RoR are cool in theory as allies with some more utility but it fucking sucks that half of them are like "500 points of this named character and a gaggle of elite units!", but ogres not having any game-wide ror is pretty bad too

Why do they do that anyway, to prevent people from building up a public reputation or something? I know employees splitting off and founding their own companies used to be a fairly consistent headache for gw, does that have anything to do with it?
>>
>>97078565
More than likely it's partially what you said, but also protects the artist from getting witch hunted by rivet counting faggots for getting a belt wrong or putting a black person in a visible place or adding a woman to a unit or some shit. It's more of an issue with 40k, but I'm sure they get a similar thing in fantasy

Kruleboyz have a different body type. They'd like baboons or something to regular Orruk's gorilla inspiration.
Everything else is different. Jackson film Orcs have crude armour distinct in its sharp angles or the Howe crustacean style, neither of which exist in KB.

>>

>>97078995
Isn't it pretty well-established by now that kb are riffing off of oldhammer orcs, complete with weird stuby legs and lanky proportions? I'm sure the lotr depiction influenced them, it's lotr after all, but I feel like it's not quite a 1 to 1 ripoff if there's other (more?) obvious references involved too.
Also I was like 12 when I read the hobbit lotr books but I seem to remember goblins and orcs being the same thing in those books.
The troll rider might be more of a direct reference though. The others, eh.

they're definitely drawing inspiration from hobbit orcs, though its not always 1 to 1. they also draw not insignificant inspiration from zelda. the short lets, long arms, and brown leather scrappy vests and skullcaps are very zelda orc (i think its called a moblin? bokoblin, idk the difference)

when the artists were designing the kruleboyz and some of the updated ironjawz range, i think their moodboard probably hand the hobbit/lotr stuff, zelda, and the oldhammer orcs as a starting point

i often wonder too if the artist had some involvement in deepkin, because the eidolon of the storm has some similar design language to twilight princess's zora and zora tunic designs
>>
>>97079044
He's talking about the Jackson film Orcs not LoTR in general and no, neither the Troll Rider nor the Giant Sloth are in the books lmao
Jackson film Orcs are defined by the overt exclusive use of metal mostly. Sharp menacing equipment. KB are mostly wood and haphazard nails rather than elaborate but crude equipment LoTR Orcs have

idk how anyone can look at kragnos next to a lynel and think thats not the case, its such a specific and unusual creature design.

torso of a man but with a lion hybrid face and mane, some upward curling horns, but then horse centaur lower half, and usual armament is a 1 handed weapon and round targe shield. even his coloration is practically just a pallet swap between the standard lynels body and hair color.

Wow the anvil of apotheosis is cooler than I expected, with a little potential for kitbash/custom hero. I was a little disappointed that there is no custom Bloodthirster but at least we can do a blood letter hero.

Some highlights for me:
Leathery wings upgrade, great for kitbash potential, im going to make a hero with wings for sure now.
Mount upgrades irrespective of mortal/daemon - making a Bloodbound warlord on a blood throne sounds awesome.
Kin killer flaw - great fluff, keep him away from your units

I played my last game of fantasy about 20 years ago
I picked up some witch elves about 5 years ago and rebought all paints and equipment, but didn't finish painting all the unit
Got the itch again and will pick up something new to paint tomorrow
Are my paints still ok? They shook fine and are liquid still
Why do I have bottle labelled Matte Medium? what did I use that for?
I very much doubt I'll be playing a game of anything, but any recs for things to paint that I can enjoy, but not be too tough as to put me off the hobby immediately again? Those Spearhead boxes seemed alright to start with?

