My cult of the possessed for mordhiemSaturday morning they were not based nor primed, the magister wasnt assembled and I added some little kit bashes to the possessedHappy with the progress and colors so far
my shitty trees are now green shitty trees
>>97005579I think they're cute anon, don't beat yourself up
>>97005579airbrush white from the top so it looks like there is snow
Finished up my Eldar combat patrol today. Find the yellow and blue so satisfying, and relatively easy to paint using the wash technique.
>>97005543>>97005405>>97005398by 'too red', do you guys mean that too much of the midtone is showing?>>97005398If you're not buying the nmm, then yeah the values are probably off
>>97005579After your completely done with them I think they will look great.
>>97005607Also basecoated my (Eldritch Raider to go with the Iyanden boys) Corsairs. Bit of a rough basecoat as I was in a rush as the sun was setting. What light set ups to people use to paint in the evening?
>>97005623Forgot pic
>>97005588I think they are cracking and I am proud of my shitty trees, not embarrassed>>97005590lol I have tonnes left. Maybe in the new year I will do some snow terrain. The glitter on them gives them a kinda neat dewey effect>>97005618thanks anon, I am undecided on how to base them but for now they will do the business
>>97005460I wish I could paint skin like thatAny good tutorials on female skin?
>>97005697Same as any other skin, but avoid stark contrast.
Anon, if this is you I strongly suggest you do not wait until Christmas to open lest your gifts start to rot. Merry Christmas!
>still no email>spam is empty>no response It's over.Last time I trust a /tg/ user to get anything done right.
Still tryung to make effects look like they're supposed to look, I fucked up the green smoke. Any recommendations how to fix it?
GODanother year that I missed the ssDAMMIT
>>97005736Well, if you cant manage to send an email to Santa, maybe its better you do not participate?
painting up my first spearheads (Slaves to darkness chaos warriors + yndrasta stormcast) and looking for some advice on some 'inner glow' effects i want to attemptFor stormcast specifically, I was thinking of priming in a very bright red or ice blue and building up the actual armor colors with drybrushing to sell the effect that they were recently reforged and their insides are still molten, or lightning is bleeding through (idk their lore for reforging I just want cool glowy immortal soldiers). I've seen this effect executed quite well with red -> black -> grey -> light grey for a trench crusade hell knight in black armor, and this is probably what I'll do for the chaos warriors in their black armor, but I haven't been able to find any examples of this with stormcast gold. Is it possible to mostly drybrush a decent gold look? Like prime red/blue -> drybrush dark brown -> parasite brown -> yellow -> ice yellow , or should I just do TMM
Ork flesh tests - think im gonan use a mix of mini 1 and mini 3 - disappointed with orruk flesh by gw as it goes over poorly on black - is this user error?

>>97005736Last year when I e-mailed santa he replied in like a couple hours, I think you're either retarded or shitposting.
>>97005892I still do, but depending on the timezone you are writing from, it might take a bit longer. There are no unanswered emails as of now, so i'm pretty sure he is a shitposter, because he was told 2 threads ago to write me already. But he didn't. Besides, because mistakes could happen, and because its common sense: If you write an email for which you expect an answer, and get no reply for 1-2 days, just send a friendly reminder. Send 5 reminders if i should not answer.. no harm is done by that.
To my SS living in Arizona: I have 30% of your gift ready. I just need to get [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and a funny picture and I think it'll be just about ready.mmmm maybe some more fish though.
>>97006114Oh hey that's me, good to know I'm not being grinched
>>97005460I know that my plan was to rough in the shading and then worry about blends later, but man I hate looking at the zoomed in skin on this girl. Not to mention I don't actually know how to blend it better without ruining it.
I finished my entry for a tanksgiving event my local store is doing
>>97006204I'm in this picture and I'm okay with it.
Giving goblins hoodies so they fit in with my night goblins.
>>97005460Tips for a new painter? I realize now that I forgot to highlight his hands and went a little out of the lines in a few places.
Hey anons, I'm getting this weird separation on my oil wash, what's up with it? Too much spirits? It's already pretty thick for a wash. I can fix it just fine once it cures a bit and I go over with a cloth and cotton swab to remove the excess, but I'm wondering if I can't just have it smooth from the start.
>>97007015You definitely can (and should) have it smooth from the start. What solvent are you using?
>>97007015Paint underneath is too gloss for it to be able to stick to.
>>97007064This thing.>>97007076Would a thin coat of GW satin varnish before the wash prevent this?
>>97007148>Would a thin coat of GW satin varnish before the wash prevent this?It should, yes. It would also increase the staining capacity of the wash, though. Keep that in mind if you do decide to do that.
Not much time for painting but I did get a bit more of the riptide done. Might stop building it here for now and fill in some details
Added some kromlech fat orks to my collection, went absolutely full retard with the weapons. Will clean mold lines better before painting, don't worry>>97005861>>97005869How many coats of orruk flesh did you apply? It's a fairy pale color as far as I can tell from the website so you'll likely need two or three thinned coats for proper coverage over black
>>97005777it's okay, you don't have to stress over other people on your Birthday
>>97007263even more full retard
>>97007263>>97007277Very nice.Never really looked into Kromlech minis much. I just found pic related though and am impressed.
>>97007323Ty. Just gotta give you a heads up, their quality control leaves a lot to be desired. Certain bits are perfect, the heads in particular are really good. Others like the legs, torsos and running bodies in particular are more hit and miss. Lots of flash and nasty mold lines on some bits
Honest question - do I actually need to include some handmade stuff in my Secret Santa package? Sorry, it's my first time and I have no idea what could that be anyway. Would it be bad to just include stuff, sweets and some letter?
anyone know a good terracotta colour paint manufactuer?
>>97007409You dont need to but it's just custom here to do so.
I'm building a terracotta sentinel for a friend and I'm seriously considering throwing it against the wall at aprox. 80 mph. This shit is giving me a brain aneurysm
>>97006999Have fun looks great>>97007263>>97007277Great.
>>97007409>Would it be bad to just include stuff, sweets and some letter?Only if you don't intend to write the letter yourself, anon. A heartfelt letter from one anon to another should handily fulfill the "hand-made" requirement.
