So if I’m reading this right, discipline master works like apothecaries from 2.0 where it’s technically one unit but explodes into characters for multiple units. If so it’s odd it takes a character slot and not support

he takes a command slot, not a character slot

in practice this is a means of limiting your choice and encouraging you to take Oversight Delegation detachments alongside your PD or AD, using Command Troops to afford them, but not limiting your ability to load up on rogue psykers if you really want to; since Discipline Masters are your easiest source of high LD etc, you need that, but it would be onerous to require you to take one Command Troop for every three Discipline Masters since you need so many to make your numerous units viable, or to require you to duplicate the detachment tree just to get Mounted DMs for the other half of your army

Among the Ranks balances this out by making you hemmorhage VP when someone figures out your DMs are all separate units

Otherwise - painting, mostly. Running a demo at the end of the month, met my deadline for getting everything ready on my end, and so I'm moving on to other units in the interim. Gotta get through more of what I have so I can justify spending on new stuff.

>>
>>97027038
Take some saturnine terminators. They get to shoot their guns during volley fire because implacable advance, and as SoH it is at full BS instead of snap shots. Free double shooting phase.
>>
>>97027158
>Are destroyers Good
Destroyers are glass cannons. Theyre expensive for 1w 3+ infantry, but they have a damage output that simply removes if they get to use it. Theyre also a ranged unit with a real shot to score vanguard (if they deep strike) thanks to that.

>>97027144
>>97027038
Destroyer spam is probably not super effective for SoH (relative to other legions) because destroyers have the SoH legion trait built in. They already volley fire at full BS.
>>
>>97027038
Terminators, the answer is terminators. Its both mechanically pretty decent (many lists simply arent equipped to deal with a lot of terminators) but they also take advantage of the SoH trait in a thematic way.

If not that? Take a load of assault weapons, double fire via charges.

It would be the most hated rule in the game, but I do think theres something there.

Maybe tie it to a special character/character prime upgrade. Something like "one step ahead: Once per game, at the start of your shooting phase, you may nominate a single unit of enemy [adeptus astartes], [solar auxilia] or [imperialis militia] infantry or cavalry within 24" of this model. The unit must make a leadership test, if it is failed then you roll a D6 for every model in a unit, for every 4+(5+? 6+?) one model (picked by the owning player) is treated as under the control of the Alpha Legion player. It gains the Legiones Astartes [Alpha Legion] trait instead of its current legion trait. All models controlled in such a way are considered a new unit under the control of the Alpha Legion player and are locked in combat with their former unit (for the purposes of any rules that trigger when one unit charged: assume neither side counts as charging)"

>>
>>97027884
I think I know which art piece influenced you. But saturnines are a very "specific" unit, one thats balanced by its limited options. Giving them a "generally good" high damage gun like the assault cannon makes their high durability a problem (and its not like their slow speed matters much when they have three assault cannons each)

And on top of that you made them even more obnoxious by letting them overwatch for friendly units. Which further mitigates the normal saturnine weakness of "well what if they simply dont engage with your overpriced terminator deathstar"
>>
>>97027908
This kind of goes for every other "saturnines, but what if they had more annoying guns!" unit. Look at the current saturnine loadout, their generalist gun is that plasma bombard. Which is "okay" but is clearly not a very exceptional weapon. Their other gun is the disintegrator that kills them and has very specific targets it wants to fire at for that exact reason.
Saturnines are incredibly tanky and the sort of unit that very few weapons are designed to kill effectively, this is balanced out by their difficulty in getting to do the things they want to do.

Only see 10 man squads in the new edition. Don't blame people, because outside of farming VP on an objective tactical squads are completely useless now.
>>
>>97029156
I've run a 20-man pyrae despoiler blob and a 50-man levy mob. Neither performed very well but at least the levy blob distracted a volkite kratos, which is more than I can say for the despoilers.

>>97029214
It doesn't do shit. Even terminators are toughness 5 now, nothing cares about being shot by bolters. Except for other cheap chaff, but everything kills tacticals now that they lost heart of the legion.
Also, for only 20 points more than a bare bones tactical squad most people take nuncio vox btw you can have a plasma predator which can kill elite and heavy infantry in addition to cleaning up tactical squads. If they didn't have Line 2, nobody would bring tactical squads.

