Okay, well I tried.
chatgpt spoils the joke for people uninitiated:
it’s a physics joke disguised as a meme about posting media.

In physics, especially rotational motion, when you want something to spin (change its orientation), you apply a torque, which is a force applied perpendicular (90°) to the direction of motion you want to change. This is how gyroscopic precession works — e.g., to tilt a spinning wheel in one direction, you apply force 90° ahead in the rotation.

So the joke says:

“You tried to post a spinny (a rotating video), but you forgot to apply the force 90° before the direction you wanted it to appear in.”

That’s a play on that principle — because the image ended up rotated 90° the wrong way, as if the poster “applied torque” in the wrong direction. It’s mock-pretending the accidental 90° rotation is just a physics error in how they “applied spin.”

Yeah, I'm still adjusting that. Here's my reference mockup, I am sort of "tracing" by overlaying the progress pictures over it on photoshop, adjusting transparency and making adjustments accordingly. Is the anatomy on the reference right? I am starting to think the ear might be a bit too far to the left but I'm not sure if I'm overthinking it.
>>
>>96933114
nta, right horn is definetly wonky

>>
>>96932669
It depends on what you are after, naturally. If it is a tabletop, you can call it done, imo. If not, I would say it needs more weathering. What you have is awesome already, but lil things that show that it is an actual vehicle that's being used, like some mud (ideally in the same color as your infantry bases) on those steps, maybe on the turret around the hatch. Some long thin scratches along the sides of the hull when the vehicle went through some particularly rough environment, etc. Maybe a very light drybrush of black/dark brown across the decals to make it look like the paint is getting de-saturated by the environment/sun. Some grime/rust/rain streaks. I would also gently add some fine coarse sand + few bigger rocks around those hover parts, when the vehicle digged into something, which is bound to happen, even with hovertanks. If not rocks, some dried foliage.

I would probably add some extra baggage around the tank, it's a BT tank, so it could be neat to have some swords/close combat weapons hanging around. Maybe some reliquaries and other similar to denote it's Black Templars. You know, make it look lived in a bit. Dudes prolly spend weeks or months inside that thing, after all.
>>
>>96932987
I get what you mean, I just kinda wing it with not a lot of consideration for realism or planning, I def work in the moment t b h. That blue is what I do all my BT edge highlighting with so I was going for a bit of uniformity with them for better or worse.
btw I'm not the anon who responded with (you) that was dregs of the thread stirring shit but it can't be helped

Lancer wip. Did an overall filter wash with enamel through an airbrush today, knocked it back a bit after. Gonna do a few more weathering passes, like rust and some other lighting griming in a few places.

I'll do the bright parts then, hatch windows, plus lights on top of shield etc.
>>
>>96933243
Hey thanks for the detailed response thats actually really good to visualize. I think I will muddy up the treads and maybe try some scratch marks when I come back to it. I was a bit heavier on the streaking grime at one point but I ended up wiping a lot away because I didn't like it as much as I thought. But some scratches and metal weathering might be more up my ally.
Actually crazy how much better that sounds when you depict adding the extra bits like that. I am probably going to ditch most of the ammo crates this came with and dig up some swords and iconography that came from the BT upgrade sprue. Thanks senpai.
>>
>>96933354
Lookin sharp af. Is that insane OSL on those eyes or LED?
>>
>>96933401
Yeah, they're LED's. Housed the battery and switch in the torso, drilled through the neck/head to house the wires/leds. Drilled out the eyes and glued the leds in place behind the holes - that was teh tricky part, so he didnt end up cross-eyed.
>>
>>96933365
People tend to go full retard with streaking grime/enamels in general, while in reality with bigger vehicles like this, you can't just douse the entire thing in SG or something and then wipe and be done with it. It's a lot better to use it in specific locations, use it as a pin wash, of as a filter. Better yet, use it for painting the mud/foliage/debris and surrounding armor panels.

Imo, the cool thing about BT is that you can go pretty wild with all the cool shit they use. If I was doing BT tank, I would be tempted to nail an (armored) skeleton to the front (you know, previous tech marine they took with them so he can crusade in death), glue lil skulls on top of those antennas, add sheathed (chain)swords right next to the tank exits, and probably some SoB greebles all over it, to make it look extra zealous. I love your space marines, they are imo the nicest BT I've ever seen and they mogg the fuck out of GW paintjobs, the vehicles should match the flair.

Blocked out this Vanguard's colors and started on his coat. I'm pretty happy with how he's coming so far. I reversed his coat and pants compared to my rangers to keep the color palette, but it made it a little easier to tell what they are since I like the ranger guns more. I'm not a huge fan of the retro future space rayguns. I'm pretty excited to steal the HH skitarii to round out my collection after the reveals, though.

Depends on the paint, unfortunately. Imperial Fist stains like a motherfucker so even when watered down a bunch it tints things in ways you don't always want to. 3:1 or even 4:1 is a good starting point that will probably get you 80% of the way to what you're looking for.