I did 5 years ago. I'm not looking to play, just model and paint, and AoS seemed like a better option than painting 20 rank and file

>>
>>97080148
I'd not heard of Cathay before. The minis are new to me, but it would be rank and file stuff again and I think I'd prefer the more "free" AoS stuff to have on a shelf due to what I know as skirmish formations so each can be displayed and I'm not painting up backliners that I won't see
I had some of the old Chaos Marauder line, infantry only I think. I'll probably avoid horses for now while I ease in. Thanks for suggestions though

Hey a local guy wants to trade armys, I'm swapping my OBR for his slaanesh. Anything I should look for in particular or look out for? What units are good in Slaanesh, SHOULD I GET GLUTOS?
>>
Ok probably a touchy subject, but fuck it I feel like it’s got more leeway here vs every aos(and fantasy funnily enough) place. As a fan of both old world and aos, I originally thought that they could both coexist side by side, but I’ve started to change my mind about that after the marauder releases and some rumors I’ve seen from a guy on the whfb discord(who doesn’t say too much, but what he does say is pretty accurate). Essentially, those marauder sculpts I’m convinced were a middle finger to the aos team. Most people I’ve seen prefer them over the darkoath. And rumors are they’re going to release new plastic minis for warriors of chaos in the old world, and it’s not some new units that don’t have rules already, it’s new warriors, chosen, and knights apparently. And lastly the rumormonger basically said GW has liked how OW has sold and is pouring more resources into it(see designer change from aos to OW). Honestly, should we be worried a bit?
>>
>>97080453
Remaking chaos warriors would be a move so unnecessary it almost exceeds space marine releases
They need to actually give Forsaken a kit
>>
>>97080493
Multiple reliable rumor sources have pointed to it. Unnecessary yes, but I think if they sell out as fast as the marauders, it could indicate that aos may well have a problem on its hands. And yeah it is weird because the aos chosen and warriors are legitimately some of the best models in the system.

Is there a quick-start guide for big AoS? I know there’s a community made one kill team and I’ve seen people in person use one for spearhead.
Basically a check list that goes through all the phases and what you can or should be doing at every step along the way to guide you. Official or fan-made, either one is fine. Thank you.

Additionally is there anything I need to buy or print or make for big AoS games aside from my own models and the LGS terrain? I know I need measuring tapes and dice and counters for ritual points, blood tithe, disease, etc. Do I need any cards or other peripherals?

>>97080530
I’ve never used discord aside from when raid leaders in WoW force you to get on to hear them tell their shitty inside jokes with guild mates during a raid (“no discord no loot”)

I was surprised when my friend started telling me there’s people who spend all day sending messages in dozens of chats and sitting in voice calls. I hate to be a hater or snob but I feel justified in calling regular discord users degenerates.

>when the gaming or fandom based discord channel has an “18 plus section”
>it’s the most popular channel 9/10 times or the only channel anyone actually talks in

These models do look very cool and nicely done. As do all the new Cathay and tomb kings models.

But I’m curious if old world fags actually paint ALL the parts on every model. I don’t mean edge highlight and blend stuff like boots or chains or hooves or weapons, but what does a TOW army look like in person. If people can’t be bothered to get paint and a wash on every bit of a space marine then I don’t imagine most Cathay or Chaos armies are painted very well. Especially with how busy and dense each and every tiny little infantryman is.

There's one dude here who keeps trying to tell us the tow warriors will be god-specific or something, using a shield illustration in the new journal as evidence. Idk if there's any truth to it, but it would be one way to differentiate them from the aos ones.
>>97080453
I'm going to engage with this earnestly because I believe in you. I think gw is a very different beast than it was 10 years ago, and definitely has the means to keep multiple 'flagship games' afloat now. In that sense, tow growing really isn't a concern. As long as aos keeps doing well, it's going to keep being supported. All memes aside, it looks like that's what's happening for now. Gw need to be careful though, if it weren't for spearhead being a massive hit, 4th's bland feel would've definitely driven a lot of people out of aos, especially the 40k refugees looking to avoid exactly that.
As for tow producing identical miniatures, it's kind of weird to me. On the one hand that's a very weird allotment of resources from gw. On the other hand, you could see it as the tow team seeing a lot of players using aos sculpts in their games, and trying to ensure those sales are counted for tow instead. One of those instances where the team segregation at gw is going to hurt the company overall. Anyway just buy what you like desu.
>>
>>97081621
>There's one dude here who keeps trying to tell us the tow warriors will be god-specific or something
Nta but they will probably follow TWW and we'll get something like pic related.
Slaves to Darkness will most likely continue to be winning.
>>
>>97081664
>Nta but they will probably follow TWW
that's the complete opposite route they're going to take them. They want the chaos stuff to be subtle.

