Tbh, I'm not particularly happy with the green. I plan to tinker with more brown-green shades, probably even some irl military colors. I've also used dark green oil wash, and I think I should have gone with warm brown instead. The same applies to the pouches.

Maybe your brush requires maintenance? Paint builds up over time I recommend cleaning at least once a week but it depends how much you paint.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SJORV5kMJ0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtbgBCG6PkQ

Personally I use vallejo airbrush cleaner in a small container and work it into the bristles and with a little friction I try to break down the built up paint. I also tease between my finger and thumb the brush head to get paint out. After that I use brush soap.

If you do it correctly you should see in the cleaner/soap becoming murky or colored as the built up paint is removed from the brush.

Maybe someone did similar DIY project and can help - I tried making static grass dispenser out of electric flytrap. Did exactly what people on various sites recommend to do, except it does not work. Grass simply land on glue and lie there, even when I keep it very close to the surface. Also keep needle at glue (PVA mixed with water), I know it conduct since it occasionally produce loud crack sound when my shaking hands make mesh connect with surface. Usual case where everyone else do things flawlessly and when I do the same, it fails completely that I got used to already but maybe someone else ran into similar problem before and could help? I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong.

And I definitely won't pay equivalent of 100€ for actual dispenser at shop.
>>
>>97088354
Can't help you with your DIY project. But I completely agree with you on that these things are way overpriced. I made this one and it has been working fine https://makerworld.com/en/models/761430-static-grass-applicator?from=search#profileId-696142

maybe that's an option for you
>>
Do static grass applicators really make a difference?
>>
>>97088361
Interesting idea but I don't understand how it builds up charge.

>>97088396
They do, especially with longer grass. Normally if you would just apply glue and sprinkle grass over the base, it would mostly land flat and stay there, looking like a mess. The idea is to force grass to land upright by introducing weak electric field. Flytraps are popular because they are designed to just do that, between two metal mesh frames so people attach one end to the mesh and another to needle or similar tool, which in turn touch ground (glue). Works flawlessly on YT video's, not at all in my case.

Unless flytraps I can get at shops are just too weak for that effect. Makes sense since most "alternative use" ideas presentations are from US, where safely laws barely apply (similar to how many people from US make plastic pieces flexible with hairdryer - in EU, hairdryers are just that, designed to gently warm and dry wet hair while US ones are apparently full fledged heatguns).

Why not buy premade sheets of static grass?

And without knowing too much - if they're expensive my instinct would be that they're doing *something* it's going to be difficult for an amateur to replicate. Are you realistically going to spend more time and money than it's worth chasing a saving?
>>
>>97088514
Static grass refers to pulling the individual strands upright with static electricity. A sheet defeats the purpose.

Mine wants to do the same thing. She also said she refuses to let me own/play unpainted armies. Send help. She already is planning a two person paint station when we get our place.
>>
>>97088514
>>97088546
I need to place grass over uneven terrain, applying sheets would look very artificial on anything else than, how >>97088551 pointed out, all grass area.

I start to suspect that its the problem with flytrap producing simply too weak voltage. Obviously they did that for safely reasons but Im honestly pissed off by how yet another idea cannot be replicated because "muh safely".

There are some negative ion generators to be build but Im not that experienced with electric stuff - I can only cut and wield this or that cable.

Not really, cannot take it apart right now and do photos but overall it's very simple construction. In fact, I omitted some people suggestion to add resistor between ground pin. But just now checked some guy video and difference is obvious - when I put pin next to mesh, it make loud crack, when that guy placed pin ~2cm from mesh, it produced an arc. In such case resistor makes sense.
>>
>>97088672
I always wondered.. what happens if you rub a balloon on something and use that?
>>
>>97088690
Good call but tried this method and the problem is that without any kind of electricity, grass will land flat, refusing to pierce glue surface and once it does, it won't stand back up. But yeah, the key is to provide static charge somehow.
>>
>>97088708
Welp, time to whip out the tweezers and put the grass in strand by stand.

Took a look at the AK range, their sickly pink would be a decent cold pink to have and can be mixed with a little more white to get a very pake pink highlight color. Salmon looks like a lovely color but the old rose might be a more versatile color. Proacryl pink is close to the sickly pink, but if you can see them in person take a look at the proacryl mahogany. Its a lovely brown that leans a little purple and works great on skin, leather, and wood.

Okay, if I would hold mesh veeeery close to the base, it actually sort of work with grass up to 4mm long, longer ones obviously will need higher voltage. Would need to figure out some alternative to just holding pin with (isolated) pliers since I need both hands to work.

Also, I accidentally short-circuited by touching mesh with finger and right away was glad it's lower voltage than normal. That hurt.

