nope you want to see the results of youre scraping
dude might have been sanding resin and using water so he doesnt have to breath it or use a mask
>>
>>97048490
He was sanding a normal gw plastic mini. You could see the results well. He dipped his tools in there. Also cleaned off the sanded off plastic bits off the model with a toothbrush, which he also dipped in water.
>>
>>97048214
What did you use for the reds? I've been trying to figure out magpies but dislike GW insisting on Khorne Red for them.
>>
>>97048291
Bases sizes generally aren't mixed in units. That set is a collection of models from different units hence why some are on 40's while others are on 32's. You wouldn't see a mix like that in a normal unit, except where you attach an HQ to a unit that has a different base size.
>>
>>97048515
hello fren

i primed with a black primer, basecoated AK Wine Red, Washed with Army Painter Strong Tone, Layered with Army Painter Fanatic Dragon Red and highlighted with Pro Acryl Orange.

But that mix is just what i have already, I couldve used just army painter fanatic too.
>>
>>97048476
for plastic? no. for resin, some people will wet sand it to keep dust down but idk wtf why they'd be dipping the knife

>>
>>97048503
I can understand sanding some miliput that is gap filling plastic or sanding resin but I don't see much point for just gw plastic. If there are any spots that you want super smooth or are too delicate to scrape you:
>fine grit sand paper, folded into V
>gently, don't use much pressure do light circles
>soft flat brush to brush clean
>plastic cement with built in brush like tamiya or mr hobby, use it to gently brush the part you sanded to make it smooth
Once you've primed them you won't notice.

Is there a tierlist for best synthetic brushes? I'm currently using an old kid's taklon brush that I had laying around and I've noticed that it's much better than the craft nylon brushes I was previously using. I had so much trouble taking care of nylon brushes that I was wondering whether my technique was just terrible but now I'm thinking that maybe they should only be used for watercolors and such.
>>
>>97048851
Honestly with how cheap they are just go to a high end crafts store like Blicks or what have you and buy one of each of the sable-replacement synthetics and try them all out. I did that once and ended up with like 6 different synthetics for the price of 1 sable brush, tried them all and still didn't like them -- at least, didn't like them nearly as much as real sable.

Of the ones I tried I liked the Princeton Aqua Elite and the da Vinci Cosmotop Spin the best, but they still were a far cry from a real sable brush.

Does anyone know of a great high quality acrylic paint range with the primary colors? I want to exercise limited palettes and none of the hobby brands just make “Primary Cyan”

>Does anyone know of a great high quality acrylic paint range with the primary colors? I want to exercise limited palettes and none of the hobby brands just make “Primary Cyan”
I can vouch for Liquitex Acrylic Gouache, it's great paint but the big downside is that the bottle size is much larger so the price is quite a bit steeper. $10 to $15 a bottle for 59mL bottles instead of the $4ish for 17mL you get for hobby paints. Cheaper per mL, sure, but much higher up front cost. Still, if you're doing limited palettes it's not that expensive.

Also, try the Zorn palette, it's a fun one. Titanium white, ivory black, medium red and yellow ochre/oxide.
>>
>>97048879
I use the blick wonderwhite brushes as beater brushes for base coating and such. $2 - $3 a brush for a good soft synthetic isnt bad at all.

I find it tricky to highlight red tones. Do you like what I did for this guy? What could I do to make it better? I don’t think adding orange highlights would help much what do you think?
>>
>>97049120
Looks decent anon. It comes off as a deliberate scratchy or sketchy style. I usually highlight red with evil sunz scarlet or wild rider red if im buiding up from a nuln oil'd mephiston red. Some metal weathering would go a long way
>>
>>97049120
When highlighting red you need to decide if you want the highlight to be a warm or cold color. You can take your existing red and add a little white to make a pink for a cold highlight, adjust how much white until it looks about right. For a warm highlight you can add a little yellow or orange to your red. Other option is what you did here, make the red the brightest and shade everything else. As you paint you'll get more experience and brush control, which will improve everything else that you do.
>>
>>97049120
not to be a dick but if it was me I would worry about getting your base colors down so you can't see black through it before I worry about trying to highlight it.

