The water is just for the flow of the glue, right? Like, I'm not losing some extra bit of protection by mixing water in with the pva, correct? So I get the same protection by just brushing the glue straight on but am creating more texture? I'm not a fucking scientist.

>metallic schemes on a large model look ba
Not necessarily true but yeah you pretty much have to do some weathering to make them more interesting, there's a reason why scale modelers go so heavy on that. Sponge some chpping near edges, add oil/grime near vents/exhausts and maybe some rust if you feel like going that way. In all honesty though I myself enjoy the look of clean metallic paints so if you like it the way it is I wouldn't change it just to please someone else

It looks great, with the caveat that you are going for a factory-new look. Otherwise I'd suggest just edge highlighting everything, including rivets, with silver to make it look like the paint is peeling a bit.

The only bad thin are those freehands. I'd suggest adding a few more layers and then fixing blotches by painting that green colour on them. Also I guess you could add 1 more green, unsymetrical line on its chest.

What is the sweet spot for base sizes in your opinion?
How much breathing room do you want around your minis? I've been looking at a few different sizes here for this reaper dragon and all of them kind of make sense if you take the wingspan into account, but the long oval seems slightly too big imo and the 60mm is where it starts to look cramped.
I don't have any 90mm or 80mm, but those might look nice as well. I've seen that there are 90mm oval bases these days, so I could try out as well, but I'd have to order those sizes first. I myself like the footprint to account for the wings as well I think.

On a somewhat amusing side-note Reaper sells this as a large dragon which in DnD terms means it should fit on a 2x2 square grid, i.e. 50mm base max and it's one of the medium sized dragons they sell.
The 75mm would make this huge (3x3 squares) and 100mm base (4x4 squares) would already put this into the realm of a gargantuan dragon as per the rules, which is the biggest creature size possible.
The 120x92mm is the size that goes under the GW Mesbg dragons, that's why I tried that out here for comparison.

How do you guys pick and choose for minis that don't come with a suggested base size?
>>

I'm not expecting you to by any means (please do not feel obligated), but I wanted to be sure to let you know not to send it to the original return address if you did intend on sending me something. Not sure if going from scales straight into farsight after painting a single smurf was the best idea...
Having a lot of fun, but the precision required is higher thans with scales which surprises me. The oftentimes smaller details in an already generally smaller model and with less room for errors due to all the weird feonetry is hard

This reninds ne of what bothers me mkst about this nodel, not a remark on your work, but on the model design. Why in godsname did they decide to make the two parts of the jet in such a way that the joint runs along the intake vent? There isn't even a way to fix it because you can't really stick spruegoo (or equivalent) into there without mucking up the piece, and even if you did manage, you can't really reach it to sand it down for a nice finish. Iirc not even on the boxart did they work away that seam.

Picrel, very much wip. Right now I get 15-20 minute paint sessions here and there due to business in life, so it is slow going.

>>94431540
It really bothered me as well, and I considered filling it with plastic cement and then sanding it, but like you say, the intake is basically impossible to do without that becoming a project in and of itself. It would take hours of sanding down with a toothpick sized bit of sanding materiak, and any fuck up during that process would take even longer to correct. So I decided to leave it as is. The best option would be to simply cut it out entirely and replace with a selfmade mold.

>>94431549
I mean, I don't think it looks shit, I am really pleased with it so far in fact. I was just remarking on a difference between scales and minis that took me by surprise. It sometimes feels that small details are made almost impossible to get to, e.g. the area between the "crotch" and the upper leg, the hip joint if you will, is high impossible to paint, the area around is is equally hard to tape of, I am more or stippling on the metal paint taking great effort to not nick the surrounding parts I want to keep red. It is something you find a lot less of in scales IMO, parts are either much easier to access or they are much easier to MAKE accessible. My 2ct blogpost take on it anyway.
>>
>>94431343
Ya, I wouldn't call farsight beginner friendly AT ALL, if anything it is one of the more advanced/harder models of the GW catalogue, in part because it is quite a "clean" model so mistakes will stick out like a sore thumb, and in part because it is (I feel) overengineered with too many fiddly bits, we are starting to see more and more if it as CAD gets better. It may look nice at zoom factor 20 in blender, but it doesn't always translate we'll as a mini

So...what are the essentials to start out with oils? Just some tubes, white spirits, and a couple of brushes? For colors, should I just start with some black and brown and try out washes, or jump in?