Still retarded how the Uruk Hai were supposed to be the strongest orc army in history when Azog had them beat in terms of sheer numbers and crazy ass monsters
>>
>>97080453
>Honestly, should we be worried a bit?
GW is too deep into sunk costs for aos to back down, valrak even has rumors of a total war for aos to be made (probably CA was forced to take on the project as clause if they wanted to do 40k)

What will happen is that the two games will diverge more and more and that aos will prevent tow from grabbing back the legacy factions, that's it.
>>
What're your hobby plans for this weekend? I'm trying to decide whether or not a skull hat like this works on the bloodpelt hunter.

I honestly don't know why people keep hypervenilating about TOW Marauders. Old timey chaos marauders always towed the line between two main influences-Conan and Vikings.

With the split, we now have AoS doubling down on Conan and TOW doubling down on Vikings, which is fine, people can choose their favorite flavor of Chaos Barbarian, or mix and match. Even the shield pictures from the journal that keep getting referenced emphasize the Norscan aspect of the Gods, Slaanesh as a snake, etc. So if that's the basis of the new Chaos Warriors they will likely also keep the Norscan influence, which makes sense.

Mulgoth is on the same sprue as the Blight Templars and they are not getting rules or a separate release later like the other heroes. They mentioned who is getting rules and who is not in one of the articles. Only Gelgus, Witch and the Shaman are getting rules as characters and the Cankerborn and Wretches as units. Pestigors too of course but the ones from the box will count as normal ones you can mix with the proper ones released separately.

The reveal itself was hype af but the price is going to put a LOT of people off.

One of the Darkwater cards mentions a campfire game, "Old Bones". It's played using knucklebones and is ostensibly about "weighing one's sins" against each other. The "tragedy of the jade abbey" happened in the age of myth, and inara talks about living during that peaceful time. I agree, the three natures of ogres are hunger, ice age and mercenaries, at at the moment they don't have enough momentum to explore all 3, if they ever will.

But the truth is that the BCR are not allowed to be relevant because the writer was too much of a pussy to set down the true origins and nature of the everwinter.
You may think a mystery is better, but if the everwinter had an important reason behind then it wouldn't be swept under the rug with the same vagueness it was first introduced.

Ideally all 3 natures would be tied down to their one god, via different means, either as a complementary triad or as opposites with a mediator.

BCR do ice age already and they have a simple reason for their hunger and that is generating heat.
The everwinter gives them a advantage in battle but they have to eat so they dont freeze to death, its a spiral.
I like the idea that the everwinter is the blessing of imprisoned death gods the ogres got for freeing them from nagash.
It would give them something completely different than gorkamorka and simultaneously show that death isn't just nagash.

The same can be said for a lot of the setting. Having concrete facts anywhere would help people care about shit. The realms are still massive so lots of unknowns can still exist for /yourdudes/ but if GW wants people to use the material they provide to create their own stories you can’t just handwave important shit away or leave too many open ends. AoS
In this edition the daughters of khaine are getting at least one unit with a dual build to have them as either morathi followers or krethusa followers.
New malekith is behind the corner, but he's been behind the corner for 10 years, he might come out as part of this edition's final campaigns in 2027, or it should come out in 5th, because rumormongers confirm that he, and his faction, is coming, but no exact dates.
We have currently little to no idea regarding the current dark elves models still up in the webstore (still with square bases too), their rules might stay in the cities of sigmar faction for a few more years, or they might be removed soon, but in any case, even if it's possible they'll return in TOW, especially when aos is about to get malekith out, but we have no concrete confirmations or rumors on timeframes here either.

So your only currently supported and future-proof dark elf-esque army would be daughters of khaine and idoneth still.

>fatasses, mercs, and ice road truckers
Would it really be hard to incorpore all three in one book? They all have hunger, greed, and sheer mass in common. I think their army rule could involve eating and their battle formations give your bonuses for keywords
Eg. Mercenary, beast claw raider, gutbuster or w/e. Idk I’m not an ogor fag but I know they’re popular and they’ve been struggling hard. Also they should get a beast pack unit of a several ice age beasts led by a pack master.
For armies of renown a pack of mercenaries led by a Golgfag-esque hero would be cool. Or another one of just stone horns and thunder tusks. We got an all bloodthirster AoR after all

Did people really think they could kitbash or convert this into a Nurgle daemon prince for 40K?

