What are Kurita planetary militias like?Do they send all their mechs into the DCMS to fight or do they have planetary guards?
>>97029723They have tons of mechwarriors that have their own mechs and guard their own homes. How do you think the Ronin War happened?
>>97029723I think they're fairly similar to anywhere else. They have privately owned mechs and corporate security forces, and when they aren't kill on sight, mercenaries. Units like the ALAG are doing the Wagner thing of being "private" but heavily intertwined with government and corporate authority. With their WW2 imperial Japan shtick, I imagine they make the regular citizens at least pretend to be ready to take up arms for the Combine at any moment.
Is ageing as a Clanner the worst scenario?
>>97030150They'd probably say so, but I think dying like a bitch is worse. An old clanner can at least die useful or maybe even redeem themselves for not dying younger, a young clanner who trips on a rock and busts their head is just a loser.
>>97030150Sort of. It's more accurate to say, "ageing uselessly and without notable deeds" is the Clanners worst-case scenario. Even Clanners respect old(ish) people in positions of leadership, and even Clanners do (mostly) recognize that operational and strategic leadership requires experience, which requires age.So that's why Bloodnamed Clanners in their 40+'s aren't held in active contempt. Yes, the *assumption* is that older warriors are inferior, and the older warrior is more likely to get challenged if they falter, because age is an automatic strike against you and the Clanners take the idea of "younger=superior" as axiomatic. But as long as you're badass enough, you can keep on driving Mechs into your 50s or even later and the Clans won't give you shit as long as you keep being badass. But the Clanner who doesn't get sponsored for a Bloodname, or doesn't own one, or isn't in a leadership position, is less and less likely to remain a Warrior Caste member after they turn 30. It's aging in THAT scenario, with no notable deeds and no name and no chance of passing on your genetic legacy: THAT'S the worst-case scenario.
>>97030150Being a periphery slave is probably worse. But aside from that? Probably yeah.
>>97030735That's just being a clan civilian. Any warrior can shoot any civilian in the head and the only people who are even allowed to lodge a complaint about it are the toothless caste council that civilian was working under and other warriors if they feel like getting into a potentially lethal duel about some random schmuck they might have been bullying.
>>97030730Is there a scenario in which a warrior would be a total badass but still be denied a bloodname? If the society functioned perfectly, the answer is clearly no, but surely there is some story of politiking among the warrior caste.
>>97030883To earn a bloodname, you have to be available when someone with the name of your gene-mother's bloodhouse dies to open up a slot, get sponsored for a bloodname or win the grand melee, get to the trial location in time, and then win your bloodname trial. Anywhere along the way, there are chances that you could miss out on it despite being very much badass enough for the role, either through bad luck or politics. Check out the Jade Falcon trilogy if you want a detailed look the second book is mostly about Aidan earning his bloodname and the obstacles he faces along the way.
>>97030150Mira just hit the wall, she never had it allOne practice scramble a day, stuck in the 'MechbayHer dreams got spaced alive when she turned thirty-fiveOnly gotten one kill, in her first trialShe was gonna be an ace, she was gonna be a ristarShe was going to make her mark on the RemembranceHe Hunchback IIC is now the enemyLooks at her solahma life and nothing has been alrightSince Ilkhan Showers, REVIVAL,Way before ComStar schismedThere were omnis, and hot drops,Intelligence still from WolfNetHer sibkin, in the creche program,They tell her that she's rock swineBecause she's still preoccupied with30, 303055
>>97030883They only have so many slots for each bloodname, some of the big important clanners are known to have passed up the chance to compete for less prestigious names so they could go for better ones. "Kerensky" is a particularly small pool iirc and there's always a bunch of warriors waiting for someone who currently has it to croak so they can fight over it.
>>97030883Yeah Trent of Smoke Jaguar. It got so bad he got fed up with the Clan and sold them out. He is the reason Operation Bulldog happened and led to the annihilation of Smoke Jaguar.Clan Politics is some of the prettiest shit I've ever seen.
>>97030849Any Warrior will have grown up in something resembling the worst kind of military boarding school, with extra abuse (physical, verbal, psychological, sexual...you pick). Then the strong majority of them will be discarded in their early 30s. Warriors are encouraged to deny medical treatment just as much as most Civilians, and any other Warrior can shoot you in the head with minimal consequences as long as they say a few words first. But also, Warriors are like 0.01% of the Clan population.
>>97030908And it's noted multiple times that advancing through the Grand Melee almost never happens, because usually the survivor is so beat up that they're easy meat for other opponents later.
>>97031017It's just like the placement matches for new warriors, the people in charge already picked winners and losers, they only go through the motions of it being open because they'd have riots on their hands if they didn't. Anyway, here's your Assassin C for the contest, Star League original myomer, sensors, cockpit seat stains. Go get em champ, and watch out for that Masakari.
>>97031063I took the Locust you gave me and broke your Dire Wolf. Sorry about that. So what's my bloodname now?
>>97030983Prettiest/pettiest.Hate phone posting.
>>97030983>>97031165My favorite thing about Clan politics is how hypocritical is.They're run by a tiny military elite with extraordinary privileges that's obsessed with bloodlines that TOTALLY ISN'T a nobility. They're a complete meritocracy except for the fact that your bloodline determines exactly where you start on the ladder, and as noted politics are involved at every fucking level of their testing and promotion system.Their society doesn't waste anything, except for all the materiel consumed in incredibly petty things. Trials aren't just for shit like territory or property, someone could insult a rival Star Captain and end up with a couple dozen Mechs getting shot to hell.At least the Snow Ravens are honest about the fact that every fucking thing they do is politics, mostly around their noble houses.
>>97031224>My favorite thing about Clan politics is how hypocritical is.Just like Inner Sphere politics and real life politics.
Suppose there's this freeborn mechwarrior Bob who beats Natasha K and Aidan Pryde in duel and shits. Will he be still looked down on because of him being a freeborn?
>>97031236They will cope and seethe and Sneed's Seed & Feed.
>>97031232The Clans are more than most of the IS.
>>97031236>Will he be still looked down on because of him being a freeborn?Yes, and deservedly so. Feeeborns are only barely even people. They don not deserve privileges. It does not matter who are beat or what you do. You will always be a freeborn in the same way you will never be a woman. It is just inherent to your being.
>>97031373Is he the dude who got beheaded by 160cm boi?
>>97031224because it was founded by a hypocrite who used the excuse of this social system to kill his opposition and keep control. All the original Ilkhans were decided by him and on the fact they agreed with him. We're talking about a guy who murdered his own brother just on the paranoia that his popularity would lead to an usurpation (it never happened and said brother was out in the field fighting against non-clanners when he was assassinated) and also had an entire clan wiped for disagreeing with his overly rigid system. What DOESN’T make sense is how after this guy croaks, clan wolf somehow becomes the reasonable middle of the road types with a protagonist label slapped on meanwhile Smoke Jaguar and Jade Falcon becomes cartoonishly evil, despite one of them actually growing a brain and choosing to ignore the honor larp when fighting the spheroids.
>>97031390Clan Wolf has Nicky's original journal, so in theory their khans know it's all a farce and just go with the flow because it gives them power.
>>97031236>>97031236Joanna Falcon killed Natasha in the cockpit of her Direwolf with the jump jets of her mech and only got two lines in the rememberence before being thrown into a Solahma unit.
>>97031424That's only one line, the second line was for fucking an entire sibko to death without taking any breaks in between.
>>97031443>the second line was for fucking an entire sibko to death without taking any breaks in betweenFair. Would that more musclegirls looked to her as an example.
>>97031390Thought Andery was assisted suicide or something
>>97031443you're joking, right? right...?
Was there a fluff reason for Nick Malthus painted his Summoner red? Wonder what paint scheme is that
>>97031533Yeah, Joanna fucked sibkos for the love of the game, not glory. Still probably killed a kid or two here and there, but who's counting? If they were worthy of their bloodheritage they wouldn't have lost pelvic integrity or drowned so easily.
>>97031546I'm not sure if one is ever stated, but it could be a tradition of his bloodhouse or specific heritage. They're allowed to have their own little cultures and traditions separate from the clan at large. Or he's just high enough rank that no one can call him on it.
>>97031546It might just be the color scheme of the Falcon's Claws unit, since it's a special cluster let off the leash. I haven't seen the cartoon in so long that I don't remember what the other clanners mech colors are.
>>97031550She is the person that everyone thinks that Misato is.
Clan culture is NOT a cult of youth. For as contemptuous as elegan/tg/entlement are about the meme cultures of Reddit, Discord, and Facebook, most of our own attention spans are only negligibly longer. The preference for brevity (or shallowness) makes the obvious obscure. And it is indeed obvious that no Clan Warrior has ever felt inferior to a Sibcadet. Younger is not axiomatically better. Clan society posits a window between infancy and senescence in which anyone is most likely to be as good as they ever will be, if they only seize their opportunity. It’s not a cult of youth, but rather a cult of crisis. Crisis comes to us from the ancient Greek term to discriminate, distinguish, decide; adjectivally critical. The Clans worship the critical point, reaching out with all one’s strength and will to grasp the moment to transcend into glory, or to let it slip through your fingers. Neither brazeness nor cunning are dezgra; prevarication and hesitation are. You don’t become solhama by getting old. It happens, at any age, when you miss your key opportunity. This is everything to Clan culture, and so everything in Clan culture is organized around forcing crises. The Six Trials are all critical points to be seized. This is also the Clanner theory of history itself: they look back at the Exodus as Aleksandr Kerensky’s judgement that the whole Inner Sphere had, for the sake of corruption, failed to seize the critical moment (the crisis of the Amaris Coup). And they apply that way of thinking to the future, as well: the whole invasion is all Six Trials writ large, culminating in the Trial of all Trials, for Terra. In the interim, the Political Century was nothing more than a long debate as to the proper interpretation of the crisis. And then the Clans were only defeated (temporarily) because the Inner Sphere of 3058, by forging a Second Star League, seized the moment that the Inner Sphere of 2780 let slip away by allowing the original Star League to crumble.
>>97031236He'll 100% be dismissed as a lucky freak win. Some scientists might incorporate his genes on the male line on the DL in case there's some freak gene, but he's not suddenly gonna get sponsorship to become a Galaxy Commander or anything.
(cont’d)The FedCom Civil War, the Jihad, and maybe most of all the passivity of the Republic of the Sphere hiding within its Wall, reinvigorated the old Clan convictions about the crisis point being the correct view of society and history. The brilliance of Les Dorscheid’s cover for Lost Destiny is it sums up in an image all these words I have wasted on you.
>>97031528Nah, he got killed randomly by enemy forces in Klondike. Some players have suggested that it was an inside job, but there's absolutely no evidence of it.
>>97031390It’s probably inaccurate to call Clan Wolf either reasonable or middle-of-the-road. But Nicholas choosing to join them granted to them a measure of self-confidence forever denied to all the rest.Clan Wolf was therefore never in a position to cope with NOT being chosen by Nicholas. The nineteen others all did, one way or another. It made them all neurotic, or in some cases even psychotic. It’s no coincidence that Clan Jade Falcon inflicted the Culling on itself immediately thereafter and the wound festered into Malvina Hazen’s bloodthirsty insanity.