I call this Elven pair done. Quick since they were mainly golden so it went really quick. But I added some silver on left girl chest to break this mono-color a little. What's your opinion?
And their back.
Progress on my Deamonsmith. Might add some white to the base of the flames, not sure yet.
>>97007263at least 2 go overs :( - im happier with orks 1 and 3 i think anyway and using orruk as a layer/glaze type thing
>>97005579>>97005670>>97005186>Any ideas on getting these fellas green?I used a mix of white glue and paint to prime mine, then dipped them in mixed flocking to get a nice foliage effect, and finally drybrushed them successively with a little pale olive, yellow, and orange to look like dead needles. It's surprisingly effective on the bigger trees. The two on the left are the "before" ones.>basingI just drilled small holes in a chunk of MDF and sprinkled it with flocking and grass, all the areas where trees go are soaked in burnt umber with a little splash of orange to simulate that soaking-wet rotted needle pile you get under conifers. If I was feeling ambitious I'd put blackberries or other bracken on them but it's easier this way.
>>97007815Thanks anon, Got any pics of them in use?
Reposting my lotd captain.
>>97008000And a spinny.

i'm so backtoday's progressi hate this model so much is not even funny, never buy bones plastic guys
>>97008113Nice nails girl.
>>97007886Not really, I'm usually pretty stretched for time at the local and setting up for pics in a game takes up quite a lot of extra time>>97008113I'll take 'em over Corvus Belli or Monster Fight Club's versions of siocast any day of the week, as long as the model's made with the limitations in mid they're usually fine. Still replace the weapons on mine with plastic or metals, though. Contrary to what Reaper claims, priming them with a flat black or grey seems to be fine and it helps a lot with paint adhesion. They don't like airbrushed primers or whites, though
Now I feel guilty because I didn't write a letter for my SS, and I already sent the package. I felt too gay writing it this year.
>>97008481>gay enough to send a Christmas present full of sweets and toy soldiers to a stranger from the internet >but not gay enough to write that stranger a greeting card
>>97008305that was airbushed black actuallyi hate how bendy the thing is, and how many defects the cast has, seeing how metal versions online are near flawless, also how hard it is to file, sand, or remove moldlinesalso painted some spiders a while back and it was a pain with the legs bending like a wet needlenever again
>>97008481Well done actively contributing to the breakdown of society anon. Do better next year.
>>97008481What's the point of a Christmas gift if you're not encouraging some heathen to go to church in your handwritten card?
>>97008481Sounds like your homies are going to bed without a good night kiss. You are not a good friend.
Should l buy models just to practice on or just keep plugging away at my furst army? Also do you guys ever go back and try to touch up or fix models you already painted?
>>97009270Keep plugging. That being said it isn't wrong to have a palette cleanser if needed since you can easily burn out doing the same stuff over and over. If it isn't something you will actually use and want it for that purpose or to practice then look for 2nd hand models.
>>97008000Lovely skeletor, that yellow cape contrasts so nicely.>>97007721I like that mini a lot, I'm sure it will look great in your scheme.>>97007677>>97007683Simple, but pretty effective. I think adding some more definition to the recesses would make the gold pop a lot more>>97007545I like this weathered metal a lot>>97006999This looks pretty damn good for a new painter, anon. The colors are lovely and it's pretty clean. For now I'd recommend you keep practicing your brush control so that you can stay "in lines".>>97006602Looks nice, I like the chipping effect. Good luck in the event, anon!>>97005773I have trouble painting smoke myself to be honest with you but I wouldn't say you messed it up. Just add some more highlights on upwards facing surfaces and it should be fine.>>97005607Iyanden is an absolutely kino scheme, your elves look nice.>>97005574I like them so far, the skin and metals look good.
Lost a week of painting to house sitting. What does it mean when the paint splits and pools on the model? I have too much water?
How come I can't just paint skin 'skin color' and have it look good? I genuinely don't understand.
>>97005712That's me! I never have the willpower to wait for Secret Santa anyways lol. I've tried to post this seven times, please cooperate 4chanThank you SO much anon, this is such a crazy haul of Old/Midhammer! Partial 3e and 5e starter sets, including the original 3e plastic trees, a lot of old space marines, a huge handful of Chaos bits, and a box of Dungeonquest is seriously generous. Hell I just love having the boxes, feels like having a tiny piece of history. The box of fluorescents and the snacks are a very nice bonus as well.I'd never had a date and they looked kind of like raisins which I supremely hate, but man, you guys grow some great dates out there. The bag advertise shakes but I bet these would kill in a proper pie. Seriously man, thank you for the gifts. This is a great excuse to homebrew up a new army using only older models and pepper in these Chaos bits on my CSM
>>97009729Also sorry to hear you were attacked by the cartel when you were younger. I'll pray for that Mexican child's downfall every nightAG in Oklahoma, your package is going out tomorrow! It's been a hectic few weeks. Gotta watch that blood sugar so no snacks for you! You could eat what's in the box but I wouldn't suggest it
>>97009729You're welcome and Merry Christmas!Classic Date shake:3 scoops vanilla ice cream1/4 cup milk5 or 6 pitted dates, roughly choppedPut it in a blender and serve.
Added some further refinements to my Aluant field gun. The chained rail on the rear is the biggest addition though I also added some more to the chassis so it could fit onto the rail in a way that made sense and looked good. Basically the idea is the gun can be staked into the ground with its "tail" and then a crank is turned and it pulls the gun back into its exact position on the rail and chain for continuous accurate fire. This fits well as another reference to its nominative origins, and further outlining why it is called an Aluant, which was a type of hunting hound in medieval Europe. The artillery troops colloquially referring to the two modes of operation as leashed, or off-leash with reference to whether the gun is operating with the staked rail or not. When not staked, the gun "jumps" as a result of the sophisticated recoil absorption system, without which the gun would basically blow itself apart in a few salvoes.Got some pretty cool tools this past week I'm gonna share with you guys and show off a few of their useful functions. What's more is these are dirt cheap and of very high quality.Have a good one bros keep painting keep building keep creating cool stuff. It's good for the soul.