It’s likely sliced vertically on the sprue like all the recent monopose stuff James has been putting out. There’s nothing 40K about it, and it’s noticeably smaller than the bespoke daemon prince kit.

Without the horns and wings he’s kind of a glorified blightking.
>>
>>97082432
>Would it really be hard to incorpore all three in one book?
The problem is not making space, or making interactions, it's the baggage of expectations that weigh on gw forcing them to focus in a certain direction and the fact this is at the end of the day a niche army that doesn't warrant a trifold heavy dose of support.
>>
>>97082432
The rumors are that we're getting new Mournfangs and a new Hunter unit, so Beastclaw isn't totally ignored in the new wave, just not the focus.
>>
>>97082432
It would've been easy to just theme all ogres to the everwinter, high ranking ogres are on mounts and foot ogres have yet to prove themselves.
Maneater are ogres that left the tribes and their everwinter is too weak to manifest, they sometimes rejoin a tribe for promises of loot.
>>
>>97082420
You're right. I should clarify that I have always preferred the more armored and militaristic side of Dark Elves over the Gladiatrix half
>>
>>97082442
>There’s nothing 40K about it
And? It’s a demon prince, chaos is meant to be abstract. Aos/fantasy stuff can fit more into 40k while 40k stuff has a hard time fitting in most cases. Ironically necromunda doesn’t fit in fucking anything sometimes.

>>97082426
Idoneth aren't really close at all and are only nominally dark elves. They're really atlantean flavored high elves
>>97082472
Those are kind of neat. A little different from what I was hoping for but if that's the way they choose to go I could accept that.
>>
>>97082390
On the one hand, nobody in aos gives a shit about the city dark elves. Moving them to tow would be a lot less abrasive than moving beasts was. The witch elf part would stay in dok though.
On the other hand, we're getting tangible remarks about malerion for the first time since the game started. 4th is quite packed with big releases already, so 5th seems more likely to me. So 2027-2028 at the earliest. Will we see certain legacy factions before then? Maybe, maybe not. The tow rumourmongers have been pretty vague on that point. I do believe if legacy is on the table, dark elves are pretty likely. They need them to invade ulthuan for the storyline after all.
>>
>>97082521
>They're really atlantean flavored high elves
yeah, but they're still closer to dark elves than they are to high elves, like wood elves are ultimately closer to high elves than dark elves.

I hope this fella shows up if they do malerion's elves, but seeing as they didn't even mention the sharter for chorfs I doubt it.
Aside from that I would want them to be very heavily armoured. Both idoneth and lumineth are kind of light in that regard, except maybe the stoneguard. Even then they look a lot lighter than they should be.

Do you guys have any factions/characters or parts of the story that you really liked based on the memes and started disliking after you learned the real lore for them?
For me it was Nurgle. I liked him based on the vermintide and 40k "grandpa nurgle blessed plague gifts" memes/jokes, but the more you know about it the worse it gets.
At this point I wouldn't wanna be part of any of the chaos factions at all even if forced.
>>
>>97082790
>Do you guys have any factions/characters or parts of the story that you really liked based on the memes and started disliking after you learned the real lore for them?
Usually it’s an inverse thing with me, but I guess the meme about archy being a competent chaos champion kinda annoys me with how much the setting revolves around him, sometimes they abstract his presence (which is nice imo) but usually it’s just tiring.
>>
>>97082790
Original Slayers from Warhammer Fantasy. Do they find peace after the death? Nope. Somebody must defend Grimnir's courts where all the other Dorfs are feasting for eternity. So Slayers defend Grimnir's courts from the encroaching wave of Greenskins. Once in a while Slayer dies, appears in Grimnir's courts, is allowed to have one bite of food, one sip of beer and returns to the meat grinder outside. Repeat for eternity.
>>
>>97081621
I mean theres also the fact that this is very much GW causing issues for itself. There clearly was a split with what TOW was allowed to use and what aos was allowed to use(and yes, aos is dipping back into more whfb style units and setting developement, im shocked there are some folks who still deny that) It runs into the issue of there only being so much to draw upon, so if there are say dwarf armies in both aos and TOW, there will be some internal competition and i suspect the bean counters will look at that if they havent already. Again, completely avoidable issue if armies were 100% sectioned off from the other system, and aos didnt wqant to dip back into old whfb stuff. I really do want to emphasize though that I like both games, im a really big fan of the different chaos god armies in aos and different cultural interpretations vs just northern marauder tribes.

