Speaking of basing, I have a Shadowstalker warband and idk how to base them if I plan on making them grey & gold. I don't want to remove them from their base and make like a tiled floor because they're flimsy and I'm paranoid

I've already done urban and winter on my main two 40k armies

chamon isn't a bad idea, was going to paint my rats up like an offbrand clan ferrik so it'd fit

unless I'm mistaken by the top of the units, neither seem like particularly shooting heavy lists. I would have thought chorf artillery would force a charge from LRL but I guess not? Aside from annointed sentinals, which I don't think is what those bulls are, do HoH have any good anticharge? It feels like the LRL player has some incentive to set up a charge, especially with two sharks.

I like their default color scheme, but to each their own. If your going grey gold, doing a white marble with gold flecks seems like the obvious choice.

If you glued them to the base, you can chuck em in the freezer and use a hobby knife to cut through the bottoms.

Convince me not to impulse buy the Sylvaneth spearhead
The fall leaves were in full swing until recently and the kurnothi hunters look cool so I want to see what they’re like to paint seasonally.

>Convince me not to impulse buy the Sylvaneth spearhead
The longer you wait the cheaper you will able to buy it for. That is the worst box out of any box this year for any system.
>>
>>97030929

>>

eh, 1 wound but they can defensively spike if they have DPP giving them the 5+ ward. it's just enough to make a cautious player hesitate
>>
>>97031210
Honestly each time I see them in a battle report they all die as soon as they are charged and that redditor who went to a GT with HoH said the same thing.
>>
>>97031176
I think you mean the battleforce
Yes that box is mostly dryads and revs (the revs are okay) but I’m not spending that much for mostly chaff and 2 heroes.

Everyone says the spearhead is one of the best ones ever made akin to the GSC and grey knights old combat patrols

It would mostly be to paint and then expand upon if sylvaneth ever gets druids or shapeshifters like we see in dark water
>>
>>97031255
>Everyone says the spearhead is one of the best ones ever made akin to the GSC and grey knights old combat patrols
Its not that good but it is neat. Id argue that the spearhead equivalents of that are the old maggotkin one, maybe vampires old one, and the gitmob one. That being said its fine if you're looking to just play spearhead.
Playing the army fully has been kinda awkward historically, and you need like 3 boxes of the terrain.

I haven't seen a good fall themed sylvaneth army yet, they're all pretty low effort yellow and orange leaves mostly. I do wish some weeb would have the balls to make cherry blossom themed set. I think it could look really good, especially the spirits if painted with a whitepink gradient
>>
>>97031163
You can buy most of this from stormbringer if you're in the US, 12 dollars a kit (24 for the treelord) and kurnothi hunters seperate for less than you'd spend on the spearhead.

>>
>>97031948
All the post-Silver tower units. So Gors, kairics, mini demons.
Fatemaster or whatever that armored guy on the disc was called is on borrowed time
>>
>>97031843
Orange and black are a fantastic color combo
>>
>>97031897
>exceed the scale of mega-gargants
that would be cool but I highly doubt GW would be willing (or capable) of balancing something that massive in a chaff-heavy army.

>ogor warhulk

>>97031970
>>97031924
I'm American so every time I see orange and black I immediately think of Halloween decorations and Jack-o-lanterns. Even small businesses and especially grocery stores love to put up decorations and erect displays. Brands will change their packaging and beverage bottles/cans to look Halloween-y. It's everywhere for those 6-7 weeks of the year.
I'm not saying the colors look bad together, but their permanent association with Halloween in my mind has kind of ruined it for me. Being from los angeles I also can't look at purple and yellow without thinking of the Lakers basketball team. Kind of like how people see light blue, white, and pink and think of transgenders now.
>>

pretty much just the demons are something to be wary about unless 40k lays claim on tzaangors.

I don't think people are ready for how incredible the Tzeentch and especially Khorne refreshes are going to be.
>new bloodletters
>new bloodreavers
>new blood warriors
>new wrathmonger double kit
>possibly new skullcrusher/bloodcrusher double kit
>BIG dick ascended Khul
>maybe new Standalone skarbrand or multi-build bloodthirster
Khorne had their big moment a decade ago and their due for a wave refresh.

People shit on tzaangors and pink horrors a lot (undeservedly IMO) but they will get a nice glow-up.
>new gors
>idk about kairic acolytes since they seem fine
>new flamers, seekers, and horrors
>new magister on foot or foot mortal wizard (possibly an ascended Kairic acolyte)
>possibly new chaos warrior equivalent similar to curseling with mutations and feathered armor
>new chariot and blue scribes (or any of the old finecast kits, really)

If the upcoming nurgle wave is a sign of things to come, they're really going to knock it out of the park with Khorne and tzeentch. It seems they're striving for symmetry with each chaos god (mortal chaff, chaos warrior equivalent, chosen equivalent, cavalry).

