Getting back into painting after putting it off for a few years. A certain Brother may or may not have just been primed...
>>
>>94484948
>Moooooom, Aiden covered me in spray paint again!

On another topic - anyone else feel like they spend way too much time fussing with building and prep? Like there's got to be an easier to way deal with mold lines. I'm going to get some #10 blades that might be able to get into annoying places to scrape better than #11s can without risk of gouges.
>>
>>94484971
Depends what I'm working on. If it's gunpla or a model kit, I'll sand and polish it. But if it's a miniature, I just scrape it off with the back of a knife. It might be visible under all the paint, but no one is going to see with how small they are. For a big monster or something, I might sand and polish as well. But infantry, nah fuck that.
>>
>>94484971
Every time I rush cleaning and prepwork I come to regret it down the line.
>>
>>94484971
I fluctuate between wanting to prep thoroughly and hurrying it up before I lose interest in painting.
>>
>>94484738
Anons, I use greenstuff for doing some sculpting, but I need some kind putty that becomes harder and let me to make smaller, sharp details that I can file away.

which one should I buy?

Update from my foam not being delivered that I mentioned in the previous thread.
>Complain to the seller that it never arrived
>They tell me to contact the delivery service
>Contact them
>They send me a photo of where they put it
>Check there and everywhere else but it's still not there
>That means someone stole my foam
>Just went to dump some stuff in the communal bins for the building
>The parcel was opened and in there
Some dumb fuck in this building stole my parcel, opened it, realised it was fucking foam and then threw it in the same bins we all use. Peak petty crime.
>>
>>94484971
I clean even the mouldlines I know for a fact won't be visible, so I guess? I'm not big on assembling overall but I still try to do it properly
>>
>>94484971
I just leave the mold lines as they are, I barely even notice them, the spot where parts connect is even more visible, but I don't care about that neither.

Holy shit.
I don't know about your country's laws, but in mine, the seller is liable for the package arriving safely at the buyers place. He can't just say "Not my problem, call the delivery service", if it does not arrive, he has to send it again or refund. Then again, delivery services just dropping off packages in public places is wild, they did not even deliver the package to you in my opinion.
>>
>>94485382
Oh shit, I guess I'm finally gonna get a KDM mini.
>>
>>94485390
Oh yeah for sure. The delivery service is one of the shittest ones we have. They didn't message me or send me a photo of the delivery until I asked for it. Amazon would have refunded me if I fought it which I was going to. But now that I have it, I don't care. I just told them the deliverer is shit and didn't leave it in a safe location and I won't be buying from people that use them again.
>>
>>94485382
Is KDM actually any fun to play? It seems mildly interesting but Idk much about tabletop games desu. It just seems a bit more self contained and structured than something like warhammer or D&D which is mildly appealing to me.
>>
>>94485410
I literally don't give a single fuck about the game, I just like their coomer minis
>>
>>94485410
Never played it, but it looks like a pretty standard dungeon crawler or boss battler board game, just with lots of good minis. Unless you're into coop board games, it's probably not worth it.
>>
>>94485439
I've read people describing it as tabletop monster hunter which honestly sounds pretty fun but never had a chance to try it either
>>
>>94485446
You could also just get the table top monster hunter game.
>>
>>94485397
It still blows my mind that in US it's legal to just leave a package at someones front door and call it a day

It's legal in the UK but the delivery company is liable unless they have your prior agreement. My buddy is a delivery guy and he says basically you're risking your livelihood just dumping stuff but an amazing number of them just don't give a shit.

More elves, white and black is done and starting in on the purple. I'm gonna try and blitz these tonight and finish them off before their first game on Sunday.

Not looking forward to the pom poms, probably should have dry brushed them before I painted anything else.

Just sell in ebay 90% of what you have an keep only the things that you really are going to paint. Make a calendar with little objetives that you can complete weekly without burning out and stay painting every week until you got all the stuff done. Don't buy again until you painted all and treat the act of buying new stuff as a reward for acomplishing your objetives, not as coomsum to get dopamine burst.
Motivation is a psypop, do what you must until it becomes an habit and really enjoy it. Learn to enjoy the hobby, not buying.
In few words, just retake your will.

Pic unrel.

Don't but anything else until you're done.

For that many I'd go tabletop quality for everything but centerpiece characters. Get yourself an airbrush and batch blast them. Fortunately power armour does allow for pretty good results with simple zenithals or even the dreaded slapchop.

That way you can see results quickly and get things up to a decent standard. Even if they're only tabletop quality you'll have a tabletop quality army which is more than you had when you started.

