>"Many people think that a game is finished when there is nothing more to be added. I believe a game is finished when there is nothing more that can be taken away and still leave a good game"You know it's funny bc I was reading a design blog by Phil Walker-Harding and he was expressing the same sentiment, going so far as to thinking having two two distinct systems in his design as an initial failure, and yet his games end up exactly the sort of way I'd expect any person's attempt at a hyper-reductionist-mindset would end up: light, simple enough, fun while playing but nothing to really write home about. And yet all of the doc's games appear that way on the service but somehow manage to manipulate basic game theory ideas and player psychology just really takes it a step above and I don't get how he does it so easily in a way that doesn't devolve into basic 'tasks' more than actual games
>>97009743I would hazard a guess it is a) The German cultural mindset of games being a family activity promoting bonding and interaction that is heavily infused into the doctors philosophy of what games should be doing at the table and b) is focus on playing to win and not winning on its own as being the motivating factor in how he guides players. That psychological emphasis is so baked it and yet somehow is at odds with what most other designers do: create a system of rules you are meant to explore, twist, and exploit, often regardless of the other humans at the table. Complete other end of the spectrum, but I find Cole Wehrle also gets this right, the focus is always on each other with the rules a means to an end. Whatever it is, it is magical and it will be a sad day when he departs the hobby.I love board games so much bros.

>>97009743knizia is incomprehensible. part of it is that he was designing in a near-vacuum, part of it is that he published something like SEVEN HUNDRED GAMES and we only talk about a handful of them.
Modern art is not good.
>>97010240Of course it isn't.It is fantastic.
>>97009743There are lots of Knizia games thoeverI think the main thing is that his designs encompass having a strong central "theme"/idea to them that is carried through to the end product. He's also not afraid to rehash on and iterate already strong design's he's worked on previously to make something completely new.Phil on the otherhand just seems to make literal random dogshit, the last two games of his I even remember coming out were Fire Mountain (Co design) and Spellbook. Both of which start at basically just trying to literally be mid versions of other games kek. He seems to encompass the "throw darts blindfolded" ethos of design many modern designers seem to follow for some reason.

what's your opinion about this game? i remember Jack Rida and GF9 shilled it to no end as best Conan game to be, but IMO, it feels that theme was slapped on as afterthought, similar to how they did that Firefly Misbehaving game. While Conan the Barbarian is cool theme, i feel game could work with any other setting, compared to say, Dune, where rules were baked with theme in mind (IIRC i read somewhere that initial prototype game was based on roman politics or something and avalon hill insisted they do Dune as they had access to IP or something)

I have played it. I like the energy system and its push your luck style. But a bunch of the scenarios are screaming out for balance or an actual campaign. And Monolirh has always been a bit eh doing this, just moving on to their next miniature pusher. That GF9 looks more like the former than the latter.
>>97015017Only played Genesis and mesofaunaWould love to experience mega and origins. I have a soft spot for Genesis. It's very random at first glance, and you are always a bad roll away from extinction even if you have specced into a strong micro organism with plenty of protection. The interaction between players seems minimal at first, but learning how to nab points through parasites and getting your domes onto other people lifeforms opens up a lot of sniping and interest in the more esoteric abilities. Meso felt a lot tighter. The world gets crowded fast, and branching off into sub species is a must, with the parasite subspecies being hilariously dangerous if able to flourish.

>>97018883NTA but the other anon who shilled it recently >>96984271. I've completed my first campaign now so I can write a few more words on it.First off, this is an exploration game that is a race against time. It's an open world with locations to explore, NPCs to talk to, quests to do, and items to find. The main quest itself is fairly open, without spoiling anything. However, once you look at it from the perspective of not a single campaign (which would cover roughly 1/3rd of the world map), but from the perspective of a series of campaigns, it becomes a game of creating a Groundhog Day-style perfect run by logging which location has what rewards, which items are found where, etc. If the first description sounds good to you, it's worth playing it once using someone else's copy or pirating it on TTS. If the second description sounds good to you, it is probably worth buying. With regards to the gameplay, unfortunately my opinion has come down a bit. The game is well designed in the sense that encounters are very often dangerous but enough preparation can mitigate anything, so it's always a tradeoff of how much you're willing to risk your ship and your crew to progress, with luck playing a less critical role. Yes there's garbage areas that just damage you and you can't know it in advance whereas others shower you with loot, but run ending randomness buttfucking you in the ass is not really a thing in this game.Onto to the bad bit. Almost immediately after my initial report, I managed to find a busted combo of items that could be abused every single turn to make the core game trivial. I also happened upon BGG posts about another combo which straight up breaks the game. That second part has been errata'd out afterwards apparently, but the combo I found should be the type of thing you get out of Groundhog-daying the game, not on your first run. What I'm saying is, the game's balance is not all it could be, but your mileage may vary.