>start painting my first model
>pick a space marine
>use black primer
if I don't put direct light over it, it looks almost black. (yes I know I just gave it one blue layer)
I'm probably being paranoid on my first fucking model but should I avoid black primer?
Maybe I should've added gray/white lights before painting blue?
Or maybe the blue is okay and now I gotta paint with a lighter blue over the dark blue?
>>
>>97049280
Blues rarely show up well in the dark. And sometimes even bright blues will appear purple under low light conditions. It is just a foible of being closer to black on the light spectrum. That is fine as a base colour, but you do need some brighter layering on it. And then the final highlighting will help as well. Eyes define shape and brightness by contrast. At the moment your eyes will have trouble defining much on the model since it is black and blue only. You gotta trust the process and get to having all your base colours on there before things will really start to take shape. And heads up that any other bright colour on the model will make the blue look even darker due to comparative framing.
>>
>>97049280
Black primer is fine. You could always do gray if you think it's too dark.
>Maybe I should've added gray/white lights before painting blue?
>Or maybe the blue is okay and now I gotta paint with a lighter blue over the dark blue?
Lot of people do the latter anyway.

use the color primer that will give you the shade you want when you paint over it. if that's black then use black. if it's gray or white or brown then use gray or white or brown. you're only on your first model don't gaslight yourself into bad habits that you will spend the rest of your life coping about.

don't be this guy who has been coping for so long it's the only language he speaks now
>>97049333

you got a darker shade than you were expecting. that's ok. you're learning now. you don't have to convince yourself that it's actually what you wanted and your eyes are playing tricks on you. in the future if you aren't sure how something will turn out I recommend testing it first on a spare piece of something, or even just a plastic spoon. try painting the same color over different primers and decide which shade you like best.

>>
>>97049461
Looks better than it would with just a metallic gold I think. Like the other guy said, a dry brush of some metallic gold or silver will probably be very nice.
Also that terrain is really cool.
>>
>>97049439
be honest with yourself and everyone here. there's exactly one reason it looks the way it does: because he painted blue over black. the poster observed that the shade was darker than he was expecting and even came up with the correct solution himself. the only correct advice was "yes it looks darker because you painted it over black. if you paint it over gray or white it will look brighter." pilpul about how blue can look purple and contrast will make it look better won't help that poster get the shade he was expecting, it's just teaching him how to gaslight himself into thinking that not getting the color he wanted is actually fine.
>>
>>97049602
I was explaining the part about why he couldn't see it at all except under direct light and how due to black and blue being so close the blue won't stand out until the black colour is something else. At no point did I encourage him either way on using black primer or not using black primer. And until he layers over it with a mid tone or sees with with any other brighter colour on the model he won't have a real idea what the final result will look like overall. And that would be where layer interactivity comes in which is what you are leaning into.
>>
>>97049548
what the hell is aged gold? gold doesn't tarnish or form any kind of patina. there's gold recovered from tombs that's thousands of years old and looks the same as when it was put there.

>>97049654
>why he couldn't see it at all except under direct light
yeah because it's a dark color in dark lighting. you could have the same thing happen with a dark red even though red is on the other end of the spectrum.
>>
>>97049398
Just so we can settle down that other autist that seems to think there is some conspiracy to get people to prime in black or whatever his hangup is. The brightness of your prime will affect the overall brightness of your paint job due to paint being translucent to varying decrees. The colour of your prime affects how many layers you might need to reach opacity, hence why priming in the main colour you intend to use can be beneficial. A nice neutral or darker neutral grey (e.g. Panzer Grey) is usually a nice middle ground where it doesn't swing in either direction too much whilst still being bright enough to discern detail whilst looking at it before painting. Where a black or a dark brown prime can come in handy though is if you intend to stipple on layers for free weathering/distressed effects but that is probably something best left until later once you understand layering and layer interaction better. Right now just get used to applying coats to reach opacity and then working from there.