>>97031734Carousel is that way, grandpa
>>97031707I don't remember any of them being butthurt about it aside from the Falcons.I think it was obvious by the end of Klondike that only the Clans that invaded Eden were in the running. The Jaguars didn't care for Nicky because he kept telling them not to kill civilians and destroy houses for no reason, and the Horses were butthurt about him using them as auxiliaries. That left the the Wolves and the Falcons. And what do you know, he joined the Clan headed by his brother-in-law, who was also like an older brother to him.Literally the only person surprised by the choice was Elizabeth Hazen.
>>97031645Andery killed himself with the assistance of Jennifer "Winson" and some soldiers he worked with.
>>97031758It’s true that Elizabeth took it hard. But you can see similar, maybe worse, problems cropping up right at the beginning with Sarah McEvedy and Ellie Kinnison. As for the Jags, a lot of what they became stems from Franklin Osis not being able to blur his vision enough to see Aleksandr and Nicholas as two volumes of one biography. What Osis did on Eden was a message to Nicholas about what Aleksandr had done there in the wake of de Chevallier’s death. Nicholas’s resulting aloofness just proved Osis’s point to the rest of his Clan forever after.
>>97031614Go away, clanner. Your lies, hypocrisy and dishonour will win you nothing here, you soulless flesh golem automaton.
>>97031424Well, he did cheat and kill her with a made up house rule (using jump jets as blast weapons) that hadnt been added to the game yet. The clanners were seething because only they and their powercreeped tech should fuck up the rules of the original game like that.
>>97032176I love that this officially became called the "I am Jade Falcon" maneuver.
>>97032219Fuck, wrong image.
>>97032164>liesWhere’s the lie?>hypocrisyLike what?>dishonorHow would you even define honor?
so nobody knows what a Clan Mongoose color scheme looks like?
>>97032323Charred steel and rusted metal.
>>97032323Considering their logo, probably some white and teal. But the Clans in general have very diverse color schemes. Their "Clan colors" are hardly universal.
>>97032261The entire clan system and culture that's supposed to avoid civilian casualties and resource waste was founded upon nuking civilian centers and razing all the infrastructure of an entire clan to the ground in an unnecessary war and erasing that from historical record. Then most of the clans completely destroy each other in a retarded war of total annihilation because of an ambiguous "spheroid taint".The beginning and end of the clans in their truest form demonstrates the utter farce that was the face of their society.
>>97032323So, fun thing. This is typical of the Nobodies. The old way to go about it is to make up your own, and if you do it good enough, it gets canonized on Camospecs.
>>97032352Clan culture is not founded on the Annihilation of the Not-Named Clan; that was a consequence of Clan culture. The Clan way is to reach out and seize the critical moment, leaving behind all who fail to do so. The Wars of Reaving were the logical outcome for those left behind, not unlike how the Inner Sphere consumed itself in the Succession Wars when Aleksandr Kerensky left the corrupt Great Houses behind. As for the truest form of the Clan ways — welcome to the era of the ilClan, freebirth.
>>97032593>As for the truest form of the Clan ways — welcome to the era of the ilClan, freebirthLol and/or lmao. And Alaric Ward's gene father was a freebirth. also his gene mother