And in the end, you either bend over backwards for their specific take or actively avoid it with a change. Look at Chinatown. People liked Chinatown. People wanted a reprint of Chinatown. Some people said the theming of Chinatown was sorta of good because "it promotes the immigrant experience of working hard for success" whilst at the same time criticised it because they thought the box art was a bit lazy or even potentially offensive/racist. But to REALLY stretch things, the board represents city blocks, and some easter eggs on the board included car crashes and some people claimed "the car crashes on the board are playing into a stereotype that asians are bad drivers!" (Many board games have boards with easter eggs, Scythe's board is FILLED with easter eggs/vignettes. Having stuff happening in a city on a board is not racism.)There is a Family Guy joke about the FCC:https://youtu.be/0SBu2FsVTtA>Gentleman, we got 20 calls about the David Hyde Pierce incident and as you know, 1 call equals a billion people, which means 20 billion people were offended by this. Needless to say, something must be done.20 people criticise something on the gulag and all of a sudden board game companies treat it like 20,000 potential customers. Chinatown was rethemed to Waterpark. The people who vaguely praised it as well as criticising it then got mad because "it was an opportunity to hire Asian artists in the creative process!" But they only knee jerked BECAUSE a few people go nuts over every little thing.

I don't give a fuck about fantasy blacks, but when it's something that is an established community, that's when it's actually annoying. I don't want to see brown vikings. Picture two games: one with a white viking crew, or le nigerian vikingsOne of these options doesn't actually need to be a good game to get people to buy it
>>97023511>20 people criticise something on the gulag and all of a sudden board game companies treat it like 20,000 potential customers.Board games have always capitulated too hard when presented with any challenge compared to practically everywhere else in geek culture. Settlers of Catan dropped the Settlers, just because it has bad connotations and people wanted to decolonise the space or something, even though Catan was, in lore, uninhabited (as well as being completely fictional). But then people were like:>URRM SAYING IT WAS UNIHABITED OR VIRGIN LAND IS LIKE WHAT COLONISTS DID IN AMERICA.
>>97023856>I don't want to see brown vikingsI don't care about seeing brown viking at all, but it would be trivial to re-theme to barbary corsairs sailing out of algeria. the laziness is more of a problem than the idealogy.

>>97024527this is the only controversy in the last like 15 years in games (board or video) that has been remotely reasonable.>>97023795What you fail to realize is that this mentality is quite literally why it keeps happening. People like Suzanne Sheldon have careers in the industry because they decided that the only way to market board games is to take advice from shut ins on bluesky to "own the chuds". The point is rage bait marketing, and it works because people who regurgitate social justice slogans are some of the least critical consumers out there despite what they say on social media. It's the same reason people melt down about Phil Elkund's 7 paragraph essay in Pax Pamir 1E despite never having played the game or even having read it because it argued being a colony was better than being a battleground/plaything of multiple empires. The reality is that board games don't have a lot going on, so the progressives in the hobby tilt at racist windmills that have never existed because black people by and large don't want to buy and play card and board games that are more complicated than Uno for the same reason most chinese people aren't playing 2k. And it is a microaggression because whilst ignorant and not intended, it causes hurt. What are some of the games where other players cannot drag you down (that much) if they are "stupid"? Or rather, the games where you do not have to negotiate with the table why they have to pull some moves, and can let them be "stupid" on their own. I'm trying to not have games be exclusively MPS and still have some kind of interaction, where other players' "misplays" do not have too severe consequences for the game state.Example:> Player X does not do crucial thing he must do so player Y does not run away with the game because he's pigeonholed into his own strategy, or thinks getting 3 points against all players now is better than player Y getting 10 points against everyone (including him) a turn or two from now.Games that do not fit this:> Cyclades> Hansa Teutonica> Puerto Rico> Inis> Root> Pax PamirGames that closely enough fit this:> Terraforming Mars> Beyond the Sun> Concordia> Lorenzo Il Magnifico> Tyrants of the Underdark> New Frontiers