Not sure why the dude was dipping his knife in water but I can see why he did this. If your miniature is 1:100 then the photons hitting it also need to be 1:100 which is physically impossible.
but also the "cloth" on the miniature would have to be perfectly accurate scale cloth at 1:100 as well, and so on for every detail on the miniature.

As the other anon said, do you like painting? Because it takes a good bit of practice to be good, and if you neither enjoy the process nor the results that's going to make said practice rather torturous for you. And, frankly, even if you get to the point of enjoying the results it won't be much fun to paint if you don't like the actual painting part.

Each time I apply matt varnish, it partially desaturate colors. Effect is stronger with brush than airbrush and honestly don't know what to do to mitigate this. At the other hand, I feel that I must varnish the minis to prevent paint chipping.

That's how colors and light works, anon. Glossier = more vivid and vice versa. There's no way to prevent or mitigate this. People usually use more vivid paints if they plan on going flat or ultra flat.

>>
>>97057221
No, it is not. But gloss varnish usually makes it a bit smoother, cleanup, too.
>>
I'm trying to put some decals on an object with some raised shapes along the panel.
It would be a pain to try to cut around them (and I think it would ruin the decal). Can you micro sol decals enough to simply paint over them, or is there always going to be a 'raised' decal texture on the panel?
>>
>>97057254
It's usually a good idea to varnish to unify the surface anyway. I dunno about microsol, I use the mr hobby decal chemicals but yes, after a couple applications you could paint over them and it's going to be smooth.

Do people really still prime black and try to paint over it? Priming black is for sketching light with white. Learning color theory can also save you a lot of time. You can prime directly in your shadow color and then jump across to the contrasting complementary color for your highlights. Then you can slap some contrast paints on and do some finishing highlights or oil paints and boom you're done.
>But I don't have an airbrush
Then get one. All the money you spend on cans over a year is almost the same if not more than an airbrush setup.

>>97058296
You prime in what color makes the most sense. If you have opaque paints that can cover the black or you want the black undercoat to darken your paints you prime black. If you want to use light colors or colors that are transparent/semi transparent then you prime white or light grey. Grey is in the middle if you aren't sure or don't care.

Primer is just another tool, like any tool use the one that makes the most sense for the job you are doing.
>>
>>97049280
Your instincts are right, anon. Prime grey or white and save yourself the hair-pulling annoynace of trying to apply layers over black. Black primer isn't the way to shade a mini, and shadows aren't black unless you're in a pitch black cave. As a beginner learn to shade with washes and recess shading. I'd advice to watch some peachy tips videos and see if that sort of base shade highlight-style suits you.

You're going to learn a lot in your miniature painting journey if you keep at it. Once you're more experienced you'll learn about volumetric color modulation.
>>
I usually prime black. I don't really think about the primer color cause its going to get zenithal'd with whatever usually.
>>
>>97056360
why do they all except for the 3rd one express scale as a length instead of an actual scale like most other scale models? why are gw minis in metric scale when all of the game rules are in inches?
>>
>>97058427
The number refers to the standard infantry base diameter the rest of the game is scaled around, not so much a scale model reference.
>why are gw minis in metric scale when all of the game rules are in inches
Now that I've wondered. It's a thing in some other wargames too. Maybe inches are more practical than cm that could be overly granular.

Looking at the slime model now, it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to paint - just time-consuming with all the bending you'd need to do. You could probably get away with sticking to one colour for 80% of the model (save for any clothing/accessories), and simply shifting that value up or down.

