What do Chaos Space Marines actually get out of joining Chaos? Like, in all the Horus Heresy novels, they only seem fractionally tougher than normal Marines. More, it comes with all kinds of deeply unpleasant drawbacks that frankly don't seem worth the trade-off.
Like, being a bit tougher doesn't seem worth living your life as a disgusting walking plague-carrier. The Death Guard seem to be self-aware enough to loathe their condition, at least at the beginning.
Also, is being literally unable to function without killing people worth the extra strength given by worshipping Khorne? Marines are already incredibly strong, adding more strength seems like a sidegrade at best.
Even the Word Bearers seem to suffer a lot from daemonic possessions. Those who AREN'T possessed have a new aesthetic and cursed weapons, but normal Marines still kill them fairly easily despite their heavy metal cosplay.
The juice just doesn't seem worth the squeeze, if you get what I mean.

For most traitors (like traitor guard), it's Grass is Greener syndrome. The Imperium is a despotic shithole where your expectation is to work until you die, shit out children to send to die until you get sent too, live in mortal fear of guys in funny hats on a power trip, have the whole system come down on your head if you step out of line.

As a chaos guy, at least you can shoot back at your boss if he gets uppity. Social mobility's slightly better too even if the lows are even lower (Chaos Spawn).

The first hit is natural. They know there are dark gods out there. Their whole life is about winning and war. A few sacrifices from the enemy to raise a banner for good fortune is simple pragmatism. That's how it starts.

Once they're on the Road to Glory detox is out of the question.

You seem to be imagining a scenario where anyone gets to make an informed decision between serving Chaos and the Imperium. That scenario has never once occured. Moreover, in situations that come close to approaching such a scenario, the decider would be getting exposed to knowledge that is an active supernatural cognitohazard liable to tug them down the path to Chaos by the very act of thinking it over without maintaining belligerent faithful contempt.
>>
>>94414611
Space Marines are basically programmed bio-weapons. They're thoroughly indoctrinated during their creation and training and they're taught to self-maintain with litanies and constant prayer. Unlike normal humans, who typically don't "choose" to join chaos and just get tricked or mind-raped into it, individual Chaos Marines represent more of a glitch in the programming than anything else.

It's not a logic thing. Most of the time they're not being swayed by convincing argument. It's just a competing meme that got jumbled into their brain and took the same place that Emperor-worship normally does. This is the primary reason why the Legions were split up after the Hersey; once one marine goes, everybody under him is at extremely high risk of going too. They're shockingly easy to manipulate.
>>
>>94414873
>Yeah but the space crack doesn't even feel good
It does.
>Like the Death Guard and World Eaters know that it's hollowing out the very soul of their Legion.
Those who know that are already deep enough to be unable to get out.

Aren't there people who become Chaos Marines without having been Loyalist Marines in the first place? I know guys like the Dark Mechanicus hackenying their own process is why they're protective of Gene Seed and the Daemonculaba is all about birthing new marines so some are literally born into Chaos.
>>
>>94414611
its a combo of the following
>the mere promise of extreme power is enough for some even if most likely it will end poorly (just look irl were most criminals think they will make it to the top/never got caught regardless of evidence against it)
>many got tricked into it or really did not grasp what they were getting into
>to build off that some of the many downsides to chaos were kept hidden to them by said entities and by the time they realized the drawbacks they were to deep in and many cases became to fucked up to see those as downsides
>outright getting mindfucked to begin with since chaos can just do that
>>
>>94415034
>Space Marines are basically programmed bio-weapons.
I've always liked this take on them. They're not lobotomized half-men like servitors, but they are at a brainwashed midpoint between them and real human beings; and only a few marines grow out of biorobot status into truly self-aware men.
>>
>>94414611
It's the wrong sort of mindset to think about a space marine choosing chaos like it's a jon fair.

It's better to consider the archetypes of a chaos space marine.
I'll go in order
>Horus heresy era csm: was actually present for the great crusade and didn't like it. Felt that the emperor's plan was the wrong direction or they felt they were eventually going to be exterminated sooner or later. The mythologizing of the emperor is genuinely laughable to them because they actually met the emperor first hand.
>The drafted: a new member of a warband who was either forcibly inducted or proved their worth. Most likely was born on a planet within the warp and all they know is insanity.
>Renegade astartes: someone who was so fed up with their service, or they were mistreated by the imperium (most likely Inquisition) so they consider hell to be a far better option.

A chaos astartes is like a prisoner and a drafted soldier. And they're thousands of years old. And there is no regulations or schedules or demands. Every warband has to coex or convince each soldier with a reason to fight or they just won't participate. The black legion is more like a coalition of a multitude of mercenary forces acting as one.
As an individual chaos marine, you're most likely sticking with the squad you worked with during the heresy, or when you went renegade. At least you're on a first name basis with them.
So you're more like a gang who live on a daemon planet, aligned or unaligned. They typically have slaves that worship or serve them. They have a base where they return to after a crusade or raid where they unload their treasures, take time off, fuck or eat their slaves. Daemons can't be trusted so they have to fight off or negotiate with daemonic neighbors to stay off their lawn.
>>
>>94415329
What op also has to consider is that astartes are barely human. They live for thousands of years and cannot relate to the average person. They're Extremely deterministic and self motivated as well as having a meritocratic mindset that's burned into them when they're first ascended.
Even loyalist marines won't hesitate to BLAM a citizen for an infraction or insubordination.