Here’s my friend’s Tyranid Tervigon he wanted me to share since he doesn’t use 4chan and I’ve been telling him this mini kicks too much ass not to show off. We’ve been following his progress over the last few days from building up the green stuff-made bursting effects, multiple levels of airbrushing, custom basing and more. I figured everyone here would enjoy checking it out and join me in being jealous of how creative it turned out.

I know the paint is too thick, and I'm working on improving it. That said: is the gun too bright? I was going to stick with a darker teal but ended up painting over it and liking the shade. I've attempted my first camouflage as well and finally got a fine tip brush with which I will try to add more details. I gotta say, knowing my skill level and previous track record, I am rather happy with how it turned out. The "camo" is just really messy smear-type brush strokes of olive, brown and green and adding details like the red on the scar or the white on the beard really make a huge difference. Glad to be happy with a mini, since the last 3 I did I thought were way below even my standarts.

Uhh, yeah, this isn't on purpose haha. I just don't know how to paint eyes. I went with the skin color over the entire head and left the eyes as they are, I think it's just an optical illusion, because of how the light falls or maybe the mini is just designed that way.
>holy shit that is beatiful
Th-thanks, but no need to exaggerate haha, but thanks, I am happy with him too, for my level this one is the best since 3 or 4 miniatures while also being the fastest, I think cause I finally got a fine brush to add some details and used more than 1 color on the clothes it came out that way. He'll definitely become a protagonist in my solo RPG.

It may be stupid but i'm actually really proud of how smooth and nice the red looks on this model.
I'm conflicted in the loincloth though, i was considering either a basic cloth with a Chaos star, or break it up a bit and make it a piece of banner from one loyalist chapter from the badab war. Maybe novamarines, since they're dark blue and white

I asked this a while ago:
I really want a portable way to contain lots of paints (or even other hobby supplies) because even though I have some desk space dedicated to hobby stuff, I can't justify taking 60% of it up with paint stands.
Tackle boxes are commonly stupid but could work depending on what I can find.
Somebody suggested a sewing kit, which seems like it could be an interesting option, but I couldn't really find a good example of what they meant.

What are your recommendations for portable paints and hobby kit?
>>
>>94489761
Thanks man. How different is that material from the old spongy(?) clix stuff?
Also, what % IPA did you use? 99%, or will 91% suffice (asking since that's what I have on hand for cleaning various stuff)

Hey folks, it looks like Green Stuff World is having a Black Friday sale and while I know a lot of their stuff tends to skew on the 'cheap quality' end of things, I was curious if there are any hidden games you'd recommend since it is a sale.

I was already considering getting some 3D-printed weapon/missile effects, but I'm always down to bundle some stuff if it's a flat percentage off.

I'm the anon that recommended the sewing kit, this is what I was envisioning. They also make larger ones that are free standing if you have more room, doesn't that much floor space and it accordion folds out when you need to grab something.
>>
>>94489819
The IPA I have is apparently 100%, so must be 99%. No idea what the clix ones are made out of so I couldn't tell you. You could just test it out on one model first. Check in every hour or so and see how it is.
>>
>>94489842
Their 3D-printed stuff is generally small but okay. If you can't print your own, I don't see a reason why not get them. The rollers are also pretty good, but their store has a tendency to send you incorrect types for some strange reason.
But the thing I have from them that is just awesome is the "roll maker." If you make (or want to make) your own pipes, cables, ropes, tentacles, etc., from the green stuff, this makes it really fast and really nice. And the results are just fantastic.

I also have some of their basing sets, and they are okay. Especially if you are too lazy to gather your own resources for bases.
>>
>>94489854
Ugh, I'll get some 99% then. And yeah, failing all reliable confirmation I plan to test on a less important model first.
>>
>>94489863
>The rollers are also pretty good
I don't know if they fixed it or it differs from roller to roller, but I had one of those and it sucked ass, leaving noticeable traces of 3D-print lines on the rolled bases.
>>
>>94489863

Ah, it's unfortunate if their 3D-printed stuff isn't the best. I simply don't see the need just yet for a 3D printer (lord knows I have a backlog of unopened minis) but getting some weapon effects sounded fun. In this case I'll pass and instead check out Etsy for independent providers of 3D-printed effects.

Thanks!

To clarify, that's in relation to the maintenance of the factory floor and the machinery. This lady from the union outlines the 3 main grievances https://bsky.app/profile/cgtcatalunya.bsky.social/post/3lbxf5taocs22
>Poor working conditions and the danger that workers suffer in terms of facilities and machinery.
>A salary increase (since the gap between managers and workers is abysmal and we are experiencing a precarious salary in our lives) of 15%. The company has said no to all negotiations.
>Additionally, we ask for an active harassment protocol that protects us and that works correctly.