Same, though in the case of Warhammer specifically I originally got into it fully from the novels which I read piecemeal with no real knowledge of the overarching setting. Everyone once in a while I'd go stare at the models on the GW website and read the little army/unit blurbs but that's about as far as it went.

It wasn't until my nephew got into AoS that he was able to drag me into the actual game side of things and convince me that all that hobbying shit wasn't that hard, actually.

My first 1k points army. All of it painted. Should I drop the priest for a sorcerer instead? Also not sure what enhancement to pick so I just made my general stronger. I have more blightkings and 10 plague bearers with a bilepiper and scrivener but that’s really all the demons I own. I could also drop the flies for mor blight kings and go plague cyst but I think I need the cavalry for tactics and harassment

I suppose it doesn’t matter much for 1k but I just want to know if this list makes sense. Like I’m not neglecting a huge gap .

As Valrak said, they are trying to torpedo AoS and Darkwater is the sacrificial lamb. This has all been done (pricing, quantity printed, number sold to third parties) to ensure that on paper Darkwater looks like the biggest flop in GW history. Also it puts pressure on smaller FLGS's and the more of them that go under the more people buy from GW. Then they can justify shutting down AoS for ToW
>>
Can we expect any actuald reveals during their whole christmas thing? Will the big grotmas thing be some 40k end of edition stuff or how do these things usually go?

I am pretty confident that it's not Necromunda/Kill Team/Blood Bowl/MESBG or any other smaller games that aren't part of GW's corporate core 4 pillars as outlined in their reports.

Tbf Valrak might have been the schizo saying that.
>>
>>97084468
GW offers credits to stores for unsold product that they over allocated or for the case of unsold but now outdated rulebooks. The boxes are going to be debited back.
>>
i have been told by Mark Lam that the AoS design team actually dragged the old world design team in to the street and broke their knee caps as a warning. the necromunda design team took notes for better representation of gang warfare.
>>
>>97084469
He probably is.
An actual GW conspiracy would be they announce that they will discontinue AoS or ToW. Whichever sells less over the next financial year. At the end of the year "wow, you both sold so well and incredibly, sold exactly the same, so we're keeping both"

>>97084478
Based. Necromunda can't stop winning.
>>
>>97084444
Why would the torpedo AOS when its one of there better sellers?
>>
James Workshop told me that sells of Orruk Flesh base paint are the only thing keeping GW from filing for bankrupcy
>>
>>97084463
Remember that one schizo who would come in here claiming that necromunda was the secret third pillar of gw or something? Kinda miss him.
>>
>>97084492
It's been lethargic this last year if you the " whispers " are to be believed, but anyways, it's also unrelated to that. For better or worse there are a lot of people with seniority at GW who hold a strong distaste for AoS combined with a boomer nostalgia for Fantasy. Again, assuming Valraks whispers can be believed, I am not Valrak.
>>
>>97084111
Element games apparently had 1500 of the things, which is skaventide/saturnine tier. Sounds insane for a warhammer quest box, I know cursed city sold out immediately and it was a whole thing, but still.
>>
>>97084492
The idea that GW wants to torpedo AoS intentionally is retarded. But it feels like they're doing it unintentionally because they're STILL convinced they can make it fantasy 40k (sales wise) with just a little more tweaking which makes the game suffer and do worse every time.
>>
Just finished my read through of the Hallowed Knights storyline in AoS and I loved it. I especially enjoyed the storyline that started in Gates of Dawn and ended in Wardens of the Everqueen but the plot that unfolds in Mortarch of Night and Black Pyramid was also super cool.
Lorrus Grymn is easily one of my favourite AoS characters, why did he have to die in Broken Realms?! T_T
Just a shame the final story in the timeline involving the Hallowed Knights was Skaventide because that story was FUCKING AWFUL AND I HATED IT.