Every army should start with 40 of either tactical or despoilers, 20 of whichever you didn't pick, and then 20 of either breacher or assault squad. You can wrap back around and bolster of your other 20 blocks up to 4, or 2 to 30, for a nice lean 100 later, but 40 troops is a good start before you can get to the other parts of your force

>Mechanicum
Protector Squad. [Arcana] Retinue squad of 3-5 cheapish bodyguard adepts, generic Mechanicum techpriest statline but with 4+ saves and fairly poor mental stats, as well as no comptroller/battlesmith/firing/protocols. The entire squad starts with bolt pistols only and must choose to take one option each from either the Mech Ranged Weapons list (in which case the squad gains Implacable Advance) or the Mech Melee Weapons list (in which case the squad gains Infiltrate (12). Generic scoring squad to put with a Magos if you don't have better ones in your arcana, as well as a replacment for the old servo-automata with actual gun options.

>Also Mechanicum
Aerostatic. [Arcana] Transport flyer with a couple of ball-turreted heavy weapons, the usual list. Because it's a hovering airship it has a custom strike mission that brings it in, drops off the squad inside and then anchors it in place unable to move for the rest of the game like a floating drop pod, where it can hose down whatever.

>Alpha Legion
False Contacts, a 0-1 prime advantage. Whenever you would deploy that unit anywhere but inside a transport, you can put a marker down/move the existing marker to where it would be deployed and leave it in Reserves. In the Reserves phase of any future turn, after you roll reserves, you can choose to ignore the result and automatically deploy it at the marker unless there's an enemy unit next to said marker, at which point it's vulnerable to Intercept (and having a bunch of bad guys standing on the marker, at which point you can't select it because there's no viable space for it to deploy in). I like the idea of a unit threatening to outflank on both board edges and then just popping in in your deployment zone because there's a squad to clear up there after all. Could have way more restrictions or be a bespoke squad of recons or something, I just like blips.

Is there any writing on pre-Dread designs? Since the Age of Strife and Unification Wars are functionally only ever mentioned in the same way a wikipedia article without any information is, I can only assume there's very little out there. I am just trying to wrap my head around how the hell they rapidly ramped up their creation to the point of having multiple different production models even before the Horus Heresy. Were they STCs? Archeotech that someone found and said, "Fuck it, put a space marine in here." If so, why only Space Marines? How is it that there is no similar device for the great human warriors? Clearly it isn't because Marine bodies can withstand the process, as they're throwing various levels of meat sack into a machine and hoping it'll turn on. It also implies that they were specifically made for Marines, which means they were designed before Marines were ever actually fielded in large numbers. Both of these implications seem... weird.
>>
>>97030631
>If so, why only Space Marines?
Dreadnoughts were also used by the Imperial Army before the HH.
>>
>>97030769
Interesting, why was that not continued? Is there any information on where they came from? I understand the reason they don't throw just anyone in them. But it also seems a bit weird that the Imperium doesn't take its greatest heroes who are slain (or near enough) and hurl them into a Dread to keep fighting. Surely if they can do that for #2305812 Spess Mahreen they can do that for a character who was truly important during a battle.
>>
>>97030780
Most info on dreadnought origins was in Imperial Army Volume 2, which is quite old now And it's been a while since I've read it But basically dreadnoughts are reserved for marines for the same reasons rhinos and land raiders are in 40k: there aren't many of them, they barely understand the tech well enough to maintain and repair them, and only a very small number of new ones can be constructed at any time. Some castraferrum dreadnoughts even are relics dating from the Age of Strife.

It wasn't that they were effective, it's that they were rare and therefore cool. Now that anybody can just have them, they're basically just Plasma 2.0
Gone are the days of the entire community trying to theorycraft how to make a Moritat with 2 of them work. Iron Hands and Space Wolves were the best options we came up with FYI. The former for the improved Invuln, the latter for the +1 Wound armour. That said, IH Mori's usually were much better off with dual Grav Pistols since those things could SHRED Contemptors thanks to Haywire.

That said, you can do that now pretty well thanks to Overcharged Plasma Pistols. You might need a second guy, but it's pretty doable. Easily if you're running that one Blackshields Oath that can make them BS7.

