Asked in the last thread already butWhat are the best dungeon crawler board games? Why are dungeon crawler games often boring and tedious instead of an exciting adventure? Why is controlling the monsters less fun than being the heroes, to the point that many games automate that part of the game?

>>97039335>What's the best specific component? As in, not just 'wooden pieces' but 'the chunky wooden Ra piece'All of the wooden pieces in Weimar. Nice weight and feel, screen printing is great, and there are a lot of them. Probably the most overproduced game I've played that wasn't minis. The worst is a toss up between the plastic dead city markers for Railways of the World (just make those cardboard tiles) or the Hegemony card stock. >Dice vs. Cards and metal coins vs weighted chips. Where do you stand?Chips over coins but dice vs cards is too nuanced to decide.>Is chunkier always better, haptically speaking?I think so - board gaming is a tactile affair after-all.
>>97039335>What's the best specific component?the best thing I've ever seen is printed meeples for lords of waterdeep in the cube colors and nearly the same size but the shape of fighters, clerics, wizards as each represented. it was the most kino thing I've ever seen in a boardgame.for production games it's the mini meeples you draw in dinosaur island>Dice vs. Cards and metal cpins vs weighted chips.Cards over dice, dice are for rpgs not boardgames. I have a lot of metal coins upgrades but I don't actually like to use them. Cardboard sucks so plastic chips are where it's at.>Is chunkier always better, haptically speaking?no, scale is the most important factor. shit needs to be stable and big enough to pick up but not so big it takes over the table.
Civolution shills, you won. Played my first game yesterday, and it was breddy gud. The rulebook is bigger than I expected and took a while to get through, but the individual parts are fairly intuitive so game itself chugged along at a good pace. As it says on the tin, there's much more in the game than you'll see in any individual session which is good. We sucked pretty bad and left some mechanics untouched (literally 0 settlements built), but we got through it and I'm looking forward to getting another match in.Question for the Civolution heads though. I ran away with the game by like 50 points because all I did in the last era was just spam a busted "combo" which is not even really a combo. I had one of the starting research cards which rewards migration to developed territories with 3 VP for each tribe, so I just used it to print ~12 VPs per turn. 213 points total. Did we fuck something up, and how do your scores look at the end of a match?>Dice vs. Cards and metal cpins vs weighted chips.I think dice SUCK. Not universally (see above), but in most cases if cards are used over dice (such as action resulution) it's an indication of a gameplay system that was actually thought through instead of slapped together. Also, metal coins >>>> chips.
>no new Arkham Horror LCG campaign to go along with their new core until 2027 at the earliest Can FFG die already good god.
>>97041066you mean Navigation? Pretty sure it works a little differently than you played it>>This triggers each time any one of your tribes migrates to, relocates to or crosses through a developed territory. That means if you activate the upgraded Migration module, pass the favor test, and migrate 3 times to developed territories you will gain 9 success points (regardless of how many different tribes migrated).213 isn't a very high score anyways though, as you improve they should average around 250 unless the weather is putrid

>>97041994it doesn’t scale per tribe, only per territory crossed or moved into. you can still get roughly 12p from it but you need 3 migrations (or hooves) and the campfire bonus
>>97042017I don't get what you mean. I had max level migration and moved 3 dudes around for the VPs.
>>97042199i'm being stupid, i think you did it right

>>97041066213 is pretty good for your first game, it does get significantly higher though. Our highest was 385 but that was pretty disgusting. Massive population scoring at the end and he constantly had depraved orgies in the desert near two holy rocks.Sometimes you get insane points in the console. Sometimes you run away during the game and get fuckall at endgame scoring. Sometimes you get a lot there. It's really neat.
>>97041066>literally 0 settlements builtI'm at the point where I think you can't win the game without building all of them. They're so good. Level 5 unlock, 4 income tiles, prestiege scoring, earlier row unlocks etc.
A portfolio game that out-does Acquire has yet to be made.
Why do they never reprint their old games? They have so many great titles they shill new printings of on kickstarter. And NO Arkham Horror 3e isn't the same as Arkham 2e it's a totally different game.