>>97032261Honor is dying for a private company that has full control of both money and communication, while also randomly nuking your cities, and fighting alongside them against the very invaders they helped to invade your home, while not only never holding them to account, but considering them heroes.
>>97032593>As for the truest form of the Clan ways — welcome to the era of the ilClan, freebirth.Only an idiot would think the truest form of clannerism is the clans that are currently the most removed from the founding principles and practices of clan society. The true clans were those that lived in the homeworlds, as they were the societies at the time that most closely resembled the clans as the nicholas envisaged them.Currently, one of the most powerful clans is just committing orbital bombardments against civilian targets, the supposed ilclan is abandoning clan ways and becoming some ill formed spheroid domain. They're exactly as dezgra as the great houses of the succession wars, the very societies and outcome clannerism was supposed to be the antithesis of in the first place.
>>97032627adder fangs typed this post
>>97032627>against civilian targets,Well, against Capellans at least.
>>97032645I always imagined a snake would sort of hunt and peck with the tip of its tail.
>>97032323I can't find it now but somewhere I read that the Clans didn't have unified color schemes and that it was down to individual clusters to choose them. They would often times repaint equipment based on the mission environment or as a way to unify the various units operating together. The idea of having special colors was too representative of the kind of thing they abhorred the Great Houses for. This had to be sometime in the early 90s when I read it.

>>97032818The Invasion has really packed the setting with a lot of tension and dynamism that is still fresh and compelling all these years later.
>>97032865There is no tension after the initial invasion, the clans are just shown to win repeatedly for the next century as every nation in the inner sphere fails to modernize at all.
I ordered some stuff from Ral Partha and the gave me an Atlas christmas tree ornament, its so cute
>>97032906That's awesome
I like how the backbone of clan society is just being able to murder a guy for his stuff
>>97033040It's edgy fun but it's not realistic that they would somehow be the technologically superior. This kind of culture makes for very skilled individual fighters but it stagnates science and technological development.
>>97033040The foundation of every stable, successful society that exists for centuries.A psychotic fusion of kratocracy and kleptocracy is clearly the closest humanity can get to utopia.
>>97033093Clantech has been mostly stagnant since the Golden Century, when all the equipment they had during the Invasion was developed. Beyond that they've mostly created sidegrades of existing tech, or dead-ends like protomechs. They never even bothered making any other type of BA but the basic Elemental until they saw IS getting their hands on the tech and almost immediately start churning out tons of specialized BA designs for different battlefield roles. And the time they tried to copy the IS plasma rifle they actually ended up with a vastly inferior weapon (Clan plasma cannon just kind of sucks in most cases since it deals 0 damage to mechs, while the IS one is an AC/10 that also fucks with the opponent's heat management, and isn't even much worse against conventional vehicles and infantry).Clans most just have the advantage of going through a century of relative peace (or at least little large-scale conflict) where the scientists could refine the SLDF tech they started with to its limits, while the IS almost nuked itself back to stone age and then had a cabal of techno-wizards conspiring to keep their tech base from advancing. As soon as the Clans could no longer get progress by iterating on SL-era tech they basically hit a wall and remains stagnant until contact with the IS.
>just got done downloading my piecemeal archive of battletech vehicles>told, power armor, logistics decoration, logistics vehicles and mechs, and anything i could get my dirty hands on>multiple gigabytes >still don't even know why I ao frantically did this, no one plays this game tabletop hereLook at this damn thing.Isn't it cool?Im gonna print like five of these stupid things.
>>97033212Based on the facts that it only took 20 years to invent most clantech and that clantech is barely more costly to produce than what everyone else is making, clantech should logically been reverse engineered and made the standard for production throughout the inner sphere by 3070 at the very latest.Jade falcon outright purged their scientist caste, as did a couple other clans, those ones shouldn't have even been able to maintain their level of technology but it didn't inconvenience them in the slightest.
>>97033212I know what the lore is, it's just dumb. A warrior culture that lives in peace for 200 years... We have a RL historical example of that and they got their shit pushed in over night when the rest of the world turned their eyes on them.Pic rel
>>97033278That's a picture of natives killing each other.
>>97032717They do still have some degree of freedom for clusters to pick their own schemes, even if most stick to the galaxy's standard paint scheme. CJF Gamma galaxy for example has one cluster that replaces the jade green highlights with blue, and Wolves have one cluster that paints their mechs with tiger stripes (Wolves also often just use flat gray instead of the galaxy-specific scheme).I'm pretty sure there is mention of individual warriors being able to use custom paint schemes if they want to. That would presumably apply to Malthus, since his Summoner is red and gray while IIRC the rest of the Falcon's Talons (themselves a sub-unit within a cluster that uses a custom painy scheme) are mostly white with green highlights.