I feel like melee weapons have lost a lot of paunch this edition. A lot of legion specific melee weapons are either just regular weapons with an extra rule, or a slightly modified profile that's more about being balanced than being unique.
>>
>>97037801
some ligma stuff? maybe auxilia infantry or some tanks for base decoration or objective markers - maybe the darkmech walkers if hes a traitor and is into that, since they have rules?
>>
>>97037817
I think most of the blame lies in the points prices of the weapon lists. I think sometimes getting a thunder hammer J's mere +5 pts over a regular power sword lol. Legion specific blades just can't compete with that. It's like the chinese market
>>
>>97037855

Depends on what stuff. Meteor Hammers are pretty good, while scythes for instance are overpriced for what they do.

battlefleet heresy is okay tbqh. its basically just bfg with imperial vs chaos. yeah it can get samey but those were the most developed fleets anyway, and the legion rules are mostly decent. its fine for a break imo

i really didnt like the epic30k rules though. even legion had a hundred million options and yet nothing super special for any one legion so it was incredibly samey, and mechanicum were pretty OP in my experience. Ligma has better list composition even if the base rules are terrible. ligma would be okay enough if you moved and shot in the same activation

Then once I get enough ships I might try it but considering how abstract the AU ship statlines are I doubt that what I'm planning to build will fit BFH as is without some proxying.

The AU rules were (abandoned) wips and were pushed out alongside the 30k releases to give stats to the forumware stuff getting made. Glyn from the netEA forums is making a list that strips most of the options, fixes some mistakes and rebalances everything to fit with the other netEA lists while the epicHAMMER group is going the opposite direction and going balls to the wall with options and special rules. There are other successors to the AU lists but most of the time I'm not too interested in what they do so I just pilfer stuff from those 2.

I like that LIgma is giving us epic scale 30k stuff without having to jump to secret handshakes groups to get some but that's that. There were a lot of things I wished from LIgma which weren't done which would make playing it now leave a sour taste in my mouth even if they decided to fix them (like those sections in the core rules that go nowhere and don't get referenced by anything or the infantry miniature having those undercuts).

I feel like its fairly easy to justify. It (and the drop pod) are one of the few ways to take a DS transport, which is situationally very powerful (or at least very interesting).

How else are you going to teleport 10 meltas/flamers/whatever right where you need them?

I read this, it's funny. The idea of dropping giant robots on the defenders to tip the scales is framed like deep insight.

>‘You will go to the surface. You will direct your Legion to encircle the walls of the Palace with unbreakable siege lines. Yes, improve the contravallation. Yes, have your Stor Bezahsk show the others how to conduct a barrage. But this is not all I wish you to accomplish. Very soon the Emperor’s grip on the warp around Terra will be prised loose. Mortarion, Angron and Fulgrim will then descend, and the Neverborn allies our patrons promise will be able to manifest soon afterwards. You will–’ Horus broke off suddenly and looked up, hearkening to a call Perturabo couldn’t hear. The Warmaster’s gaze slid along the lines of motionless Word Bearers. He stared into nothingness for a while, then regarded his brother again.

>‘So there is nothing for me to do other than dig more ditches while false gods steal my victory?’ said Perturabo.

>‘No, my dear brother. All the daemons spawned since time began will not win us victory. Nor will the Legiones Astartes. We require a greater power.’

>‘Titans,’ said Perturabo decisively. ‘Landing our Titans without their destruction is the key. Too far from the Palace, they are at risk of counter-attack. Too near, and their landing craft will be targeted and brought down.’

>Horus nodded. A pointed tongue slid along teeth that appeared momentarily sharp.

>‘You will have your victory, and all the triumphs due you. When you accomplish the task I set you, every creature in the galaxy will know your name, all shall fear you. None shall doubt your brilliance.’

>Perturabo listened, rapt.

>‘Only you can do this.’ Horus gripped Perturabo’s pauldrons in both hands and stared into his eyes. Heat from the Warmaster’s body warmed his armour. ‘You will find me a way to get Titans past the wall, Perturabo,’ said Horus, ‘and directly into the Imperial Palace.’