Both of which Gloomhaven has in spades, though it can feel slow particularly in the levelling department. We go through 2-3 scenarios per meet up, and some evenings we don't level up once. It's kind of necessary for how huge the game is though, and the scenarios are varied enough that it's not really an issue. The thing Gloomhaven nails though is that it's an actual game and not a brain dead dice chucker. It forces you to think about how to use your actions, which means that you get to have an actual sense of accomplishment when you beat a scenario. I think people who derisively call it a puzzle game are offended by this aspect in particular, and that's the most mental part.>>97031014>muh eleganceGet off /bgg/ and go grind your abstracts. Most others are mostly combat (Gloomhaven, Tales of the Red Dragon Inn) or mostly exploration/story (7th Citadel, Sleeping Gods, Tainted Grail). Unlike the exploration/story campaigns, combat in this one is a lot of fun instead of feeling like a chore you have to get through.
>>97032072I like other dungeon crawlers and I dislike Gloomhaven.
>>97031609There seems to be a huge discrepancy in what people think of it. The ones who insist that it is first and foremost a skill game (with a memory aspect) that goes extremely deep for the game's weight and playtime... and those who insist it is inherently chaotic and impossible to calculate; a single slot difference between what you expect they'll do has massive chaotic consequences downstream.Without having played it I tend to believe the latter, but I'd have to try it.
>>97031006This is futile and just leads back to MPS. It's like a squared circle or rock god can't lift. If misplays don't affect the game state severely, it definitionally isn't high interaction.

>>97031609You're welcome anon. Glad you enjoy it
>>97031857>>97031910I've only played it twice, so take this with a grain of salt. It's a pleasingly tight worker placement game, but it really wants you to replay it a lot; a core part of the game are the tricks you perform, and the game lets you jump through a multitude of hoops to get there; learn it, get the materials for it, prepare it, get the right slot, perform it. Now, because materials are a pain to get and you kinda want to perform tricks of the same school of magic (can't remember if that gets you bonusses or disencourages you from going wide), you should have a relatively good idea which trick you'll get during the course of the game. That's quite a bit of mental work and I do prefer to initially play games by gut to get a feeling for them, so that might've been a problem. Trickerion also has this very weirdly convoluted system of who performs which trick when. Takes up a significant amount of the rulesload yet is almost entirely irrelevant. The rulebook also is subpar and you REALLY shouldn't play without the dark alley module. All in all it's fine. As anon said, I found it too long and not interesting enough, despite liking the theme. I could see the experience being much better if you like to go in deep and think about trick sequencing before the game really starts, but it didn't really sway me after two games. Additionally, it's one of the games you need to at least skip through the rulebook if you haven't played it in a few months. Wait I need to prepare the tricks on my personal board before using them, even if it's two fucking rings, right? Do I lose the resources? Can I learn ANY trick or just the one at the top? And such.6/10, good game I won't play again.
>>97031096>>97032389Yeah I had the same moment of wait what the fuck is that followed by the oh ofc it's the two-factory stack that takes less space and is more visibile. It's a bit weird, I agree.