Also I've liked kairic acolytes since I first saw them but I never had a reason or chance to get them cheap. I recently found a listing for 10 at about 25 USD so I'm happy to finally get some.

>>
>>97032150
We weren't talking about seeing pink trees in real life, we were talking about the frequency that you see sakura armies as the original anon had stated he'd seen none. He probably finds it interesting because he hasn't seen many, most of us in the hobby have seen it enough times at this point that it's no longer as interesting as another colour might be. It's no different than stonecast eternals, painting non ghosts as ghosts, or other popular paint schemes. It's not bad because it's popular, it's just not an exciting thing for most of us.
>>
How do fluffy darkoath forces actually play on the table? I don't mean StD with darkoath to screen or hold obj. I mean a dedicated thematic darkoath army.

I heard their spearhead is squishy and not very hard hitting. Even if they are not strong in their own battle formation, do the at least have fun or engaging rules? I would be tempted to collect them if they didn't look so AIDS to paint and transport. They're cool in concept, but painting 40-50 chaff with lots of detail and random tchotchke's all over them that die in 1 combat phase sounds like hell. They're also expensive on top of that, unfortunately.
I salute that one anon that painted the KISS themed darkoath.
>>
>>97032074
>If the upcoming nurgle wave is a sign of things to come
it's not, tzeentch will stay the worst range in the game for more years and khorne will lose more than it updates

It's not a flavour of the month.
There will be a Plateau as some people will transition in if it trends then out again, but I think due to what mini wargaming is, it will be a small group and the core will be those who just like the hobby and stick around
>>
>>97032210
You know to be absolutely honest I'm kinda surprised it's still relevant enough to grow every year. I don't think wargaming and painting miniatures is that appealing to zoomies and alphas and I feel like there should be less and less boomers and millenials in the hobby as time goes on.

Rough paint job for this skull crusher’s rider. I did the mount weeks ago and these guys are tedious but that’s khorne for you.

Just did the rider and I think it looks good enough. All the tiny cracks and folds and crevices of the armor make washes go a long way. I think the spear head looks a bit odd so I may add some more wash or panel liner to the engravings. Either way I got 1 more of these fuckers and 7 blood reavers up next. Fielding a mortal heavy khorne force must be awful to paint.

I think it would have been neat if Syar venerated Grungni or one/all of the Six Smiths. They're the designated artisan nation and have the peculiar trait (for knife-ears) of not being arrogant to the point where they can't recognize game. Their best stuff tends to look unassuming. Open arrogance and ostentatious displays are used as misdirection, because the Syar knows that is what people expect to see. Their relative humility could be an angle for making them recognize the good works of non-aelf gods.

I think as a standalone product Underworlds was good, you got some weird alternative hero or infantry sculpts and it was a neat little game. I feel like it got too mixed up since it was usable in warcry and AOS and GW tried to capitalize on it and then tried to separate the two. It feels like the child caught up in a perpetual pair of divorcing parents.

2nd edition coming in after having left the game to rot for a bit and just converting the warbands that would have come out into "new warbands", removing all the card art, fucking with the rules and making it even more restrictive just bugs me.

You can handle army mixing narratively without the solution being:
>And then Krethusa grovels on the floor and licks Morathi's toes, "I'm so sorry my Queen, Krethusa whimpers, I'll do anything to show you how sorry I am...anything"
It just completely destroys her character up to this point and makes her entire storyline a waste of time.

Thats because they had to scrap the alarielle broken realms book that would have set up the reappearance of morghur.
3rd edition would've launched with morghur and refreshed beastman + gavespawn units probably something similar to the warped gors that are described in the TOW beastman book.
My theory is that kragnos is either a bandaid character or was supposed to launch later, same goes for kruleboyz.

I don't understand how spearhead even took off. I'm in this shit for the armybuilding.
>>
>>97034414
Sorry if this truthbombs anyone but

I don't actually think AoS ever managed to establish itself as an "army first" game and I don't think "how a proper AoS army looks on the table" ever lodged in peoples' minds to the extent that it did in 40K (infantry blobs, monsters, tanks) or Fantasy (blocks of shit, monsters).