For these and knuckles they get a very light sanding stick then plastic cement in the direction of the coils to melt the rest and smooth it back out.

I bought that exact set and I tossed them in the trash after 2 minutes. Just get some large decent red sable brush to be your workhorse.

gloss varnish helps too. The oils will stain more matte finishes and you won't properly be able to clean them off.

Yeah, I was just checking online, I remembered about them after posting. How are brands? Should I start out cheap to get a hang of it, or go all in with some nice stuff? I fear that getting the cheap, subpar stuff at first might then force me to throw out most of it when I upgrade, is that the case? Or is even the cheap stuff usable?

Painting a felgor ravagers kill team. Only have one painted, still need to base it. Zenithal sprayed, but I’m wondering if I should be zenithal drybushing instead of spraying, I feel like I’m not seeing enough of the contrast from the contrast paints, at least on the fur. Otherwise I’m using these guys as a testbed for skin tone contrasts and contrasts over different base coats, and mixing colors. Flesh tearer red mixed with screaming bell makes a nice metallic red

Cheapest artist grade oil paints like winsor & newton is fine, especially for darker colors. Student grade paints tend to have weaker pigmentation and the pigments arent ground as well, so you get little chunks of pigment in the paint. The little chunks can rip your paint or smear, so for $2 a tube more you can ignore the problem entirely. Colors like ivory black, burnt umber (desaturated brown), van dyke brown (little more saturated and warmer), dioxizine purple, or indigo all make good oil washes depending on what colors you want. I'd start with a black and one of the browns, they should also be easy to find given they are common colors. I never liked qtips and found them harsh, I prefer bulk makeup sponges (foam wedges). Each wedge gets cut into 5 or 6 little squares or rectangles for easier getting into small spots. For brushes I prefer white taklon synthetic that you use for watercolors, softer than golden taklon with less snap for softer corners and less "scraping" the wet oil.
>>
>>94432232
So synthetics are better for oils?
>>
>>94432256
The white spirit is really harsh on natural hair brushes, so you can use natural hair but be prepared for them to not last as long or need some extra TLC. If you get more into painting with oils then an old natural hair brush is fabulous as a blending brush. Something like an old round that doesnt hold a good tip anymore or a filbert that is slightly splayed are really nice for blending. Another brush that is nice for oils is a liner brush, size 1 with a good tip short or medium length for pinwashing.

40kg seems more concerned about the gameplay atm so I'll ask here.
Would this scheme applied to a whole Chaos Knights army look absolutely fucking awesome and at the same time good on the tabletop as a unit?
Is it too gimmicky across an entire army?
>>
>>94432388
It may be me, but works like that usually catch my eye and make me say "oh, neat", but then I get bored of looking at it soon after. I imagine that a whole force of models painted all in the same way may be the same. It's like you have a whole army made of singular spots that clash against each other to get your eye's attention, and you end up filtering them out completely. Like ads.

Do remember that the juggernaut is just the mount to the real character on top of it.
>>
>>94432388
What, the cooling magma look? It would look great on a handful of CKs, maybe a Rampager and some Karnivore buddies but it'd get old across an entire army.

Depends on how chopped up the model is. Good engineering can mean mold lines only on edges or straight parts of the model, but may mean more assembly. Kingdom Death is quite good about this if you look at their sprues. You do have to align the mold plates somewhere, so there will always be a line.

There's really no excuse for what GW is doing now though, its mostly laziness, and them trying for minimal assembly required. A lot of their snap-together stuff still needs to be glued anyway and has gaps in weird places.
>>
>>94432487
It seems that's a sacrifice you have to make, the darker and duller the miniature the better the glow.
>>
>>94432502
The push fit stuff requires you to cut the pegs down to avoid those gaps which kind of defeats the point of making an easy to assemble model look good
>>
>>94430609
Stop basecoating like a Noob
>>
>>94431865
Ya, if I could it would have been in more subs, but then I'd have had to drill holes to glue paperclips in to hold them by and I wasn't up to that.
For edge highlight I am not sure how to tackle that on a model like this. I considered leaving the edges as is, I have considered going in with a bright red to make them pop comic bookish, and I have considered going the route of weathering (so making the alumium undercoat show through with a focus on edges and corners). Haven't decided yet, so any input is welcome. I'll be busy finishing the bright aluminium baselayers for a while anyway.