Yellow has excellent economy and Blue can support with beastly initiative bombs to clear up the path for their teammate.Red has some good aggression control tiles that combo well with their natural spawn progression on the Police track. with good car support and the double shotguns I could mobilize a lot of people to to take over areas relatively easy. The one I can't seem to grasp yet is Green; it's like the balanced faction but because of that I feel I can't find its strengths quick enough to support or take the initiative.
Cole is really losing it baka
You would too if you had to keep making Root expansions
>>97033056Pretty sure none of the expansions are directly designed by him, he's just a consultant.
>>97033063The first expansion that was true for is the clockwork expansion.
>>97033056I'd just use AI :)
>>97033006What are you talking about?
>>97033075Here you go:The Pine Marten SentriesA nimble, territorial patrol faction built around ambush, lookout posts, and reactive defense.ThemePine martens are solitary, agile hunters who guard the treetops. This faction represents a loose network of vigilant sentries who coordinate through signals and lookout perches to police key forest routes. How They Play (concise)Perches (Buildings):Light, elevated lookout posts placed in clearings.Perches extend Line of Sight along connected paths. They grant bonuses when enemies move or battle near them.Sentry Tokens:Small ambush-style tokens placed on paths or in clearings.Trigger when an enemy moves through: either slow them, deal a hit, or let you reposition.Alert Track:A simple momentum track that rises when their tokens trigger or when they successfully defend.Higher Alert levels grant extra reactions, movement, or card draw.Territorial Scoring:Score for maintaining Perches in unbroken chains and for controlling “high-traffic” clearings (i.e., where enemies moved last turn).Playstyle SummaryA reactive, area-controlling skirmish faction that rewards prediction and clever placement. They don’t dominate with raw numbers—they win by making the forest dangerous to cross.
>>97033151The great part about AI is that you don't need a game designer anymore, so the profits can go directly to the company instead.
I now get why people shit on bga. I forgot my premium ran out and kept wondering why the search queueing suddenly took like 2 days instead of 5 minutes. The difference is absolutely insane, I played a whole game of knarr every day, now I have been waiting for one for 4 days. Using it this way is decidedly less convenient and fun.For the record, I still think 40 euros is a small price for the sheer amount of games try out and play, but it's getting into 'is this really necessary' territory.
>>97033151garbage in -> garbage out :^
>>97009551>Which board game is art?Photosynthesis, too bad it's shit>Favorite game with a timer?Meeple Circus>Confess your bgg sinsI unironically enjoy Space Base
>>97033258how is that great? great for whom?
>>97034821Companies are people too
>>97034821I think anon was sarcastic about itNot like it could come up with a good and coherent original ruleset anyway. But let's see the good: I expect there to be vastly fewer shitty translations of rulebooks in the future
>>97035089>I expect there to be vastly fewer shitty translations of rulebooks in the futureDon't. Crunchyroll is already using LLMs to translate anime and it's somehow worse than before.
>>97035089combinatorial iteration is a valid design method. AI tools are as applicable to game design as they are to anything else; the fact that most people are just going to generate trash doesn't mean much.
>>97030926I haven't played either, but oathsworn seems better regarded by the genpop of no friends for d&d that most seem to enjoy these dull affairs and mage knight better regarded here. I have played a little Gloomhaven and the idea that you can't loot after a battle is so contrived and inane I just tapped out. To me it is a seriously retarded game on some fundamental levels even if it's light tactics rpg combat is okay to good.
>>97036129I think a lot of people who get really invested into the Haven system rarely mention how fucking god awful base Gloomhaven is to onboarding.I think I played the first scenario like 3 times before we beat it proper, and it was because people couldn't crack how to actually handle the combat encountersAlso...I think it's just a genuinely difficult scenario, considering that the ones after are much easier for a long time afterJaws of the Lion is just a better game overall honestly, because I don't think the city phase adds much to OG Gloomhaven
>>97036129>To me it is a seriously retarded game on some fundamental levels even if it's light tactics rpg combat is okay to good. Not letting you loot is a very intentional decision. You not liking it doesn't make it fundamentally retarded.
>>97036129Oh God it's the retarded "I cant loot at the end" comment again
>>97036334>>97036338The lack of looting is probably the most indicative aspect of Gloom's surface level design thoughA purely mechanical element with no thematic grounding under the guise of providing pressure but with the real intention of preventing the systematic combat from feeling any more dull than it is. Surely if it was an actual ""RPG"" you'd give the players the decision to distribute the loot or not. If not, then funny how no other dungeon crawler/hex battler/scenario slop has this issue.