For modelling something like the prow of a boat that need to have uniform symmetrical curves, what method would be the least involved / autistic? So far I have considered carving xps foam close to the contour layer by layer and sanding it to a curve, laying plasticard or balsa wood strips over frames, or trying my hand at learning a modelling software to have it printed (probably Solidworks). Assembled the prow will be roughly 9" x 7" x 7".
>>
>>97062525
Finding a piece of appropriately curved plastic packaging and cutting it to size would be my suggestion.
>>
>>97062544
I've been keeping an eye out as my I've been doing my christmas shopping, but no luck on that front.
>>
>>97062525
Do what the real boats do and build a frame made of 2d cross sections, and plank your outer surface around it.
>>
>>97062525
Papier-mache for the general shape, then a thin coat of greenstuff for small adjustments and sandability?
>>
>>97062525
The fastest is cutting paper templates (since folding them in half means you're guaranteed to be symmetrical), roughing-in a stack of XPS by cutting straight up-and-down, spiking them together with bamboo skewers, and then sanding it evenly to the width of the next level. You can even use the negatives of the paper templates to check your contours, especially if you mount them on cardboard before you cut them out. Then soak the outside in plasti-dip or a similar sealer for a hard surface, which will also hide the fused surfaces between layers. Remember to mark the centerline and the pinning points with the templates on each piece before you start cutting shit out.
There are also papercraft design programs out there you can use to make templates for heavy cardboard or plastic sheets. Planking a series of bulkheads/frames does work, but you need to steam wood or heatgun plastic, and it's a fiddly business. Cardboard really needs more support to hold up than some of the other materials, but you can get away with it using extra bulkheads or some support from the rear.

...also depending on what kind of ship you need, TTCombat sells a cheap bulk container freighter that's pretty close to the size you want.
>>
>>97061586
I'm not paintologist but in my understanding:

Medium: the thing that makes paint become plastic when cured, also carries the pigment, meaning it keeps it uniformly spread and locks it in the cured plastic layer, adding more of the same medium would only make the paint more transparent. This also determines paint finish, gloss, sating or matte.

Thinner: makes the mix thinner (duh), more transparent, more runny so you can paint thinner layers easily, faster drying, also lowers surface tension, so the mix spreads better, beads less, less brush marks, would be a bit less durable since the medium is more spread, if added to very matt paints may make them a bit less matt, or gloss less gloss

Retarder: a thinner that makes the paint dry slower

Flow improver: kinda like a mix of thinner and retarder, more focused on lowering surface tension a lot and not drying super fast

From here any product would be a mix of those.

Glaze medium: thicker than normal medium, makes paint more transparent, less runny, same durability, may change shine and probably has a bit of retarder too

Thinner medium: from above, more transparent, more runny, probably keeps drying time and durability

Wash medium: a lot of flow improver+thinner+medium+custom stuff, makes paint more transparent, thinner, runnier, lowers tension, seeks and pools into recesses, keeps pigment uniformly spread so it doesn't cofee stain, etc

Water: dissolves the mix, so it actually stays a mix before evaporating to allow the medium to cure, adding more means paint is thinner, more transparent, runs more, adds surface tension, but pigment can separate easier, the curing is not as strong and surface tension being what it is can lead to cofeestaining. If you see your color separates a lot when adding water, use medium and or thinner instead, some colors are more prone to this.

I'm sure some autist (not derogatory) with actual knowledge can correct me if anything is wrong

I want to buy some "contrast" paints and from my research it seems that speedpaints 2.0 and AK quickgen are pretty similar.

Did any of you had experience with any of them? Whats your opinion?
>>
>>97063782
Speedpaints are better to use as paints, Contrast are better to use for glazing over a base coat.
>>
>>97063782
As with everything else (apart from acrylic washes), AK is better. Quickgen is more consistent across the board, the pigments are not bottom of the barrel trash like with AP, and they have opacity/intensity marked on the bottles, too, so you don't have to wonder how the fuck the paint will behave. And there's no fuckery when you try working with oils/spirits.
Still, Speedpaints 2 are fine, but there's imo no reason to buy them if you can get AK.

