Arcs, especially the blighted reach campaign.

Magyars vs Celts was a fun matchup, although piss poor plays made it a bit of a grind.
Being able to cancel their raids, and my first unlocked card being a free play, draw 1, + forcing region recall, and packaged with the Magyar innate power handing out unrest, kept the Celts from cycling their deck and making much use of glory. Which, when it finally popped off, not only nabbed them supreme for 11 points, but then next turn the fame card converted all their resources tokens and netted 14 vp, which was terrifying. An output that should have been much higher, had I not been nullifying their raid triggers every other turn.
I can see how the Celt can keep you pinned down while rushing their own deck and having huge point payouts and murdering the market deck. I am both curious to see how much harder they are at higher difficulty and/or matched against a more vulnerable civ.
I think I'll redo the matchup and crank up difficulty one or two levels. While being better at unrest management and way more selective when acquiring/breaking through. The Hungarian deli bloat was unreal.

What are the best "spacial puzzle" games? Games where you need to decipher the board state - that is the essence of the game.
Something like Dominant Species for example.
>>
>>97089026
If it's a nostalgia purchase and its 40 dollars, I think the value of the game is what you make of it. I own Descent 1st edition with 0 intent of ever needing to play it because it's nostalgic to me when I was a kid.

However, is HeroQuest a good game? Not really. It's just very dated in a genre that has had Gloomhaven and that just mogged the entire dungeon crawler genre. Even if you don't like Gloomhaven, there is a pre gloomhaven and a post gloomhaven era in the genre.

Feels like we went through 70% of dragon cards and cave cards. The only ones that really effected players on other turns were the "pay up to 3 eggs to get any 2 resources for each egg. Each opponent may pay 1 egg for any 2 resources."
And whenever that came up, everybody was like, "sure"

There was one(1) moment where someone bought a dragon someone else needed.

By chance I played it on saturday as well, but to my great dismay I must admit that it's one of the few games that work equally well on bga. AffO is a great game, but it is largely a form of enjoyable autism; playing by yourself. Sure, you get 5-6 more strongly contested spaces, and the more experienced you are the bigger the impact of a blocking is...but most of the time our main interaction when playing it physically is banter. I'd care way less about this if the game wasn't such a tablehog and took fucking forever to set up. I'm kind of thankful the danes will be a standalone, 2 xboxhueg boxes are enough

Acquire is still good and was not a breakaway game as it was VERY fucking niche at the time and nowhere near as popular (it was largely unknown) as Monopoly or Catan.

Also Acquire is in no way random like monopoly or Catan and is a good game even though I don't believe that was through design but accident.

What's wrong with ticket to ride?
Good production, simple rules, actual tension on other people's turns, risk taking
But you do have to know how to play it
I played TTR with a family member and his wife, both of them being pretty passionate TTR players (at least as far as casual players go, since they owned a few different versions)
I proceeded to just collect cards in the early game, never take any tickets, claim the longest routes, and absolutely wreck them
think my total score was close to their combined scores
They got very silent during the scoring phase and then look as bewildered as two people can be
>>
>>97091326
>What's wrong with ticket to ride?
Exactly this:
>I proceeded to just collect cards in the early game, never take any tickets, claim the longest routes, and absolutely wreck them
With the additional sore point that if everyone at the table knows to hoard cards the game stagnates once the deck runs low on cards and it takes hours to finish the game.
>>
What is the best "classic" game that still holds up when you get deeper into board games?
>>
>>97091356
I mean, there is a better strategy, where you combine claiming the longest routes with making your aims ambiguous. If all players do that, the end game is very tense and the player who combines offense and defense the best is likely to win
>>
>>97091433
>the end game is very tense

>and the player who combines offense and defense the best is likely to win
More like the player who got the luckiest draw on their tickets during setup.

I got this game called Lexio. It has been released a few times (went by Lectio at one point) and always received praised when released but flopped hard each time, changed publishers, then flopped again.

It's fun as hell. Basically uses numbered tiles (mahjong style tiles) and you are playing poker hands. The lead player lays down a poker hand and the other players have to play the same kind of hand but stronger (either a higher value or a stronger suit) or pass with the last person who played a hand leading the next play.

The scoring is easy enough and a full game is over after four rounds. The scoring can even be done with an actual cash pool making it a legit gambling game. Yet it always failed.

Any other examples of a game that is well received just failing constantly?

I love this game but my wife hates difficult co-ops. In a sense the game is very RNG heavy. Did you draw good level up spells? Did you get good location events to make silver? Did you get decent rerolls in the first round of combat? Are your items actually useful that you found? She's a big fan of Too Many Bones and finds that the mitigation is a bit better in that game. Still love getting this to the table a few times a year.
>>
>>97091372
>still holds up
It comes down to availability. A lot of these games benefit from a modern reprint. Not that the games aren't good but the lack of people playing it and gets the game forgotten. Look at the new Knizia reprints/rethemes for example. T&E and Samurai (?) will get a lot more traction in these threads when the reprint comes out.

