for me, it's the Mad Dog
Would this make a good Infantry/Battle Armor hunter?
>>96946674Gone now because they're out of stock. I got the last one. Wish I could've gotten more than one. They're like $70+ on ebay.Grabbed me an old Hi-Metal Shad for a great deal too to make the shipping worth it.
>>96946987Nothing stronger than family.
>>96947009Not bad but it really should have at least one flamer or MG for infantry.Personally I'm a big fan of the Com Guards Shadow Hawk SHD-2Ht used for killing Elementals on Tukayyid.
Which is the better Asian faction, the Draconis Combine or the Capellan Confederation?I want to make a force of bad guys but can't settle on the faction. I like the Japanese aspects of the Dracs, but they do lean into it so hard sometimes it feels like a larp. But the space Samurai stuff is cool. The Capellans are also neat, partially because they seem to lean into hapa Eurasian empire that leans Chinese instead of only being space China, at least based on the Warrior Trilogy books I finish reading. How would you rank their mech selections?
I need a quick reply ASAP if anyone is willing to help: how many special weapons are there in a normal IS infantry platoon? 8? I'm going to use some LRM infantry for the session in 15 minutes and forgot to look it up, help please.
>>96947358Dracs are straight up fun badguys. They revel in their badguyness like Saturday morning cartoon villains. Plus, bonus fun of killing clanners, the even worse badguys. Most of their mechs are gimped in primary configuration, but randomly have good variants later.Caps are fun in the 3020s when they're scraping by with anything they can. After Sunny, they just get jerked off too much for my taste. Lots of impressive machines after Xin Sheng, though. Plus, they also kill Stoners which is cool.IMO you get better as a player using Dracs and getting to be Samurai Skeletor is so much more fun.
>>96947084Here's the sold out link.https://www.amiami.com/eng/detail/?gcode=TOY-RBT-8373Also, if anyone cares, the comic version of the Shad kit is on sale for $20.
>>96947358As a FedSun simp who loves the Fourth Succession War, I'd say Capellans. I hate weebs for one, the scrape by and fight like you're cornered for every crumb mindset of the Cappies is endearing to me. As for their mechs, I've always had a soft spot for the Cataphract for the heavier stuff, the Vindicator is a solid medium that can take hits and give it back, and the Raven is just the perfect Cap mech. Small, fast, easy to put together, and jamming everyone to get away quick or help their buddies wipe out the enemy. It's the Confederation personified.
>>96947397Nevermind, I found the sheet.
>>96947398What's life like for the average Drac? If BT is the future of the 80s, is it like 80s Japan?
>>96947582Dracs are weebs so it's not like real japan but the corporate sector and yakuza are 80's japan, the military is WWII Japan, and the culture is 80's samurai movies.Average Dracs have tons of different cultures and come in every color of the rainbow. You just better HONOR THE DRAGON. You better do the Japanese window dressing in higher society, though if you want to hobnob with the movers and shakers.Oh, the secret police ISF and O5P stuff does suck, but the Capellan MASK is worse in that department.
>>96947582Near the megacorp facilities, probably (with a big dash of 2000s China tier polution and workplace safety laws). LAW City is downright cyberpunk. But the Dracs are more broadly based on WW2 Imperial Japan, so that's the more relevant model for the average Jō.
>>96947000why is it mad thoughwhere's happy dog
>>96947666Clans killed it, being happy is dishonorable. The great founder was never happy.
>>96947618So as long as you honor the Dragon and act Japanese, you're a Drac? No ethnic problems or whatever? Can regular people become MechWarriors or do you have to come from a noble family?
>>96947745Buddy, their top ninja clan is a bunch of irish dudes. The clans fear the ginja.Like any state, basically anyone can theoretically become a mechwarrior as long as they can afford to go to academy. The issue is in 3025, for everyone, is federal machines are only about 5% of forces, which means 19/20 mechwarriors are people who own their machines, usually nobility.Kurita is also known for having the highest percentage of noble mechwarriors even after that changes for most other states in the 3050's. You better be damn good if you are no noble. That doesn't count the commoner plants the ISF puts in classes like Teddy's wife. So you got to compete against that, too.
>>96947786>irish ninjasWhat's the clan name, O'Connell-kun's Ninja?Sounds based tho. Does owning a mech basically turn you into a noble?
>>96947825>Does owning a mech basically turn you into a noble? You are called a Mechwarrior Knight in the whole inner sphere for a reason. You also lose your lands if you become dispossessed of your machines. Prior to the 3050's, anyway.>>96947825>What's the clan nameNekogami, the cat gods, because you are in weebland and you will weeb harder for the honor of the Dragon.
>>96947825>Does owning a mech basically turn you into a noble?Violence is the ultimate form of authority.
>>96947825In most states it at least opens the door. Trading lands for service is a pretty normal thing, a citizen mechwarrior can go be a militia pilot somewhere and be given a nice on-world estate to stage their militia activities from. A mechwarrior who happens to be around might get invited to balls and low-end fancy parties as long as they don't have a reputation for being a troglodyte, and in eras where mercenaries have a good reputation, mercenary officers might even get into actual fancy parties as a guest of interest. If they conduct themselves well and make a name for themselves, third or fourth noble daughters might be on the table for marriage prospects.
How are comstar's level 2s organized int erms of unit roles, what is comguard's combat doctrine? Given that L2s don't seem to be specialized the way lances/stars get are they expected to be well-rounded and self sufficient, or what's the deal?
>>96947858>Have to pick between ejecting and losing your lands or dying in a firesheesh
>>96947909Most L2s are homogeneous, they're just demi-companies. But units of different L2s built around mechs, vehicles and infantry cooperate to form combined arms L3s.
>>96947917There's a little leeway, although it still doesn't bode well. Dispossessed are such a big deal because the established mechwarrior families are still considered mechwarrior families even after they lose their mech. Many Dispossessed never even had the mech in the first place after their dad or grandma died in it. They're given preference by some academies and militaries, a Dispossessed can sign up to be a pilot using someone else's mech much easier than some random nobody. Sometimes they're given opportunities to earn a new mech, like the FWL Liberation Units, or some long-term (10+ years) contracts. You aren't immediately evicted from your family estate, but you are living there on borrowed time. Tick tock.
Does anyone know why the ComStar Battle Level II has been out of print for so long?