Yeah I bought giant bottle of it off amazon or something years ago and used it to strip the paint off like one model and then never touched it. But I've been using it so much recently. I mean, their 3D printed stuff is absolutely adequate. The prints are high quality, there are usually no visible marks or deformations. Picrel, their skulls, for example, I like better than GWs. And they are cheaper. It's just looking at it from a perspective of someone who can print his own stuff, it's generally a bit pricey, imo.I can also make you a pics of their natural stuff.

Is there any value in doing a soap and warm water bath and then air drying a mini(plastic, not resin) before it's first paintjob? Will the primer adhere better? Will the skin oils of handling be significant enough to matter? These are fresh mini's, not stripped.

for plastic is usually not needed unless you handled it a lot like when doing coversions or putty work, but it never hurts either

You have to blow 50 euro to get the deal but I have a few of their 3d prints to use for base deco and they are pretty decent. Still attached to the supports so they are safe during shipping, only one of the 6 blisters I got had a part that broke free of them. They seem to be kind of multi scale, the smallest to middle a good size for our hobby 28-32mm figs, and the larger ones would be good for very large models. The shrooms for ex. are much nicer than what I would have been able to sculpt but the larger ones are pretty big for a regular sized model, but should fit okay on something like a dragons or giant spiders base.

Also, get their metallic pigments if you need some good metallic 'paint' that would never dry out on you. I have the gold and it's awesome.

Their other basing materials are pretty much the same as other quality materials from elsewhere.

>>94487240
Gesso. Thinned 2 drops of distilled water to every 4 drops of gesso. Gloop it on but not too thick and watch for puddles, it shrinks as it dries but puddles still look bad. After about 6 hrs drying time do a second coat the same way. I recommend you prime a chunk of sprue to see how it works and how thick you put it on first.
>>
>>94484971
I don't have a problem with moldlines unless I batch painting a full unit, it's pretty tedious then but I still do it. I just do each piece starting at one sprue clip spot all the way around. Even though I take care, I still miss one or two now and then. and Yes I will scrape it primer and all if I catch it and reprime the spot.

Okay anons I have a question, and even though I dont airbrush or paint, the question is related to air compressors used for air brushing. I have taken interest in it before due to having 3d printers and seeing alot of useful (at least looks useful) stuff you can 3d print for this hobby.

Anyways, I wanted to buy an air compressor with air tank (initially, I believe changed due to what I have found online) because I just wanted to have compressed air and some of these have auto stop when not in use or it turns on when in use, but I just plan to use it as a air dust blower for various things, maybe in the future at some point I plan to experiment with pneumatic pistons but like simple ones nothing crazy that needs a lot of compression or whatever.

Since I live in an apartment, noise level was also a factor, and I was wanting to know what are your thoughts on these portable air compressors? I am open to suggestions for alternatives.

Just get this thing. It's a mass produced Chineseum air compressor that's been the workhorse of the hobby world for years. There's no limit to the companies selling the thing so you'll probably be able to find one you like. I live an apartment and use it to airbrush. No complaints yet, but it's loud enough that I only use it during the day. I wouldn't turn this on at night when it's more quiet. But it's way more quiet than a vacuum or a blender or other household stuff you use.

It's a niche product, but their window decorations (for windows of Warhammer ruins ofc.) are great and out of laziness it's my go to place for things like rods and sheets of plastic card, little chains, barbed wire etc.

Idk, but are you painting over black?
Also, I don't know how you managed to get that texture but you should probably thin your paints or *something* anyway.
If I had to guess, I would think you're painting it over black instead of light grey, and you did a lot of coats to try and get coverage and didn't give them enough time to dry between layers.

My assumption is that they switched from however they made them originally to 3d-printing them when printers became better/cheaper/more widespread.

So if people praise those roles, it might be that they had theirs for 5+ years?
That said, i should use mine a bit more often.. i haven't touched it in ages.

Boots and Belts/Pouches will become a dark redish brown.
Since Catachans are such old models (and i have a bit of nostalgia for them, hence not using the better "SpaceNam") i will do their gun casings in red.

That leaves the few bits of armor they have. Helmets, Flak Vests and Shoulders on some of them.. I was thinking black or dark grey? Anyone got a better idea?
I'm really lost, and i'm afraid if i use green to match the Jungle-theme, it will be too much together with the fatigues?