A chaos marine straight up doesn't see how they could ever value a human life over their own. Humans are nothing but slaves or useful servants at best. they believe in an astartes supremacy, and their end goal is to eventually supplant the impiriums humanity with an astartes ran government.

Now on to the aligned chaos astartes.
The plague marines were changed without their consent, but they learned to accept and later appreciate their changes.
Khornate berserkers are always knew deep in blood before the worshipped khorne. They were made for slaughter, and yet they were judged harshly for the purpose they were made to do.
Finally they found a god who appreciates their work.

Slaanesh makes the most sense. Marines don't react to pain the same way we do. They don't flinch at pain, they admire pain. They're so inhumanly resilient that things that cause us displeasure are inverse. That's how slaanesh marines come about. Noise marines hear 1000x better and pain and pleasure are melded together.

Tzeentch is magic I don't have to explain the appeal.
>>
>>94415390
When we're talking about a person who lives for thousands of years, and they have to settle with the prospects of laying down their life for insignificant cockroaches that make up the billions of subterranean dwellers of the imperium, you can't be left scratching your head when they think it isn't worth it.

They go their own way into a Bizarro hellscape.
An astartes never really settles down, they love challenges, they love pushing themselves to the limit. A fight to the death is what they look forward too. So living in the eye of terror is truly like home to them.
It's the difference between an indoor cat and an outdoor cat. The outdoor cat has to fight for their next meal and they love it.
>>
>>94415329
>take time off, fuck
Do CSM get their sex drives back? That's at least one argument in favor of Chaos.
>>
>>94415420
Absolutely. This isn't a question. Loyalists are mentally indoctrinated to only focus on warfare and loving the emperor.

Chaos marines are under the influence of chaos, but overall they can indulge in the vices of mortals. From gluttony to women. The emperor's children aren't some exception. You don't join slaanesh to get magic dick pills to get hard again. Chaos marines raid imperium planets for resources and slaves. People to make their food, clean their codpiece, and to suck their dick when they're not fighting.

It's the difference between being a chaste crusader who withholds themselves from the temptations of the flesh. Vs a Conan the barbarian who takes what he wants when he wants it.
>>
>>94415446
This is some head cannon, with no examples outside an Ian waston novel of the EC with warp beasts growing from their groins.
>Not even a question
lmao
>>
>>94415455
Even when you try to argue you still acknowledge "exceptions".
Why even bother denying it? There's so many canon nods to astartes sex drives.
Most fans just agree it's real but not important to mention.

You'd have to be some weird incel to get angry at the idea that space marines, let alone chaos space marines CANNOT even THINK about sex. As if your setting would collapse.

Face it. Astartes have sex. Loyalists are brainwashed to avoid it. Chaos marines can as long as they aren't completely fucked up.
>>
>>94415472
nta
What cannon nods are there?
>>
>>94414611
>Like, in all the Horus Heresy novels, they only seem fractionally tougher than normal Marines.
This was true at the time, but now they're on average a clear step up over normal marines due to their "gifts" increasing over time as well as just having vastly more experience.

For the average Chaos Marine that isn't bound to a god, just being able to do whatever you want is enough of a trade off.
Instead of serving the imperium they can loot, plunder, and kill as much as they want and even take planets and live like kings should they choose.

Of course, it's percieved immediate freedom vs long term eternal servitude, but characters in 40K aren't written to be smart.

You walk into a casino knowing the game is rigged in favor of the house and you still think you'll walk away with a healthy chunk of change if you play your cards right.

There are people who are willing to play the game because they think they can work enough around the downsides to get something of it and make the most of their shit situation. Hell, the alternative is the Imperium and you've already burned those bridges. Death is the only good thing you have going for you and you'd be luck (if you're a mortal) that having your mind destroyed as you get servitorized would be the best thing that happens to you (we're never told what Death Masking is).

I think for Space Marines it's just a catch 22 situation. Typhus purposfully infected his legion and Mortarion so they had no choice but to fall in line. Angron put the butcher's nails in everyone's head so where else are you going to go but seeing more red than you normally do. Ahriman fucked up the Rubric and turned half his legion into dust and EC are all strung out junkies.
>>
>>94414611
I think you're forgetting something pretty obvious and important:

The Chaos Space Marines are still alive, 10,000 years later.

Every contemporary loyal Space Marine is long dead, excepting two or three forever imprisoned within a Dreadnought.

Human actions throughout history includes an endless range of unspeakable deeds for far less a prize than immortality.

Immortality aside, most Chaos Space Marines (who survive) get everything they ever wanted - power, revenge, worthy enemies to fight, legendary toughness, endless experience, whatever - it's easy to see how they rationalize that what they lost isn't really important.