How do you guys think I should go about making mud for terrain and bases? I thought about shelling out for a vallejo pot but the shipping is killer. Current plan is to mix glue and paint and sand and then paint with gloss since I've seen that recommended on the internet. I've also seen people use real mud but I don't know if I quite trust that, I had a silverfish problem in my last place and I am not risking a repeat under any circumstances.
Looks-wise I'm aiming for something wet and thick looking.

Maybe a dumb question,
Do you guys use any software to mockup metals, reflections, indirect reflections, secondary light sources, etc?
>>
>>96939622
Yes. I use procreate on my ipad to do paintovers for NMM, and OSL on things pretty frequently. Also to plan small adjustments. Like I'll paint, take a picture, and then paint things I want to go in and fix before committing to doing it so I can really check if I like it more or less before making changes.
>>
>>96939637
No I mean like simulate a reflective metal ball, placing whatever colours next to it, see how they would reflect, a light source...
I tried on Blender but idk how to do it and it looks like shit and wrong
>>
>>96939654
Oh. Yeah I've done that too. It's less useful imo, too much setup involved. I've taken STLs and put them into substance painter to get some rough materials with HDRI lighting.
Something I've never done, but considered was taking a photo of a painted model, lit by the color of the OSL, at different brightnesses, and combining them at different distances to simulate the falloff realistically.
But the truth is, the accuracy of this kind of stuff isn't as important as you might think it is.

Why the urge to buy new stuff is sometimes so strong? I just got back from hobby shop, buying paints and primer and when I got past Warhammer shelf, I right away felt strong urge to buy at least one kit. "Oh, I could paint Crusader Squad. Or Terminators, always wanted those. Or Commander Farsight or normal Tau Commander. Or...". And then activated inner voice of reason saying "you fool, you have whole box of primed and ready to paint Infinity minis, there will be Secret Santa with at least few minis to paint, why you throw money away when paints already are not cheap?".

What cause this? Not to mention that when I was a student at university, I would buy (non-minis) kits two or three times per year and enjoy each and every single one. Now, with job and good income (at least for now) I have literal mountains of boxes and no longer enjoy building and painting them. Hell, I had more fun when I picked up spare/optional parts from previous kits, PS sheets and tools and kitbashed plastic girl kit or pseudo-Battlemech. I honestly don't understand that.

Your caveman brain just wants the dopamine hit of getting a new thing. This is why rich women buy 200 pairs of shoes.
>>
>>96940005
You can trick your brain into giving you the same result but without spending money by doing the same intensive shopping for something you have no intention of buying. Go through the process of researching it deeply, looking at all the alternatives, thinking about all the ins and outs of the different options, fantasizing about it etc, but then just never pull the trigger and buy it. Works like a charm.

Your brain wants to acquire new shiny things, but it doesn't care about you having acquired the shiny things. The act of actually getting the shiny thing is unironically the least important part of the journey.

Impulse control is a wonderful thing to have. I can appreciate the hell out of all the gorgeous Nurgle models revealed last night but remind myself of the reality that they seem like a colossal chore to paint at the level I want to paint them instantly quells the impulsive desire to buy them. That on top of cementing to myself that I will only buy what I actually want easily lets me enjoy the hobby without amassing a huge backlog. To me, piles/closets of shame are a personal failure to control impulses. The only downside is that I have had long spells of watching other people get excited for stuff while I happen to have chosen armies that have gotten continually passed over for years. Imagine being the last kid to get picked for kickball teams.

>To me, piles/closets of shame are a personal failure to control impulses

There is also FOMO, some companies have it at worse than the other. I remember how some sets from Infinity never got restocked at my LGS after initial run and how, at different kind of plastic models territory, many Bandai kits are available in Europe only in very small amounts that literally sells out within minutes (while Japan have same kits stocking stores up to the celling - given that Bandai was very anal about their local shops selling overseas, I assume that they just hate dirty gaijins).

>>
>>96941280
I first work out a reference on photoshop like here >>96933114
Then I pick a place to start. In this case I measured the relative position of the eyes and the tip of the nose to the sides of the banner on the reference, dotted them with a pen on the actual banner and started drawing out the shapes. After that every once in a while I take a progress picture, overlay it over the reference on photoshop and see if I need to make any adjustments (i.e. eye needs to go a bit to the right, mouth needs to be a little wider, etc). Once I got to the horns and the hair I could afford to be a bit more freeform since it's not that crucial for it to look like the reference.