>>
>>97092259
You what?
>>
>>97091326
I only played it once and immediately gave it away to the local school. Hated it because it's an almost entirely tactical game where you're pulled around by the card draws and other people taking shit from under your nose.

>got 3 white trains
>need 4 to complete a route
>nothing on the public market
>draw from the face down cards
>green
>draw again
>red
>white card appears on the market
>another player snatches it before I get my turn

It might be fit for playing with little children or boomers, but I see no reason whatsoever to get into it as a hobbyist. I'll take a game where I can at least somewhat plan my turns.

It's been almost 10 years now so if you wanna tell me I'm forgetting something, I am.

Why won’t people consider actual traditional games anymore? Is it too hard to learn rules? Is it that everyone has been successfully programmed to consume plastic and cardboard? Has the marijuana dried your brains and left you with no imagination?
>>
>>97092563
>le imagination
The reason card games were ubiquitous until somewhere in the 90s is because of limitations in mass production and design tools. Nobody was imagining heckin epic wars while playing a trick taking game, it was just an abstract game to play and win against someone else.

If you gave someone a better produced anti-game like Monopoly or Risk to someone 100 years ago, they would jump at it. Oh wait, that's pretty much what happened.
>>
>>97092563
I really like some classic card games but looking up the rules usually gives me AIDS and I can't remember them when at most I get to play them once a year.
>>
>>97092469
If a route hinges on a card that isn't there, you work on another route instead. You might not get a route that matches your cards, but you might fuck over someone else's route that would let them score big.
>>
>>97092563
A shockingly high number of card games are just different variations of getting runs and/or straights or trick taking games. Shit gets old pretty fast once you realize that.
>>
>>97092652
Yeah, that's what I meant by saying the game is entirely tactical. It's either getting lucky and getting what you need, or cutting losses and taking a shit route in order not to stall completely. All based entirely on random card draws.

>you might fuck over someone else's route
Mostly accidentally. Because I'm not picking orange cards just because someone else picked one while I have none.

Call for monthly reports
beginning with mine
I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with this last month, not because of the numbers but because only half of the plays are on tts, and only a couple are multi-hand plays, which means I've played more often irl and with more people
Mezo was a nice discovery, I can see why some call it the best DoaM
Also managed to get a play of a few acres of snow with an actual opponent instead of Myself 2

>>
>>97092737
Well I'll begin by clarifying that DoaM isn't usually my preferred genre, but I've seen many comparing it with Ankh: gods of egypt and saying that it's a better version of it (even though Mezo came out in 2020 and in 2021). I've played both and I enjoy Mezo alot more (no, these two aren't the only DoaMs i've ever played but this is the comparison i've seen talked about)
It's mostly a tactical game, not a strategy one, because it's harder to make long term plans due to its unpredictability
The player "factions" have a power that activate when you move your god and also 5 action cards that give different 2 different options on what you can do plus a third option that is the same across all 5 cards as sort of a back-up plan, but you will only have 3 cards at a time and will only get to use each once per era
The only thing I'm a bit iffy on is that the order in which the conflicts occur is random as opposed to public information that can be switched around with a specific action like in Ankh, but I guess it also adds tension to the game
It also helps that it's a shorter game than Ankh

Sell me on Blood on the Clocktower. I have a social event coming up in a couple of weeks and am considering getting it, but it costs a fuckton.

>Gloomhaven
GH is a shit game that only appeals to retards who think dice are a completely unacceptable resolution mechanic.
90% of the scenarios are "kill everything before time runs out". Time runs out when you completely deck out of cards and that's usually around 10 turns in. Classes are wildly unbalanced too. Since the meat of the game is to kill everyone anybody who has a class that isn't geared around killing shit or making other characters kill shit faster, you got a shit class that also hurts the group because you aren't maximizing killing shit every game round.
Then you got a bunch of fiddly bullshit that doesn't add shit except by being fiddly bullshit (element board is a huge example).

Growth is painfully slow, speed in killing shit makes gaining loot a real bitch because you frequently have to sacrifice a turn just to pick shit up. Just having your character move through loot to grab it would alleviate this problem, but now you just made the thief class even more useless.

I tried on five different occasions to give that game a fair shake in physical form and twice in digital form. The end result, every time was that I would much rather be playing Descent 2e over it and out of the box that thing is also a race against time but it isn't as much of a cumbersome whore as GH is, accomplished the same goal with less, sets up and tears down faster, and plays smoother.

