One of the more interesting NPCs I can recall encountering as a player was in d20 modern (set in 1950s New York), we met a pigeon that thought it was a gangster who was magically transformed into a pigeon for snitching on his boss. So he sent us on quests to get revenge against his old boss and gang and to check up on whether his son was okay.We found the gang, smashed their bootleg booze operation, freed dozens of small businesses from being extorted by them, eventually having a showdown at the gang's mansion, putting down the big mafia boss himself. But never found any trace of the pigeon's son or how to turn him back human.We eventually figured out he was never human, he was always a pigeon who accidentally got uplifted by a wizard doing strange experiments and who wandered into the local movie theater and watched too many gangster movies. We couldn't be too mad at him since all his intel proved to be good when it came to the goings-on of the city. He just never stopped asking about his son that he never had.