And I think something Spearhead-sized is probably the ideal product for GW. It claws in more profit than someone buying their first box or two, and it promises a complete game experience from one purchase.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them move harder and harder in that direction. I doubt they'd have the balls to ever fully deprecate the full army version, but they might Apocalypsize it...
>>
>>97034404
Spearhead specifically.
They are too greedy to give it free seasonal packs to keep people invested
>>97034414
The goal was to give people into AoS without needing to invest into 2k army right off the bat.
The problem is that list building in 4th ed is too basic and by the numbers
>>
>>97034450
It would be funny if they start bumping up point costs for units in future editions so hard, what was normal in 2-3 ed feels like an 40k style apocalypse in 6-7 ed

>>
>>97034268
No I don't know how to sculpt that stuff. Please demonstrate, you seem to have greater experience.
>>
>>97034450
My hangup is less about "the idea of how an army should look" and more that I just have very specific likes in terms of models and I refuse to ever buy or use something that I don't like. Like, unless they plop out a Spearhead that's specifically Arch-Warlock, Globadiers, Stormfiends, and some Weapon Team, I'm not buying it.

I wonder if they would ever do an a la carte system where you got, like, an A, B, C and D pick from lists of units, and together they formed a Spearhead.

Obviously that provokes the question, "How da fuck is that even different from the normal game, and points?" but I suppose the core goal would be to keep things Spearhead sized and to promote quicker games.

The current tzaangor are fine, no real issues there. Kairics suck ass, they're so boring. They could make really thematic tzeentch cultists like pic related that would be so much better. New flamers and pinks horrors would be appreciated. So why are CoS and OBR getting second waves and LRL are getting a fucking third wave when IDK got shit? Fyreslayers K get but DoK are also apparently getting some units even though they might get squatted and souped soon.

What's up with the Idoneth Deepkin neglect? They are middle of the pack in terms of general popularity and pretty popular in the tournament scene. So why do they refuse to give them more non pity hero units?

Having ugly battleline units hinders a factions popularity. No one's picking up IDK to run a horde of namarti, they want to play with fish elves riding sea animals. All they have to do is add Akhelian infantry as an option and and maybe one other cavalry unit and the faction would see a big rise in sales.

Idoneth aren't really middle of the pack, they're definitely towards the bottom sadly. One of those armies where most people like or at least appreciate the lore and concept but not a lot of people buy into the army itself. Kinda like tomb kings in that way. I've heard some rumours that they were one of the aos creators' pet projects (alan merett maybe?) and once they left they didn't get much attention anymore, but I've never seen that idea backed up by anything tangible. I love them though and it was clear the community was dissappointed with their "second wave", though if some meaty updates would actually fix them remains to be seen. They're willing to take a chance on fyreslayers though so who knows, as long as you're not beastmen there's hope.

First battletome had less units and kits than HoH. This is also shortly after OBR launched all in one weekend, too. They also have been quoted as having designed a lot of kits for the faction during the Lumineth Lowdown articles.
>>
>>97035023
Don't they both launch with 9 kits, per this pic? Loomies have 10 if you count the spell kit. Though obviously helsmiths have made more of their kits by virtue of basically everything being a dual build one.
>>

Urak/Daemonsmith

Despot

Hobgrotz

My bad, think I was counting one of those dual kits as a separate. Technically the same not counting spells, but the dual kits REALLY help HoH. But even then, having the other half of the LRL stuff drop the following year in the same edition during a narrative campaign can only mean the molds/sculpts were already done and just needing to be produced. Whether or not Covid affected production or this was an intentional split by GW will remain a mystery unless someone with knowledge of printing companies can chime in on timelines.

Yeah it's nice that everything bar the despot and hobgrots have an alternate build, fleshes out the faction a lot. It really surprised me that the ashen elder and daemonsmith are built from the same guy for example. It was a pleasant surprise since lately gw has been slacking on dual kits, I guess not helped by the fact that weapon options have been largely scoured from the game.

It doesn't need to be clarified when it's assumed. You only need to clarify when you're talking about specific comparisons.
Most automobiles have 4 wheels (excluding bikes of course), but some variations have 3 or 6. Only in very specific circumstances do you need to clarify that you're talking about a 4 wheeled vehicle instead of a 3/6 wheeled.