That's what they did with Battlestar Galactica and Starcraft. >You’re getting AH2E and Runebound with more disabled black womenThere was a black woman in AH2e but she wasn't disabled. I don't really mind the diversity shit it just gets weird when you have a black trans postman in Arkham. It would make more sense if the game took place in Weimer germany or something but not a small town.
>>97043430They owns the rights to Android but not to Netrunner. They could still make Android: Cyber Struggles Compatible with Netrunner.
>>97043521Don’t they deliberately kill off Netrunner so it wouldn’t detract from mtg?
>>97043784Depends on who you mean by 'they', but probably. FFG was the publisher for Android: Netrunner. They owned the rights to Android but WotC licensed them the rights to Netrunner. The license expired without being renewed and the game stopped being made. But I've never heard any definite as to whether WotC did not allow the license to be renewed or FFG chose not to renew it.The joke I was making was about how Null Signal Games doesn't have the rights to Netrunner either.
FFG was massively gutted by Asmodee so I have little faith in it producing much good.
>>97039335>Dice vs cardsThose aren't even really comparable>Metal coins vs weighted chipsFor tracking currency? Coins. For literally everything else, chips.
>>97040127Controlling the monsters was fun in the Doom board game because you had to play as vicious as possible and use every single dirty trick you had at your disposal or the person playing Doomguy was gonna steamroller your ass right out the gate. Most games that have you play the monsters usually have weak monsters or are piss easy to win at as the villain because you are accomplishing an objective and just choke point the heroes with fodder while you carry it out.A good monster controlling game should really lean into you having to be real bastard to the players.
>>97043400not really though. In flip7 your randomness is random at every card draw, which is the whole game. In Scout your randomness is just in the cards you draw, from then on you either take cards others played or play a set yourself, and that's not random, it's strategical.
>>97042704any 18XX, or Railways of the Lost Atlas, or City of the Big Shoulders, outdo Acquire easily>inb4 waaah but they got more rules and complicated game always baaaaadonly to idiots who can't appreciate real corporate shenanigans and hostile takeovers.

I was looking for singleplayer wargames. Does anyone have B-17 leader on vassal? They're offering a paid module so I was wondering how it was.It seems like a good idea to dip my toes in before taking the plunge on some of the pricier physical ones I was looking at.
>Earthborne Rangers always said they were gonna do 1-2 expansions and then call it a day.>Newman joins from FFG>Earthborne Rangers already has 4 expansions, with 3 more on the wayAlso what the FUCK is FFG doing with the new Arkham art? They hired that fucking retard from Mythos Busters, so I wish the game nothing but the worst at this point
>>97044714>singleplayer wargamesLike Nemo's War or Dawn of the Zeds? or actual wargame autism?
>>97043290Lol, if they could reprint netrunner there would about 5 different core sets by now. Wizards of the Coast took the license and went home with it.
>>97044799Wargame autism but if something else catches my eye I probably won't care. For example I thought about getting Nemesis and that recent Aliens board game.
>>97044831Nemesis is really cool (it's the best Aliens game, really) but I think it suffers a lot in singleplayer, sadly
>>97044764Yeah but Earthborne Rangers is bit a shit so...

