/tg/ newfag here with a question.
Do you guys ever feel like you're getting too old for ttrpgs? I can't shake the feeling that it's gay and pointless, even if the stories are really interesting and it's fun to hang out with my bros.

Maybe it's just 5e. I'm gonna try out DMing for Pathfinder and Call of Cthulu, but if they don't work out then I'm gonna have to retire.

Dunno but I wanna have a Mario and Luigi thread just to piss off OP and his inane retard thread.
How would you run a Super Mario game? It's not like Sonic which has centuries worth of adventures and a lot of autistic lore behind. It's pretty self-contained, and rarely if ever moves from "funny bing bing wahoo man smashes shit". Hell, even Donkey Kong has more material to work with, whatnot with the different Kongs, species, etc, etc

I don't feel like I'm too old, I just feel like I don't have enough time for it.
I work two jobs, five days a week, and on my two days off, I just want to relax and get away from everyone.
>>
>>96970888
Why do you think "growing out" of having hobbies and enjoying yourself is remotely sane, never mind obligatory?
>>
>>96970942
I'd never run a wholesale Mario game, but one of my major TTRPG projects is based heavily on multiple early Mario games.
The project is not going well at all, because multiple sources of frustration and having no time aren't conducive to completing projects.

A fuckton of hobbies are
>even if the stories are really interesting and it's fun to hang out with my bros.
See, there's your reason to play tabletop games. Because they're fun. Frankly, if you're not having fun, then you should do something else. Unless you're getting outright paid to do this for a living, then it's first and foremost a hobby. And you don't let your hobbies consume your life.
>I'm gonna try out DMing for Pathfinder and Call of Cthulu, but if they don't work out then I'm gonna have to retire.
Legitimately the smartest thing you've said. If your hobby's growing stale and boring, then shake it up with something different that excites you.

Also, if you're a foreverDM, have you considered maybe you're primarily tired of the DMing half of ttrpgs? Cause it does take substantially more work to set up a proper game than to just roll a character sheet and participate with someone else at the helm. Maybe consider asking if someone else wants to take a shot at dming for a bit, or just play a board game with your bros instead. I know a fair few guys who expressed a lot of burn out on ttrpgs from always DMing and not getting to just be a regular player.

No. As I get older more and more responsibilities are put on me and therefore I find more enjoyment in acting silly with my friends. I also attain more skills and understanding that lets me run and play a better game. You're joyless, not old.

>>96970942
If you want to do a Mario game, you gotta learn from the best and simply Do the Mario. Much like the cartoons in the SMBSS, you just create dumb fucking cliche situations and apply cartoon logic using a Mario skin. District 9 but it's the toad people, problem is solved when you send King Koopa to space and all the toads live happily ever after. Spaghetti is a meta resource.
>>
>>96970972
I don't think you can run anything but a one shot. I can't imagine a group of grown ass men assembling every 15 days to go "bing bing wahoo" for 5 hours. Unless they are on the spectrum, but even those who are prefer something with a bit more class.
Anything, I'd take the plot of the first Ghostbusters movie and add the Mushroom Kingdom and all that non-sense to the mix. A group of blue collar workers get caught up in magical crap and gotta bing bing wahoo their way outta trouble.

Mario has a shittonne of lore, it's just that it's never carried over from one game to the other. You can literally pick and choose or just mash it all together.
The bigger question is what the gameplay would be like. Probably something like paper mario, as side scrollers are hard to do on tabletop and 3d platforming would be way too clunky.

heh

Shit I forgot completely about Paper Mario. I should finally play that game

>>96971008
I'm not a foreverDM, I just put way too much work into my campaigns. Whole worlds with lore and whatnot. I'm proud of it but can't shake the feeling I should have used the energy for something more important. Hopefully my disdain is somehow with 5e and not with rp'ing in general.

fuck anon... that hurt. Thanks for the advice though, I guess this is how people become grumpy old men.
>>96971070
what system would you recommend then? As much as people mock D&D and PF, the system works for playing with videogamer friends.