IDK also have some glaring rules issues that I was worried about when the book first came out. And that is that they seemed to have over nerfed the army in exchange for the flexibility of the new tides. They half assed removing High Tide and ended up still having to take into consideration that the army MIGHT have one activation at SF despite there being flat out better options now for tides selection because it only works on your turn. It’s effectively a dead tide if you’re going second. The army’s main damage comes from companion weapons which only has one buff coming from Mathaela while a vast majority of the armies combat buffs only affect the rider weapons which are largely negligible, especially after eels took nerfs. Soulscryer is a waste of a warscroll in his current state with the Akhelian King not far behind. Storm Eidolon is unimpressive for a flying monster combat hero, yeah he’s got his +1 wound buff but it doesn’t affect companions. Anything involving Namarti can only amount to being an annoyance and the best thing they can currently do is make some bricks of 20 with a Soulrender reviving a minimum of 3 to each unit through subfaction+trait combos. Which leads me to the next point, subfactions being ass. It’s a pretty dire situation when our best subfaction is the seasonal sharks one and it’s really only that way because you’re playing with over 2k points of models that can appear near whatever objective or terrain it needs to be near for battle tactics. Sharks are really jacks of all trades, masters of none. Very swingy on damage and don’t need much to go down. Beastmasters is the other choice but you run into the issue of not having much else to supplement your eels. Then what does GW do? Punish us for taking either because heaven forbid we don’t want to run the other shit-ass subfactions. So you have two spammy build options for armies that won’t immediately put you on the back foot. 1/2
>>
>>97035449
I just can't get myself to like CoS. They look overdesigned and unpleasant to paint. Their two named heroes being garbage both model wise and character wise (I've read the BL books) doesn't help either.
>>
>>97035534
2/2
When SoG goes away and if we don’t see anything on that level replacing it, I fear you’re gonna see IDK rates take a big hit. Sure other people won’t have their SoG stuff, but many more will have new books that they don’t have now. Then we come to the army’s actual playstyle and strategy. What on the cover reads as a glass cannon, hit hard and fast army actually ends up playing a game of tap dancing around objectives and terrain to play the mission in some sort of poorly defined control/tempo army that you can rarely find advice for because the army is already unpopular due to lack of model support anyway. Enough of my ranting, though.

I feel like because idk have been historically pretty oppressive they were really afraid to buff anything even after taking away the high tide gimmick, not realising the army has always been built on eels. Making thralls not shit or reavers anything better than okay is not going to make idk terrorize everybody again, but gw doesn't realize that. Idk are now in a very uncomfortable position of :
-limited range (more heroes than non heroes)
-complicated to play
-not actually all that good
I feel like you can have 1 or maybbbbe 2 of these issues, but not all 3. Also doesn't help that lots of people lost confidence in the faction when the "second wave" they've been hyping up for almost a decade was such a letdown. Hard times ahead for idk, though I won't say no to cheap models from competitive piggies.

nta, but her lore is all about Power to the Namarti, the true children of the deep, we shall overcome, etc etc.

>>

IDK is complicated to play in the sense that you can't be a retard and win with them, they're very much a finesse army. It's not that their rules are complicated, it's just not easy that simple to win with a bunch of fast but squishy fishes and not much else.
>>
>>97035934
Compared to other armies, yeah. It’s always felt like you’re having to consider and account for so much more than other armies to achieve a similar result. Like SBGL or STD can just chuck a unit at an objective to hold it, if they lose some dudes, whatever. For Deepkin in either of the two best builds you’ve got to take into account threat ranges, possible scenarios, next steps. It’s tiring sometimes.
>>97035955

Is he this stupid and edgy in AOS too?
>>
>>97036286
Absolutely. You can use about any colour as your shade tone for white and still have it read as white provided its smooth enough and used subtly. Like any colour the bigger your surfaces, the smoother you need to be, but with whites it's especially important

I don't really have a reason to buy them other than they are cool, it's a fomo box and it's a very good deal, as they will sell for slightly less than a current TOW battalion. Which is insane considering how expensive Darkoath are and how much uglier the sculpts are.

They're meh. I generally still prefer the old marauder horsemen who were completely fine and made for good conversion material. As for the foot marauders, I think Kairics are still the gold standard, and thats gonna be cheaper than the new norscans.

Helsmiths of Hashut, Cities of Sigmar or Lumineth Realmlords for my first AoS army? I play Necrons in 40k.
What does /aosg/ think?

For both Hashut and Cities I could get their army sets.

Had a gander at Starseer's Ruin. Seems alright. So far one thing sticks out
>freeguilders tenuously allied with seraphon
>tenuous in large part because the seraphon interpreter is a jerk
>knows human language but not so much human manners
>as in he will say humans don't need the warmth of a campfire because it's much more important the seraphon stay toasty
>gets to the point where his fellow seraphon threaten to beat his ass unless he shuts up
>chameleon skinks remark that he erred by calling the apes "apes" to their ape faces

Helsmiths are weak and ugly. CoS are ugly and tricky to paint well.

