If you put a 250-lb meatloaf in the oven and then burned it and then followed that by propping it up on a potty-chair to greet you at 11pm each night, you would have some description of these past two weeks. Which is to say the worst I seen since viet napalms. When somebody tells you that there is a level of pain beyond which the human mind cannot retain consciousness, please tell them to write me. In point of fact this lady has not slept more than 3-5 minutes at a stretch since she came to us – that was over two weeks ago and, thanks to medical advances, there is no end in sight; from the waist (waste?) up everything is burned off, ears, nose etc – lower half is untouched and that, I guess, is what keeps her alive. I took one guy in to help me change tubes and he did alright, that is alright till he came out, then he spotted one of the burn nurses (pleasant smiling zombies) eating a can of chili-mac at the desk, and that did it: he flashed on the carpet. It is fucking insane is what it is.

>>97087424plenty of people in 40k lore do kill themselves but also the majority of the human race has a strong belief that they will be protected from the horrors of the warp after death by the Emperor. They believe that the Emperor is God and that he is looking out for their best interests and what he requires in return is faith and service. It's pretty simple to see where their sense of hope comes from when there are actual real manifestations of their faith happening during their lifetimes. The Living saints and other people and situations prove on the regular that the God Emperor is actively effecting reality which if you believe he is God then you would be very motivated and hopeful that their is progress being made in the fight against the ruinous powers and the xeno scourge.

>>97114213Oh, my bad. I assumed you knew what higher cognitive functions are. You've clearly never experienced one, and I apologize for assuming otherwise.
I don't buy sleep as any equivalent of death since continuity of consciousness is maintained in my experience at least. I can plan stuff while I sleep and worldbuild and sometimes even direct what I'm thinking about.Anesthesia however I do worry about breaking continuity. I'm not a medical man so I'd have to really look into how quiet things get upstairs to make a judgement but thinking back to some instances in my childhood I really do wonder if that entity ceased existence or not as a result of anesthesia. Probably not, but one does worry.
>>97087456I have seen unpublished work during conferences that we have been able to remove pig brains and maintain fMRI activity. Its theoretically possible to scoop your brain out and wire it to nociceptors and float you in a tank so you experience nothing but pain
>>97115718nothing about this is eternal, it's just more complicated and probably less effective torture.
>>97115723>>97115718It's certainly a type of cringe no-gain punishment, about as soulless as it gets. Pretty much pure punishment for the sake of punishment until the meat decays due to lacking in a support structure and the parts fail due to the conditions. It is nightmare fuel but I wonder how conscious the brain can really be without any actual nerves
>>97115757>nightmare fuelIt's honestly pretty fucking tepid? We have much more interesting and worse punishments for a brain in a jar than just feeling infinite pain.I have no mouth and I must scream is a good example of like, a default baseline.
>>97115757I'm considering shifting my research that way. I mostly work in pain perception and synaptic formation in fruit flies but the idea of extracting brains and wiring them into an artificial web of nociceptors to maximize the amount of pain they can feel is interesting. You could even manipulate the d1/d2 signaling and serotonin levels to make the perception of time slow down
>>97115784What else and how are you going to do to torture a brain that can't feel anything directly in a jar? Assuming you can directly simulate experience yeah you can trap it in a hellscape or something but at that point it feels more like an experiment than a torture.>>97115813That's pretty interesting but this sort of spook shit I feel is more in the realm of science-fiction than reality. How are you going to get feedback to know the brain is being tortured without a way to get a response? This sort of sick shit brings me back to the Usogui Air Poker game where the B plot is the partners running a torture machine poker gamble where their respective partner loses they get shoved into a stimulant chamber that makes you experience death in certain manners. Probably the most gruesome I saw there was drawing and quartering
>>97115838Of course you trap it in hellscapes, anon.
>>97115838You can detect from activity patterns that are associated with pain but yes it would be hard to tell if the tissue was experiencing pain or just reacting to a stressful stimulus
>>97115853>>97115849I guess the follow-up question you can get to here logically is if there's a purpose to your torture, and is there still a human soul left in that brain or is it just a biological algorithm? How would you even define a soul if you're capable of doing this sort of sick shit? It is pretty interesting. I could never really get into doing research myself but it does sound engaging
>>97115860Have you ever been so gut-wrenchingly sad that you feel like your heart is going to tear itself in two? Like, physically. Makes me wonder if there are neurons in the heart, or if it's just a byproduct of bad-chemicals making the body do weird shit that feeds back into the brain as part of the sorrow.Either way, there'd be ways to simulate that feeling, eternally.
>>97115881Yeah I suppose, you get used to it eventually. I suppose experiencing sadness comes from a biological advantage of valuing the lives of your species but the type of sadness humans can feel over abstract concepts or pets or other things I feel goes a bit beyond that
>>97115838It'd be pretty neat if you could pull it off, imagine being a biotech tycoon with jars of your rivals tortured until the neurons die in your office's basement
>>97115906Unless there's some magical/energy purpose to this suffering, you're basically wasting man hours for nothing other than to feel based

>>97115970Probably, but you're on Earth so what can you do about it
>>97115635>you need higher cognitive function to be aliveThis just in: bugs and jellyfish are undead.
Way too much to reply to at once. Two biggest problems with brain torture jar is 1) at any point the brain can just die from shock and 2) there are neurons in other organs such as the heart and the stomach. Really point 1 is the main issue, the brain not having a support structure also means it'll necrose significantly quicker, every pain signal you send it will tire out every cell and rapidly kill them without true circulatory support.
Increasing serotonin to alter time perception for the brain will also completely counteract the pain signaling as serotonin is a reward chemical. And too much of it kills cells because they get overexcited.Cartel videos have this issue. They severely drug their victims so they don't die from shock to prolong the torture, but the end result is the victim barely reacts or fights back because they're stoned out of their gourd. It takes literal minutes for them to percieve any pain in some cases.
>>97115684>Probably notNot in the slightest. Stream of consciousness is maintained better under anasthesia than getting black-out drunk. Depending on how good your memory is, you can even remember the visual distortions and your train of logic for any silly shit you say while going under or coming out of.