>>96948458>So longI mean, I was still picking them up at the FLGS like 3 years ago. You know we used to go like 4-5 years just between main box set restocks? How long have they been out of stock?
>>96947582Like the future, Trumpian US, where people buy snake oil because healthcare is for the rich and government goons grab people off the streets at random.>>96947618>but the Capellan MASK is worse in that department. At least they get ridiculous transforming vehicles.
>>96948532I still see them on online stores and even ebay at non scammed prices so Idk what his pro lem is unless hes trying to use the catalyst webstore like an idiot
>>96948709>use the catalyst webstoreNow thats a grade A fuck up.
>>96948709I bought one at a store like three months ago.
What modifications do you guys make to your sheets?I picked up from someone here the idea to add Front/Back armor numbers on the top right. I also like adding the Flechs melee stuff below the weapons. It's handy to know at a glance the difficulty modifiers for not having lower arm actuators/hands, the damage numbers based on tonnage, etc.I'm particularly interested in how you might make notes for heat calculations
>>96948893I usually write to-hit modifications in the margins next to weapons, including for things like arm actuator hits. Heat modifications like engine hits or environmental stuff goes next to the heat scale as +5 or +10 or whatever. Lost heat sinks go above that annotated as -1 sink
>>96948709Link to a eBay at nonscammed prices or an online store that has them in stock
it’s so infuriating how confident people are about being absolutely wrong
>>96948956who are you subtweeting anon
>>96948966Someone anon can't actually formulate an argument against, so being a passive bitch and not actually responding to that comment lets the little faggot feel like they got the last word in.
>>96948983They did.
>>96949006Not if I get it first... last.>>You're wrong.
>>96948893Not much, the built in options for Megamek solves my problems. I am in the process of updating pictures to my favorite designs.
>>96949032This. I love the chart options in megamek when printing record sheets.
>>96949032I have an issue with Megamek seemingly not respecting my font choice when exporting the PDFs for printing. Not sure what's up with that>>96949044While I like the idea of having all the tables in the record sheet, I also enjoy sliding a clip up and down the heat scale. I can normally do that when it's at the edge of the page, but if I included all the tables like this, I lose that. Might try it sometime
>>96949032>Mad 5T>PictureThat's a phoenix design, Snord. Praise Blake for that and your Ost upgrades.
>>96948893I remove the cgl logo, the (tm) beside the name and all the legalese at the bottom. Also swap out the art for a different one I like better, if applicable.
>>96948925https://www.ebay.com/itm/365093120084Open wide little baby here comes the first search result
>>96947358IMO the Dracs fit into the setting better with their emphasis on space feudalism and honorable warrior culture
>>96946987He will fight for the Jaguars on Tukayyid but he will survive. He is only dying on Huntress after a last stand for the ages.
>>96947105It's about family. And that's what's so powerful about it.
>>96949422>>96947105>freebirths mention family near you and your wife's elemental
Solahma clusters are like, youre old and used up so be a garrison or go die in gloy somehow?Do elementals go into them or do they tend not to last long?I assue you, this has nothing to do with figuring out a place to find christmas cake elementals i promise.
>>96948458>Does anyone know why the ComStar Battle Level II has been out of print for so long?>>96949332>Links Comstar Command Level IIAnon you're retarded and and I'm not even the anon who asked
>>96949463>Elemental solahmaElementals are a genetic breed. Solahma are mechwarriors that failed to achieve bloodname. You don't have solahma elementals. For one, I think they have laughably shorter lifespans already, coupled with the stigma of possible mental deficiency.
>>96949463When you get shuffled to solahma as an elemental, you lose your suit most of the time and become heavy infantry. So yes, there's entire units of horny 35-year-old solahma mammas carrying squad weapons in one heand just about ready to hear about the glories of being a waifu with freebirth children since they will never earn a bloodname and pass on their genetic legacy, otherwise.
Hola sibkin, new here on 4clanner. Please share some spicy meatball memes about the Inner Sphere. Can 4clanners be my personal army?
>>96949492Solahma is a generic for over-the-hill warrior caste in general, not just mechwarriors.
>>96949363It's funny to have the Cappies there, among all the Space Feudalists, trying to survive by harnessing the power of being a interstellar nation state. The point of the Dracs is to show off the political cosplay aspect of BT, I think.
>>96949510I know, but the likelihood is statistically impossible. You can retire at 65 from any profession, but the odds of making it to 65 as a bullet sponge are substantially harder. And if you make it to solahma as an elemental, I'd wager you're a bigger badass than you're being given credit for.
>>96949422It's funny coming from the Clan that put people into summer camps for insisting that freeborn families should be legally acknowledged and enjoy certain rights.
>>96949522Yeah that's why the Cappies are doomed to fail so much. They pretty much have to fail to keep the setting as feudalistic and socially primitive as it is.
>>96949528It's not 65 bro. You're getting kicked down to fuckoff and die duty in your mid-30's. They cycle sibbies every 16-18 years. The command basically gives you until the next generation to do something or crawl in a hole and die. You can also literally see them in TRO:3085.
>>96949546_we_ retire at 65. It was just an anology. 20 years in military service is a LONG long time for an elemental.
>>96949534This. The Ghost Bear definition of family is just "Don't try to wreck each other at all costs like the Falcons or something. We're all Ghost Bears, here.""What about actual breeding normal families?""Fuck them, and exile them to that Stoner shitheap we captured in 3135."
>>96949555In normal clan culture, yes. Then look at the Ghost Bears that sit on their asses for half a century or the Ravens being too busy fucking Davion Princes to do anything for nearly 40 years with no challenge to the power of the upper ranks.
>>96949572>In normal clan cultureThere is such a thing? It seems to me clans spend most of there time trying to find ways around clan culture that wont get them labeled unclanlike.
>>96946987>We are Ghost Bear editionGhosts glow in the dark. Get ready, furfags.
How Long can a Long Tom actually be?
>aboms stumble if they take 20+ points of damage in a turn>any excess damage to a killed member of the unit is lostSo if 2, 3 pip swarmers take an ac-20 shot to the torso each, the squad still would not stumble. Two monkeybirds get turned into red paste for a total unit damage of 6.>>96949784not as long as a Really Long Tom
>>96947398The Caps would be more fun if they were turbo-commies instead of Chinaboo LARPers
>>96949833are they not mega commies?