I mean, maybe you want something in life outside of being unable to function without killing people, but to most Space Marines, these things are called *distractions* and they *want* to be rid of them.
>>
>>94414611
It's sunk cost fallacy.
>>
>>94415390
>They live for thousands of years
Hundreds. Space Marines who hit 400-500 are considered old, like UM Chaplain Cassius. Only a few chapters, like Blood Angels, can break into the quadruple digits.
>>
>>94415639
They aren't even close to immortal. On average their lives are shorter. Time doesn't flow normally within warp anomalies like the Eye of Terror and Screaming Vortex.
>>
>>94416208
A loyalist marine that's 300 years old is considered senile.

A chaos space marine that's 2000 years old is still considered a newfag in his warband.
In Lord Of Silence a 2000 year old CSM has a chip on his shoulder because some of the original marines from mortarions Homeworld give people shit.
>>
>>94414611
CSM are basically demigods that get to do whatever they want.
Most CSM have specific objectives and/or desires though. For example the Red Corsairs just want to raid shit because they can. Night Lords on the other hand are trying to survive, running from place to place, seeking new geneseed to ensure they don't die from genetic impurities.
God-specific CSM get certain perks.
>Tzeentch
Forbidden knowledge and power.
>Nurgle
No more pain, virtually impervious to death.
>Slaanesh
Sensations in excess.
>Khorne
Glory in combat.
Also, most CSM have lived since the Horus Heresy. They're long-lived veterans which makes them that much more lethal.
>>
>>94414611
Well no shit but that's not the point. The point is they're too crazy or far gone to go against the gods.
>>
>>94414611
Space marines don't get a lot out of it. They naturally are treated very well, able to enforce their own rights/opinions live thousands of years in relatively good health, have a robust support system.

Chaos can offer them a few things (their pp, freedom to a degree almost unthinkable, self expression, etc) but most marines don't fall, their primarchs do. Big Swaths of 'chaos' nurgle and iron warriors come to mind were only converted because one very insistent dickhead decided. Oddly enough Nightlords were one of the most 'democratically converted' by being such trash to begin with.

For a regular human? Especially a regular worker in the imperium? Chaos has tons to offer. Pussy, Drugs, Revenge, Longevity
>>94414817
This guys is basically hella wrong. Traitor guard is getting a good deal depending how seriously you want to take the 15 hour thing. Social mobility upward (at the tip of the gun) is just another benefit.

>>94414870
Also this badass more or less mans recruitment posters. "Hey Private do you want to commit a warcrtime?". Even like today I would presume a better then 5% conversion rate
>You mean that you'll give me bulging muscles for every fucking muslims I execute Illegally?
>Khorne: Yes yes, I thought that was clear, make a little hill out of the bodies and I'll convert your A-10 Warthog Airsupport into a dragon you can feed spent casings into.

>>94414873
>Space Crack doesn't even feel good
I mean does alchohol feel good? The bar isn't high here. When the Slannette's come and off you glowing warpcocain off their one tit are you really going to say no?
>>
>>94416369
>I mean does alchohol feel good?

>>
>>94416369
>Traitor guard is getting a good deal
>Live an equally short and brutal life
>Your betters view you as even more disposable cannon fodder one step above cultists
>no departmento munitorum to ensure you at least have access to things like ammunition and spare parts
>Your upward mobility is limited mostly by who you can kill and you will always be lower than Astartes unless you are in the top 0.1% of humans who are likely to ascend to Daemon Prince
Good deal is really overselling it. Chaos is Darwinian to the point of making the Imperium look socialist.
>>
What you need to keep in mind is that tragic figures are cool. Both a prisoner and a soldier of hell. They understand that the only way out is through, and that means they need to fight harder to have any ounce of respect and dignity.

It's the same appeal as humanity. Where you feel like the clock is always ticking in your existence. A chaos marine feels more intimate because you know individually they're looking out for themselves.

I guess I just find chaos interesting in a Kafkaesque sense. They enter reality simply to steal shit and kill, then to go home they enter back into hell and watch tv on the daemon world the call home, where physics and spacetime don't make any sense.
>>
>>94415505
>long term eternal servitude
Even then, it's a very wishy washy 'slave to your own darkest drives' kind of servitude. The gods aren't holding a whip and chaining you up to pick cotton, they're just twisting and inflating whichever bits of darkness inside you that correspond to their domain into something increasingly all-consuming. This also means that the bigger a shitheel you are to start out with, the less the condition of slavery-to-darkness has any practically verifiable negative.
>>
People get all this age shit wrong. That "thousands of years old" isnt how long they've actually lived because they are all hanging out in various warp spaces where time doesn't work. Iirc in the night lord trilogy I think Talos mentions it's been something less than 200 years since they've been a warband and while a date isn't given, the population on tsagualsa had been on it for quite a few centuries slowly dwindling away. Been a minute since I have read it but my point stands. While it's been 10k years since the heresy, I doubt any of the CSM are over 800 years old.
>>
>>94416464
>The gods aren't holding a whip and chaining you up to pick cotton
Unless you're a mortal. In which case the Iron Warriors probably are doing that.
>>
>>94416493
True, but at that point it's a wholly corporeal matter of people enslaving people, and the people of the Imperium are also liable to do that kind of thing to their fellow man, albeit more often for reasons of callous bureaucracy rather than sadism.
>>
>>94416487
Incorrect. You are right that time in the warp doesn't work, but it's a misconception to think that it breaks down in a uniform way. Some CSM are only a week out from the Siege of Terra by their own subjective reckoning, some have experienced near enough the full 10k years, and a few have potentially experienced longer than has actually passed.
>>
Lot of people like to think of Imperium vs Chaos as good vs evil, but it's not. They're both evil.