>>97009754I keep all of my SS cards so I'll write it down there!
>>97009729Holy shit, 3rd edition.your santa anon must have a legendary backlog if he still hadn't made his way through that one.
>>97009673Human skin is not one solid color all over and it's also the material people are most familiar with so on an instinctual level you know single color skin is wrong
>>97009270>Also do you guys ever go back and try to touch up or fix models you already painted?I did go back and add checks and pink lips to my old boyz to match my newer stuff. Pink lips on orks are lovely, makes them look more alive
>>97009673Because of layering and colour interaction and how your eyes interpret this for you. Not even memeing. The manner in which your eyes perceive and interpret colour and contrast and shape definition and what not is no where near as straight forward as one would think. It is why when painting small little models like this we have to utilise exaggeration to basically trick your eye into seeing what it would be like at a normal size. Because otherwise the tricks your eyes do normally would render a lot of detail or contrast out otherwise. Similarly this is also why photos of models tend to look worse than IRL because the camera picks up all this stuff differently to your eyes and renders it differently too (or more accurately I should say). There is a whole rabbit hole you will start down once you start to understand layer interaction and framing etc.
>>97005773You should try to make the recesses the brightest points, and then slowly fade darker as you travel back along the smoke. My example needs its extremes pushed more IMO, but it's got the basics of the effect right I think.
>>97009270Do what I do and learn an entirely different hobby to duplicate your minis so that you don't have to be anxious about ruining the real 'good' one.On that note, all 6 of the duplicates are finished. Some bubbles were caught in the elbows on a few even with vacuum and pressure, I think it's just because the inlet and vent weren't big enough, but that area is easy to fix so I'm fine with it.Also pictured is the model I actually wanted to do this with, since it's just a simple skin/face/hair/one-type-of-clothing. I'm happy to have the succubus copies, but they're a little complicated to do quick practice tests on.First order of business is all the shitty printing artifacts need to be cleaned up, then after duplicating her I want to paint a normal one, and then try and do the same idea but have it look like her skin and shirt are wet.
>>97005574What's your metallic recipe for bottom left?
I bought some replacements for my fancy brushes (just the same brushes, only new) because I was making an order anyway even though my current fancy brushes are still plenty sharp and fine. And holy shit my current 'sharp' brushes are not sharp anymore. Take care of your brushes friends. Don't let yourself slowly get used to less sharp brushes like a frog boiling in water.
Looking for some advice on this scheme. Specifically, which areas that are still white would you all color, and which colors would you use? I want the primary colors to be red, black, and white for sure, but he has some belts on his jacket and boots that could be leather, maybe. Also don't know what to do with the fur, but planning on leaving the legs, crotch, arms, and right jacket breast mostly white. The mask could either be white, or maybe half red half black, on opposite sides to the hat. Any thoughts?
>>97010265Having red as the only 'real' color is fine. If you do want to add more, you could probably get away with yellow or orange. Maybe blue but if you did that I'd probably replace the black you have with the blue. Take a look at the Vatican guard uniform.
>>97010265>>97010282Yellow/orange will be too visually similar to the gold. I'd go with either black/white or red/white diamonds on the white areas.
>>97010261You can reforge the tip on a brush via brush soap. However it is a battle against entropy for the most part as invariably it will fray over time. But then it just becomes a rough or stipple brush.
>>97010282Nah, I'd like to stick with white, black, red, and gold for the most part. Taking a lot of inspiration from playing cards. The only things I'm even really considering are maybe leather for the boots/jacket belts, and potentially a blue crystal in the middle of his waistbelt, but leaning towards no right now.But as far as the white parts that could have that red/black symmetry like his hat, I'm not sure. I think I will do the shoulder pads on each side opposite to the hat color, but leaning towards leaving the jacket and tassle cloth white. Not sure about the fur though. Maybe a grey shade paint would make it look like a white fur while still differentiating it from the primary jumpsuit white.Sorry for rambling I'm kinda working through it in my head by writing it out.
>>97010265I think you are better off making the currently white body cloth a grey instead, and then making the cloak and fur white (which is actually the grey layer and highlighted up to white). The boots should probably be a colour as well, either both red, both black, or one red one black. Maybe do the same for the cloth on the hands as well. You already have enough colour on the model that it isn't just accenting the overall white, so better to lean into a little less white overall so it isn't as overpowering and also for better visual definition.
>>97010353Yeah. I dont have much experience working with this much white, I've heard its better to do grey and highlight up, but I have tried that in the past and haven't gotten the best results. Working on the boots and gloves now. Will post an update shortly.
>>97010391White is tricky pretty much always due to the pigment size and how bright it is as a baseline. But it is something you will need to get used to. Find a light grey and mix in just a dab of white to that and use that as the base. Then layer up mixing in more white with each layer. If layers share any amount of colour they will naturally blend better at the edges. You can also go over the final layered up areas with a very thinned out glaze/wash to help unify it as well.
>>97010412Hmm. Alright I'll give it a shot. The shoulders, gloves, and boots help break it up a lot.
Did some work on my base coat next i'll do the reds.
>>97009787Nah I found that on Goodwill auction a few years back.>>97009740Bro this is a HIPAA violation
>>97010444Yeah that is significantly better balance overall. One thing I noticed though for in future, with any bright prime it is a good idea to black out any bits that will be metallic before putting the metal over that. As otherwise the metallic can end up brighter than you want as a base, and also shading the recesses around it can be a pain if there is just white there making the recesses brighter than they should be. It can still work the way you have done it but it might require extra work in the shading stage to clean up because of it.
So I've got these tokens from a starter box and I'll like to paint them, though they're all on a sprue. As they are all double-sided, would it just be easier to do priming and basecoating on the sprue first and worry about the gaps from cutting them off later?
>>97010484No. It would be easier to lay them down, spray them, and then wait a few minutes, flip them and spray the other side.
>>97010470Yeah. I might go over the metal in black and the gold again. Or maybe just use an extra layer of reikland flesh shade to darken it up a bit. I think it makes sense for these guys to have a flashy, bright gold as opposed to a dull gold, so maybe I'll just see how the shade looks first.