>>96949555>_we_ retire at 65.>It was just an anology. It’s crazy that you had to explain that to him. It’s all just a race to “um actually” each other and no conversation can even develop.Even in our culture, there are tons of people who expect that success, if it will come at all, must come before middle age. That’s we have people telling these reassuring “such and such famous person got famous at 40” stories.
>>96950072Not so much. Since Xin Sheng, they're feudal China LARPers. They actually went further than the Dracs, with white people getting surgery to look more Chinese.
>>96949784Enough so that it doesn't fit on most 'Mechs and takes up about half the total torso space on a superheavy. Barrel length is probably past 10m, easily.
>>96949833The Caps would be more fun if they'd embrace the Command&Conquer memes. But instead, they're the Fu Manchu Weeaboos.
>>96950273It's too bad there's only like two mechs that use the snub nosed version and one of them is a custom.
Have you ever used recon cameras?
>>96950450tried to use one to spy on ur mum, but she didn’t fit in frame lmao xD
I require a racoon city scenario where 6 BA points defend a complex from waves Abominations until Evac can arrive.
>>96950450The Boomerang's literally the only canon craft carrying the damn thing, no?
>>96949045>While I like the idea of having all the tables in the record sheet, I also enjoy sliding a clip up and down the heat scale. I can normally do that when it's at the edge of the page, but if I included all the tables like this, I lose that. Might try it sometimeI've used an option that puts some of the tables where the unit picture goes.>>96949501>So yes, there's entire units of horny 35-year-old solahma mammas carrying squad weapons in one heand just about ready to hear about the glories of being a waifu with freebirth children since they will never earn a bloodname and pass on their genetic legacy, otherwise.Yes... YES!!!
>>96950569There's some scout vehicles that have it, I think the skulker is one?. When I first read about it I thought you could use it as a budget TAG but it doesnt work like that
>>96949501>the glories of being a waifu with freebirth children since they will never earn a bloodname and pass on their genetic legacy, otherwise.Coomer fantasy. Getting knocked up and having freebirth children is degenerate and would be heaping dishonor upon dishonor for a clan warrior sent to a solahma. This is basically a humiliation fetish fantasy. You want an elemental waifu you take one as a bondswoman like a normal person.
>>96951204Is there a single faction in Battletech that isn't a humiliation fantasy? Hell, isn't the whole appeal of battlemechs themselves a humiliation fantasy?
The Long Walk probably takes place in the same universe as Battletech
>>96951296yes it takes place on a Capellan backwater
>>96951327No, it takes place in the USA after the war ended
>>96951338>Capellan propaganda agent is speakingsure....
>>96951355No but seriously after World War 3 the USA was in a really bad spot economically speaking and was descending into autocracy to mimic Europe's success. That's why they agreed to let themselves be annexed.
>>96949032How do you add those charts on the RS? I mean, where do you click in megameklab?
>>96951360i'm just jerking you bub i dont know too much about pre succession BT storyline doe i'll take your word for it
>>96951225>Hell, isn't the whole appeal of battlemechs themselves a humiliation fantasy?I'm gonna need you to expand on this.
>>96951385Well you have these mechanical superweapons crewed by the wealthy nobility and those with connection to them, which are far superior to any other weapon that can be fielded, and which largely serve to allow the wealthy nobility to absolutely style on the poorfags with their infantry and convees. As an added benefit they even keep the setting in a permanent state of aristocratic monarchy with a side of eugenicist warrior-stratocracy.
>>96951401NTA but.... what the fuck man.I know damn well that plenty of nobles have their own Mech but the vast majority of 'line troops' be they Infantry, Vehicles or Mechs are crewed by absolute fucking normies. The Mech pilots are probably *the best* of the normies which why they're entrusted with a mech and not 'just' a tank, but the vast majority of Mechwarriors in the IS sure as fuck are not nobles. Most nobles probably pilot a battlemech, but most battlemechs don't have a noble in the neurohelmet. You need to stop getting high off your own supply.
>>96951204Coupling the inherent biological clock, abduction themes, and humiliation fetish together is making it clear this was written for the explicit purpose of making women horny. They all have humiliation and pregnancy fetishes, it's why they're all buying dozens of those "abducted and impregnated by the werewolf prince" novels.
>>96951435>but the vast majority of Mechwarriors in the IS sure as fuck are not noblesHence the "and those with connection to them" addition. It's not necessarily the duke of your planet piloting the battlemech, but it is the trust fund rich kid who personally knows the duke and is a part of his retinue.
>>96951466or the duke's butler's kid who scored freakishly high on the aptitude tests
>>96951480I mean a nobleman's butler can be earning millions of dollars a year so that checks out.
>>96951360The US was never annexed, they joined Super Double Ultra NATO ++ after the rest of regular NATO did. They then promptly dominated that alliance until it eventually encompassed the entire planet and became the Terran Alliance.
>>96951491They joined super double nato+ after being coerced into it through economic sanctions and being forced to adopt their cultural and political views
>>96951518No? Based on the criteria for influence and the fact that they did join willingly, there's absolutely no reason to think the US wasn't a powerhouse member with one of the highest, if not the actual most, influence.
>>96951491Iirc the EU was the main force behind the Super NATO turned Terran Alliance, the US was faltering economically at the time, then the TA government was couped by a general to become the Terran Hegemony. The United States never really returned to prominence in BT.
>>96951572The United States had most of the best worlds near Terra. The reason there isn't a space US is because it got blown up in the first succession war.
>>96951561>It was only after the western alliance threatened a boycott of all American products and resources that the superpower agreed to joinSo it did require economic coercion to get the USA to join. And afterwards the USA conveniently agreed the republicanism was actually bad now and tanks and planes were gay, and that monarchy and Japanese mecha were based and we should adopt those instead. Almost as if the US wasn't the dominant cultural power but adopting the culture of more powerful nations that had the ability to coerce it to join in the first place through economic threats.
>>96951572Read, nigga, read. Then go read up on the Lone Star Province of the Terran Hegemony.
>>96951587>tanks and planes were gay, and that monarchy and Japanese mecha were basedThere are no mechs in this period. You would know that if you had read the source material.
>>96951587The Terran Alliance was completely devoid of monarchy. Only after it completely collapsed from a liberal faction winning free and fair elections and deciding to end the disastrous colonial war they'd been losing to guerrillas did it collapse and then some douchebag came to royal power and formed the Hegemony. If you're gonna do this, go read the books.