What it is is law vs chaos. In the Imperium, you do not matter. 99.9999% of the Imperium's population is hilariously expendable, and treated like absolute shit. The chance at achieving anything is basically nil, and even the ones who aren't horribly experimented on or otherwise used for some terrible purpose can expect to spend their entire lives in meaningless and horrible toil. The Imperium is basically "The reward for doing a good job is just another job" except that they'll kill you if you do a bad job.

Chaos, meanwhile, gives you freedom. Sure, almost all chaos cultists get the exact same raw deal that the Imperium would give them if they stayed loyal. But if you're smart enough, clever enough, strong enough, or even just lucky enough, your conditions can improve. You can earn favor, rewards beyond your wildest dreams, and power beyond reckoning. You can rise from the lowest slave to a conqueror of entire planets and systems. Are the odds against you? Absolutely. But it gives you that chance.

For marines specifically, you have to remember that most marines live agonizingly terrible lives as well. They're basically mutant freaks who's lives are controlled to a dystopian degree, they're practically robots. They repress practically everything about themselves when they're not forced to do so through chemical or mechanical means. And that repression can boil over, burn through the conditioning and everything else intended to control them. The stronger the repression, the more explosive the release, and so they instead seek to indulge in everything denied to themselves once they're, for the first time in their lives, free to do as they please.
>>
>>94416655
Still a shitty deal for Marines. You are either the favored weapon of the Imperium or the favored weapon of the Chaos Gods. The only thing that really changes is the color of your chains.
>>
>>94416655
I didn't add enough 9s to that figure.

It should roughly be 99.999999999999%

>>94416666
Of course, Chaos is still evil. And they're fickle as all hell, so that freedom lacks any sort of certainty.
>>
>>94416678
I dunno, Anon. They make it sound like most planets in the Imperium have a fairly large population of hyper rich nobles who basically just do drugs all day and hunt poor people for sport that the Imperium basically leaves be as long as their tithes are met. They seem to lead pretty sweet lives.
>>

I actually liked the older Death Guard lore where the Plague marines and Mortarian were pressed ganged into Nurgle's service by stranding them in the Warp and infecting them with a plague that made their lives miserable. They weren't really given a choice (just like Morty wasn't given a choice by his adopted father to go on to not really being given a choice by Big E) and as a result they were miserable and rotten bastards festering in their own spite and necrosis. The reason they made the choice was they were given no other choice.

Then 8th Edition comes out and GW covers them in tentacles, mouths and smiles and the models were happy and cartoonish. Proving once again that Games Workshop can take a cool idea or concept and just fuck it completely.
>>
>>94416781
Isn't that still what happened, except now typhus is the boogy man responsible for it.

>>94416781

They're immortal so far.

The time warp effect is minimal.

Not all Chaos Space Marines have ever been to the Eye of Terror. Most of the Word Bearers, for example, remained in the Maelstrom (which is a natural phenomenon that is cause by warpstorms, but is not an area of warp/realspace overlap). And many Chaos Space Marines haven't been to they Eye or the Maelstrom. Most of the Alpha Legion, for example.

The things you know are not necessarily the things a guy in 40k knows. Without player knowledge, those chaos juices seem much better.
Also arrogance. A marine feels himself superior, so he certainly won't end up being a chaos spawn, but become the next big demon prince for sure.

In addition to this, while we have player knowledge, we don't actually know how it would be to life in a horrible and restrictive society like the imperium. Living in such a dystopian system might make any alternative look good, even if, in hindsight, it was stupid.
But once you tasted the chaos juice, there is no way back, and you have to fully embrace it and hope to succeed or you just die. And since it also alters your brain and your perception, you will probably enjoy it at some point.

This. There is no rules to it. Horus entered that portal on beta gamon or whatever the planet was called and fought for thousands of years on the other side. Then he stepped back out a few heartbeats later, visibly aged, but for his legion no time passes at all.
The way the warp works can simply not explained by rules. Csm are as old or young as they need to be, and there are so many old veterans left alive, or brought back, as there need to be. And there are so many new marines simply "made" as needed.