>>97010504I'll have to see if my airbrush won't knock them around. Guess I'll have to find some disposable background surface that could give them a bit more grip.
>>97010512A rattle can probably wouldn't, but yeah a rattle can might. If you can, raise them up off the flat surface. But in either case, you're going to have a better time if you remove them from the sprue and clean up the nub marks before priming rather than trying to do it after priming. Just stick them down with upside down tape as a last resort if you can't do something to raise them up a bit like sticky tack or whatever.
>>97010511You probably only really need to worry about the recesses where the metal meets a different colour. As that area can show brighter than it should due to any white lingering in there. So just keep that in mind that you might want/need to pin wash those areas to fix that up.
>>97006999this motherfucker is about to shoot a moomin in cold blood.
>>97010261I just went through all my brushes and realized how many of them are not sharp. 3/40+. Several more have useable tips, but not sharp to a good point, just to the concept of a point. I need to throw some away and refresh my collection, man...
>>97010685do you have brush soap anon? your brushes may yet be saved
>>97010265codpiece should be blackI'd make the other leg solid red, and the jacket black and red like how the shoulders are alternating.I'd say the mask should be a bit more wraithbone white, maybe just highlights to keeps the work down, there are a bunch of these guys after all.
>>97010710I do. They're just old and abused. Mostly synthetics. But even my sables have suffered and I cannot figure out why despite babying them with soap, no metals or wash paints, making sure paint doesn't get to the ferrule, etc. The sharp points always dull rapidly.
>>97005736Weaponized incompetence
>>97010584Just did a shade. I think it came out pretty good. Went over the white with corax white, then soul light grey, and then tried to hit the flats with white scar. Gotta head to bed for tonight but pretty happy with this so far.
Is it me or is giving people used stuff as a present improper?
>>97010867That is looking pretty good all things considered. Next steps should be fixing up the recesses and adjacent areas where white is spilling over where it shouldn't be (like the lips of the boots for example). And then probably a pin wash of the white recesses for good delineation. Overall you have the right idea, the rest is just practice.
>>97005613The midtones are just not the right hue, they look just straight up red while somewhat oxidised copper is somewhere around orange-brown, which should be what you go for if you want to add verdigris. (Really fresh copper isn't red either, but more of a pink.)
>>97010964One man's trash and all thatI got someone's unpainted (and improperly built) basilisk and I cherish it. I was planning on giving my SS my disgusting chud termie sorceror but I already have a theme going on

Looking for feedback on my first color scheme test figure. Gun and chest armour not painted yet. In all efforts to not paint another grey army, I couldn't find a scheme involving non-dirt and earth tones that I liked.I really want to paint my airships the su27 faded blue-green themed, and wanted to at least have the ground forces colors ti in somehow, but blue wasn't doing it for me so I went with this off grey with green peeking out in the highlights. Not sure how I feel about it, kinda feels like Im looking at mud, but I did not like the way more vibrant and punchy schemes (like those Id put on space marines) felt. I was trying to avoid taking the green too blue because my other army is Sons of Horus, and I at least want them to be a bit different.
>>97009942Good shit anon, I've been wanting to get a vacuum chamber to make try my hand at making GK and you've inspired me these past few threads to start it next year
>>97005460Unfortunately 4chan decided to ban by IP address in Italy for whatever reason so I couldn't post any more pictures from Monte San Savino. >>97012433I was using this thing before I got the Redgrass lamp and can confirm it's pretty good for its price.
>>97012177On the wet palette is fine, but this is happening on the mini. So does that mean I have too much water in the brush?
>>97010444Looking good! Re. the leather, brown could work on this model to ground its otherwise otherwordly look, but I tend to avoid brown - it's such a boring color. Up to you.
>>97012536I'd say so. Unless the surface is greasy or something.
>>97012536Try wicking away some of the humidity in your brush on a paper towel or the back of your hand before applying the paint to the mini, see if that helps.
>>97012553I would hope not, they got a quick rinse and were placed under a cover a few days ago so they wouldn’t get dusty.>>97012575I’ll try that tonight
>>97012165I've stopped using a wet palette for otherwise thin paints (eg contrast paints) - the palette can add more water and I find it difficult to get consistency (pun intended). Maybe it's just me.
>>97012505I have the same one, and it's good value - I like it. For details (especially eyes) I use an affordable set of magnifier glasses with a built-in lamp. Gonna check out the Redgrass lamp - thanks for the tip.
>>97010867I like the way this is heading.
>>97012618The Redgrass lamp is pretty fucking expensive but it's really good. The build is solid and the leds have a very high CRI rating so the colors look very natural and vibrant, it's good for photography too. Only real downside is the retarded dimming mechanism - you have to hold the power button for a moment. Other than that I can easily recommend it if you can spare the money.
>>97005623I hang a battery powered light from a string I nailed into the ceiling.
>>97005623>What light set ups to people use to paint in the evening?I have these two swingarm lamps on my desk - one of which includes a magnifier - plus there's a ceiling fan with a light for the entire room that is behind me. At least that one helps with ambient light. If I'm painting during the day, I will also usually open the blinds behind my paint racks, but the glare from the sun outside shines directly on my computer monitors on the opposite side of the room. I have to close them again if I'm mixing painting with online tutorials or recipe research.
>>97007245Your color scheme is making me crave donuts and coffee with a lingering cigarette smell for some reason.I just started working on this fella. I found him in a yellowed old blister pack near a smoke pit behind a barracks. Perfectly preserved but the cardboard was sun bleached, and I have no idea who he is supposed to be, but he seems to be wielding THE Warhammer. So that's pretty neat. Not sure how I'm going to color the rest of him yet.
>>97007245please, after applying any decals or any further panel lining, apply some matte varnish.
>>97009578That and/or you had too much paint on your brush.

>>97005623Red grass games lamp for direct light. And then two little side lamps for ambiance and color balance. I really recommend a 2 arm-segment lamp like it, it’s a game changer for posture, being able to position the light right above my eyes while sitting up straight.