>>96951601Correct, those required an enormous amount of research and resources to develop, something the US didn't believe in bothering with until after they were coerced into joining.
>>96951613>and then some douchebag came to royal power and formed the Hegemony.By which time American culture had been so eroded and replaced that not only were they okay with this but the monarchy came from their own country.
>>96951617>>96951622Mechs post-date the Alliance by about a century. And saying anyone was "okay with this" isn't really applicable when there was a global civil war that ended with a rebel leader throwing the old government off a roof and calling himself king.
>>96951634That doesn't really do anything to disprove the points being made. The alliance which was the product of coercion and threats would go on to erode and replace American culture enough that you would shortly afterwards have monarchist rebels from America fighting for a king.
>>96951643>shortly after>250 years laterGive it up.
>>96951646Only an American would think 250 years is a long time.
>>96951650How's that horse and carriage treating you? Had a good bloodletting over the weekend?
>>96951655You should know, you're the ones who worship our culture.
>>96951650long enough to kick the rest of the world's ass.
>>96951668And yet here you are, knee deep in a setting about America's downfall and the superiority of aristocratic monarchy where the predominant weapon is not American airpower but Japanese mecha.
What Battlemech would Captain Sharpe pilot?
>>96951675Actually most of the Japanese factions mechs are subpar. Their best ones are hand-me-downs from space America.
>>96951675The reason why it's a scifi fantasy setting is because there's no possible future where freedom eagle dropping McDonald's on rimworlds isn't the reality.
>>96951680Rifleman.I mean, c'mon
>>96951680Only the raddest mech.
>>96951687They're ALL Japanese mechs. Even the ones used by whatever is left of the American worlds are still inspired by Macross and other eastern mecha designs.
>>96949058I love the 5T.I fucking hate the Phoenix Designs though.>>96951374To get the Record Sheet Table options is pretty simple and easy enough. When you have Megamek Labs opened make sure your in an existing unit doesn't matter which then click in the following order File/options/Configuration and then click Record Sheets and Export. There you'll have a buncha options for tables, expanded heat charts and the rest.
>>96951701>all japanese>based on macrossLike 4 designs, dude the setting is more than LAMs.
>>96947000trips of truth, also this gives me the old box art vibe, the whole cockpit one, IIRC it's 3rd ed? shooting at a warhammer.I've always liked the Vulture even if it's an oven. I like just swapping the MLPs for ERMLs and adding ammo/armor/HSs depending on mood.>>96949438Only a clanner would rock a jacket like that.>>96951680I love this show, and the books are just as fun. But first replies win for sure. If you want to read a silly Sharpe, look into Flashman novels it's hilarious, that same Sharpe/ Indiana Jones just being in right place right time over and over and kick ass... but Flashman is a coward and loser and always wins. Good laughs. While we are working on new rules and adapting... can I beg (not that devs read here) can we make the blazer cool or not awful? Even if you're lazy and steal MWO's idea of shed a ton. Frankly I think it's "realistic"Fuck it when I'm drunk posting, put chem lasers in mwo.Hope you all are doing well
>>96951675>setting about America's downfallSpace America (real) is currently running Terra right now.But /btg/ ain't ready for that convo. No sir, not in this life.
>>96951701>he thinks a real american mech would have an erppc and shs
>>96951717The DNA from macross and dougram designs are still present well into the Clan Invasion3058 onward is where I'd say designs start getting away from anime. East vs West mecha design is a false dichotomy anyways. If you don't think Kawamori or Okawara weren't pulling design elements from western military equipment you'd be equally as foolish as assuming the original anime mechs don't permeate into later battletech designs
>>96951687this and
>>96951717>the setting is more than LAMs.There's a lot more mechs in Macross than just LAMs.
>>96951687
>>96951786>>96951789>>96951790Psst. We're being facetious. Also that's barely even a double digit number of mechs in a setting with over 300 known so far.
>>96951577NTA, but didn't the Fedsuns go on to essentially be the US/UK/France of the Sphere?
>Posting about poopy Inner Sphere mechs on 4clanner
>>96951790BT needs to rip off the Cabarov and Mackerel
When the Unseen thing happened, how come the relatively common Ultralights weren't made canon? They were small, lightly armed, and cheap enough to be able to replace the Macross mechs they would replace. There were even Ultralights for every faction at the time.

>>96951889If you're old the lore was VERY space France and England too.Now it went to Merkia. It's a shame because I thought Feddies were really a neat faction before they got thin.
>>96951874So, fun fact. All that shit was 100% canon already. All the "Apocrypha" from the official magazines like Battletechnology and MFNA 'Mech were canon until the collapse of FASA. Their current status is only Fanpro forward.
>>96951743I would argue that aircraft, far more than mechs, embody the American spirit far more. Mechs are more of an embodiment of knights and samurai, big warrior vehicles designed to excel at everything but bound to concepts of duty and honor and chivalry. They are neither pragmatic nor free, but they are noble and powerful. But the aircraft allows you to transcend the very boundaries of gravity and ascend into the stars themselves. It's expensive, especially as a weapon, and dependent upon a prosperous society to maintain and supply it, but when it is well cared for it is unmatched in its potential to destroy the enemies of liberty wherever they may be, with its chief downside being that while it can wreak havoc and leave its enemies a shattered mess, it cannot hold that ground nor enforce its rules. In true freedom fashion it can be the weapon that lays low armies but it cannot be the cop to lay down the law.America's great sin in Battletech was that it allowed cowardice in the face of the enemy to overtake rational thought, and it laid down its freedom to get along with enemies who threatened its prosperity.

>>96952062If CGL was cool, they'd bring them back.
>>96952115They've dripfed some, the Hedgehog is canon as a star league tripod, although its detailed writeup and stats aren't (the record sheet would need to be reworked under the official rules). What faction is most america? Isnt there a texas planet?
>>96952153Fronc Reaches is the most American faction>An actual fucking republic>With an elected president>That uses dollars as its currency>Has stars on its flag>Associated with cowboys>Mostly fights pirates to keep trade going
>>96952163>>96952153Aren't the Froncs getting merged with the Taurians over time?
>>96952177No, the opposite, the Froncs are separatists from the Taurians. The Froncs are basically the Texas to the Taurians Mexican Empire.
>>96952153Coreward Confederacy.
>>96952074I dig it. Also as an American, I just like those colors.
BattleTech is an American dystopia where culture devolves back to European feudalism.