Multiple reasons, first you don't know that chaos gods don't care about you and daemons want to fuck you over. Imperium is a very bad place to live, chaos offer alternative for better or worse.
Marines are child soldier bio engineered assault troopers, their entire life is based on war or training for war, they are mentailly programmed for it. Once programming break or once they get frustrated with burocracy, or baseline humans(why are we fighting for this worthless shitheads) or see champions of chaos with some awesome powers and they want it. There are many resons for marine to join chaos, some are cursed and are forced to either join or die(Crimson Slaughter, Scourged, Death Guard), some fuck up, became renegade and it's only way for them(Red Corsairs, Thousand Sons), some get corrupted because of massive warp exposure, some just need a little push because at the end of the day marines are bio engineered killers who know no better and only real diference is if they scream "For Khorne!" instead of "For Emperor!".
As for chaos cults, poor people want to better their lives, sick massess want to not be sick, poor don't want to be poor, there are entire death culths that worship Emperor by act of killing, you just need to switch Emperor for Khorne, there are warrior cultures, nobles always want more, this make them susceptible for corruption. Remember than 99% of Imperium have no idea that daemons even exist and there is no real knowledge about Chaos. Chaos powers are expert on temptation, they are excellent used cars salesman, you happily buy your new car, best car ever. You drive it and it turns out it's shit, took part in 5 accidents and was badly repaired, brakes don't work so you can't even stop, cops and glowies are searching for it and there is gun used in 2 robberies and 5 murders inside glove compartment also there is corpse in trunk, in short you can't stop, are fucked and there is no turning back.

It's all mostly shown through emperor's children and slaanesh aligned marines. But there's no reason to assume black legion is collecting slaves only for sacrifices. Even a grey knight had a moment where he had to close his eyes from the temptations of a daemonette.
A group of CSM fucked up some bolter bitches and had their way with them before sacrificing them.

It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to assume they rape anon.

>4. Take revenge on those who wronged you and be rewarded for your anger and hatred.
>5. Experience a true fatherly love you have never known before in exchange for harboring an infectious disease.

>>6. Give in to obsession and be given everything you've ever wanted: Food, sex, possessions, artistic expression.
I genuinely don't understand WHY Slaanesh is supposed to be evil. Fulgrim paints a really clear picture of Slaanesh worship being obsession with your work combined with excess in your personal life.
Of course in the story this leads to killing someone to get the perfect shade of paint, a giant orgy, and a musical performance that is designed to kill anyone who listens to it. But in general the idea of Slaanesh being "Hyperfocus on being the best at something and live life to the absolute fullest" would be bad.

Anon Slaanesh is literally drug addiction. It start from feeling good and wanting little more and end with hollow shell of crackhead. It is always chasing perfection you can never achieve.
Tzeentch is about hope and nurgle about acceptance of death, they are not bad at ffirst, but it's downward spiral. Khorne is pure act of killing and bloodmad berserk but it often start as warrior brotherhoods and martial honor and skill.

Fuel to the fire, I have no dog in this particular fight:

In Emperor's Gift, the Inquisitor's party are having a communal shower and that currently includes a Grey Knight. Apparently the women henchmen discuss how much of a 'waste' it is that the guy who became a Grey Knight, became a Grey Knight, the implication being that he is massively hung but will never use it. He's a psyker but even this does not allow him to understand what they mean because he has no concept of sexual attraction - even though he was (extremely unusually) 15 year old before he started the process of becoming a Grey Knight. So it's not clear if he can even get it up, but regardless he has no idea what to do with it and no interest in doing so - and that he almost certainly once did, but it has been brainwashed out of him. Also, he psychically links with the Inquisitor while she's having sex (without realizing the intrusion beforehand; she wasn't nearby), and is revolted.

Conversely, in Codex Space Wolves 5th edition, it's mentioned that Lukas the Trickster was 'famous for sharing a dozen beds in a single night'. So either GW is promoting shota+milf degeneracy (in a furfag book, to no surprise), or this happened after he became an adult, which as we know must mean after he became a Space Marine, since you have to become a Space Marine at a very early age (way too early to be having sex, let alone at a rate of a dozen times a night) for it to work.
>>
>>94420453
>Sorry, blue board.
A screenshot of text would have to be quite exceptional to reach the level of NSFW, all the more so given how inane GW text is, at least as far as it pertains to sex and sexuality.

>I'm already blushing at what I'm reading.

The Grey Knight was circa First Battle for Armageddon, so around 450.M41 I guess. He was young and relatively inexperienced (trained for decades, but not even sergeant-equivalent yet, and somewhat overconfident and still making mistakes/taking bad risks).

I don't really know (I don't imagine that even Inquisitor warbands regularly get to see naked space marines for comparison), but I got the impression that they were specifically talking about his size, personally, and not space marines in general.

Then again, the book is titled The Emperor's Gift. The explanation is that apparently the Grey Knights (believe that their) geenseed comes directly from the Emperor. Maybe Grey Knights, specifically, inherit the Emperor's gigachad member too?