I tend to go full retard with streaking grime/enamels in general. In reality when it comes to bigger vehicles like this you definitely should douse the whole thing in SG or something and then wipe it down. Don't just use it in specific locations, such as a pin wash, put a filter on the filter, really slosh it on. Better yet incorporate the overall shading/weathering effect across the mud/foliage/debris and lower panels at the base of the model to ground it and place it in an environment,

I think I can see some paint in the ferrule of the left and right one so that's the first thing you could try to prevent. Don't overload your brushes, don't let paint dry on them when painting and wash them thoroughly after every session. Also, save the ones with fine tips for actual detail work. If you use them to block in basecoats they'll wear down faster, obviously. Just use your old ones or some cheap synthetics as workhorses. People also say you should avoid metallics and washes/contrasts but I use mine for everything and they still last a long time as long as I take care of them properly.

Mimes are harlequins training to take their first role in a troupe and function similarly to SM scouts in that they do scouting and infiltration missions.

Part of why I started to paint with oil. I wanted to try out oil washes compared to acrylic ones and liked the results. That lead to researching more how to paint with the oils I had, got some more colors, found out that I really like painting with them.
>>
I had a dream/nightmare that I was doing my first priming, and the black went on good, but then the white (for the zenithal) came out super foamy like foam soap/shaving cream just completely covering it all thickly. I put them upside down in a wash bin to rinse them and then they all looked like a muddled grey... almost like they were back to bare plastic.

If you aren't brush-soap cleaning your brushes after literally every painting session you have to go in and clean them with alcohol or something stronger semi-regularly (and this isn't great for the brush). Those brushes could be recovered if you did a couple of alcohol soaks, brush-soaped them and let them dry with the tip formed properly.

Things like washes and contrast paints also fuck up brushes, you really have to make an effort to keep the paint in only the bottom 1/3 of the brush if you're using them - but even then you should be doing that with your nice brushes anyway. Never waste good paintbrush lifespan on just painting broad things you could do with any cheap synthetic. Keep your nice ones for eyes, tiny details and fine lines.

Speaking about brushes, I find it quite stupid that I have literal tons of brushes but I'm too afraid to use most of them, thinking that I would only ruin them with use. Like size 6 or 4 high quality red sable. Cup on the left have all unused brushes, half of them being synthetic and other half natural (mostly mentioned red sable, I never really found actual sable for sale, except maybe that daVinci ones that cost so much I wouldn't even dare to touch one).

If someone does a lot of washes or contrast pinlining I can highly recommend getting a synthetic script/liner brush for the purpose. Holds a ton of wash even with a half loaded brush and a nice fine tip make for accurate application.

To add to the conversation the josonja brand brush cleaner is also fantastic for bringing back gunked brushes and general upkeep if you see it for sale.

I already do everything described, except the soaping every session. But I know it's not a paint in ferrule issue. This is a series 7 brush I bought last year and used exclusively as you described, for thin lines, small details, and eyes/faces. Not metals, no shades. Can't even use it for faces inside helmets anymore.
Also, damn, how'd you get such a good picture of the brush? I could not get my phone to focus on the brush to save my life and macro was basically useless.

Excellent freehand anon, much better than I could do I think. I would make some suggestions for depth (these are all slight nitpicky fixes): her left horn looks a bit centered on her forehead, if you bring up the center bunch of hair so that the top crosses over the horn slightly, it would help "move" the horn.
For her looking over the shoulder, I would raise the shoulder line just a bit over her chin. This would put the head back and the shoulder/arm forward consistent with the overall angle, AND it would help sell a seductive look. The chin tucked under the shoulder just a bit sells a slutty, submissive look on that chaos thot

The idol and spider monkey are from crooked dice, the gorilla from otherworld(crooked dice now I think) and the chimps, baboons, and orangutans are from Lucid -eye miniatures.
The four armed monkeys are from Fighting 15 minis (ff15 I think?) and the Mandrill chimera is from Langley models, which are pretty jank but have some nice charm to em

Do you guys think red plates and dark red cloth will look good once this is done, or will it kinda blend together too much?

Right now it's just mephiston red on the plates and Khorne red on the cloth. Will probably brighten the plates up more with evil sun scarlet so that should help, but I'm still kinda trying to figure out the scheme in my head.

Also, I am having a hard time deciding on the metals. I'm thinking bronze for the helmet and maybe more of a brass for the trims.

Also, any advice for colored metal plates? I guess they're meant to be painted steel in universe? Is it worth trying to dry brush with some leadbelcher or something to make it look more metallic.

How vibrant, drab, matte and/or metallic is your yellow gonna look? IF tends to go with red secondary/teritary elements, so I'd probably not bother with that. Honestly, brown might not be bad either with the black, maybe a warm shade of grey, violet could work well but might clash with the black or a more grotty piss yellow. Your guys are pretty much wasp-coded in both character and surface levels, so consider looking at some yellow stripey things for ideas too.

Earth tone. Brown is really just desaturated orange, so yellow/red/black/blue all go well with it. You have some play between something like a light tan to a dark brown, or even a mahogany that has a little purple in it. Earth tones are usually a safe bet, and black/grey/off white fur is also a safe bet.