I'm assuming we're talking about something a regular dude, not a character or anything. Depending on the amount of detail between 10 and 20 hours. I usually jump in between different projects to keep it fresh so finishing a squad is usually spread out over a couple weeks or even months

How much did you guys spend on your secret Santa?
I'm looks my at buying some of the stuff he asked for and it's getting very expensive very fast. My other problem is that I kinda want these minis too, I fear if I spend all this money on minis I WANT for someone else I'll be tempted to keep them when they arrive

Depends what it is and if Ive painted em before. Space marines maybe a weekend. A week of evenings if they have chaos trim. But often takes longer for everything depending on focus or distractions. One weekend I did 10 terminators, but 30 khorne berzerkers took 6 months.

I'm about to varnish some terminators in a few days in preparation of a pin wash with enamel paint. From what I've read most recommend gloss varnish but I only have a can of matt varnish on hand. Is that good enough for an enamel pin wash? Or do I need to buy some gloss varnish to provide the best possible surface for that glorious capillary action.
>>
>>97064838
gloss is necessary if you're wanting the sharpest application. With matte varnish the behavior would just be similar to what you get with no varnish, possilby worse if its already somewhat slick from something like a dried shade or wash. Not to say it's awful. I oil wash on unvarnished all the time out of not wanting to wait, and the results are fine with a sharp sponge for cleanup. Gloss does make a difference though if you want something like clean mech panels go gloss.
>>
>>97064403
>I have to purchase

You dont have to purchase anything if you got piles of stuff to give away already
>>
>>97064902
To add, it is probably beneficial to varnish anyway. Because with cleanup if you use mineral spirits, the varnish can protect the layers underneath as you clean the excess pinwash. Again I do it a lot without varnishing and its usually not an issue, but I let the paint cure a day or 2 before pinwashing.
>>
>>97064838
The gloss is specifically what you're after, and it's important. The problem is that you won't be able to clean the enamel off of a non-glossy surface. You can mostly, but it will stain unless the surface is glossy.

if you're doing it in solidworks you can model it as a loft. just draw the cross section at various points and connect them together. if you want to carve it out of foam you can do basically the same thing. make a few templates and cut the foam away until the template fits over it.

White spirits and mineral spirits are the same thing, and while anything you can thin enamel paints with is an enamel thinner most of hat's sold as enamel thinner is liekly just white spirits.
Oh, and enamel paints at leats used to be oil-based. So yeah, oil thinner and enamel thinner are also the same thing. Though apparently the term has gotten decidedly fuzzy as of late, so I can't promise everything that's sold as enamel will play nice with white spirits or turpentine or so. But hobby paints usually seem to be proper enamel paints when labelled as such at least, and many (but not all) weathering paints (so MIG streaking effects, that kind of stuff).

>>
>>97065336
I go in and out, both with painting and playing. Honestly it's kinda like once or twice a year I'll get into a tabletop mood for a couple months and do a bunch of printing, painting and at least some gaming, but then some new paradox game or patch will come out and I'll get distracted by that and then not do any tabletop stuff until i get the itch again.

Kinda wish I wasn't like this because it leads me to have a massive, massive backlog/pile of shame. Honestly I could probably pay a month or two of my mortgage just selling my boxed grey plastic on ebay, not even counting the stuff that's printed/primed and just left to sit in a box.

Honest opinion, the leather on the rider needs to change. Its the same color as the saddle, harness, and the saddlebag behind her. Its just a lot of the same color in the same area, pulls your gaze to that area rather than the rider and mount's head. Leather being consistent between the saddle/harness/saddlebag isn't a problem and can be weathered to break it up nicely so it isn't as big of a eye catch.

