Art mediums aren't particularly cross compatible, they behave very differently and require very different process to get similar results. You can practice 2d, and that will give you an idea of where to place lighting, but most of painting miniatures at a beginner level isn't learning where to place shading and highlighting, but how to place your shading and highlighting. Learning lighting is a very late level step to learn and isn't really helpful until you have the knowledge of how to place that lighting down and have the paint behave like you want. The physical act of painting seems like the easiest thing to wrap your head around, but there are a lot more variables than you'd think, and takes a good amount of practice to diagnose and fix your issues

Basic Kabalite Warriors are the better unit right now anyway, but honestly neither of them is super great at current point costs.Expect to have to double up on all the Wych units in the box (Wyches, Hellions, Reavers) because they're busted to the moon right now while everything else is kind of just okay and not great.The nature of the army is you have three small armies in a trench coat (Kabals, Cults, Covens) and it rotates every season which one is actually good so you'll eventually need to own them all anyways. Expect to have lots of duplicates of everything though because the army isn't very elite and does not have a lot of unit variety. And whichever detachment you run is going to only work on a very small percentage of your army unless you run Reaper's Wager.