No, Lukas, and that quote specifically, is from Codex Space Wolves, 5th edition, circa 2009, discussing then-currently-alive 40K-era space marines usable in standard Warhammer 40,000, even getting a model around the same time.
>>
>>94416220
>On average their lives are shorter. Time doesn't flow normally within warp anomalies like the Eye of Terror and Screaming Vortex.
This can also mean their lives are much much longer since time doesn't work normally. A vet could be 100,000 years old. Why does everyone only say it applies to make the time shorter?
>>
>>94421098
>So either GW is promoting shota+milf degeneracy (in a furfag book, to no surprise
Its this. iirc there was something about SW conversion working on older recruits.
>>
>>94416464
Yep. The way it's meant to work - and does work except when you have a total faggot writing - is that chaos gives you massive boons but drives you to do cruel and self destructive acts, then when you die, your soul now belongs to the god who you worked for and they do literally whatever the fuck they want with you forever. The punishment comes when you're dead - and if you're a bad enough dude to go beyond death and become a daemon prince, you become a true slave, but are at least never going to suffer after you die.
Of course a lot of annoying writers instead make chaos characters pathetic and weak because they don't get it's a classic deal with the devil archetype
>>
>>94422014
>there was something about SW conversion working on older recruits
People do say this, so not attacking you, but, is there an actual quote anywhere?
Or even an argument as to why this might actually be the case for Space Wolves only and specifically?
Any examples of Space Wolves, specifically or even generally, where it is actually mentioned that they were inducted at a particular late age?
Even any precise age for when Lukas was actually inducted?
Just sounds too much like cope - like GW (and their apologists) trying to back out of their pedo canon without actually addressing it at all.
>inb4 muh unreliable narrator
>>
>>94422258
>like GW (and their apologists) trying to back out of their pedo canon without actually addressing it at all.
It seems like this to me too honestly. Not a space yiff fan so haven't dipped into much of their novels or anything really, its just a sentiment I've seen expressed here.
The elephant in the room really would be the depictions of space marine recruiting in various sources compared to the written fluff expressing them as prepubescent. Easy way around this is to have them be teens but that gets into other problems.
>>
>>94422008
Because they tend to get killed by other warbands. 10,000 years of warp time in the Eye is a very long period of time for you to get killed.
>>
>>94422024
>then when you die, your soul now belongs to the god who you worked for and they do literally whatever the fuck they want with you forever. The punishment comes when you're dead - and if you're a bad enough dude to go beyond death and become a daemon prince, you become a true slave, but are at least never going to suffer after you die.
Except even if that's technically true, it's missing the point. The 'after you die' bit is irrelevant. As you become closer to the gods' ideals, you sacrifice more of yourself until there's nothing else left. A Khorne follower becomes more and more like Khorne (as much as a mortal can), becoming less and less human (or anything else but Khorne) until there is no virtually difference. You don't care that you become enslaved to Khorne after you die because you were already enslaved to Khorne during life (and you didn't care then, because it was what you wanted). After you die you essentially become part of Khorne and that's only bad for you if you weren't fully committed to Khorne in the first place. Daemon Princes are just a different kind of 'after you die' - just as much a slave, but just as much an apotheosis of their god that by then there is no difference and slavery has no real meaning.

Only pussies and pretenders have a problem with following Chaos, before or after they die. If you chicken out, then yeah, Chaos means short, temporal torture followed typically by eternal torture. But otherwise, you gradually give up everything else to be more like the ideal (i.e. god) that you chose to worship, until you become one with the very concept.

Dunno about Lucas but Ragnar in his first novel get laid, only to be almost killed in battle next day, to be rescued alongside his "killer" by wolf priest and recruited to chapters. He was still teenager.
There also was Black Templars comic with very big "teenager" recruits.
So Lucas being not so young but still teenager and banging multiple women in single night isn't that much out of question.

Nah man, every aspect is as cool as you want. You need to understand that most perspectives you read here are from guys who hate your favorite faction and will shit talk everything you like

I like chaos, simply because it's cool. But if you ask the loyalists they will say they're just a bunch of edgy retards. Every chaos primarch is a manchild with daddy issues. And you very existence is miserable.
In reality, chaos makes the imperium shit their pants so bad that they need to mind wipe or execute the soldiers that survive a chaos attack because it's so pants shittingly terrifying. The chaos primarches were able to bring the emperor to his knees and leave him as a literal skeleton unable to make any decisions. They now have their own mini empires like macragge where they get to rule. A chaos marine has literally zero logistics and they still fuck up space marines.
And being a chaos space marine is the tits. It's like being on heroin and cocaine. You're high off the warp 24/7. The space marines have to grudgingly serve humanity, but chaos space marines get to take as many slaves as they can carry to serve them like kings.

A loyalist gets angry at the mere mention of chaos having a good time. But they'll ignore all the players that make the imperium out to be a noble bright utopia.