Check out some scalies on youtube (WW2 planes nearly all get SLAPPED with oil).
Then get, if you want to go with the cool kids, Abteilung. If you want to primarily weather, blacks, browns, yellows and greens. If you want to go minimal, black and burnt umber.
A big gallon jug of spirits for oil paints (called different things around the world).
A metal cup/palette for easy clean up
Some brushes dedicated to oils (get a finetipped one so you can be precise with the initial application, oils isn't only about using old brushes to feather with)
Personally, and this is the biggest barrier to entry, I wouldn't bother unless you have an airbrush. You generally want to have a highgloss before you oil weather and then another varnish (which depends on the look you want) to seal in the oil.

As usual I'll link some James Wappel vids, he does long form oil painting stuff on twitch and reuploads to youtube. He is a fantastic repository of knowledge but its given in such a meandering way that it can be a little hard to follow him. He'll be talking about a movie he watched the night before and in the blink of an eye do some black magic blending making you rewind a couple times to see what he did. He uses a lot of different paint colors but there's no need to match one for one, getting a basic starter set and messing around with it is a good first step. Oils have their own quirks that are different from acrylics, so its just learning a new approach.

As long as you have a good mix of colors and (more importantly in my opinion) a mix of opaque/semi opaques with transparents and semi transparents you're good to go.

https://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-newton-artists-oil-colors/?item=00461-1010&

This is the set that I first started with a grabbed a few other colors to supplement it, this will give you some good workhorse colors (ivory black, titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt umber, indian red) that you can build off of depending on what you want to paint. Other good workhorse colors are zinc white (semiopaque white for mixing, titanium white can get real chalky when mixing), lamp black (opaque black), terra rosa (opaque orange red, great starting point for rust or skin tones), magenta, dioxizine purple (desaturated) or madder purple (more saturated and warmer), and van dyke brown (warmer brown). I would honestly start as cheap as possible since oils are a different approach and some people don't enjoy the process. It takes a couple days for the paint to fully dry and maybe a week before you can seal with varnish, and you'll need to let paint sit for a little bit before you blend it in. Some people don't like the waiting time but it works great for me with my fucked up back and hip. If I get a muscle spasm and need to stop and stretch I can put the model down for a bit or pick it up the next day and can still work with the paint. I also keep my oil palette in the freezer between sessions, opaques can last for a month - 1.5 months and I've had transparents be fine for 2 months in the freezer if sealed well. I can mix custom colors and have them usable for the entire project.

I'd say find your average dude, keep the rim of the base just on the inside of his arm span (not including weapons), and then keep the same general ratio for the bigger models. Obviously, this won't work for stuff like that dragon or any vehicles (which have substantially more/less reach by comparison). I know people care about game balance and all that when it comes to base sizes, but aesthetics always seemed more important to me.
>>
>>94429985
I would spray varnish before the webs, add a bit more goop around the holes (I'd say green) and when you're putting the webs on, add a bit more on the left side and maybe some broken strands.

10/10 looks like the start of a horror movie tho
>>
>>94432856
The gun kinda seems like it's stolen, doesn't fit the scheme very well, since it's dark purple contrasting against a brighter white/teal combo. Certain colors will always work, like black and white, but if you're combining two widely different colors like this, they should still be a similar level of brightness/saturation, imo. If you did make the gun a lighter purple as the base, or even made it actually black, I'm sure it'd look fine.
>>
>>94430273
It works for a "very clean" look or like other have suggested, do some weathering with sponges. If you still want a clean look without weathering, mixing in a brighter/lighter metallic paint like gold or silver with your base metal works really well as you apply it like a volumetric highlight, especially if it's finished with a wash

Does anyone have experience using those cheap airbrushes that aren’t hooked up to a compressor?