Any time I see people coming into the game/hobby asking this my answer will always be to choose what you like in this order: Models>Hobby>Lore>Rules.
>>
>>97037177
You should try to play AoS before committing financially. 4e is unironically not for everyone. A lot of people dropped out locally due to the changes. If you just want to paint then buy what you think is coolest but for playing, you should really thoroughly explore the game first as it’s in arguably its worse state ever gameplay wise (not counting the meme launch of AoS)
>>
>>97037177
If you don't pick models you love for the models you'll be really upset when the rules change. Aos is a testing ground for things in 40k, and we've seen really big change ups to how the game plays with each editions
>>

>i play necrons in 40k

....are you looking for something that plays like necrons? because none of those are it.

>helsmiths
easiest to paint, shield wall with strong guns, wizards and cavalry. medium to low speed. plays a lot of resource management and priority focus buffs, as well as needing to take territory on the map. highest skill floor, medium skill ceiling

>cities
moderately tricky to paint, but lots of metalics which are forgiving. gameplay is mix of tanky cheap cavalry and guns/artillery, with a bunch of techy little support pieces. lots of efficient, budget units and overlapping synergies and complimentary units. low skill floor, possibly highest skill ceiling in the game

>lumineth
not as hard to paint as you might think, apart from gems. gameplay is whatever you want it to be, has every role in the game and is good-ish at all of them. accurate precision damage and some strong magic buffs and debuffs, also some wild combat powerhouse and wizard heroes. doesnt have a ton of bodies though so losses hurt. medium skill floor, high skill ceiling.
>>
>>97037278
Helsmiths are generally easier to paint. So I would go with them. Cities is probably gonna get major range expansions every edition, so they’ll always have new toys. Could also try Warcry with them.
>>
>>97037278
I thinks it's easier for you to make a cities army do what you want modeling and gameplay wise. There's only so much you can do with hellsmiths. Both are going to get more models eventually. But hellsmiths just got theirs so you'll be waiting a while for new stuff if you aren't excited about everything in the army

Cursed City continued it's plot in NightWars where you essentially run around and kill a bunch of other named Vampire models that were sold in that awkward period where CC's future was up in the air and GW were clearly selling Cursed City models. In which you can also bump into Radukar during to say, yeah he's still alive.
Going into Nemesis, after killing the other Vampire Lords in Night Wars, Radakur's back and managed to get control of the city again as he managed to consolidate power but this time he's gonna keep coming back stronger and stronger as you (with his 2nd model) as you run around the city trying to save as many people you can because during Nemesis you find out the city's gonna get destroyed.
So the campaign makes you search for a realmgate with the survivors to get the survivors out, but when you find it, the realmgate isn't working and Radukar's currently still trying to blow up the city to gain power and make him the equivalent of a Mortarch in power. So now you gotta go challenge him again cause this is gonna be the only way to stop the people of the city from dying is to stop him, for like, the 4th(?) time now. Once you win, Radakur is beaten and crippled, the Realmgate opens allowing the survivors to make it to Azyr. As you're about to kill Radukar, Nagash shows up to save Radakur and tells him he's over-stepped himself and needs a re-education, while animating a horde of undead to over-whelm the Party. The party is implied to have died in the swarm Nagash has sent to well, kill them as the survivors wait for them to come through the portal to Azyr, but they never do.

The end.

cities are pretty good, just make sure to avoid the elf and dwarf shit, its not long for this world
>>
>>97037369
Maybe they'll reconsider having some of the hero characters killed off in the future since there's been an official statement on if they hard died in the swarm.
But by the time of Nemesis, it seemed GW was very much just done with both the setting and the quests cast.

Best of luck with the painting. It's a good think GW made stormcast as a starter faction because I can't imagine how many people would have quit trying AoS if they were forced to paint 2k points worth of cities units to play.

I need them not to put in cogforts or I'll be tempted to make cities my next army I definetly can't afford.
>>
>>97037411
As much as people in the community complain about it, I feel like there's not actually that big of a demand for dwarves and elves in cities. I think people mostly just want to play as more normal elves and dwarves, which is not what GW would design them as.
>>
>>97037428
That leaker said the cogfort is bigger than a gargant. I feel like it's going to suck for the game like Knights suck in 40k.
>>
>>97037443
I think the real demand was to have mixed units not segregation squads. A Steelhelm unit with 5 Humans, 3 Dwarves, and 2 Elves. The Ironweld Cannon crew with a Dwarf smoking a pipe while the humans load it, stuff like that. Instead GW doubled down on what seems to be Imperial Guard meets the original concept of Tau as a racial coalition faction.
>>
>I think people mostly just want to play as more normal elves and dwarves, which is not what GW would design them as.
As long as they're bipedal id likely fuck with it. Im fucking inches away from starting a living city army, I dont even need traditional duardin, give me root kings and wanderers.