At least humans get SOMETHING from worshipping Chaos. Getting to be their favorite pawns is mildly better than worshipping alien gods.
In Sanctus Reach, there's a bunch of humans who worship Gork and live like Orks and they just get laughed at on death.
>The freak clawed helplessly at Big Bruvva’s arm, the cult leader lifting his prize into the air. No poison could stop him. No wound would bring him to his knees. He was the Chosen One. He was Gork’s herald. He was triumphant.
>Big Bruvva held the freak aloft, ignoring the pain. This was his moment. He threw back his head and joined in his followers’ cry.
>‘Waaaaaag–’
>He didn’t even see the freak move. There was no warning. One minute it was hanging from his fist, like a slab of meat, and the next it was thrusting the stump of its arm through the protective cage that surrounded Big Bruvva’s head. He had no time to react. The bloody end mashed into his face, stripping the skin away in an instant. The flicker of a memory replayed through his mind. The pool of gore steaming on the cathedral floor, eating through the stone slabs like acid.
>Big Bruvva had no idea if he screamed. He saw Gork’s bloodshot eyes, painted large across a blazing cosmos, even as his own were reduced to a viscous jelly that dribbled out of melting sockets. Gork was laughing, throwing back his mighty head and roaring with mirth. Big Bruvva never felt his hand loosen around the freak’s throat. Never felt it press its stump deeper, burning through his skull and into his brain. Never even felt his knees buckle, his engorged body crashing forward, the exo-skeleton smashing into the jagged debris on the floor.
>As he died, the only thing Big Bruvva could hear was Gork’s mocking laughter, taunting the man who would have been an ork.
>His Chosen One.
>His fool.

Why do people vote for the Leopards Eating Faces party? Because they're promised a turn to wear the boot on their throat, a chance to be powerful, a way to hurt the people who hurt them. Of course they're not making an informed decision but once they're in it they can't turn back because the worms are already in their brain, sometimes literally. And sometimes they do actually get power, and sometimes they just become tools for the powerful. Ultimately most of them are just calling out for something to stop the pain, and when something answers they accept it, but they don't really understand just how bad things can get.

And if you think Chaos and it's effects is really that horrifying to a space marine, you don't really get what space marines are or do. They live to kill, they live to kill horribly and decisively. They have no qualms when it comes to killing the weak or the innocent, and they have no qualms against doing it horrifically. A horrific growth that aids in that? Just another tool.

There's an, ah, EC excerpt where they're doing.......things to a SOB convent. Involves some questionable tentacle related things. I think its a very old excerpt, i cant remember where its from exactly. Modern GW wont touch that kind of thing with a bargepole as its anathema to the Warhammer(tm) child friendly lore.

>Joining Chaos
Most dont, not really, its just the default when you're stuck in the Eye of Terror, trying to survive, and the eyes of extradimensional entities are ever upon you. A lot of them refuse to even acknowledge the Chaos Gods except for how they can be used e.g. IW, NL. Since the Heresy, very few have actively decided to join Chaos, its mostly exiled marines slowly compromising their morals with hard but tangible bargains.
As for what they offer. Demons are weapons, they can be physically used in swords, armour, vehicles and other devices. The gifts of chaos can help you find information, navigate, see the future, make you stronger, faster, larger, feed your desires, make new desires in a stunted existence, let you know when you're being lied to, make you immune to pain and capable of taking wounds, make you able to cast lightning from your fingers, walk in the warp, or see men's souls. Its a toolbox of largely unasked for but useful gifts, which simply accumulate the more the marine acknowledges or feeds his passions, while requiring little in return, and escalating if they openly worship one of the Gods. They are not in a neutral space and making a choice, they're being manipulated and pushed to first acknowledge, then utilise, then worship Chaos. As for tangible benefits, Khorne Berzerkers will beat most opponents in a 1v1, they're significantly faster and stronger then even a normal marine, their loss of control is their weakness. Nurgle's deal is a devil's bargain, but there's no backing out and theres a malaise of acceptance which comes with it. Slaanesh is self explanatory, pleasure for pleasure's sake, it doesnt (neccessarily) make them more deadly, it feeds their desires. Tzeench is the most varied, but usually only powerful characters (psykers) are drawn to tzeench, so its harder to compare, as they all have wildly different power levels and knowledge. Presumably he can actually offer greater power and knowledge to chaos sorcerers.

This. A space marine literally can't feel fear, and pain is like an archaic sensation that hits them differently. The Imperial fists use a glove that activates all their nerve endings so they can meditate on pain.

To an astartes, seeing flayed skin and flames probably feels more at home than a peaceful environment. They were made to enjoy combat more than peace because they are eternal soldiers. This is why it should come as no surprise when you show them literal hell where no peace is given, and pain and conflict are normal and where normal men shudder they would look upon it like Disney Land.

So where is it? An actual source not just some guy on the internet who wants to jerk it to raping nuns?

>What do Chaos Space Marines actually get out of joining Chaos?
Khorne worshippers can lose themselves in blind anger. They can let go of any restraints and worries.
https://youtu.be/AbmDLVFAaec?si=hS4xUNygrKdgOzB2

Nurgle worshippers are promised the bliss of oblivion. Why struggle to survive when death is both inevitable and ultimately a more peaceful state of being?
Tzeentch worshippers are promised knowledge and power that comes with it. He promises to sate the endless curiosity of the ambitious.
Slaanesh worshippers are promised endless orgies and pleasure. Live an existence of ultimate hedonism.