>>97031546"Red helps evil cartoon guy stand out from the scrubs" is just as likely the fluff reason as it is the real reason.
>>97033518Also, diagetically, it’s a Spheroid production — they could have made the same analysis as that within the setting ir it could just be an error
>>97033278They invade and kick the absolute piss out of several of their neighbors so bad that one of them reorients its entire culture around it?
>>97033267The IS was on its way to reverse-engineering clantech by the 3060s (NAIS could do it, but because they had to custom-manufacture every component the production volume was too small for anything except as proof of concept), but then the Jihad happened, setting everybody back due to so many factories getting nuked, which was then followed by the demilitarization during the Republic era, so they only really got back to it in 3130s. By 3150 all IS states (except maybe Capellans) can produce clantech, though some specific tech like XL engines remains very limited in availability (the only IS facility that can build them is the Hesperus megaplex). The only reason they don't go full clantech (aside from gameplay reasons of wanting to keep the two techbases around) is cost. IS mechs with a select clan components are much cheaper and easier to produce, while being almost as good (the Awesome with clan DHS and endo-steel but IS HPPCs is a good example: same damage output as if it was armed with cERPPCs with a minor loss of range, but much cheaper and easier to manufacture). The Clans focus on having a small number of elite warriors and don't have to give a fuck about things like allocation of taxpayer funds and having a set defense budget, so they can afford to trick out every mech with the most expensive toys, but the IS will rather wield regiments of mechs that are good enough to get the job done than 15 super-robots.
>>97033630You really don't know shit about the Meiji Restoration, do you?The entire Shogunate Bakuhan folded like a piece of paper and the mop up battles between the Western supported new government forces and the samurai remnants was so one sided that some referred to them as massacres and extrajudicial executions rather than actual battles. Yeah, late period Edo samurai looked the part but most of them were LARPers when it came down to brass tax.
>>97033634The Capellan's ability to manufacture clantech is there, but their relatively small industrial base limits it to a small pool of things (namely cERPPCs). So to circumvent that, they just buy a shitton from Clan Sea Fox.
>>97033693So the clans should've been backwards, fought the wars of reaving because of IS influence, and then afterwards caught up rapidly beyond most of their neighbors abilities and become a permanent fixture of power. And also they make anime and achieve a total cultural victory in the end.
>>97033634Going by base price, cost has always been a bullshit explanation because clantech is only like 10% more expensive than inner sphere equivalent. Technically, it should actually be cheaper to just use clantech, the savings in weight and space allowing you to create mechs of equivalent performance at lesser chassis weight(the overwhelming majority of the cost of a mech being its engine, a smaller mech means a smaller, cheaper engine). The clans being able to retool their entire industry(which one would also assume was never a large industrial base) in the overwhelmingly hostile planets they inhabited almost overnight and still maintaining enough production to fully equip their units with clantech also logically discounts any claim that clantech is difficult to produce. Not even going into how inefficient the horrifyingly mistreated and under equipped laborer caste, that is also quite small relative to inner sphere labor populations, should be when it comes to economics and industry. When examined closely, the in-universe excuses given or inferred to explain the lack of proliferation of clantech crumble like wet sand.
>>97033739Not what I was going for...In my mind, they should have patterned the Clans after the European low lands countries; The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. They clawed their way out from under the old ruling families of Europe, focused on economic and scientific development, and in turn was able to become a global military powers that way out performed their small size. They were a real threat to the old order of feudalism in the 16th and 17th century and won wars they should have lost on paper. As the lore goes, the internal friction and fighting that the Clans exhibit has been shown in real history as something that undermines otherwise powerful military capacity. Anywhere you have infighting coupled with an overenthusiastic deference to warriors over actual function governance you have a failed culture. The list of casualties to this would blow out the character limit for a post.
I wish FASA had gone with their original concept of a Clan star being composed of a single mechwarrior and 4 points of elementals, patterned after the concept of a knight and his squires. Not only would that have served to highlight the idea of the Clans being elite warriors obsessed with personal glory and single combat, it would also have avoided the issue where despite Clan mechs being far more expensive their smallest canon formation is actually bigger than the IS equivalent (star of 5 mechs vs lance of 4), so if you want to play games with lore-accurate unit sizes you either have to play a Clan star vs an IS company or a Clan light star vs an IS assault lance. If CGL is going to keep doing BT AUs like Gothic, I hope for the "anime AU" they've mentioned they'd really lean on the "real robot vs super robot" genres. Keep IS mechs as they are in terms of equipment and lore: mass-produced relatively down to earth war machines, but go full super robot for the Clans: every Clan mech is a wholly unique custom job tailored specifically to the combat style of its pilot, equipped with sci-fi supertech like plasma swords and disintegration fields, but Clanners, being the honor-obsessed autists they are, insist on fighting alone which offsets their superior technology because even the best pilot with the most decked out super-mech still loses to an unlucky head-crit or engine explosion.
>>97033874It's impressive how much shit opinion you managed to pack into a single post.