There are 4 interesting categories for us - Fantasy Painting (where the paint job quality is the most important aspect), Storytelling (where the most important aspect is the overall story, so this is basically dioramas and more experimental pieces) and Open (where mostly two people enter one piece, with a sculptor and a painter) and Historical, where realism and history go. You also have sculpting, military modelling and a few categories which are incredibly vague to the point no one knows what they actually are (out of the box and scifi).
>>97010524Museum Putty is excellent for this kind of thing, and it doesn't quit. I've been using the same blob to hold minis for painting on a small wood offcut for 6 months, and it's still fine even after paint exposure. $6.00 from Amazon.

Perhaps an unusual question, but how would you feel if you got some LEGO with your Secret Santa gift?
>>97014585Omg, you got somebody the Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000?!?
>>97014585Huh... interesting question. LEGO will always have a special place in my heart, but my kids are too old to care any more. I guess it would depend on which kit it was and whether my wife and I could build it as a special fun project, or maybe it'd end up over here on my desk.

Why are all the things I ordered for my SS taking so long to get here. aaaaaaaa. The one thing that arrived early was a 3d print from halfway across the world ffs.
Anyone having issues with lighting get one of these tradie cap/head lamps. They are cheap and usually easy to find. Most have multiple light modes. They will always be pointing where you head is, and they are adjustable angle so you don't have to crane your neck weird. Only issue is batteries but I am sure you can figure out something based on your own usage patterns. Also just worth having in the home for power outage or work anywhere that a light source doesn't reach easily.

Do all the components of instaset become vapor or anything after some time, or does it leave a residue? According to the safety data sheet, the two ingredients are:99-97-8 N,N-Dimethyl-p-toluidine 2.000-3.000%67-64-1 Acetone 97.00-98.00%Obviously acetone evaporates quickly; but what in the everliving fuck is N,N-Dimethyl-p-toluidine? Google says it evaporates (not quickly but it does evaporate) at 20 C and above, so I guess it's fine. But I'm a bit paranoid about toxic chemicals, and dont want to be getting organ damage just by painting and playing with my minis. Can anyone check my work above to help me feel secure that just leaving my minis in a well-ventilated area for a couple hours will be enough to not fuck myself?
Finished touching up everything, realised I forgot to do the leather straps on the backpacks, and called it for the night. Maybe tomorrow I'll put the oil wash on, who knows.
>>97018302That first one is used in preparation of dental equipment. And Acetone is made in your body already. Unless you are straight drinking the stuff for some reason you will be fine. >>97018302Anon, stop drinking neurotic zoomer reddit koolaid. Yes, the chemicals used in scale model supplies are often harmful. No, they are nowhere near harmful in amounts we work with. It's the dosage and exposure that counts. People who are working with industrial amounts of these chemicals (think factory workers, automotive, or chemical plant employees) who could literally bathe in them, those are at a risk of bad shit happening to them if they fuck up. People who work in print sometimes deal with solvents so concentrated that breathing them causes direct bleeding of your lungs. These people are at risk. You, whose only exposure to these is a whiff or two (in a well ventilated room, if you want to play it safe), don't need to worry. It ain't a nerve agent. Open your window for the duration, buy a respirator (you should have one anyway for airbrushing, with OV filters if it is enamels) and you are well beyond set for everything scale modelling will ever throw at you.

>>97020549>is it a case of just cutting back in with the base colour?Yup. Same with most freehanding.
Paint scheme experiments (so at times even sloppier work than my usual). Some merit to the lot I think, but red won't be "mine" and black&white's too much of a pain to paint, so I'll probably end up with something mostly based on the metal one, though going for a darker steel colour and then probably jumping around between this colour as well as light grey and deep crimson for the cloaks and the like. Also, one day I'll accept that rhinox hide ain't quite scorched brown, but I'm not there yet.

>>97006204MINOR UPDATE: I have decided to add a scented candle.
I'm looking to get into painting resin kits and own 3D prints, and reading this thread it seems bunch of you use airbrushes to paint your stuff. I'm assembling tools for the job and airbrush is one of things I want to buy now so I have couple questions to people who already used them.Considering size of kits (15-30cm) and planned prints (10-20cm), would 0,3 nozzle be enough or ideally I'd want something like 0,4-0,5 for painting such big parts not take ages? I've read your minis are usually 3-5cm tall. Thigh or arm alone in those kits might be size of your whole mini. Also does separate pressure regulator on airbrush come in useful at all when you can adjust pressure on compressor? I've been looking at some airbrush models, narrowed it down to few pics and it's one of the difference between them.>>97009942Do you scan them or something? I've bought couple kits of characters I like to make sure they wouldn't go out of stock in the meantime. Now I want to learn to paint, but because I didn't want to ruin kits, I decided to try on own 3D prints first. So yeah, I'm interested in copyign them for trial and error purpose.
>>970225750.3 or 0.4 are considered universal sizes, 0.5 is usually a little too big and used mostly for priming and varnishing, meanwhile 0.2 is often getting stuck too often. Despite sizes, you still would need some precision. Many people install 0.3mm nozzle and use it for everything. Airbrush pressure regulator is rarely used from what I noticed and many models intentionally skip it. At the other hand, trigger limiter (that screw part on the back that prevents trigger from being pulled too far) is pretty useful so it's good idea to pick model that have it.
>>97022575I made a rubber mold of her and recast her in 2 part resin. The other girl is just a 3d print I ordered, I'm going to spend a lot of time cleaning up print artifacts and stuff before molding her since the mold would pick up all the details and then I'll hopefully have minimal cleanup.
>>97022514That's not nearly enough time NEAAAAAAARRRGHG!
>>97022684don't fuss. Get the paint on the model and finish it
>>97022626it's a matter of scale. .5 might be considered "too big" for painting 32mm scale models, but it could be appropriate for larger models. when painting larger objects like say a tool box you might even use a .8, and spray guns for painting cars can use needles over 1.2.>>97022575you can adjust the pressure at the compressor but it might be less convenient if you have it in a closet or another room. you can always put another regulator at your work area though so having one on the airbrush itself isn't mandatory.