>>96952177They're pretty stable where they are, the Taurians splintered and remembered that the Fed Suns is over there on the far border, the Canopians are deeply uncomfortable with the idea of being an oppressive colonizer so they backed off, and the Capellans got the only thing they wanted out of Fronc, which is the planet Detroit. Pirates are a problem for Fronc because they are unreasonably aggressive against them and openly do not take prisoners, negotiate, or back down where pirates are concerned. They won't even hire shady mercenaries, if you go out there looking for work and can't pass a background check, you won't get work. And if there's any record of you being a pirate, they'll shoot you right there on the floor of the hiring hall.
>>96952181>The Froncs are basically the Texas to the Taurians Mexican Empire. They forced the Taurians to provide a legal carve-out for slavery then staged a revolution when the Taurians outlawed slavery entirely? Then joined another country to bolster the votes of slave holding states in their government, followed by another seoeratist attempt when that country wanted to outlaw slavery?
>>96952209>Pirates are a problem for Fronc because they are unreasonably aggressive against them and openly do not take prisoners, negotiate, or back down where pirates are concerned. That's not being 'unreasonably aggressive', they're fucking pirates, you don't negotiate with them for the same reason you don't negotiate with terrorists.
>>96952218Most people realize that sometimes sentencing pirates to things other than death can be helpful because then sometimes they surrender. Also they won't be motivated to try and overthrow your government. Not Fronc though, they'll shoot a pirate while surrounded by pirates.
>>96952243Pirate hooks typed this.
>>96952243Or maybe the pirates will learn that messing with the guys who absolutely will kill them like rabid dogs is unwise when there's plenty of other options for them to raid that won't kill them.

>>96952486Ask Battle Magic. The tube probably telescopes or something.
>>96952486Don't ask questions like that or why they have to have such ridiculous launcher sizes.
>>96952457I think the Terran Hegemony was more British than American. They were really big on monarchism and feudalism.
>>96952542The impulse to follow an authoritarian leader is a human one that any nation can succumb to. Every republic has a potential Caesar waiting in the wings.
>>96952085are you EVER ... NOT a salty fucking bitch negative nancy fucking whinging cunt?
>>96952426I always thought of it as more like a fever dream of bangkok and saigon from old sea shore leave stories that the authors heard once
>>96952603Sure but an American autocracy would follow an American style. To adopt a feudal aristocratic monarchy is very European, if anything a military junta would make much more sense for the USA.
Are terrains, buildings and etc used in AS more of mech-scale? I bought the AS box set and the paper buildings in the box are hueg on hex map
>>96952623All of BattleTech is feudal and monarchical. It's just part of the fabric. To have the Hegemony be otherwise wouldn't be impossible (since it's dead and everything, maybe it could represent "old world values"), but I don't think anything should be read into it. After all, Communist China and the Soviet Union didn't have an explicit feudal system either, and Imperial Japan's existed but didn't really have any power.
>>96952623>To adopt a feudal aristocratic monarchy is very European>Europeanexactly how Americans would imagine a dystopian future
>>96952630Yes, AS doesn't have map scale anything.
>>96952148I haven't checked yet, but do you know if they'd be legal designs right out the gate? At a glance they don't look like they'd break construction rules.
>>96952656This is also why AS is superior. And why everyone should buy two or even three extra sets of the AS terrain /counter pack.
>>96952486The art and model for mechs whose stock configuration includes MMLs seem to indicate the launcher has two sets of differently sized tubes.
>>96952630>the paper buildings in the box are hueg on hex mapThe mechs in Classic are not to scale with the hex maps either. The AS terrain is more or less to the scale of the mechs, which is more or less 6mm. It doesn't matter in Classic because everything is based on the hex maps and stacking rules, you don't even need the mechs if you have individualized tokens with a clearly labeled front face. AS has pretensions of being a true(ish) line-of-sight wargame so scale becomes more important.
>>96952672No it doesn't.. the WHM 9K model has a million fat tube with exactly 9 tubes.
>>96952678in fact, in order to unfuck any LoS WAAC faggotry or munchkining Ala' 40k dickheads and their endless L shaped 'buildings' etc and other assorted fuckery to deny LoS, Alpha strike features the 'if in doubt, double check with standard cylinders'.that is. you can draw LoS to a unit, OR if the LoS is disputed etc. you can temporarily replace that unit with a standardised measured cylinder template for its unit size for the purposes of drawing LoS.it instantly shuts down LoS fagging.
>>96952666Most of them were built using the normal construction rules of the time, which means that they should still be completely legal. There might be some minor issues with a piece of equipment here or there, but it won't be any of the basic stuff. The Hedgehog wouldn't be legal because at the time there were no official tripods of any sort and the author had to make his own rules for it.
>>96952097Blue, red, and white is still the canon Brigade of Guards paint scheme
>>96952672The art for MMLs usually has the amount of holes the launcher is sized for, but they're keyholed. There's no explanation for what exactly the keyholing does for them.
>>96952736I assume the keyholing is so it can fire two differently sized missiles from the same hole, with the smaller missiles using the narrower part of the hole.
what. NO. LRM's and SRM's are exactly the same size. the LRM's just have much larger fuel stage so their WARHEAD PAYLOAD section is half the size. which is why an srm does 2/msl and an lrm only does 1/msl. and why the LRM is L and not S ranged.
>>96952730Are you suggesting that any mech in red, blue, and white no matter how the colors are arranged is automatically the Davion Brigade of Guards?
>>96952510It would be trivial to do so for the tech level and the relative inaccuracy and low velocity of LRMs and SRMs not requiring a very precise tube. Some missiles launch a little wobbly? All the better to not fly too close and hit each other. It's the loading system that would probably be worse than a constricting launch tube.
>>96952769LRMs are 120 to a ton vs SRM's 90. The warhead would have to be more dense than the propellant by a significant amount (and the warhead is the entire missile body mind you).
>>96952773Yes
>>96951863The Peregrine is conceptually similar to the Mackerel, though the original art was actually a traced over outline from Gunbuster's Sizzler with some Zaku details thrown in.
>>96949406I personally figured he'd go on to become Fidelis or something.
>>96952836no it isn't. the 'warhead' is the 'bullet' whereas the entire fuselage of the missile, fuel etc included is the 'cartridge'. and yes. explosive are almost always heavier and denser than fuel.
>>96952836120 vs 100, not that it matters all that much.