If I ever did a high corruption SM army, it would probably be Word Bearers. There's something fun about how unapologetically all-in they are.
>>
>>97067199
More brown and green. Add verdigris to extra tell everyone that it's not gold.
>>
>>97067243
>brown and green
interesting, where would you recommend placing those over metallic coats?
>verdigris
true, but I want a cleaner bronze

Kill team box is a great way to do a one off project with a theme. I got these guys first and painted them up, then got a CSM combat patrol that I painted as word bearers, now I stripped the kill team to paint them again since I(like to think)'ve improved quite a bit since then.

Something along these lines in general, currently I'm just painting in my aquilas in PA bronze and washing them with AP ruddy fur and it gives a decent enough finish but I feel like it reads like dingy gold more than anything

How degenerate is the mini?
>>
I got my SS coomer minis. Like, maybe 2 dozen of them. I'm worried I should maybe also get a few normal minis just in case. They checked they were fine with coomer minis, but that might not mean they want a pile of them.

You start off with your base colors, and you do very very light glazes for highlights. I would start with a mix of base color and highlight shade for the glaze. The key thing with comic book style (including actual drawings) is the use of black lines to "segment" parts of the figure. These are thin an uniform with no bleed over to the parts of the mini (e.g. clean lines/highlights/pin washes) AND the thickness of the line frames the figure. A thicker line for the outline (based on artist and I would use it as a guideline for clothes/gears/etc for the mini) and thinner lines for the internal lines of the figure
Hopefully that makes some sense, pic related for the line stuff

Fun! Good skin
Dark brown wash on the nails to set a bed would be good too
>>
>>97066200
That's a crisp white tho, gj
>>
>>97066132
Crisp white highlights, then a very thin coat if white followed by a glaze of dark brown/black to fill the eyebrows would hit that last 10% if you're willing. Looks good as is atm

Probably fine depending on the mini, but maybe some grass for color addition
>>
>>97067338
That looks like bronze to me already
>>
>>97067243
it depends on the particular alloy but I feel like brass has a green tint but bronze is slightly orange.

>>97067274
to be honest family instead of trying to tint your metallics I would just buy from a brand that's actually looked at bronze once in their lifetime. I don't know if that .pdf was fucking up the lighting as a joke but like 80% of the metal colors it shows look absolutely nothing like what the name says they're supposed to be.

I have no idea what the visual difference between brass and bronze is, and honestly, I don't think there really is. They're somewhere between copper and gold, with a few different shades mixed in.

I just pick out whatever metallic paint I have that, "feels," best for the moment. Citadel Runelord Brass and Pro Acryl Dark Bronze are great go-to paints.
>>
>>97067893
I think there's a clear difference. Like, no one would ever call a tuba or a trumpet bronze.
>>
>>97050316
acrylic gouache dries like acrylic paints
Classic gouache can forever reactivate with water and is good for weathering

Correct me if I'm wrong
>>
>>97067893
brass is much paler than bronze or gold

its pretty common in FDM hinges, especially in function prints, since you KNOW everyone has a 1.75mm dowel of any size, and its stronger to use unprinted filament than try print a small and accurate hinges.
>>
>>97068287
Makes sense to me, I'm just pretty new to FDM so I hadn't came across that before.

I realize I’ve wasted 2 hours trying to photograph my newest minis on white instead of black for once(following anon's guide posted the other week)…then my phone camera now randomly has grey dots on it in 3x portrait mode and the other modes are too washed out or dark. I swear I get worse and worse at photographing minis every time I try and the best shots are always impromptu ones on my desk without a backdrop.
I just want decent pictures, man.

No, it's not 3D print. Game is named Eldfall Chronicles, it's "new" (Kickstarter box was released in 2023 or something but now they started to sell regular boxes at shops).

Is there anything different between using pill bottle paint handle and expensive paint handle like this?
>>
>>97067318
I have the Legionaire Killteam because I bought the Nachmund box, but I never ended up touching them. That might be a fun project to palette cleanse my army painting.