>>97044234If people dont play like retards there is no downtime. If people do play like retards, even Acquire has too much downtime. So yes, the juice is very worth the squeeze, and if you and your group like Acquire, you will like 18XX games.>>97044175Basically, it replaces the map with a central actions board and players add more actions each cycle, then select from them and either the company loses money, the player who owns that action gains money, or both. So you want to play good actions but also dont make them too good so your opponents dont run away with its benefits. Also going first is better than going last, as last players are late to the resource buying step and might just not get what they need to run and profit, unlike in most 18XX where going last means taking advantage of already built infrastructure. But also CotBS has the company turn order in a separate Appeal track rather than the share price, so you have even more things to worry about as president.
>>97044967It makes sense, like DLC for Skyrim or Fallout (the videogames) that just add new places to explore, new loot to find, new minigames to fool you into thinking this is somehow worth your money.
>>97044714the leader series is generally pretty solid. you kind've just know what you're in for regardless of the trimmings. if you want to fly imaginary B-17s or whatever I doubt you'll be disappointed. I would point you towards Storm above the Reich and Enemy Coast Ahead as options that feel somewhat more modern in design and aesthetic. Jeremy White knows his stuff.
I tried so many damn games at Pax Unplugged and none of them hit. It feels like the bigger the board game bubble gets, the more normie-core the average game is.>"cozy" slop>knockoffs that don't innovate on their genres and are clearly just there to profit off a trend>aesthetic nightmares, themed after some high fantasy/sci-fi concept by obligation but all the game pieces are just cubesSeriously, it was discouraging.
>>97045571*applauds*
>>97041659Yeah, this is pretty brutal. I mean for old players that haven't played through all the campaigns and Return Tos, it's not a big deal because that's more than a year's worth of content right there. For old players that have played everything a bunch of times, it sucks cause there's nothing really new. But it really sucks if you're a new player just getting into Core 2.0 because all you have to look forward to is a limited card pool, 2 3-scenario adventures, and a single scenario standalone. That's not going to get people excited like a full campaign would - they'll go the Marvel route instead.I also don't know who they are kidding by trying to go the standalone investigator purchase route. That works for MC because people have a connection to specific heroes so they enjoy buying their favorite hero to play. No one out there is buying up anything and everything Arkham because it's got Father Mateo in it. It's going to get real old for players buying $100 worth of investigator decks and end up with 10 copies of Guts or so they can get one specific card that's in an investigator deck.
>>97045665if you want crazy napkin designs scrawled in the fluids of the damned protospiel might be a better con for you.
>>97042613It's fun if you are playing with people that have a similar skillset as you and aren't liferstylers. I like the Railways series better because of the cards and the way that you can force the game end. It's very ugly though.
>>97044764Also dont forget>shit quality of cards for a campaign game that gets new expansions will literally decay before next years drop is doneAlso, how well will the new cards work if it requires you to keep replaying the same base campaign mostly?
>>97042704Any game where the person ahead of you can play stupid and make you lose is not a good game, let alone a good portfolio game.
>>97045583It makes sense before you get to the implementation part. Then you figure out that each new expansion area has to have its own scenario book and god knows what else, making everything feel disjointed and increasing the headache associated with playing the game. The only game I've seen so far that doesn't suffer much from this is 7th Citadel (by extension of 7th Continent). The exploration system is such that you can just plop new cards in the box to set up the expansion.
>>97045665For me it's the gall of devs selling at MSRP. "Here is this game you can get for the same price on Amazon...""...except, btw, you have to carry around a 30 pound box for the rest of the convention"If I didnt buy online at that price why on EARTH would I buy it from your booth at that price??
>>97045788they know what they gort
>>97045665I mean by virtue of the market growing pretty fast, of course there's more and more companies trying to game it. Doesn't mean there's no innovation or improvements.>>97045754Anon, we've been there before. This is something that comes with interaction, for good and bad.
>>97045788I think you're underestimating how many people visit conventions and buy everything they find even semi-interesting, which is only intensified by the convention atmosphere. Most of them will never get played, ofc. But yeah I do NOT understand why one would visit conventions that aren't focussed on actually playing games. There's no longer special promos or sales.
For how much Cole fellates kingmaking, it's surprising he's never made a pure negotiation game.

I can't remember the exact number but I think around 5000 or so get published every year across retail, online, and independent mediums. So it's growing pretty fast. Is the quality of games improving, though? That's the real question. I think some areas are better than ever. Solo games, for example. Wide variety and better quality compared to ten years ago.
>>97046069I think I have over 100 games logged and lolno. Almost every euro that initially seems multiplayer solitaire-ish becomes subjectively more interactive with increasing number of plays, largely because the moments of interactivity matter more as you are looking for an edge. Ark Nova definitely isn't an interactive game.
>>97046084 You've got Dust collecting on your shelves.
>>97046176Carlos!
>>97046164>Is the quality of games improving, though?Uniroinically doesn't really matter. Sure we get annoyed at massively successful shit games, but it's like the videogame industry. The more people are into boardgames, the more niche and weird stuff can be successful as well. Though hobby boardgaming has been weirdly resistant to slop; I mean a TON of slop gets made ofc, but the reprints and evergreens that come up again and again (like knizias auction series, el grande, dominion, etc) are suprisingly good games for how mainstream they are. Noone's talking about big crowdfunding trash a year after release

I suppose if my wife was interested in boardgames I could see myself playing a small 2p game with nice atmosphere like paris la cite de la lumiere on a slow summer sunday evening, but even then, I'd play for a challenge. What are some good, yet simple enough dungeon crawlers or some sort of adventure games? I only played Jaws of the lion and while I liked the idea of the game (party of heroes fighting through a story) the game overall did not seem that fun with the card system. It's like a timer puzzle but it didn't add to this type of game imo. Anyway are there any other that would be worth checking out that aren't a giant box and are relatively simple enough?