>Too far from the Palace, they are at risk of counter-attack
I don't get this
>>
>>97041878
It takes time to close the distance from point A to point B. The greater the distance, the more time it takes to close it. The more time it takes to close it, the more time there is for the enemy to prepare a counterattack.
>>
>>97041817
The whole point of this scene isnt actually about the robots. Its just Horus knowing he has to stroke his brothers ego because hes the only one with the big fuck off artillery systems capable of destroying the walls AA systems which were constantly obliterating their airships and subsequent transports

I'm tempted to after my word bearers dive back into the blackshields mines with a bunch of pseudo astartes corpses being puppeteered by my mechanicum as frontline assault force after the loyalists blew the Forge world up, severely crippling their forces. It'd be interesting basically making the main fighting forces of my late heresy mechanicum, as I haven't really done that yet, the only real hints of it are my scoria standin who's built from a lord discordant as a "gift" from the word bearers as the prime heretek of the Forge world.

It's more just the models don't really do anything much at all once you deploy them, so why bother

It would help getting breacher vets into "fuck you" territory though.

But it isnt.
>>
>>97042753
Eh not really, the demolisher cannon is nesr impossible to miss on a vehicle and even accounting for armor bane pens more reliably then the laser destroyer due to higher strength. The laser destroyer is only better for targeting specifically 2+ save non vehicles that you can get a lot of hits on, because 5-6 ap3 breaching 5+ hits is still better than 2 AP2 shots that still need to roll to hit.

>>97042753
The demolisher cannon is more flexible (and cheaper) than the laser destroyer.

It is however worse vs tanks (because its shorter range makes its ordnance(D) much harder to proc) and only Ap3 so you arent flattening entire terminator units.

>He didn't stockpile kits for when they inevitably go oop
Skill issue
>>
>>97027630
Easy pezzy, im not gonna be able to make a clever name for all of them but off the top of my head

>WE
Vet breachers that come stock with Chain blades and get a bonus attack and dont have the heavy key word, their thing that makes them special rule is, they can treat any vehicle as an assault vehicle meaning if they jump out of a vheicle VIA deep strike they can charge.

>DA: Naufragia
This one could either be saturnine or Cata terminators
Either way their stock load out would be power fist + plasma canon, SGT can take Phosphex bombs and 1 out of every 5(If saturning 1 out of 3) can take a phosphex canister launcher Which is 18" small blast Phosphex bomb

>TS or WB: Sorcerer Cabal
HQ choice would be a sorcerer who can buy Thralls to accompany him, and eat his perils of the warp and or sacrifice them in order to gain stronger spells when he casts.

>Bonus Dark angel unit: Raven wing retinue
Can be mounted on outriders or Sky hunters, more or less the same load out at Preator retinue but all of them gain implacable advance, firestorm, hit and run.
>>
>>97042944
>Chain blades
Sorry not chain blades, Chain axes. also the entire unit itself has breaching 6+ on chain axes.
>>
>>97042944

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in

No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken

Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Semi-related but if (when) they update the Custodes kits to add femstodes, they should give the female heads hair styles based on those from antiquity, rather than those dumb half shaved heads they give most of the sig-marines.

The teen thing is mostly 40k, because the techniques/surgeries and geneseed have degraded over 10 millenias.

Luther and Kor Phaeron couldn't be made into proper space marines because they were old.

Yeah, and incredibly those rapists were not only preadolescent children, but also the most hardened and violent criminals on the whole planet. It's shocking but completely true.
>>
>>97045185
Knowing Citadel they'll probably just wing it and recycle the latter. Maybe also more of those small helmets they've been using since the rest of their 40k-specific kits. In any case, both are a waste over actual wargear options that could be on the sprue.
>>
>>97045185
>the female heads hair styles based on those from antiquity

from the perspective of people living 28,000 years in our future, there's basically no difference between us and the ancient greeks

if they remember anything of us down to the hairstyles - and ours would be those of deep antiquity to them - then they're unlikely to recall Victoriaen aesthetes' interpretations or Hollywood Roman Hair

more practically speaking most societies don't have high-maintenance hair, militaristic societies don't favour grabbable hair and if you're going into combat for protracted periods, shaving anything that can harbor lice is a good idea
>>
>>97045364
>from the perspective of people living 28,000 years in our future, there's basically no difference between us and the ancient greeks
Actually things lasted for a lot longer in Antiquity, architecture, fashion and cuisine styles lasting for sometimes millenia. Modern time would look chaotic and less appealing.