Although lot of books has Chaos gods luring Space Marines with promise of power (especially Tzeentch), usually they offer more of a life philosophy option than anything else. They just sneakily don't mention the negative effects.

Khorne eventually turns you into mindless rage monster and because of the extremely violent warlike lifestyle your life expectancy is exceptionally short. Eventually your own skull will be sat on by Khornes warty ass.
Nurgle grooms you to get used to the endless pain of disease as you turn into a living bed of disease and rot.
Tzeentch fails to mention the "truth" out there somewhere keeps constantly shifting so all Tzeentch worshippers are doomed to an endless wild goose chase. The "greater knowledge" is a scam.
Slaanesh has the traditional Devil deal approach of simply consuming your soul in death, after a life of excess and luxury. You had your fun, now become fuel for a demon goddess and cease to exist.

The entire system of exchange in the imperium is a mix of mercantilism, favours, capitalism, etc.
They pay too. Everyone pays.

Yeah its ancient stuff from the Jaq Draco books, standard Ian Watson degeneracy. I feel dirty just copy/pasting it.

>A stretch of side wall had partially collapsed. Through the resulting gap, from behind a baffler of marble debris, Jaq and the Eunuchs were witnesses to vile revelry in the once-delightful plaza outside where terracotta urns of floral shrubs lay shattered. Were the screaming tethered female prisoners hallucinating while abominations were perpetrated slowly and perversely upon their flesh? The Slaaneshi Chaos Marines had certainly used hallucinogenic grenades – as well as boltguns and meltaguns and terrible chainswords, and heavier weaponry too. Were hallucinogens intensifying the already appalling sight, and the implacable cruel touch, of pastel-hued armour exquisitely damascened with debauchery upon the breast plates and the shoulders? Was that which was already monstrous being multiplied far beyond the brink of sanity?

>A few tormentors had shed items of armour, exposing grotesquely mutated rampant groins, their organs of pleasure bifurcated and more, with squinting eyes sprouting from them, and with drooling lips.

>Others had no need to shed armour. Chaos Spawn had materialized: wolf-sized creatures with legs of spiders and bodies of imps, with questing tentacles and phallic tubes. Jaq himself almost believed that he was hallucinating. A snake-like umbilical cord connected these spawn to the swollen groin-guards of their master – who stood back, roaring and whinnying with delight, as they guided the spawn in the ravishing of their captives, soaking up the sensations of these roving external members.

It's from 1990 novel. It had stuff like Emperor talking directly, had harlequin working for Illuminati faction of Inquisition running with heavy bolter on Slaaneshi world, also illuminati had psionic tentacle rape monster called Hydra, that tentacle and mind raped callidus assassin, genestealers weren't tied to nids back then. Diferent book from that time and same author who always have to put his fetishes into books have space marine eating shit and marine being eaten by gigant vagina on tyranid bio ship. A lot of stuff like Sensei, Orks fucking and crossbreeding with Gretchins, half Eldar Ultramarines master of astropath, or Ultramarines being 3rd founding chapter, GSC being it's own thing and not nids is no longer "canon".

Sorcerers are not necessarily psykers, they just seem to be better at it. A lot of non-psykers can be drawn to Tzeentch for the promise of sorcery alone.

I think these books are canon. Black Library has a whole label for non-canon works called Forbidden Tomes and the only Ian Watson book printed under that label is Space Marine.

Eh I'm the guy in favor of CSM being able to fuck but you can't really use fantasy as an example because chaos warriors are space marines, just regular humans tainted by warp.

>Nurgle worshippers are promised the bliss of oblivion
Nurgle isn't giving up, he's giving in. Its reaching the point of beyond despair, where you stop wanting things to get better and instead want them to get worse. It's no longer hoping for a better future, but cutting the deal to be the one that gets to stomp heads in when the time rolls around for it. Nurgle and his follows are never laughing with you, just at you.

Because these novels are shit. They failed to show the real Powers you get when you join Chaos.

Someone ask the GW twitter if csm can still fuck like in the old days.
>>
>>94414611
You make it seem Marines one day randomly join chaos. That doesn't happen. Falling to chaos is a process.

To be fair the pitch from the other guys is
>Toil Hard and Die so that you may aspire to be a cog in the machine of death so vast that only a genetically gifted human could have designed it so your pitiful death propels it forward liket he quadrillions of dead before you.

No one is saying Chaos is all sunshine and rainbows, they're saying you're boned either way might as well try to sniff a Slannette's asscrack on the way out.
>turns out it's a nurglette's ass crack
>damn you ruinous powers , they warned me

Yeah, and if you get really lucky you become an immortal daemon. It won't happen unless you're a mega badass, like that woman who swallowed three slaanesh daemons and became a daemon prince, but it's a carrot that incentivizes trying very very hard