>>97046169No in this case there actually is 2 extra pages of rules you find that make the game more interactive. They're stuck together until you've done 50 plays.

The current starter packs are only recommended based on how much they impact the card pool, and of them the only two anyone really recommend are Jacqueline because she has a complete set of staple spells for Mysitc which is important if you don’t have a lot of player cards, and Winnifred because she actually adds a lot to Rogue. Also, I’m gonna be extremely disappointed if the new starters are mono-class like the old ones. I don’t own Dream Eaters so I wanted Tommy for awhile but not if he can’t take Survivor cards.

>>97047478It's not a 10/10 game or anything, but it's always gone over well when I show it to people. The gameplay is pretty straight forward too.At the start of every round, each player in turn order adds a cat to the spaceship. Each turn, the pilot (initially the start player) rolls dice (numbered F12234) and decides which dice to use and which not to use.The space the spaceship is moving from limits which dice can be used and most dice have to be discarded when used. After successfully moving, each player in turn order can get their cat off at a destination to score points. If the pilot's cat gets off, the next player in turn order who's cat is still on becomes the pilot. If the ship fails it crashes and the round ends. The round also ends if every player's cat has gotten off.At the end of the round, there's a check for the game to end if the ship has crashed enough times or any player has gotten all 8 of their cats to destinations. There are 3 types of destinations that all score slightly differently. You also get points for being the first player to meet objectives by having the rights number of cats at the right types of destinations. The 8 cats all have special powers.3 give extra points at certain destinations, 3 help you get to destinations, 1 makes you tolerant of the ship crashing, and 1 makes it easier for the ship to crash after you get off. There is also some "optional" stuff that you really should use if you're playing MLEM.It's variable quantities of starting dice each round, a token the pilot can spend to help move the ship, 6 markers on spaces that reward the pilot for landing on them, and hidden objectives that reward each player for getting to specific destinations.

I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Reuss' mind is so governed by bland effects and thinly veiled set collection that he has no other style of gameplay. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Spirit Island by the same Kenneth Johnson. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these manchildren are playing Spirit Island at 31 or 32, then when they get older they will go on to play Phase 10." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Spirit Island" you are, in fact, trained to play Phase 10.

>>97049761Yup. Second place gets half what first place gets, rounded down.I wasn't expecting to like it because I thought it would make things too chaotic after people have discarded cards in auctions for gold but that hasn't been my experience playing with it.What actually comes of it is that if someone has an uncontested lead in a suit, they still have an incentive to spread points across multiple suits and other players still have an incentive to draft cards in that suit. There is also a slight change to the end game tie-breakers.If there is a tie on points and gold and no player in the tie won the Diplomacy suit (the Monks suit) you check to see who has the best Diplomacy tie-breaking letter. The tie-breaking only continues on to additional suits (as it does in Biblios) if none of the players in the tie have any cards of the suit being checked. For The King (and Me) also has 21 additional cards.20 of them are only used in 5 player games. It's 2 of each gold, 1 of each of the King cards (Church cards) available in Biblios (but not the new King card), and a Livestock suit (with the same card distribution as the Monk and Pigment suits). But in a 5 player game you don't burn any cards during setup. The 21st card is a new King card that gives +1 to one suit and -1 to another. It's used at all player counts and in a 2, 3, or 4 player game you burn one additional card to keep the deck an appropriate size.
>>97046783Still disagree. Almost all the direct fuck you abilities are exceedingly rare and snatching x away from others is the hallmark of low interaction euros. Fact is you almost exclusively interact indirectly through the card market and association actions. But before we go on, you said its one of the more interactive euros in recent times. To be honest I've not played many euro releases post 2020 amd the problem is my frame of reference. Which ones do you consider lower interaction?