Gonna buy this bundle and some singles. White for example. I'll probably pick up their green fluorescent one too.
Do you guys have any obvious recommendations for general purpose colors?
Probably some greys, some skin, some metals. Can be other brands for metals, washes etc.

Going to be painting the skaventide box, skryre color scheme for the most part. (That dark teal color, maybe some reds, mostly greens/dark greens, copper metals.)
Plan to sacrifice the stormcasts for training purposes so probably some pale blue/silver/grey for the non-metalic testing.

Looking to pick up around 40+ paints. should be well rounded as I plan to take out a long vacation in January to focus on this.
Already ordered a bunch of random D&D figures too. Got some gloss varnish for eyeballs on the beholder and lenses and such.

wait am I supposed to like put something on foam before I prime?
>>
>>97092120

>>
>>97092173
You can't spray paint foam, the solvents in spray paint dissolve the foam. You can brush prime it (though, you might want something more adhesive as a layer even before that, like modgepodge, or plastidip (for whatever reason plasti-dip is okay out of a rattle can).
>>
>>97092178
is airbrush priming fine?
>>
>>97092207
as long as it's acrylic/water-based. Alcohol based might be fine too, test it out I guess. You can spray paint it after you seal it with something like the above suggestions if you want too, you just can't use solvent paints directly on foam.
>>
>>97092210
sounds good. Nearly did an oopsie poopsie there lol. Is that why Army Painter has/had that line of rattle cans specifically for foam?
>>
>>97092215
Yeah probably. Try it out sometime on a scrap so you can see what happens. I haven't done it in like 15 years, but iirc it will dissolve it very aggressively.
>>
>>97092120
> Clan Skryre
Absolutely based anon.

As for the paints, if you are looking for white, try getting Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White, if it’s available in your area. Greys you can always mix with black and white, but if you want one anyway, Neutral Grey could be a nice midpoint, and then you can either make it lighter or darker, according to your needs.

As for metals, I am not really familiar how it looks nowadays, but back when I was starting people generally recommended Vallejo Metal Color (not metallic paints from Model Color range - very important!).
>>
>>97092173
you should use a primer that's specifically for foam or something like latex house paint. foam is porous so it will suck up whatever you put on it as it dries, so you need something that will clog the holes.

I highly recommend looking into oil washes. You just need some tubes of oil paints (these will last you years btw) and some odorless mineral or white spirits. A few plastic cups or metal trays for mixing it all up. Some makeup sponges or decent Q-tips for wiping off the excess. And a couple cheap brushes that will remain oil brushes only.

For skaven I'd pick a black and a brown oil paint for shading metals and ropes and stuff, maybe a dark green or teal for the cloth, a magenta for shading sores and snouts, and a white for preshading those glowy green recessed details like picrel. The great benefit of oil washes is that you have great control over the finished result thanks to their long ass drying time, so you can adjust them as you please until they look just right.
>>
>>97092246
NTA, but do you have any particular brands you would recommend for both oil paints and thinner/white spirits?

>>
>>97092246
what are the pros and cons of oils vs enamels for washes?
>>

enamels for panel lining, and oils for washes. Oils can be decent for both though, but enamels seem better for the panel lining.
>>
>>97090922
>The brown fur looks good to me honestly. Could use a layer of matte varnish maybe
In a vacuum yes, but I think the brown doesn't contrast well with the red of the helmet and cloth and the brass of the weapon. I think I'll bite the bullet and start again.
>>
>>97090987
It's the Arizona ice tee knight!
>>
>>97092295
>any particular brands you would recommend for both oil paints and thinner/white spirits?
Picrel, mainly because it's what I can get easily in my country for a decent price. Any oil paint brand should do the trick, just make sure to avoid the water mixable oil paints. Artist grade paints are a bit more expensive but worth it for the finer pigment grind and better paint behavior when mixed or thinned down. They will last you years if not decades so it's worth paying a little extra for a superior product. A little tube will last you years if not decades.

As for the thinner, most if not all white spirits and mineral spirits will work, even the stuff from your local hardware store. I recommend going with an odorless option, and maybe a big bottle of the cheaper stuff only for cleaning your brushes.

>>97092377
>>97092406
What this anon said is right . However I haven't tried enamels personally because I think oil washes alone work good enough for my needs painting orks. If I was doing Tau or something like that I'd probably get some enamels as well

Why are you glazing with white?>>97092295
For paints I'd recommend a set of shinhan paints. They are good quality fine artist pigments and come in nice and small sizes of 20ml that will still last you years with how little you need for washes or even preglazes. That way you get a nice range of different hues for modulation.
>>
>>97092940
Shading up white essentially. This is on a model where you can't really edge highlight.
>>
>>97093020
What does shading up mean? Surely you'd be shading down and lighting up no?
Glazing just happens to work better for shading than for highlighting.
Use a different shadow colour and you'll be alright for glazing. Glazing white just doesn't work very well. If you really need to blend with white alone then stipple and accept the texture you get. It'll still look much better than a glazed white.