What it adds is insane levels of modularity and control that the Storyteller (an important person who is not actually playing) can have over the game. Any time there's fuzzy information, the ST can choose to what to say, like telling the Washerwoman that one of two players is a town role can mean the other player is also a town role, or the other player is evil, and the player will have no idea who even is that role of the two people. The Demon, main antagonist, sees three roles not in play, chosen by the Storyteller, so he has something to lie about playing as, and here the ST can fudge it big time too, either giving him roles that get game start info that he will have to make up and possibly be wrong about, or more active roles that people will be able to track where he goes and that he lies about protecting Alice because he went to Bob's house and Bob fucking died. Then there's also Outsiders, who win with the town, but offer no help or actively hinder them instead, like the Drunk, who isn't told they're drunk, they get a normal role but it does absolutely nothing, but the ST pretends like its doing something.
But the coolest feature imho, and one you can just incorporate into your normal games of Mafia, is the "final dying wish" vote, after being killed you can still vote in the day phase but only once per game, so you should make it count when good is evenly numbered with evil roles, or when players get indecisive. The voting ritual being styled after a clock is also a cool addition.

>what does it add though?
it adds enough mechanics to produce a compelling deduction puzzle for the good team, and enough tools for evil to manipulate to create dynamic team play for them. lying is important, yet the game doesn't center around cold reading each other.
the three scripts it gives you are endlessly replayable and super well balanced. mechanics like madness (you might get executed if you don't hard claim to be a certain role) are really fun. you can also get into custom scripts and basically make botc support any style of gameplay you wish
there's also a lot of usability that the production and development brings for the storyteller, which is itself a fun and rewarding role

I enjoyed it but not more than Gaia Project (I haven't played Terra Mystica). Racing to build enclosures by physically moving your boats and making it harder to traverse as you play was really fun, and the pseudo draft forcing you to swap leader cards for abilities and turn order added a bit of spice to the straight forward worker placement efficiency engine.

It's a tight economy on both worker spaces and resources you need to make things and upgrade your tableau, not sure if it's more lenient than Gaia Project's, but is more straightforward than GP that's for sure. Played it at the start of the month and haven't really heard much about it again in my circles, maybe it has to do with the theme and overall weight, but I'd be happy to play it again to explore new venues and different leader cards, there are only a couple used per game.

This is the worst part about Werewolf style games, for the most part it's just accusing people randomly and seeing if they will flinch.

People shit on Secret Hitler for some reason, but one thing that game does is it gives you straight up two people who put down the fascist policy. They could have been forced to do it by the draw, or one of them could be a fascist, but they did something that initiates the discussion.

it's fine in it's weight class and category, but it might be a miss anyway because it does have it's faults. I liked it, some of my playgroup didn't.
other games to consider:
Kemet doesn't do the same thing (no dicerolls) but is better as a DoaM war style game, and is still chaotic thanks to the power tiles and combat cards, doesnt have a 2v2 though last i checked.
La Famiglia does kinda the same thing but with bluffing instead of dicerolls, and is only 2v2 (but i think expansions will fix that maybe).
Star Trek Ascendacy does mostly the same thing but way bigger (its a proper 4X that takes a few hours to play, and you win by conquering home systems, or having the big economy and surviving all opponents trying to conquer you) and the 2v2 mode is hidden in the Dominion expansion, but they're doing a reprint of all the expansions plus some fanmade ones(?) printed as official, so you'll probably be able to snatch a copy from everyone who doesnt have enough friends but has too much money

One of the most sleek, streamlined games out there. I found the multitude of unique cards to be too formulaic and the game too uninteractive to really keep my interest despite loving the theme, but I wouldn't say if someone asked me to play it again.
>Darwin's Journey
Been up and down on this one, trending down. Made me realize I started disliking these tight euros with few actions that get ever more combotastic. place dude, get two movement on the island, place a tent, trigger 2 stamps, no more stamps in that row so I get 1 ship movement, this triggers (...). I also don't like that one of the main actions (ship movement) is extremely unrewarding and bland compared to the others. Played it like 6 times and don't really want to do so again.
>Galactic Cruise
Haven't played it
>Civolution
Probably the best game that came out last year. I might like it so much because it very much suprised me; I was sure a Feld Civ builder can only fail. Yet it does everything it sets out to do really well, has very high variance, is also suprisingly skill-based for how volatile it initially seems AND plays in like 2h with 4p. Brilliant design. Biggest negative is that the map play is less interactive than I'd like.

>Voidfall
a FANTASTIC euro with 4x mechanics/themes. It is, however, a game that actually should've used dice for combat though. I think combat is not that enjoyable as is because its so deterministic you know whats going to happen before it starts.

Also teaching the game is aids. It's not hard, but there's 0 reminder text anywhere in favor of icons for FUCKING EVERYTHING. it does have great icnonography tough, you rarely don't know what an icon says, but it is a huge learning curve.