>>97022626Thanks. I was considering cheap chinese airbrushes because it's just start, Gaahleri airbrushes and S&H Evo.Cheap no-name chinese airbrushes apparently have trouble with consistency and bunch of models lack easily available spare parts so I have given up on them, even though cheapest ones are like 17€.S&H seems to be great, but I don't think getting something this expensive at the very start when I'm not even sure how much I'll get into it, how often I'll paint, and whether I won't break something as clueless shitter, is a good choice. But it seems like good pick for second airbrush in the future if I get into it.Gaahleri are also chinese but apparently they have actual quality control, maybe not as good as german/japanese but still, and they have replaceable parts in offer, while not being as expensive. From what I've seen only their 0,2 one has pressure regulator, but since they have similar "logistics" system as S&H, you could turn it into 0,3 or 0,5 by just buying alternative needle/nozzle/cap. But if pressure regulator isn't really useful then it's choice between cheaper one that comes with 0,35 and 0,5, and more expensive one that comes with only 0,35 that can be replaced with 0,2 or 0,5, but is also better finished meaning paint shouldn't stick to it and clog as much. Cheaper is like 1/3 price of Ultra, while better finished is still like half of what Ultra costs.>>97022756>you can always put another regulatorActually, I didn't think of that. Probably some valve inbetween hose and airbrush? As for scale of things, I mean stuff like picrel. This one is ~20cm tall and comes in parts that are mostly in uniform color with minimal shading and some details. They vary in size and detail.>>97022656Did you post whole process here? If so, I might go through archives to look it up because I'm interested in the process. Probably won't do it for couple reasons, but maybe in the future. For now practice on prints seems enough.
>>97022820>Rio garage kitI'm kinda jelly ngl
>>97022656It would be cheaper to get your own printer, lmfao.
>>97022820a fancy setup would be like this. you would mount the second regulator to your work bench or to the wall near it.
>>97022626>0.3 or 0.4 are considered universal sizesFor what? Priming? Anything more detailed, it's too big. Even 1:35 scale model tanks are usually primed/basecoated with ~0.3, but everything else is done with smaller nozzles.Something like 0.25 and 0.4 (i.e.: nozzles you get with Infinity and other sensible airbrushes) are I think what one needs for airbrushing scale models or prints in similar scale. >>97022820Fengda BD 180 is generally considered to be a really good airbrush for a really good price. That said, don't be afraid to splurge for your first airbrush; the learning curve might be a bit steeper, but it is ultimately better to buy a good tool that will last you and won't limit your work. I would even argue that getting something nice from H&S is better even for a beginner, because most of the chores tied to painting with airbrush is very streamlined and fast, compared to your usualy chinesium.
>>97022838Not my fault Nexon hates money so they haven't released any Rio figs. Garage kits and unlicensed coomer or OoC figs are only things I found. While I like some coom and ordered one, I still would prefer fig to be in character, and the only normal looking Rio figs where she isn't exposing ass with ripped pantyhose or lays on table like a slut were two GKs on aliexpress.Another reason I want to try is that kits are cheaper. For fav characters and media I'd still buy licensed because quality is great and it'll take me some time to get good, if I'll ever get this good + I like to show token of appreciation by actually paying for something I think deserves it, but this hobby as a whole is kind of expensive. Then there is issue of some things not having fig at all. Like SPAS from GFL has only 1 fig in her default costume, while her best designs are her MODIII and Darkest Dungeon/Goblin Slayer skin, picrel. That's why I also want to try to get better at modeling to print and paint one myself.Giving Rio proper paintjob and making best SPAS are my main goals in this. That's why I'm leaving Rio for last to make sure I won't fuck it up.>>97022911Anon, I think the mold was printed. At least base looks printed for sure. And printer needs model. He would either have to sculpt it himself in Blender or something, or use some 3D scanner to scan parts and throw them into slicer to print. Mold isn't bad idea and on industrial scale is more efficient than printing. Probably has less errors as well as long as you don't leave any bubbles inside.>>97022934eh, compressor will likely be right next to desk so I guess I'll be just leaning and adjusting it myself. I don't even know how often do you even adjust it. Might turn out you set it like once a month or so.>>97022955180 has screwed nozzle which apparently is easy to break while screwing it after cleaning. Cheapest Gaahleri is only bit more expensive and has floating nozzle.
>>97022955>Even 1:35 scale model tanks are usually primed/basecoated with ~0.3where did you hear that? people definitely paint model cars with .5s and I've seen fairly small parts painted with a .8 without trouble.
>>97023115>where did you hear that?Have you tried it yourself? Just yesterday I was airbrushing a Dreadnought - primed with 0.4, but everything else is done with 0.25. Otherwise I sincerely can't remember when I saw someone painting ~1:35-48 scale with 0.3. Priming yes, but not painting. Funnily enough, I'm right now watching Nightshift painting a 1:35 Puma; he primes it with 0.3 and then does all the rest with 0.2. He literally says that 0.2 is very much needed for delicate work like that. >>97023009I have no experience with Gaahleri, so I can't really advise on that. But BD 180 is well-tested and popular. I've used it quite a bit before I upgraded to HS. But again, it will always be a compromise with cheaper airbrushes, if not with cleaning, then with parts being fragile.
>>97023188Well, apparently they popped on the market not too long ago, so it's to be expected there are fewer experiences with them. In any case with this much price difference I'm willing to try, even if it'd be only for good replacement parts availability.
Probably last update on this guy since he's fairly close to being done. What do you guys think would be a good color for this smoke thing coming out of his hand?
>>97022450I am similar anon. Haven't been touching hobby stuff for a long while. Partially lack of motivation and partially due to shitty scheduling on my part. The key is to set aside an amount of time every day or every other day to do hobby stuff. Painting is preferable of course, but if burnt out on that then do assembling backlog etc. You just need to build up a rhythm and momentum.
>>97023292Same green as the flame on the base would be a safe choice.
>>97022450/40kg/ collages got me back into painting regularly after a long hiatus. Low stakes/low model count projects like that may help you as well.