To add to this other brands of odorless mineral spirits that work well are gamblin and mona lisa (sold by speedball). Both are fairly cheap with low/no odor. Gamblin oil paints are also really nice at a few $ a tube more than the winsor and newton paints so they're a good option. Schmincke, williamsburg, and utretcht are all nice paint brands but schmincke and williamsburg are more expensive so not really good for washes. Take the oil pill anon, you won't regret it.

The accelerant in typical spray cans will dissolve the foam, but in my experience since the accelerant gas is much more volatile than the paint itself, simply holding the piece at the maximum effective distance will usually let you spray it without too much trouble.

You can also get purpose-made foam-safe spray primers, or just go old school with brush and paint. Sealing it with PVA or Mod Podge before spraying works too.

I need some second opinion.

So I am making a Skaven army, mostly for Oldhammer painting purposes, but I do not exclude the possibility that I might put them to battle at some point.

The issue I have is that I am not sure which bases to take for them. I could go full retro and do like 20x20 for Clan Rats, go more more with 25x25 or even do round 25 and get some 25x25 adapters so I could field them in more games... thoughts?

I have my Night Goblins and Bretonnians based for Old World, but my largest army are Vampire Counts and I have them on old bases, because I wasn't going to rebase the 50 skeletons I bought 2nd hand.
I made movement trays for Old World, which is essentially just plasticard with flat magnets glued-on spaced for 25mm and with grass mat on top. So the 20mm minis still sit on them perfectly for Old World.

Obviously that lets you play whatever edition, but I have to say that even some of the very old minis have trouble actually fitting on 20mm and sometimes it can be a pain to line up regiments unless you give them all the same pose.

>Is the pro acryl one so much better?
It's fantastic at least, but I haven't tried any AK whites so I can't really compare them. The PA white is leagues above most whites I've tried though, but if you can get ahold of Golden High Flow paints where you get their fluorescents I can also vouch for the Golden High Flow Titanium White, it's very smooth and nice. Liquitex White Ink is also super good for airbrush and I've read some people like to mix it with other white acrylics for better brush coverage and smoother finish but I haven't tried that myself yet.

Vallejo Metal Color Steel and Silver are also excellent. Can't speak for their other types of metals in that range, I use GSW metal pigments mixed with vallejo metal varnish for golds, brass, bronze and copper. Make sure to get Vallejo Metal Color btw, not Vallejo Model Color.

>I think AK has an "ink" and oil range too. Might be easier with that.
Yes you're right. Picrel should probably do the trick. However you might wanna get a big bottle of cheaper odorless white spirits from the hardware store for cleaning your brushes

>How do you guys feel about those pop out palette things? Or do you just mix on the wet palette?
I like those pop out pallets for contrast paints and metallics, especially when I'm mixing my own with metallic pigments. Don't use them much for anything else.

Post-oils.
Purple was too extreme of an all over wash, on the rest i’m gonna do a red-brown and maybe purple for the extreme shadows.

Been painting a bunch for a game of thrones inspired greathelm campaign we're gonna run.

Painting heraldry is fun!

Got stormlords, dorne and iron islands almost completed.

First time making and using sprue goo... I think I made the mistake of using normal glue first then trying to go over it with goo. I believe the gaps already fused/sealed so I was really just pouring on top instead of filling any gaps. My question is, I have sanded this mess down and it feels smooth but will this texture show up when I paint it? I'm not sure if it's just discoloration because of the goo or if I need to sand it more.

Which purple did you use? If I had to guess its dioxizine purple. If you want to try out others madder purple works well for skin tones. Its a transparent reddish purple with good staining but not as much as dioxizine purple so its easier to glaze skin with.

It always leaves a little bit of a funky look, but if it feels smooth after you've sanded it should be good. You can always take your plastic glue and gently rub along where you sanded to smooth it out then give it an overnight to fully dry before priming.

It was diox purple.
My only other purple was Egyptian violet and that’s too good to use on this mini.

Working on this terrain piece, just gotta paint the stone and rubble and maybe add a little wash

Holy Toledo Anon, this is SO MUCH good stuff. A whole Combat Patrol (happy hobby noises) of Ultramarines, a box of Nobz, the BEST Ork novel ever written (listened to the audiobook but I am ecstatic to have a physical copy now), candy canes, liquor chocolates, animal crackers (claimed by my daughter) and chocolate dipped honeycomb candy. What more could a boy want. Thank you so much. This (and the rest of my backlog) should be enough for me to paint all year! A Merry Zoggin' Christmas indeed!