>Aces box 2, Snowblind, will be set in the Rasalhague Dominion. >You will be tasked with securing a mech factory during the Dominion Civil War.>The OpFor will be both CGB and the Pirate>Will include the Rime Otter and the Viking IICfuck
I don’t know why but it does still surprise me how many of you hang out here to demonstrate how your erm ahem haha pushes up glasses *superior* knowledge about military and political history demonstrates the utter absurdity of BattleTech.
>>97033906I love Battletech. I don't really care for the lore that much though as so much of it is really bad writing. Usually, I can just ignore it and move on but when it really glares I say shit about it.What can I say? I guess it's just a little of my autism poking through.
>>97033916>I don't really care for the lore that much though as so much of it is really bad writing.Same, the biggest game issue I have is Starter Clantech being out and out superior.
>>97033874I see how you’re trying to highlight the idea of chivalric prowess but does a single ‘Mech supported by Elementals really accomplish that any better than five ‘Mechs issuing individualistic challenges? On the anime entry for the Continuum series: things could change but it doesn’t seem aimed in the direction you want based on the Timber Wolf concept art they showed.
>>97033916>the autismI appreciate your self-awareness on this point. Nourish that beginning and you’ll eventually be able to enjoy BattleTech’s setting as more than an autism scratching post.
>>97033874I wish they'd make the mechs standard scale rather than oversized.
>>97033962I just want BT to be a cool game about fighting giant robots and leave it at that. This guy gets it. >>97033929Do you really think that a culture that's wiped out their brain trust and focused on on-on-one fighting for 200 years is going to come back more technologically developed and with enough unit cohesiveness to actually out do the IS? The more they develop the Clan lore the dumber it gets.
>>97033973I think an un- or understated facet of the Continuum boxes is to try new things with the miniatures. With Gothic, the larger sizes have something to do with the desired granularity of the detail running up against it ‘resolution,’ so to say, as well as customizable parts.I would bet the Rockets & Rayguns box has some bigger ‘Mechs than their mainline counterparts for similar reasons.
>>97034003Yeah, people try to use the narrative excuse that "Technology advances," but gamist wise that's just introducing power creep!
>>97033903If they're anything in AS like they are in Classic, the players are going to be in for a rude awakening. I've had more than a few opponents get frustrated by the hardened armor, try to close distance, then get absolutely slammed.
>>97033943I feel it would highlight it at least a little more, since even if each mech in the star issues individual challenges it's still a military unit that follows the lead of the star commander, instead of each mech being a lone warrior out for personal glory accompanied only be his non-mech retainers. Plus, as mentioned, it would make games with canon-accurate formation sizes easier to pull off, as instead of having to either have a very light star fight a very heavy lance or triple the amount of mechs on the IS side, you could have a single Timber Wolf and 4 elemental points face an average-weight IS lance of equivalent BV.
>>97034003I think the Clan Invasion being an initial success decelerating into a failure and reversal is both credible and compelling.
>>97034050Sure, but that doesn't erase the flaws that should have kneecapped the Clans from the very beginning.
>>97034050Meh, feel how you want to feel.A little history on conquerors and how they won and ultimately lost would inform a very different opinion. Combine that with my actual military experience and I can say that wars are won with cooperation and logistics; two things failed at right out of the gate.with the Clans. They wouldn't have even gotten started, let alone taken enough ground to even be a footnote in IS politics and warfare. This>>97034079
>>97034035The Star makes a lot of sense for chivalric larping because operating so muscularly means there are immediately practical as well as honorific consequences to violating Zellbrigen; namely, grand melee.
Looking for advice on a scenario I'm participating in next month where the CCAF (us) is trying to capture a former RotS fortress in 3152. My job is breaching the fortress gate and being a secondary assault force; I got permission to use artillery provided it's on-board. So far I've got a Catapult C5 and two Po II (Arrow IV)s as survivable artillery pieces and a Rifleman 7N2 to deal with enemy Aero/VTOL/WiGE assets. I'm thinking I need a speedy jumper with pulse lasers and TAG to act as a spotter and deal with flankers as well as a beefy frontline mech to act as a bodyguard. Are there any general threats to fire support formations that I'm missing?
>>97034111In the high middle ages, the mounted knight with lance was used in a wedge formation to break enemy lines. I see no reason why a neofeudal warrior caste would not use formations.
Would an Atlas, Awesome, Zeus, and Highlander make a sensible 3025-era assault lance? Not huge into the lore but learning, and these guys look cool together in mini form.
>>97034084Yeah, probably the biggest issue is that the Clans really don't have a reason for why they treat their civilian caste so shitty, it's just narrative trick to make their society look tough when they'd realistically end up like any other Periphery pirate state.
>>97034179Lance fournie is an actual medieval formation to describe what a knight brings to the table.
>>97034084The problem is that BT isn't actually some gritty, realistic military scifi. It's a pulpy space opera, your 'actual military experience' is entirely inapplicable.
>>97034179It’s the post-SW IS that is neofeudal, (which is really just code for regressive, eroded, fallen). The Clans’ highly formal honor culture does not make them feudal in this broadly prejudicial sense nor in any technical sense. There’s really nothing medieval about them (even in terms of the metaphors they reached for themselves; again, unlike the IS).
>>97034267>your 'actual military experience' is entirely inapplicable. How?
>>97034084>A little history of>my actual military experienceYou’ve just looped through the flowchart back to this post >>97033906
>>97034282because if you apply "actual military experience" logic to the world of BT, you wouldn't have mechs in the first place, since the idea of a mech, realistically, is fucking terrible as a war machine. So by that virtue alone, any actual experience is irrelevant in BT.Also, your "actual military experience" is probably just from some tactical/field level bs position rather than a strategic one.
>>97034310>you wouldn't have mechs in the first place, since the idea of a mech, realistically, is fucking terrible as a war machineSomebody post the "Fighter Jet is an unrealistic war machine" meme.

>>97034267>It's a pulpy space operaAnd fails to be good at even that. I've read enough of EE "Doc" Smith, Robert A. Heinlein, and Andre Norton to know what good space opera can be. Handwavium for narrative is ok if the narrative is good. It isn't.What makes BT work is that the rules are internally consistent while giving a lot of flexibility. Also, it's got cool mech and tank designs. I get to play with my little metal and plastic robots.>>97034310>Also, your "actual military experience" is probably just from some tactical/field level bs position rather than a strategic one.As an NCO, I needed to understand enough of the strategic importance of my unit and the other units we cooperated with so that I could make good decisions at my level when I could see gaps between expected and actual outcomes. I didn't make strategic decisions but I did make tactical decision that impacted the strategic outcome. >>97034333>This is invisible to them; for them, the fictional setting is just one of those fairground bell ringing games — it exists to be smashed with their profound insights into Real True FactsYet I keep being told how "realistic" BT is...