>>97023312Yeah this is what I'm thinking right now. A bit boring btu there's already more than enough colors on the mini
>>97023292That cloth is excellent.
>>97023188well I have a belt buckle that was painted with a .8 hvlp and it looks fine. I would only be concerned about wasting a ton of paint on overspray if you are only painting tiny shit.
>>97023409NTA, but do you even own an airbrush?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnnB1a1C2OEI found this garage kit painting video I saw a while ago. I wish I could tell what he was doing. what is the stuff he used to fix the hair band at the start? wtf was he doing with the plastic bag for 10 minutes? what is that noodle looking tool he was using as an eraser? this seems like a completely different set of skills compared to miniature painting.
>>97023487>that masking aloneNipponese coomer-sama, I kneel.
>>97023503I was about to post the same thing. I'd rather fucking shoot myself than go through that.
>>97023503>it's Sukima againThat guy is driving nails with a microscope with his masking+airbrushing of literally every fucking single thing. He freehands the eyes anyway, so it's obvious he can do small details with a normal brush, why the fuck is he wasting so much time doing masking on literal 1 square millimeter surfaces.
>>97023524I think I remember someone here saying nips are super autistic about paints they use and finishes they want to get.
Finished the last Ghoul, pic including yesterday’s jobs too.Now the team just needs their heavily diluted wash, a matte varnish, and to finish their bases. All of which can be done tomorrow well before game day Saturday.
>>97023487>what is the stuff he used to fix the hair band at the start?White ground or something similar.>wtf was he doing with the plastic bag for 10 minutes? After grinding artifacts down you want to remove dust because paint will fall off with it. It can be done via various ways. You can try to blow it away pressured air, you can throw kit parts into sonic cleaner. Not sure what was method here, but he might have filled bag with some liquid to which dust sticks to or something.>what is that noodle looking tool he was using as an eraser?Sponge. Very fine details like eyes are extremely hard to paint well from the start. It's easier to apply more paint then needed and make rough shape and remove excess with sponge, creating desired shape. You basically cover face with lacquer because it's easy to wipe enamel painf off from and paint/wipe/paint/wipe until you get desired effect. Then you spray it with something to preserve it and repeat process with next detail on eyes.
>>97023524>why the fuck is he wasting so much time doing masking on literal 1 square millimeterBecause it looks great. I have bunch of figs from various price ranges, both japanese and chinese, of few types like regular static figs, figmas with moving parts and assembly kit figs, and you can really see difference in qualities. Expensive japanese figs are usually flawless. I couldn't find single scratch, paint overflow or leftovers from mold seam/supports. Cheap, mass produced japanese figs often have like 0-4 small painting or structural artifacts. Cheap figs made in China can have much more artifacts, like dozen or so, often lack raw material finish so you can see seams, and paint finish so color can be bland with no shading. Expensive figs from chinese studios can be on japanese studios level, but there is some variance.Flawless figs are like real work of art.>>97023487If you search for resin/garage kit painting, you'll see bunch of vids like that. Some even in english where you can learn what they are doing.
>>97023487https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGwnjTzUw4oa tool video
>>97023487Let's see.>typical moldline cleanup, and sandingNothing special, just that miniature painters barely do it because we're lazy.>rescribing lines where necessarythis is useful on mini painting, especially ridges or panel lines where a mold line runs through. You'll never be able to sand them but you can clean the line up by scribing over it again>fixing the headband earsIt's just ca glue as a filler and sprayed with an accelerator. Or something very similar like starbond gap filler probably a slipped moldline or something where a little more than just scraping/sanding was necessary.>sprays alcohol into bang and lets it soak. Collects runoff. airbrush to help speed up drying.I can't imagine it's actually the mr.tool cleaner, that would fuck up the model.I assume this is after already washing with soap, and maybe even alcohol if there was any resin residue, and this was the final alcohol rinse>white primer>gloss varnish>painting/maskingI would say, he might be able to get a better masking result if he either gloss varnished over the masking and then did the new paint. it would have fixed at least most of the cleanup he had to do>enamel panel lining. Using the rubber tool and lighter fluid to rub off the liner that didn't get into the grooves.>varnish>eye painting.Interesting I don't think it's a rubber tube thing, I think it's something like dense felt, like a marker core cut an an angle maybe. Haven't seen cleaning up the paint lines on the face using something like that. But it's definitely something + lighter fluid to clean up enamel paint.>mask eyes, paint faceIt's similar to high end gunpla workflow, so yeah, it differs to mini painting. I think it's useful to pick and choose from all the different modelling/figure-painting hobbies, but a lot of this kind of stuff isn't directly applicable to making good looking 32mm scale minis.
>>97023592>White groundwhat is this? was the shit he sprayed on it some kind of activator?
>>97023863It's just any CA glue or filler. His just happens to be white. I'm not even sure if it's white or if it just looks like that because it's on white plastic.
This is an odd question, but how do you guys paint recessed areas? Normally I'd just do a figure in assembly to avoid creating any weird niches, but I'm taking a break from my normal human historicals where I can just leave the arms off to paint some of those new Skaven and they're absolutely full of weird crevices I can't reliably get a brush into.
>>97023991for tabletop, I prime everything black, if I couldn't reach it with an airbrush I do a quick touchup with a shitty brush by just jamming it in there. After that, if I can't reach it, it was probably too dark to see.
>>97023991depends on the unit. battle line units with dozens of models? if the brush can't easily reach it, you probably can't easily see it. elite/center pieces? might as well do it in sub-assemblies.
My minis are so cute. I love them.
>>97021077the XenoBolsheviks can be whatever fucking color I want.
The oils went on, so tomorrow is when we start weathering
>>97024553Excellent work so far. Keep those boys lubricated.I've been repainting these to better match my Ryza army.
>>97024689Nice cog patterns. I'm too scared to do it.
>>97024776You won't get better without trying anon. It isn't as hard as you think. Take it slow and build up basic shapes rather than trying to do a whole outline to begin with. Any mistakes can be touched up as many times as necessary. All that anon has done there is make some squares or rectangles, then connected them with lines. And then once he had the basic pattern down he filled in the areas with a highlight colour. You can do that too if you try.