I’ve got some vehicles I’ll have to paint up and I’m half tempted to buy one so I can give them just a quick basecoat and simple layer highlights. this is how you are supposed to paint a miniature.
>but layering slightly thicker paint is never as clean as I want it to be and idk what I'm doing wrong in order to fix it.
Literally don't do thick coats. Doing thick coats is what is wrong. That is the problem. If the paints you have do not have sufficient coverage for what you are trying to do you could try a different approach (prime a color that helps you out with coverage or do another base color first) or try paint from a different manufacturer (similar colors might use different pigments or pigment densities or mixtures, so opacity can vary).
>>
>>94433875
You fell for the citadel meme paints by the sound of it, where they mess with pigments and medium so the paint can do one thing very well and all the other things poorly. Layer paints are for adding layers, not for base paint, not for painting over other colours, not for shading, not for contrasting etc.. If I've uktrasmurfs you can use the layer range of blue paints to add depth to the blue baselayer. You can't, however, take a red layer paint and use it to make one of the ultrasmurfs shoulder red, the coverage will be shit.
>>
>>94432745
NGL, I don't like any of those, I think they look messy and have 0 colour coordination.

A white marine on a white base is also not gonna look that impressive. Give him a base of any kind or even just paint the space between his legs black to really see the marine itself better. You might be surprised how much of an impact the base has on the finished result.

I am trying out a new kit with a test model, Please vote:
>Push through and do a full guy in one night's work

Normally one guy would take three nights (1.5 hours each night) if I had never painted someone from that kit before. Once I get used to a kit I can go faster.

Squidmar is objectively a very good painter but his channel is click bait and maximizing profits, very shallow.

Midwinter is annoying as hell and there's something off about him, just a veneer of face niceness about him. Seems like a smug cunt. Same thing with Goobertown, I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he had bodies hidden on his basement.

Miscast I can stomach just about. Miniac is a very stereotypical soi millenial who is an above average painter, but also not as good as he thinks he is. Very cringey, though not as bad as Goober who I just fucking despise.

I did a third head practice. I unironically think it's worse than the first one, I think I didn't do enough of the midtone and the creases are too dark on the front of the face. but I'm trying not to spend more than about an hour on any of these so I'll just try and do better next time.

That said - how autistic am I being about this? I included a series of shrunk/resized images that are a bit more realistic in terms of how they would ever look to the eye even close up. I'm not sure how harshly I should judge my blending and shit on a camera where I can zoom in so far I can see the decal printer resolution start to get jaggy. Not to say there isn't room to improve, but if you zoom in far enough you'll always find something to complain about.

I actually like the Tau head quite a bit. He looks suitably alien, and I dislike when they are painted bright blueberry. The drab tone suits him.The third head is the only one I'd be critical of. The highlights on the face, forehead, mouth and nose are just a bit too stark. It works well enough for the sides and back of the head, but it looks a bit too segmented as anon said.

Not exactly underwater but I simply wanted to avoid generic bases that would fit anyone and do something that would make someone looking at one think "yea, these guys are from ocean planet". Troops in question are literally named "amphibian intervention team".

Ok I've been trying out glazes and it's really cool compared to just layering more opaque colors, if time consuming, but what I don't get is: if I can have smooth transitions by glazing, why and in what situations should I wet blend? Seems like a whole lot of additional trouble for similar results.

It's theoretically way faster since you're just putting down two colors wet at the same time, getting the look you want and then waiting for it all to dry once instead of doing many thin layers and waiting for each to dry individually.

Master g233 airbrush is a great workhorse learning airbrush. Comes with 3 needle/nozzle sizes and uses standard fittings, somewhere around $30 - $40.

that would be ~2mm thickness. Should be easy enough to find. You can sometimes find thicknesses like that in hobby/crafting and one dollar stores.
If you apply some wallfiller to the cork and let it dry you can introduce some gnarly looking cracks. To widen them up and weather the road so to speak you just need a toothbrush or wirebrush.
godspeed, anon.

Hugs and kisses friend, thank you kindly.

This was my first airbrush, I was pretty rough on it but it was great for priming and some detail work. Have a badger now for detail but would highly recommend those master brand ones for beginners.

I think different colors would be best for a varied look.
Blue, green, red, yellow, purple.
Centered around each chaos God and their color.
If it’s a straight khorne army it would be that red which is great for leaders but would be tiring for the whole army.