>>97034205It would bring the pain, yes. Very expensive, and it would be better with at least one fast moving jumper to react to flank attempts. Even big ass assaults can get pantsed if they can't keep their rear arc clear.
>>97033903The Rime Otter is such a "why the fuck does this exist" mech. Its a fat Shadow Cat and none of its loadouts are particularly impressive or justify it. The name sucks too. If they tossed the Kontio in there instead that set would stay out of stock much as I dread seeing that show up in every new players mercs.
>>97034359>As an NCO>NCOYup, opinion rejected.
>>97034224>the Clans really don't have a reason for why they treat their civilian caste so shittyDon’t limit “reason” to mean “consciously, dispassionately chosen to efficiently produce a rational goal.”Reasons, especially historical reasons, are often grounded in human experiences that are irrational in themselves. In this case, a potential reason the Clans treat non-Warriors so poorly, on the whole, is the painful experience of demobilizing against their will so many military personnel during the settlement of the Pentagon Worlds; kicking out all of those people who had pledged to come along in the first place not only as a matter of being military, and damn proud of it, but also in the context of serving in a history-making military operation where being military meant having higher status (in all sorts of ways). And the tensions resulting from the forced demobilization of course played a large role in forcing the Second Exodus, where the same painful process had to be immediately initiated again in the Kerensky Cluster. Nicholas’s attitudes, along with the attitudes if everyone who got to retain their privileged military status, to the lower castes were the result of all this.
>>97034377>That's fair, but people coming in and bitching about logistics and realistic military strategy are missing the point entirely. To make an IP all about warfare and not even give a passing nod to what works and what doesn't... >>97034436Really exciting — these must be in support of Snowblind, right? Was there no time to do something similar for Scouring Sands?
>>97034505Games have to be realistic. Battletech is a game. Therefore Battletech must be realistic. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
Battletech is one of the more grounded and realistic of the popular science fiction settings when the main alternatives are things like star wars, 40k, star trek, gundam, etc."Realistic setting" is an extremely vague term and is very dependent on subjective personal opinion. Some don't consider hard sci-fi realistic because it's fiction. One could be strict enough that they don't consider anything except a 1-1 100% accurate depiction of real life as we live in it right now a "realistic setting".Another issue is that real life is itself full of "unrealistic" events. Most people wouldn't consider alexander's campaigns believable in the slightest, the first world war being waged with such comically ineffective tactics by so many completely inept commanders is ridiculous, the wars that china regularly saw that rival the world wars in death counts make warhammer fantasy's over the top grimdarkness seem tame and reasonable.
>>97034460As far as playing the game you need to think about roles. 4 fat dudes waddling around with a mix of range bands and weapon types is going to get wore out by faster, more numerous units that can dictate the engagement range to suit their weapons loadout. Your assault lance of 4 fat dudes would work better on a company or larger level to anchor a firing line with faster lances in support. For a lance I go with:Fast Guy to flank enemy, can also counterflank if enemy has multiple fast penetratorsMidfield Brick to stand between enemy line and my rear units slugging it outLong-Range Dude to stand on hill to the rear and rain the pain on the enemyFighty Guy with enough mobility to bodyguard the Midfield Brick and Longrange Dude depending on how the situation develops.Fast Guy should be at least 6/9/6Midfield Brick can be a 4/6Fighty Guy should be at least a 4/6/4 if not a 5/8/5Long-Range Dude can be a 2/3 but he needs to haul ass to high ground immediately to get his weapons firing ASAP.Your Awesome is your Long-Range DudeYour Atlas is a very slow Midfield BrickYour Zeus is a not very good Fighty Guy who should be sticking closer to your AwesomeAnd your Cyclops could be dropped for a Fast Guy, who would more usefully be a fast, jumping medium (the Phoenix Hawk is very typical for this.)
>>97034676kek
>>97034676D&D is more realistic than Battletech, and so is 40k. Nothing about Battletech ever has been or ever will be realistic. That's why it's the worst giant robot game on the market, except for all the others.
>>97034676Anon, you've made one of the classic mistakes of /tg/. You haven't gotten involved in a land war in Asia, and you haven't started a thread with an image more interesting than the post, but you HAVE made a reasonable and nuanced post about a topic that people are emotionally invested in. You seem to think that by making a rational argument people will change their opinions or consider an alternative viewpoint to the one they have already come here with. That is not what these threads are for, and that sort of behavior is not welcome here. A friendly suggestion, if you want to keep posting here, change the way you post. Make absolutely sure you remove all possible nuance from anything you say, because everything you say can and will be deliberately misinterpreted by bad faith actors in the least charitable possible manner. And nothing will ever change this immutable fact.

>>97034752This should be pinned to the top of the board. What a phenomenal distillation of why this place has gone to shit. God I wish there was literally anywhere else to talk about Battletech that isn't either Facebook, wholly owned and moderated by CGL, or both.

>>97029712I remember seeing a bit of hilariously bad fluff floating around here about people in post Xin-Sheng Capellan Confederation getting plastic surgery to look more Chinese. Was this real fluff material? If so, where was it from?
>>97034867Gary Gygax? Aren't you supposed to be dead?
>>97034889i've seen maybe 1 or 2. While back there was a girl attending a campaign for a couple of weeks before the group disappeared.
>>97034920I think it's mentioned in the "Inner Sphere: a Battletech Sourcebook" book, which basically covers the current state of the IS by 3062. IIRC the same section had a Chinese Capellan officials tell another one who was trying to arrange support for people on Tikonov suffering from a natural disaster "why do you care about some round-eyes? They're not TRUE Capellans like us".
>>97034969I knew a girl that liked to paint mechs and she loved coming to game night to show them off but she never actually played. HEr BF did play. That was the closest I ever saw.
>>97034920It is real. IIRC it's from a novel in the late-3050's. Somebody else will have to dig it up. I did a quick search of the 3060's Capellan Handbook, and they didn't include it in there.