Going to use grey lichens to my Ossiarch Bonereapers bases because I think it fits their aesthetics.Never used lichen before and I want to ask if there's anything in particular they require or can be improved in some way? Like how you can make a rock look better by shading it darker and dry brushing it with a light color?
30 khornetards base colors down, trying to finish before Thanksgiving. I can almost see the light, blood god give me strength
Does Green Stuff World have anything similar to AK Streaking Grime? Making an order from them and I figure I'd throw that in as well but I'm not seeing a similar alternative.
>>97025098spraying it lightly from underneath with a darker color helps, so does hitting it with some PVA to protect and stiffen it. I usually dip it in diluted PVA rather than trying to paint it on, then hang it with paper clips or string from a wire rack over a pan.
>>97025151Will do, thanks! Also will assume you put it on after you've primed the base and model since it's kind of flimsy and hard to paint on.
>>97019315>>97021062It's not bad lore... I mean, it's old lore - something similar was in the 4th ed WFB Undead book. It's just dumb that they have gravestones and fences strapped to their backs. They'd look better with chains, weights and, yes, the occasional coffin lid... everything else is just excssive. It's also a great way to stop people from using non-brand or pre-schism Zombies in (post AoS) GW games, because no other company makes Zombies that look so... junk shop hoarder!
Polish Anon, your gift arrived in Hatten, DE.Normally I will only open it upon Christmas Eve, so please tell me, if it contains anything perishable.
Fully assembled and varnished the big cheese. Just a lot of small things left now.I'm beginning to understand the appeal of gunpla now there's something really satisfying about panel lining
>>97025559I like it, it has that clean 3D render properties. Planning on some weathering?
>>97025583Eventually. I want to finish the army and get some practice in before I try out weathering larger models
Should I really wear a mask when sanding resin or is this more reddit fearmongering
>>97025838Depends on the resin so you probably should just to be safe
>>97025838>Should I try to avoid inhaling particulates that my body can't get rid offNah, they're just being pussies, you should snort lines of that stuff to show them what little bitches they are
>>97025838i don't know how dangerous it is, but wearing a mask for a few minutes costs nothing, so imo it's worth in case any risk existsor just wetsand
>>97025838>>97025853>Should I try to avoid inhaling particulates that my body can't get rid offYour body can get rid of them. Your lungs are self cleaning. The problem is that the process takes time, and most resins are toxic, meaning you're getting poisoned while your lungs are busy getting the particles out.So yes, wear a mask when working with resin.
>>97025865Your body can get rid of large particles by capturing them in the upper airway and your nose, but if you're breathing in tiny inorganic particles they'll get trapped in your lower airway>Just cough them up broDoesn't work once they're in the lower airway>It will get captured by cilia/mucus/nosehairDoesn't work with microparticles>You're immune system will get rid off itYour cells have no way of degrading plastics and silica, best case is that your macrophages will pick it up and it accumulates in your lymph nodes, same as tattoo ink>I never wear a mask and I'm fineSilicosis killed over 13k people in 2019>I'm built different and you're gay/a redditor/nerdok
>>97025838Working with resin is one of the very few things redditors are not being neurotic faggots about. Resin is toxic, and we don't really know what it can do to a human body long-term. Wear a mask and use proper filters, especially if you are going to be sanding shit with dremel or something. t. 3dprintfag
>>97025865pretty sure cured resin isn't toxic, the actual problem is that is small and sharp, so it leaves wounds in your tissues even if its later expelled
>>97025894>Your cells have no way of degrading plastics and silica, best case is that your macrophages will pick it up and it accumulates in your lymph nodes, same as tattoo inkThere are no known ill effects to having (good quality) tattoo ink there (apart from scans potentially mistaking it for some kind of illness). Resin, which is toxic, is a different topic. >>97025903You generally don't wanna breathe in resin dust, anon.
>>97025894>It will get captured by cilia/mucus/nosehairThis but unironically. The mucociliary escalator will get rid of most particles. We're sanding resin, what microparticles?>>97025903Doubt it. The particles won't reach your actual tissue in most cases, as the whole thing is covered in mucus.
>>97025894>I never wear a mask and I'm fine>So yes, wear a mask when working with resin.Who are you talking to?
>>97025914>You generally don't wanna breathe in resin dust, anon.yeah it was my point, but afaik cured resin is chemically inert, the harm comes not from chemical reactivicty but from mechanical interaction
>>97025919The mucociliary tract only works up to a specific particle size. Why do you think asbestos is a problem?>What microparticlesSanding and cutting generates particulate of all sizes, including microparticles, that's also why stonecutters wear respirators even if they're working with giant electrical saws
>>97025894I'm built different: worse. I'm built worse.
>>97025955Sure anon, but volume matters. Those people work with much larger quantities of material for hours at a time, and electrical tools leave finer particles than hand sanding. There's microparticles in the air outside, but you don't walk around with a mask. Either way, everyone here agrees that you should wear a mask when sanding resin, no need to get pissy about it.
>>97020796masterclass
>>97025838a lot of resin contains bpa (the stuff that makes frogs gay) so you should avoid inhaling it. a simple dust mask should enough for sanding though since the particles are large.
>>97025895>Resin is toxic, and we don't really know what it can do to a human body long-termI'll take one for the team guys, feeling a bit thirsty and I got an unopened bottle of resin that's currently closer to me than my sink, wish me luck.
>>97025838Senior fufu. You should wear a mask. You might get away with some wet sanding, but really you don't want to inhale anything even if it's not technically toxic.
>>97025894>same as tattoo inkOH! You're a nutjob, makes sense
>>97025544No perishable goods inside brother.
>>97026331Nta, but some of the tattoo ink get washed down to your lymph nodes, nothing schizo about that. Schizos usually see it as a sign of something bad happening to your body, which is not true - it's just particles of paint being there, there's currently no proof that these could be detrimental to you in any way. It can become issue if you had your ink done like in prison or somewhere similar, where there were impurities or heavy metals in the paint (or whatever the fuck was used as a paint).