>>96953233The entire missile is the warhead. If you don't know that then you don't know.
>>96952728That was fine until they introduced the jumping and crouching mechs that CGL have themselves said override the generic templates
>tfw if Desert Storm had happened earlier we probably would’ve never gotten Battletech
I have a buddy who’s shown interest in trying Battletech in the past. A local game store has a $60 starter kit, is that a good way to learn this game?
>>96954286Elaborate.
>>96953205I hope not. They should commit to the bit and have all of the Smoke Jaguar destroyed. Take full advantage that the mechwarriors aren't canon.
>>96954332The Game of Armored Combat box? That has basically everything you need to play games with succession war tech (which is one of the most popular eras anyway). They even included the rules for creating custom mechs despite that really not being necessary. I think the only difference to full introductory tech rules is some simplifications in how shooting under water is handled. The starter box with 2 mechs has simplified version of the rules that do an OK job as basic introduction, but are missing a lot of the key elements.
>>96954358All of the technology in Battletech essentially relies on a pre-Desert Storm understanding of weapons technology. It is the reason behind why most of the main battle tanks of the setting are fairly short ranged vehicles, why most of the air support in the setting commits to WW2 style dive bombing runs, the fantastical understanding of electronic warfare, and why a long range missile that can shoot beyond visual sight is so impressive that for a long time it was considered lostech. Because Battletech was written so early most people were still working off of World War 2 assumptions of how warfare between peer powers would work. In fact, if you know anything about the military Reformers (who are most famous for the funny but very wrong Pentagon Wars movie), Battletech is essentially a universe where the Reformers were right.
>>969545811v1 like with the essentials/beginner box is a good way to get the rules down but its also a good way to bore new players to death
>>96954652Is there really that much to gain from noting that scifi doesn't do a great job of actually predicting the future? If anything you should take this in stride, and expect most modern scifi to also be seen as full of holes and errors for what the future will be, and that's fine.I mean we could just find getter energy or something, and then we sure are all gonna be embarrassed we thought otherwise..
>>96954652>ignores 300 years of technological degradation
>>96954869>I mean we could just find getter energyThat's not necessarily a GOOD thing...
>>96954869>>96955050I dont think they are arguing that it makes it a bad setting because it didnt predict the future, but that if Desert storm had happened sooner battletech would not exist at all or be a totally different setting.
>>96955142nta but I think that is one of the things that make “future of the past” settings so interesting, and criticizing them as dumb because “they didn’t;t get it right” is as the other anon implied dumb in itself
>>96955161oh yeah criticizing for not predicting the future correctly is a bit silly. I do think viewing sci fi settings through the lens of "future of the past" makes them a lot more interesting. Theres a similar thing with alternitive history timelines as well.
>>96955142Setting aside any arguments involving the Falklands War, Vietnam War, and other minor conflicts, I'd argue Battletech still would have come out the same without affordable and easily accessible gaming computers.
>>96955194Yeah to really savor BattleTech (and all fiction), we have to think about what *it’s* about; rather than pulling in some irrelevant (to BattleTech) direction
>>96955217>we have to think about what *it’s* about; rather than pulling in some irrelevant (to BattleTech) directionEh, one of the reasons I like Combined Arms in BattleTech is that it reinforces why you can't leave everything to one Super Unit; A secret Basement can fuck up a Mechs day, so just because they can tank hits better doesn't mean their invincible. Also, BattleTech does answer why you'd want ground forces even when you have Ortillery Superiority; You can't just nuke everything from orbit because that kind of hyper atrophic warfare leave you with nothing to fight over.
>>96947947Then what would 5 mechs be in a standard Inner Sphere military formation post-3050? Examples being Vost Lance from Far Country (set in 3056) and Fox Patrol as of 3148?
>>96955591You could call it a reinforced lance or an oversized lance or a lance with an extra element attached or even a star if they're clan wannabes, but there's no standardized IS name for that because it's not a normal formation.
Are there any instances of the abominations having models? Someone said 'cults3d' on some other shitsite, but I'm seeing nothing there.>want a point of gnats/devils
>>96955727Thanks. I also imagine this applies to conventional vehicles as well, whether be it ground or sky? I ask because what would Jerry's Boys (which comprised of 6 Sprint helicopters when the FedCom Civil War started) be considered as?
im tryna into battletech I played a practice game and it feels pretty fun. Is there a pirate faction in this game? I wanna play as pirates. Also elemental battle armor seems neat which factions get access to those?
>>96956024also the links in the OP for tbe factions are 404ing where can I get my intel for this game?
>>96955989Commands that are that small don't even really need formations aside from knowing who's the commander and who's the XO if the commander eats shit, bit they could call themselves a demi-company or in some cases two vehicles form a single unit for an eight vehicle lance, so they could call themselves a short lance or an undersized lance or literally just advertise themselves as six helicopters ready to provide support however the employer might want to use six helicopters. They could even adopt aerospace organization and call themselves a squadron made up of three flights/air lances of two helicopters each.
>>96956024There are pirates all over the place, but they don't have any grand scale factions. There are little pirate kingdoms all around the edges of civilization and small time pirate bands living nomadic lifestyles or on secret moon bases all throughout known space. They're as easy to yourdude as mercenaries are. Factions don't actually matter to the vast majority of players, and almost never matter in the rules, we just like to keep things thematic. Elementals and other battle armor are from later eras, but basically anyone can have it after a certain point. Having battle armor is just a matter of having heavy infantry, having Elementals specifically means having rogue clanners who brought their specific heavy infantry with them to go pirating. It happens sometimes.
>>96956038Thanks again.Been asking about military formations in recent threads because I plan to on installing Megamek on one of my two computers and want to familiarize myself with what's needed to make a military unit when I get to playing BattleTech through Megamek.
>>96952728When I first read that rule I loved it (piss on true line of sight) but I feel like after I read it more closely there was something bad and disqualifying about it. I think maybe it was that even Lights and Mediums used the same cylinder that was heighted to represent tall-ass Assaults? Meaning short mechs could often be denied cover behind terrain that should clearly be providing it?
>>96956179inner sphere use lances(4 mechs). Clans use stars(5 mechs). Comstar uses Level2's(6 Mechs).None of the unit construction rules matter if you're not using custom stuff. If there's a record sheet, it's fieldable and no one really cares where it comes from.