>>97035103>I'm guessing it was a Loren Coleman novel? All the Cap ones pretty much are.
>>97035091Battletech has always had multiple people working on it. Some of them understand that the Inner Sphere is the descendants of Earth cultures, and not literally those cultures, and that each planet is a unique part of the feudal structures, which albeit may include noble houses that have an attachment to their idealized ancestry. And some of the writers can't think abstractly so scratch their heads and just go back to "What if Scots in space again" or "Reading this original Capellan Confederation House Book makes my head hurt, can we just make them Space Chinese?"It's a good way to distinguish the clear hacks at least. But its a dichotomy that has existed along with the setting as long as it's existed, to this day.
>>97035259The Caps deliberately did the Han-best crap though. Mostly, it's Sunny. Inner Sphere has a little bit on it.The funny thing is this is exactly what Teddy did in the 3030's for the Dracs and why you start to see Japanese-named mechs then and them beginning to get away from Star League English standards. Xin Sheng remains the Caps just cribbing from the Dracs with a green coat of paint.
I'm trying to flesh out a scenario to play over the weekend, and I could use some inspiration. The main two ideas will be that it will be a location capture kind of objective, and the only unit type that will be able to hold a location will be infantry.Trying to avoid a city fight because the rules for infantry in buildings is just a massive hassle to have to constantly look up.Not sure how to justify large amounts of infantry in non built up areas though
>>97035333The sad part is, out of all the 3015 Succ States as we're introduced to them, the Cappies seem to need this the least. They have the best developed independent idea of what a "Capellan" is beyond race, thanks to their unique philosophies and political structure. You can crack open the OG Cappie House Book today and perfectly understand them without needing "Space China" as a crutch. The Japanese angle of the Dracs is arguably much more needed - at least, the bushido honor stuff and much of their culture. But even then, that's culture.tl;dr, Battletech was dodging being racist until Loren Coleman broke that harder than he broke Catalyst's finances.
>>97035355Have them try to take an old SLDF facility like a cache or Castle Brian. You need infantry to open shit up and occupy it or man the defenses. They're also known for being hidden in the middle of nowhere. It's also worth killing the ever-loving fuck out of people for, so a good objective. This way you only need a small handful of "Hardened Structures."
>>97035383You still see some of the old stuff like the blue-eyed blackamoor Elsie merchant in the DA who gets sent to deal with the Falcons. He's all like "Yes, my proud Portuguese history with vineyards reminds me of my Roman heritage." and stuff. It's pretty classic. That was a pretty good book. Pretty crazy, though. It's the same one where a bunch of sibbies beat a kid to death during a soccer match on Christmas Day.
>>97035333This is why I don't like the CapCon. 3025 CapCon was cool but everything after that sucked. Getting raped in the 4th war followed by Xin Sheng and Sun Tzu constantly winning ruined the faction.
>>97035393Thank you, thats a great idea! Are SLDF caches still relevant for mercs in the late 3050s, early 60s? I would ideally like them to have access to BA as well.
>>97035091>Nobody REALLY wants to imagine a scifi future civilization beyond our own.Correct. Sci-fi is inherently political. Therefore it will always be a reflection of <current year> politics and nothing you or anyone else can do will ever change that. And none of this makes the sci-fi any less enjoyable or valid to anyone who isn't irredeemably brainrotted by their own personal political narcissism. Now make up your mind to go or stay, because as of the announcement at PAX today, Tetatae are coming to game table near you.
>>97033874That's actually more or less the plot of Aldnoah.
Are UnitColorCompendium and CamoSpecs accurate for paint schemes? Or is there a bunch of fan made stuff that's passed off as official?
>>97035507UCC is all fan stuff, Camospecs is canon. But the interpretations they have painted are the lowest form of canon, with the sources they list being more canon. So when the written source says "blue and white", then any blue and any white is accurate to canon, not just the specific blue and white tones that Camospecs happens to use.
>>97035507CamoSpecs is official. UnitColorCompendium is not but as far as I know they largely just copy CamoSpecs onto MWO artwork but their specific shades can be off.
Crusader Jayden is the most fulfilling ending. Even if it leads to his and cobalt star total destruction.
>>97035450They are relevant even into the DA.
>>97035545Liam will be revealed to have survived and leading a 2nd star leauge lance.

>>97035639>why the Taurian Concordat is meme'd as Space TexasBecause IRL anti-government wackos see the "go away and leave me alone" attitude of the TC and project it out so that the TC is equivalent to the biggest IRL home of anti-government wackos. Which, of course, is Texas. Also, the Tex videos on YouTube REALLY don't help. The irony, of course, is that the TC is actually pretty much democratic socialism with a strong social safety net mixed with fierce isolationism. If anything, they're Space Finland, through a Texmex lens. But the anti-government wackos never seem to talk about the strong government sponsored education and social programs the Taurians have. Just the "fuck you I'll nuke myself if it gets rid of you" attitude since that's what matches up with their cancerous IRL political belief system.
>>97035690Canopus clit-suckers you mean. It got memed to degeneracy way worse than clanners.

>>97035667>>97035702>>97035731Incredible that people just...completely skip over the Concordat has no right to bear arms in its founding document. Like even beyond the socialist policies, that has the Concordat lacking one of the most iconic things about Texas.
>>97035798It's starting to get meme'd (although I hope Reddit never finds it), but Fronc really is closer to space cowboys than any other faction. They have the lone marshal fighting bandits imagery, they have the "everyone has a gun and will use it" style militias, they are on the frontier. They even have an actual democracy of sorts. But even they aren't the "fuck you, I hate the government" types, just the cowboy stuff. Their government is pretty strong, and the Colonial Marshals are FBI coded enough that they would 100% Waco anyone dumb enough to try and start an anti-government commune on one of their worlds.

>>97035909I mean, I started looking in on them because their stuff actually seemed pretty neat, when someone like fucking Sharplen isn't in charge at least. That's why I started getting confused by all the Texas memes when I started looking around even more.Same thing with the related mention of the Reunification wars being treated akin to the American Civil War? That is a take I am utterly baffled by as well, as I am struggling in regards to see parallels there, as the Star League...didn't ever control the periphery before their invasion? And they aren't even a successor state to someone who did?
>>97035976It's the Fedcom Civil War that always gets compared to the US CW, but that's retarded for its own reasons.
>>97035494The Martians in Aldnoah are even organized into clans (though they're more like noble houses instead of BT Clans). And they're obsessed with personal honor and claiming Terra from the regular humans who they consider inferior. The big difference really comes down to their tech being based on ancient alien bullshit so they're far more advanced than Terrans (whose mechs are basically the equivalent of light shitmechs), and they don't have any of the restrictions about avoiding collateral damage that most of the Clans tend to follow, and are perfectly willing to just bombard shit from the orbit. Still the same kind of arrogant asshats that repeatedly underestimate their enemies and mistake having better tech and training with being invincible, though.

My son really wants to do a tabletop wargame, is battleyech alpha strike easier for a 9 year old to learn than 40k?
>>97036756Alpha Strike is about as difficult and nuanced as Kimble.
Do mechs with multiple AMS have a purpose again?
>>97036756It should be, yeah. Also exponentially cheaper, the box you need to start playing any form of Battletech is like a sixth of one army for 40k.