Looking for recs for board and card games for two. I'm not too in the loop with games but I like stuff that's easy to pick up but with a lot of depth like go and hanabi. I'm also pretty into bridge. Something like triple triad from FFVIII would be cool.I've played wingspan a few times and while it's fun it felt like there were basically just a handful of strategies to learn and then you execute them based on what you draw. Something similar but better balanced and with a little more complexity would be fine. I don't like games that seem like vectors to sell toys and someone's art, and I'm pretty agnostic as far as scenarios are concerned. That's all pretty vague but I wonder if anything comes to mind.

At least at Gen Con there's actual reveals and some exclusive shit.I'm on the other side of the country so I don't know what the scene is over there, but the conventions I attend are unironically ran for gamers, by gamers. I have a blast at them trying out games both new and old, hosted by people who actually enjoy playing them and aren't trying to sell you something. There's a dealer hall at these conventions where you can find those types, but they're very much not the draw. All the action is in the open gaming areas.I could go on, but the point is you shouldn't write off all cons just because you went to a bad one. Played Gaia Project + Expansion this weekend. Gotta say I really like the game but I got an insight into why some people hate the TM series and generally games of that genre. Had a bit of a bumpy start, made a few key mistakes (got almost no power the first 3 turns) and was acutely aware I'm only fighting for 3rd place at most midgame. While that's a skill issue on my part, the amount of time spent waiting for others after passing was massive and the endgame trend of minmaxing HARD which I already disliked before became nigh unbearable. >>97047419The biggest issue is that if someone has a commanding lead they can maintain their lead by forcing everyone to either drown or barely score any points. Boost solves that by not letting people know they have a commanding lead. You only get to see what's on your score tiles at the end of the game.A smaller issue is that if you roll a big number going down, then everyone else turns around, and you roll a small number chasing them you can lose the pack and drown because you aren't getting the extra movement from leapfrogging people. It's an unpleasant play pattern and it's something that happens to you rather than something you do to yourself. Boost gives you enough agency over your movement that if this happens it's usually your own fault rather than bad luck.