>>96956179As far as gameplay cares, the only thing that usually matters is if the commander gives you some kind of bonus while they're alive and on the field (or if there's a penalty when they're gone) and the in-universe logistical challenges. If you're in a campaign and have a Leopard, transporting that fifth mech becomes a hard question you might not be able to answer.
>>96956144>They're as easy to yourdude as mercenaries are.cool. thats about what I was looking for.
>>96956235You're so close to learning the truth about scale. Are you ready? You play with LOS rules at all, so you might not be, but here it comes heavy and assault mechs are out of scale, most mechs are within 9 to 12 meters tall regardless of weight, only certain outliers like the Banshee actually get much taller. The heavier class plastic models are grossly exaggerated and the metal models were almost never in scale with anything, because the scale never mattered. Alpha Strike having anything other than abstract LOS would make it impossible to play.
>>96956293Your solution to the mech models being overlarge is to use an overlarge template that makes even the smallest mechs even more overlarge?Wow what a forbidden truth. I can see why it's suppressed.
>>96956466I offer no solution, only truths.
>>96955298I’d argue that battletech actually makes a pretty resounding argument against combined arms given that battlemechs don’t really have a counter that reliably works against them
>>96956479>battlemechs don't have a counteraerospace and protomechs and anything en masse. You can devastate a lance with 2 aerospace fighters and then 2 dozen points of conventionals with troop transport. In fact, 2 aerospace, 2 karnov troops transports with 2 or 3 conventional infantry per karnov, and then savannah masters or mechanized infantry whichever suits the battlefield better.
>>96956685>AerospaceGets hard countered by anti-air battlemechs. Even regular mechs stand a good chance of shooting one down since all it takes is a scratch and they nosedive right into the ground.>ProtomechsAnything designed to handle lighter vehicles will take care of them quickly >Massed vehiclesTechnically yes but only because this breaks the initiative system, the game was never designed for that many units.
>>96956685>protomechsThats cute.
>>96956793>uhm.. actually, batman's utility belt has an answerYou dropped this. I'm not going to refute everything, but the first and dumbest take sets the tone.>AA mechs counter aerospacePatently false. Aeros can fly in, have insane TMM and exit attack range while depositing +1 elevation hit tables for double AC-20's(i think there's a triple, I forget and not bothering to look it up). If you're fielding air units in general, it's a common courtesy to let your opponent know so they can plan for it otherwise they're just fucked. Not to mention AA mechs range from general shitmech to bad against anything that isn't air. We've had consensus on battlemechs in their own setting for 30+ years. The reason you field battlemechs is because they're logistically easier to transport and field than anything else. Even in the fiction they're ROUTINELY bodied by not-mechs. I simply pointed out a couple non-mech options for destroying a lance. When in combined arms, the specialty stuff universally out performs mechs in their own backyards because mechs are swiss army machines. They have robust mobility for a weapons platform and that's about it.
>>96957011>have insane TMMDescribe it. Give an example of how hard you think it is to hit an incoming ASF. Give numbers.

>>96957011Battlemechs are more than just logically easier to field, they’re also qualitatively better. In fact, it’s the fact that mechs are so much better than other vehicles that makes them so much better logistically. Why is it that a tank of the same tonnage as a mech doesn’t stand a chance against that mech? Because the mechs are the far superior weapon. We don’t have to pretend otherwise, we have math backing it up.
>>96957128They get a +3 for being targeted but goes down to a +1 if your with 1 hex of its flight path. +1 for shooting the nose, +2 for shooting its side and nothing if your shooting as it flies away. But then you involve HAGs, Flak or LBXs and they just eat it. Its funny watching someone go what when there Aerospace Fighter eats a HAG/40.
What mechs field hag40's?
Hey /btg/ I messed up the paint job on some minis and I am trying to get them down to the resin again. How does /btg/ strip minis? I am using isopropyl alcohol but it doesn't seem to strip off the primer
>>96957422have you tried turpentine?
>>96957422Honestly, probably a better question for wip/3dpg. To strip 40k minis I use a ziplock baggy of purple power in a warm water bath in an ultrasonic cleaner then a soft bristle toothbrush to remove the stubborn crevices. I assume cgl mini's would fair the same. As for resin, I feel like your mileage may vary tremendously. Alcohol feels dangerous for resin. Also, depends a lot on what the primer is. Rattlecan primers are notoriously sturdy compounds.
>>96957391Or the anti-air targeting quirk. Everything's a pulse laser if you have that. The Rifleman is actually really good at plinking flyers out of the air. It's just stuck fighting mechs 99% of games and it's not good at that.
>>96957483people use quirks?
>>96957515If your playing historic or campaigns yeah. I wouldn't suggest pickup games as the rules kinda bog stuff down.
>>96957515Once in a while. Some designs only really shine when their quirks are in play. But since most games are just 4v4 deathmatch with no context, the quirks lack of balancing consideration means they're not used.

>>96956685>anything en masseThis is entirely because of activation rules. If you switch activations so that you don't get infinity turns for taking swarms then suddenly being a brick shithouse with guns for anything becomes much more manageable. Also the anti-infantry rule that quietly made everything except for a few weapons kill infantry.Per the current rules, a few battlemechs with lasers wouldn't even hold the line at waterloo because they just couldn't kill a reasonable amount of people.
>>96957894>>96957781>>96957804The forbidden fondue
>>96957515All the fucking time…but I mostly play via Megamek. And there is RARELY a player with P/G higher than 3/3; 4s, 5s and higher used by NPCs or the standard NMEs. The amount of combined arms shit my players face makes them have to think and use every advantage. Megamek makes so many things possible and easy to manage/track whether my pilot is in the mission with them or I play strictly OPFOR. The bot keeps getting better with each release too. >>96959821Did you melt?
>>96959821I have done it on stuff from the 1980s to today. It works fine. It just makes them a little soft until you clean them off. It's about the only way to clean old Battledroid polystyrene models. Get an ultrasonic cleaner bro!
Air assault mech battalions when? Surely an aspiring merc commander could get 36 Tonbo's.
Does BT have any catchphrase? (like, 40K's 'In the grim darkness... there is only war') Or, 'big stompy robots blowing shits up in spess Game of Throne' the closest to it?

>>96960229My love I give you the Capellan Confederation?