The read order was (for anyone who wants to do the same) :

The Gates of Dawn (novella - Realmgate Wars: War Storm)
War in the Hidden Vale (novella - Realmgate Wars: Ghal Maraz)
Wardens of the Everqueen
The Resolute (Short Story - Sylvaneth Legends of the Age of Sigmar collection)
Mortarch of Night
Hallowed Knights: Plague Garden
Hallowed Knights: Black Pyramid
Ghosts Of Demesnus (Short Story - Myths & Revenants)
A Dirge of Dust and Steel (Short Story - Myths & Revenants)
Hammerhal (novella - Hammerhal and Other Stories)
Hallowed Knights: The Denied (audiodrama)
The Hammer of Immanence (Short Story - Thunderstrike & Other Stories)
Murder by Moonlight (Short Story - On the Shoulders of Giants and Other Stories)
Skaventide
>>
>>97084538
the number makes sense when you see the ruleset is pretty simple, and that this box is meant to be an onboarding box to Warhammer simmer to Skaventide
>>
>>97084560
Is anyone really going to be onboarded by this though? Skaventide is 2 armies, this is 7 heroes vs 4 nurgle characters + a gaggle of units, half of which you can't even use in sigmar proper without some proxying. Sounds like the game itself is actually good though, and it certainly had a fair bit of hype, but that price makes it a bit too much to impulse buy imo. Especially with the christmas boxes already being out. It'll probably sell eventually but I think it'll take a while. It's not fomo is it?

>>97084585
>Especially with the christmas boxes already being out.
And it being Christmas. Consumer confidence in NA is at lows not seen since like the 70's and people are spending less this quarter than last quarter. Insanely retarded idea to drop a very very expensive box with very little utility outside itself with little mainstream appeal.
>>

It has been compared to Underworlds with a camping system, did give me some pause, but one of the early access reviews saying it was simpler than Hero Quest is a bit of death nell for my interest in Dawkwater, at least to me, since Avolon Hill Hero Quest is really simple.

1 Orruk Flesh = 1 Waaagh Flesh(?) + 2/3 Aveland Sunset(?)

Do people don't know how to mix paints?

(Yeah, I m a bit annoyed that I couldn't buy it on my store when I was about to paint Morgoks Krushas)

It'd be fun if GW did a bundle box for Warcry like they've done for Underworlds. Put a bunch of warbands in a box, keep it in stock for a while, then rotate it out for a new bundle, repeat. It's a much lower investment on their end but would likely receive a positive response from the community.

How is Skaventide related?
>>
Darkwater should've just used Warcry's terrain set up cards for different scenarios. GW are a miniature company first and foremost, playing on a shitty digital hex map isn't playing to their strengths imo

You are buying yellow to paint orruk armors or eyes. You are buying neutral green to make base.

Why buy 3 when you can only buy 2 for the same result?
>>97085153
It is a boardgame that uses miniatures and not a miniatures game.

Newest story featuring them, shows what some of the Hallowed Knights are doing in the Realm of Fire and gives insight into the new Skaventide dudes, the Reclusions.
It is shit but the best parts of the terrible novel were the parts focusing on the fucked up Hallowed Knights who've been reforged too often.

wow they really did it this time, AOS is surely dead any minute now, 2 more weeks, WToWG1WGA

Genuinely curious, what has aos released this year has actually flopped? Im guessing maybe the wolf riders?

everything according to the doomposters and no matter what metric you use it's flawed and you're just defending a billion dollar company

Darkwater is gearing up to be a flop on another level. Like it's going to make Skaventide look like it sold well.
>>

You think this may bode ill for aos in general? Doesnt seem to paint a great picture in all honesty.
>>
>>97085471
I mean, it doesn't bode well. But even being pretty negatively minded in regards to the (imo) abysmal state of AoS (I really hate 4th) I don't think it's going to cause any major shakeups at GW. They will adjust and try something else with AoS, hopefully by unfucking the gameplay.
>>
>>97085483
I would agree if there wasnt another gw fantasy game system seems to capitalize on aos doing poorly