>>97036748A big box would probably be confusing for consumers unless it was another whole set with a rule book and maps and everything. Maybe if they made it the Gothic equivalent to the Beginner Box or Essentials, but then they wouldn't put that many models in it.

Anyone else have a fucking stroke on mech loadouts? I was playing around with force building the other day for an Ilclan era mercs and was like "Yeah I'll take a Hammerhead for the rookies; AC10 is a workhorse in close".I painted the RT gun as an AC, I remembered it as an AC, but lo and behold it's an LPL. Easy fix with some white ink and florescent paint, but I don't know why I ever thought it was that to begin with; as something for the wet-behind the ears rookies to pilot the LPL and Streaks make up for iffy gunnery skill. Also; does anyone paint Streaks differently than normal SRMS? I tend to follow a simplified coloring scheme to keep things easy (Lasers are florescent red-orange, pulses are purple, PPCs are blue, LRMs are white and SRMs are yellow) but I wouldn't mind some ideas. I could try and go back in to give them red caps over the yellow or something, but these bays are fucking tiny.

I've been getting into the jihad era as the local old dudes have finally decided to move from classic and the fedcom civil war to alpha strike campaign and the jihad. >>97037987The cybernetics aren't super impactful on the tabletop, the main use for them is just offsetting the downsides of a small cockpit in their fanciest omnimechs. Most of the WoB are not cyborgs at all. Their main feature is getting to use the highest tech IS stuff around, like C3i networks.
>>97038044You need two hand actuators for handhelds, melee weapons can be built directly onto a chassis
>>97038073>>97038044You need a hand for physical weapons per the construction rules, but some art/models don't represent them.
>>97038159It's a silly requirement anyway when the melee weapon is welded on. Maybe the "hand actuator" actually represents a wrist-like articulation, but it still mechanically comes with the ability to pick stuff up. And then we roll into the old problem of what the macross style "actually holding a gun that's permanently attached to the robot" type hands do when they go to pick stuff up.

>>97038174Nominally it should always look something like this at its most basic.
>>97038678As someone who used to make stuff from scratch and work with IWM, you better really want what you make. It's the only way you can justify the time investment.
>>97038690Hand actuator at its most primitive is a wrist joint.
>>97038694A hand actuator always has the function of grabbing things, so it logically cannot only be a wrist, it must also be an actual manipulator of some kind.
>>97038700This is true rule-wise, but not art and universe-wise. The wrist joint is.
>>97038707>This is true rule-wiseYes, and that means the rule should be changed or the art should be updated.

>>97038802I prefer physical books, but yeah so far I've been using .pdfsI hope they have a good spine art work for the new booksLove me some little trinkets
>>97038801Meh. Catalyst is always putting out new products. One of the core principles of the game is that in 40 years the core rules haven't changed noticeably. The devs are currently floating some moderately major changes, but they'll all be errata-able. There are too many grogs among the playerbase for them to piss them all off by making old books obsolete, especially since their new business model appears to be minis.
>>97034920In addition to these other mentions it pops up in the novel By Temptation And By War.

When Outreach II became the dominant hiring hall world, the slumland Temptown came to be because of failing mercenary groups that came to languish there. Prior to all of that, did Galatea VI (and even after the Jihad ended Outreach as the Mercenary's Star) have a slumland where down-on-their-luck mercenary groups toiled?
Are there Inferno LRMs?
>>97039040Nope! SRMs and Arrow IVs only.
I still don't get how mercenaries get the contracts. They all post an ad in Galatea and hope someone will call them via HPG?
>>97037612Anybody recognize the color scheme on the Rifleman, Panther and possibly Locust there?
>>97039070Pretty sure that's from the pov of Phelan which means it should be the Kell Hound color scheme but since it looks so different I'm assuming the mechs were repainted to blend in with the environment.
>>97037567Say what you will about trannies, but he'd actually pass as a woman pretty well if he had a normal hair color. Not an attractive woman, mind you, but the casual observer would just see a dowdy middle aged matron with nothing amiss.

>>97039763>>97039742What's really funny is I know a lot of people freak out over Rem, but if you're even tangentially related to anything Catalyst, you know she's basically the only one who does any real work there as far as making Battletech events happen - the rest of the team are terminally work-shy and disorganized.

A pure fan produced thing will usually end up getting bogged down by making everything perfect and feature creep while often having trouble actually getting it made if its a physical project. A pure professional produced thing will be shallow both because it appeals to the lowest common denominator and because it only has the bare minimum effort put into it.

>>97040887For anyone who isn't a corporate bootlicker, all of that has already been on the table for years.
>>97040887I already have a Viking and something like four hunchbacks, so we'll probably just shoot them with guns.

What the hell is going on
Hey guys, does anyone have that one image of a mech pilot in a cockpit with all sorts of red overheating alarms going off, they're sweating, and there's text below saying something like "I see! You deny your reactor its true purpose!". Very clear riff on Metal Gear Rising's Sam. I looked for it on the booru but didn't find it...
>>97040970It's time for the marian's to get a new crest so they don't look like cringey pirates anymore.
>>97040960Now I need a locust with a blown off canopy so I can paint a mini whatever her name was from the GDL novels.
>>97040912Boomer minis. You shouldn't play with people who use metal. They are the sort of grogs we don't need to be encouraging. If you are a real gamer you can play with plastic or a 3D print.
>>97041147>If you are a real gamer you can play with paper standeesFixed
>>97041152>If you are a real gamer you can play with cheetosFixed.

Do you ever play in other settings?
>>97041397If Gothic counts, then yes.
>>97041397I've played in two Lancer campaigns abd GMed one, done various historical stuff for wargames including a medieval one I'm jumping in on, and I've done some modern fantasy type things.
>>97041413Oh shit I memoryholed Gothic already. Nobody play in their own BT settings?
>>97041466someone posted pics of their own homebrew with sea monsters at a LGS. coolest one was a hermit crab using a dropship as a shell. wish I saved the pictures...
Just how hard to hit are VTOL BA?
>>97041206I like how heavy your mum is.
>>97041480That was NEAs home game, because of course it was.
>>97041397Heavy Gear is my second favorite setting.Done plenty of 40k with my mains being Necron and Tau. Didn't get into it recently but I know they got the Imperial Knights as a faction.Did a few MekTon games back in the day.