>>96960334Don't think it'd be crazy. A reactor is just 6 crits. If you handwave it needing to be in the CT, you could put one engine in both side torsos. It'd be functionally no different from just getting a larger engine though, I'd wager. An IS XL Engine is also 12 crit. And an IS XXL is 18. So for all intents and purposes, you're doubling and tripling engines for a moderate weight discount.I'd be interested in exploring an XL engine that is put in the side torsos only leaving the CT for a reinforced torso cockpit that pulls the life support to the CT.
>>96961222I think they wouldn't allow splitting them, there has to be some connection of some sort, so it would be minimizing the crits in the CT to open up more space in there. Still something Catalyst could do when they're out of ideas.
>>96961286>wouldn't allow splitting itNeed I link the picture of how ammo is routed through the machine? They'd just need a thematic name to rationalize it. Also, the Side Torsos generally connect like shoulder blades on many mechs so it could be a horseshoe configuration. There'd be some silly mental gymnastics to make it palatable.
Pirates!
>>96961326>Piratesshouldn't have mechs. They can't build or maintain them without an economic base, and no real state would let pirates operate mechs anyway. And none of this even touches the insanity of pirates owning a multibillion cbill jumpship to do pirate things. Pirates don't belong in Battletech. It's really that simple.
>>96961312The main bulk of engines is the shielding. XL and XXL engines are almost the same actual fusion core, but instead of super dense, heavy shielding they have lighter, bulkier stuff. When you take an engine hit, it's almost always just shielding getting stripped away, and when you take three hits, you've lost so much shielding that the automated safety functions shut down the engine before it slags your entire mech. The actual fusion bottle is usually still functional and secure. Engine explosions from taking three hits in the same turn are basically steam explosions around a radiation source rather than true nuclear detonation.

>>96961335Pirate is just a catchall for all manner of unaligned forces. Reactionaries, Privateers, Terrorists, etc. One system's pirate is another system's freedom fighter. Them owning mechs is also well explored as ramshackle frankenmechs they assemble from salvaged.
>>96961312I am specifically talking about a horseshoe config, what I was saying that is very unlikely for them to do is to have an engine that is completely two separate crtic blocks in the side torsos.
>>96961425so we agree then...?

so ive been playing with the zeus in MW5 and its pretty fun, whats it like in classic battletech?
>>96962739Depending on the variant It's a pretty decent heavy that mostly wants to hang back.
>>96962739Fat heavy, like an Albatross is a fat Orion.
Should heat efficiency factor into BV more? You can take a SHS design that overheats badly, turn it into a cool running DHS design with the same weapons and BV increases by like 50.
>>96962772>>96962764I'll have to give it a try next time I play. Probably use the 5S so I have another excuse to try our the playtest rules.
>>96962913It's hard to balance because some designs with super hot alpha strikes don't actually use them like LRM boats with medium lasers will fire one set of weapons or the other and only get a little hot, or the Nova that have nothing better to spend its weight on than more guns, so it can comfortably lose half of them to an arm blown off without impacting its turn to turn performance at all since it was never going to fire the extra ones more than once or twice per game anyway.
>>96961700I don't know. Solitaire mode is probably a good way to weather low engagement these days. That said, I think the whole card system is silly. I get Topps is a trading card company and wants to sell cards though.
>>96963237It's better than an app like some games do for solo mode. At least cards can be scanned and reprinted when the official product goes out of print.
>>96963250An app would step on the toes of that guy who has the perpetual and irrevocable rights to digital game aids. Maybe the fact that it's a new system attached to the game and not just an aid to make the existing system work better would let them slide, but I think we should all be thankful for that guy cockblocking them.
>>96963250>>96963298It's a rough network of legal battles. Probably best to consolidate control of the IP before putting anything out that would be actually good. So technically exist but don't help the brand anymore than you have to.Or do the right thing and put out a top tier tie-in media for the 21st century like Astartes/Edgerunners on one of the streaming platforms that wants to throw money at something. I'm honestly surprised they haven't since you can put black lesbians in mechs speaking chinese and hindi with varying degrees of burkha and it's not against the IP unlike literally everything else.
>>96962913Yes considering there are designs that upgrade to DHS that don't even increase BV at all.
Really happy with how this guy is turning out, should look nice when done
>>96949332hi hi see you are new BattleTech, what made you want to get into it?
I like mechs that have big secondary batteries, like tge warhammer and battlemaster, they feel like pre dreadnoughts. Any other mechs that stand out for having one or two big guns and then half a dozen smaller guns?

>>96958810>submarines>>96958953>torpedoesWhat the fuck is this game. How often does naval warfare come into play in the futuristic armor battle sim? I’ve only ever heard of land vehicles.
>>96964410Just a generic combine symbol, all i really have at this scale atm
>>96964417It's fun and quite old, some planets are all water. Also just adds some flavor. If a mech ends in a U variant its often for underwater fighting.
>>96964417>how often does naval warfare happen?Literally never. There's rules for all kinds of shit, but I've never heard of anyone actually playing more than deathmatch or really simple objectives outside of youtuber channels for the clicks.

where do I buy minis for this game? whats the recommendation for starting out? I want a mad dog cause that was my favorite mech on the original xbox game
>>96965942iron wind has metal minis of most mechsbuying packs direct from catalyst is standard, they made a "premium" plastic mad dog so you can get it without any other mechs but it's sold out on their site, ebay or third party stores have it without much markup it seems or you can wait for restock some day3d printer go brr
>>96965942There is also a Mad Dog in the BattleTech: Clan Heavy Striker Star box.
>>96965942I would probably avoid getting them directly from catalyst as their shipping is expensive and can take forever. Iron wind metals and ebay are pretty good for older stuff and even some of their newer mini's look good. For the boxes and starter sets have a look nearby, I was quite suprised that I could find stock in local game stores. although they dont always have what you want.
>>96965942I wouldn't suggest buying anything directly from Catalyst or Iron Wind Metals, they both have stupid shipping prices and rarely go on sale or discount. Catalyst makes plastic models that come in packs of 4-8 and have been redoing a lot of the art direction to match them, IWM makes metal models but only their most recent stuff is in the new art style. Find third party stores for either. The Catalyst stuff might be in local stores and some of it gets to Barnes and Noble or Target. IWM stuff is rarer to find in real life.
>>96965942>>96966017>>96966134>>96966209>>96966218Literally just go on ebay, You can usually save $5-10 per model/pack.

>>96966272can you read? ebay is one of the places I told them to look.