Skill issue. Also make sure you turn it upright and squeeze the bottle to clear the tube (preferable in some paper towel) before capping.
>>
>>94492967
It has its issues due to the long and thin noozle, but the glue itself is not worse than other thicker plastic glue.
>>
>>94492972
Just have a lighter at hand to heat the noozle if it is clogged
>>
>>94492991
I just keep a thin piece of wire. The needle is useful enough for larger models to use despite its clogging.

it happens. Either overtightened the cap, too much paint in the cap which lead to too much tightness too or just bad manufacturing batch. Just happened to me with a scale75 bottle while I was shaking it. Do not recommend

add water to the nuln oil and apply it one layer at a time. it will looks less dirty. or just paint it into the cracks as best you can then paint over the raised parts so it doesn't all look dirty
>>
>>94493886
Don't use nuln oil/black wash unless you want black on your minis (like on dark steel/gunmetal or dark colors). For middle/dirty warm colors use dark wash/dark tone/Agrax, for lighter stuff like flesh soft tone/sepia or a flesh wash is better.
If you're not sure, paint a bit of sprue (glue 2-3 pieces into one blob for an irregular shape) in that color to test the wash first. It's a hassle, but better than shitting all over the mini you just basecoated.

You are right, the Catachans (and in particular their heads and arms) can't compete with any modern minis. But that was kinda part of the appeal. As i wrote, i could have used the Spacenam by WGA for modern and better sculpted Catachans.
But when i saw those ugly painted guys on ebay, i remembered how i used them like 20 years ago to convert chaos cultists for my Alpha Legion army, kinda using the same techniques as this guy who sold them used.
So this is more of an nostalgia project, and not really a try to make good looking catachans. (thats a nice idea in itself tho, i have some bodies left, and i might print some spacenam parts and see if they match or not).

Anon where the fuck do you live. Thin usually goes around $12. Half of that in Europe.

>>94497109
Also, you can mix your own. It's very simple, like elementary school tier of chemistry simple. If you do, you can make a 2L bottle of it and it will cost you pennies.
>>
>>94497120
For anyone interested: Thin Cement is basically 50% acetone + 50% butyl acetate. The percentages actually go like 49% and 51%, but that is irrelevant.
The simplest approach is to buy nail polish removers. They are cheap as fuck, and you can get both pure 100% acetone formula and non-acetone, which is either methyl acetate or butyl acetate. Then just mix the bitches together 50/50, and you're done. Do it ideally outside or in a well-ventilated room.
You can make like half a liter of that shit under $10.

After years of avoiding it, I'm trying to force myself to learn how to paint skin so that I can paint my KDM minis when they arrive. It's so fucking haaaard. I think this is probably ok for the tabletop, but I have a lot to work on. I really struggle finding the balance between thinning and coverage. I'm constantly going between having solid transitions that I need to fix and the paint only coming off in droplets.
>>
>>94498683
It looks pretty good to me. The feet look a little too bright but, just an observation.
The thing I have learned the most about painting is that you don't have to stress too much about getting perfect details on something that is intended to actually be used. Nobody is going to pick up your minies off the table and talk shit because you didn't get a perfect gradient transition, and if they do, they are a fucking asshole and you probably don't want to play games with them anyway.
>>
>>94498698
Oh for sure, I've learnt that as well. I'll spend weeks on a mini and then when I put it on the table I can barely see it. This is more just for me. I want to e able to make the non-game minis I have look great.

I'm doing much the same and working though my backlog of minis showing a lot of skin. Painting up a WH ogre at the moment. It's difficult, and i rich up a lot, but I think I'm getting better.
I'm trying out the "Zorn" pallette: using only ochre, dark brown, and red (+ some pure white and black in limited amounts). I'm following a piece of advice I heard and am mixing each shade of skin from scratch instead of lightening what I already have. It's been really good practice, and, while I'm not always able to get the exact tone I want, I am usually able to do something with the mix.
I'd share pics, but I can't treat a photo for the life of me. Even the ones I'm proud of look like shit with this phone.

Do I still thin the paint? Normally I do one drop of paint and one drop of water. would I do that too on the wet palette or just a drop of paint on the sheet and go to town?
>>
>>94499646
It Depends™. You always want to test the consistency of your paint, dry or wet palette doesn't change that.
>>
>>94499646
It's supposed to keep your paint wet, not dilute it. If your paper is too porous, significant amounts of water might seep through, in which case you may need to thin your paint less, but that's not supposed to happen.

To turn problem around, /m/ and /toy/ have frequent posts from people complaining about having to ship precious, top quality lacquer paint, stirred thousand times, from Japan because these "shitty acrylics" absolutely won't do! How can you even consider doing something less than P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y, surface smooth even under transmission microscope! Maybe do the green then put a dark brown or black wash on top of it once dry to get the best of both worlds?