>>97056238Allegedly the recent pandemic version (I'm getting the lotr bg names mixed up, the titles are pure shit and there's been a bunch of new ones recently) is pretty good, but I'm not touching a coop.
>>97056238lotr trick taker desu
>>97056238>LotR The Confrontation (what if Knizia made Stratego)>LotR LCG (what if a game cost an arm and a leg but didn’t get gay and lame like everything else FFG touches these days)>Fellowship of the Rings Trick Taking Game (what if The Crew had Frodo in it)>LotR Fate of the Fellowship (what if Pandemic was a good game) Also Lords and Kings of Middle-Earth for WotR.
>>97056238The 7 Wonders Duel rip off is fun
>>97056477>>97056345>>97056238>LotR: the crew>LotR: Pandemic>LotR: 7w duel>Somehow they all are supposedly better than the originalThis is exceedingly weird, is lotr the one IP that actually makes products better?
>>97056523LoTR Twilight Imperium when?
>>97056697I am continuously suprised noone has yet attempted to design fantasy ti4. I mean you could more or less lift 90% off Ti, rename it thematically and still sell it. Petersen would probably not even be mad given the state ffg is now
>>97056704>>97056697The game is simply not good and not worth converting into a different IP.
>>97056523LotR: FCM when?
>>97056939LotR: Horseless Carriage when?
>>97056477>rip offit's an official remake>>97056523Brass: Mordor when?
>>97056697Dune(OG or 2019) would be a better fit than TI4, because in TI the faction uniqueness is only in a few abilities and techs, while using mostly the same ships to do the same stuff; but in LotR each faction is also unique in what objectives they have, on top of special shit they might have just happen to them because the story is quirky like that.Actually, now that I think about it a bit more, Dune is also a bad fit. When are we getting Middle-Earth Universalis: the Ring of Power? The Event card system is a perfect tool for the job.
>>97056523>is lotr the one IP that actually makes products bettermost of those were already highly rated games. Lotr is just a nice and popular theme so a 2ed of a popular game + a liked theme will most likely succeed. It would be interesting if it would be applied to a goo game but with trash theme or a bad game (that would obviously needed to be improved).
>>97057418I mean, better implies just that, not that it magically made monopoly work.Although I would argue that pandemic IS utter trash. Then again, I haven't played the lotr version so it might just be trash in a nice package
>>97056704You literally just described Runewars
Thoughts on Gamers Guild AZ?
>>97055151It's a barebones Dominion deck builder with negotiation.Negotiation entirely depends on playgroup, but in all cases makes any game 3x to 4x play time, and always suffers from lategame munckin back-stabbing.Most Euro-gamers will hate it, most casuals won't get it, and to many spikes will drag it down while in it.
>>97057636How come I see it mentioned so very rarely? Seems like "Fantasy Ti" would be enough of a selling point to see people play it once and keep it in their top 10 forever
>>97054087>"sales">check site>Jewish fomo shit>no meaningful discountsrofl
>>97057949I think it's been out of print for some time.>>97056523Are there any good LotR adventure / dungeon crawler type games?
>>97058014Lotr journeys in middle earth is one but it’s not great. I never got to play Quest for Mount Doom but heard some good things about it
>>97057495I can’t stand Pandemic either but Fate of the Fellowship dumps in a load of thematically appropriate game mechanics to the Pandemic formula that makes it a much better game than any other version of Pandemic. I’d almost say it drifts closer to feeling like a cooperative War of the Ring than anything else.
>>97055899Wait yeah, that is literally my exact result. It's probably not all that conclusive for two of us to get identical results.
Knizia...KNEEL
>>97058001>>97054087>Only product line from them I care about is Hoplomachus remastered>You can buy the base game with the expansion and health chip upgrades for just a couple of bucks extra>A year after I paid full price for the base game and health chip upgrades direct from them, and still don't have the expansionMotherfuckers, arrrrrrgh
>>97058001yea it's pretty disappointing lmao they did a stream to announce that and everything
>>97058595What's with the stupid theme.....
>>97046169Well I've played Ark Nova over 700 times, and there are definitely moves you can make that fuck the opponent so badly they will lose the game as a result, but you do have to make an effort for them. But this is only true of 2P, 3P+ is just a random fuckfest. I mean I think your post is overall accurate to euros, it's just also accurate to AN.
>>97058595Guten Tag! I kneel to „Boop“. Well done!
>>97058608It's just a Christmas theme? Are you some kind of reddit atheist or whatever?
>>97058608It's like the facets of a diamond. A different setting allows for new aspects of perfection to be seen.

>>97059109>4 greatest of all time games in one weekSounds pretty good tbqhLooking into marco polo.myself, but it seems I'm just not that much into dice placement games
>>97057682As an online store? I've ordered from there and they shipped quick with no issues. They have pretty good prices on lots of stuff about the same price as Amazon or a little less. I have a buddy that moved to Phoenix for work and he plays Magic at their brick and mortar location - said it's huge with about 100-200 people playing every night.
>>97058653its just tictactoe with push mechanics, there's not enough game to even hate
>>97059292I get what you are saying, It wasn't my first time playing Torres nor Imhotep.Marco Polo is perfection, but i suggest you to go straight to the sequel. I've been told it's even better than the original.
>>97059292Reminder that the publisher stopped selling the Marco Polo games because one of the designers called black citizens "Africans" and apparently that's super controversial in Europe.
>>97059531every game can be described as "just x with y".
>>97059826I think it was negro or something in italian that sounded too similar to nigger, which of course made every mentally ill anglo lose their shit onlineDon't know if that was the reason Marco Polo isn't getting reprinted though
>>97059838not even close
>>97059886>I think it was negro or something in italian that sounded too similar to nigger, which of course made every mentally ill anglo lose their shit onlineThat makes sense. Crayola gets complaints all the time because their products are multilingual and the black crayon has a Spanish bit that says "negro" (literally "black", as in the color). >Don't know if that was the reason Marco Polo isn't getting reprinted thoughYes, that was actually the reason. It's the top thread in the original game's forum. This was after his public apology was deemed insufficient. "We will not further publish the Marco Polo series and cancel all current orders from our partners". Peak wokeness moment.
