoving PCs around, mages have that nasty triple melee or ranged Arcane Burst from MPMM, pirate captains have a pistol by default and can triple attack with it while simultaneously charming a PC, stone golems have a fairly good ranged attack, etc.