>>97036600It's not an RPG. It does provide pressures into the system. It's better than most other dungeon crawlers.
>>97036600Anon that’s the entire fucking point. Gloomhaven is good because it *isn’t* pretending to be a shitty pseudo-RPG. It’s a board game with board game style mechanical interactions, with enough theme to be flavorful without it interfering with the mechanics.
>>97036764>Gloomhaven is good because it's badokay
>>97036734You are what you spend your time on, solitairefag.
>>97036897>incapable of understanding anything I accept your concession
>>97036129>have played a little Gloomhaven and the idea that you can't loot after a battle is so contrived and inane I just tapped out.I haven't played gloomhaven in ages. Can you explain what this means?
>>97036764Not really sure what you mean by this. Gloomhaven is pretending to be a gamebook like fabled lands and the the game's interactivity is the best part, not the card combat.
>>97037219If you’re boiling Gloomhaven’s encounter design as “card combat” I don’t really know what to say to you anon. Utilizing your character’s tools to solve the puzzle of each scenario IS the game.
>>97030690>Kinda need more information. She wants to 'do something' for my birthday, while i want to avoid 'doing anything'. Playing a new game came up as a possible middle ground, among other things. It'd probably be just us. Co-op games are a non starter. Something MPS adjacent wouldn't be bad. Something fun to lose. Even if it's something that would be unfitting on paper, but would have non immediate value (such as playing with other people later), then i could stomach it. I've played 2player Inis with her a few times, and that went well enough. If there doesn't seem to be anything good enough, i'll just think of something else to do. Maybe we could paint miniatures? Has anyone tried that sort of thing? I've also been thinking about just getting some digimon starter decks/boosters packs, but i'm unsure how that would go over.
>>97030690>Even if it's something that would be unfitting on paper, but would have non immediate value (such as playing with other people later), then i could stomach it.Meaning of the suggestions, Century Spice Road seems the best to me, over all.How is Wingspan actually? It might be worth getting just for the memes.
>>97037233I'm looking for a board game, not MTG with miniatures.
How do we feel about Frosthaven? I like the town builder aspect of it, and it seems like the new characters and effects in the game were intriguing.
>>97037265Yeah that’s why Gloomhaven is the best dungeon crawler: it’s a board game first and foremost and knows it.
>>97037233I just don't like not being able to do a certain move because I discarded it. In descent my guy has skills but the don't get discarded most of the time.
>>97037267
>>97037281>card game combat>board gameNo.
>>97036734Your average /vm/fag everybody
>>97037363easily the most retarded take ever posted
>>97037431What part of "I don't want to play MTG" do you not understand?
>>97037363>replace dice rolls with a deck of cards instead>as you grow stronger you can remove undesirable results and add even higher ones into the mix (simulating more or bigger die)>suddenly no longer a board game It's a dice system you can modify. That would be plenty challenging to do with a real die.
>>97037326You value simplicity. That's fine. But complexity and quality are totally divorced and that goes in both directions. Plenty of complex games are excellent and I'm sorry you can't enjoy them. >>97037363You people are fucking unbelievable lmao
>>97037451If you think every usage of cards is MtG then you need to play more games
>>97037451if you think resolving combat steps is playing magic then you don't know anything about magic OR card games
>>97037482It works differently than a dice thoever due to you not reshuffling until a crit or miss
>>97037482>That would be plenty challenging to do with a real die.idk my neighbor wanted printed dice and they came out pretty good. I think you could do custom dice pretty easy like 2-7 or 2-12 there are already six-sided d3 and all kinds of other fucked up versions, making color coded modded dice might be feasible.
>>97038318>and they came out pretty good. How fair do they roll?
>>97038336more fair than my old plastic chessex. the whole point was she bought a bunch of dice and they wouldn't float so these were made to float but they're so lite they don't seem to be biased. I choose 2 walls and 2 top with 10% gyroid infill (because it's 3d and doesn't bias as much as directional). to be fair I didn't actually roll them but they were better than I expected.
>>97037267really cool character design and scenario design on average is pretty interesting. honestly i could leave the town building, but it's a nice sense of progression
>>97037451"ah yes let me pul out my miniatures for the weekly game of Magic the Gathering, i discard a card face down to move two hexes, that's a thing we do here in MTG" said nobody ever
>>97037451Genuine question, is dune (2019) combat also mtg?
>>97037285I haven't played Descent but I already know it's shit. You know how? See what that bag upfront contains? One more confirmation that people who don't like Gloomhaven are dice brained morons.