I feel like society expects you to outgrow "childish" hobbies, but never explains why. What makes a hobby acceptable for old people? Are we supposed to just sit around and wait to die?

Luckily, I feel that newer generations are realizing this bullshit and embracing things they like.

Although if you're not enjoying something, then you don't need to force yourself.

>>96971008 may be right that it may be worth trying to enjoy TTRPGs as a player to reduce the work needed. As an adult, you do have spare income, so paying a guy online to DM is an option.
>>
>>96971159
>I guess this is how people become grumpy old men.
Bingo, and being aware of it is the first step to counteracting it. Fun is fun.
>>
>>96971188
>what makes a hobby acceptable for old people
idk, woodworking and sports come to mind. Things that exercise a talent or ability. But I guess none of that matters in this world of leisure.
I do have friends that DM, they're just not too good at it. I should stick by them regardless though.
>>96970942
Fuck you nigger for derailing my thread but thanks for the interesting conversation that spawned.
>>
>>96970888
The ability to enjoy pointless things that have nothing to do with survival or reproduction is the entire point of being human.

We won. We defeated nature. We can do whatever the fuck we want.
>>
>>96971241
>woodworking and sports come to mind
Unless you're looking to sell or use your woodworks, it's worthless
Unless you're looking to get into sports, it's worthless
>Things that exercise a talent or ability.
Unless you're using it to directly benefit you monetarily or around the house, it's worthless
>But I guess none of that matters in this world of leisure.
Correct.

If all you do is measure your hobbies by what old people think is acceptable, then you'll find that all your hobbies just end up sounding like work instead of a way to mentally stimulate yourself out of the 9 to 5 and all your other chores. So relax and have fun. Have some enjoyment of using your mind to problem solve from a different perspective than your usual one, aka roleplaying. If nobody gets hurt by it, then you're all fine.

Just run something in the first two Paper Marios or Odyssey. Also

Life itself is gay and pointless. Might as well have fun while you can.

>Do you guys ever feel like you're getting too old for ttrpgs?
Yeah I'm 32 and I still really like them, but something is off. Like it just isn't as much fun or something. After 5 years of being a wagie I'm a NEET again and I feel totally dead inside. It's November which is usually when I liked to listen to ambient music and get feels for my post-apocalyptic campaign, but I haven't felt that sort of deep interior sadness since I was 22 or 23. I used to have such an imagination, now I struggle to come up with stuff. It feels like my brain was once a huge room full of random old junk and books, and now it's just a bunch of clean fluorescent light office corridors, like there's constant clean emptiness in my mind. Maybe I never really had any spark. Maybe my campaigns were always shit. I listened to some old recordings of me DMing, and I don't sound a whole lot different. I definitely lost some of my vocabulary from 5 years of sleeping 5 hours a night on weeknights because of wagecucking. I am not as eloquent as I once was. But other than that, I guess the end result is the same. My friends don't think my games have gone downhill. But I feel like they have. Maybe everything really was just shit all along. I don't know anymore.
>>
>>96970888
The game is supposed to take place in your imagination, with your story, your characters and your choices. If you think it's gay then maybe your imagination isn't straight enough.
In all seriousness though, just play them like you used to when you liked them. I felt burned out of wfrp and then reverted back to the shitty d6 system I first played, had fun again.
>>
>>96970899
It was a Mario-themed flash card quiz game, I actually had it when I was a kid it was the coolest fucking shit ever.
>>
>>96970888
>and it's fun to hang out with my bros.
Hey, dipshit, this is literally the point. TTRPGs are a social activity.
>>
>>96970888
I love reading TTRPG rulebooks, and am working on my own atm. But actually playing them has no real appeal anymore. Part of it, I think, is my limited local friend pool, but even then, I just dont feel any real urge to sit down and play the things. Might just be getting older, I dunno.
