I would enjoy if factions had options to more generic spells or more options for lores. I would enjoy if endless spells came at a premium but I could pick and choose and also they were more effective, I'd also enjoy if bringing an RoR let you bring their endless spells like Lumineth and Tzeentch get.

1: the new warclans endless spells are decent, although i wish krulez and jawz had their own sets.

2: overall i think wizards are in a good spot in terms of power. effective, but not obscene like 2nd and 3rd edition. i do think they should bring back 6 spells/prayers per lore, and also do a core set of realm lores. lore of shadow, lore of metal, lore of fire, etc like they had in fantasy, just like there's a list of core endless spell manifestation lores available to everyone, there should be a list of core regular lores available to everyone.

yeah the problem is right now its a complete crapshoot, most armies only get a single lore with 3 spells, an if that lore happens to suck (cough cough gloomspite cough cough), you dont have any generic options to fall back on apart from the endless spells which cap out at 3 or 4 casts max, so if you want to run a wizard heavy army (like gitz) but have a lore that sucks (like gitz) you're just kinda up shits creek, and having some generic realm themed core lores would alleviate that a lot, as well as being very thematic for the game
>>
>>98090160
maybe you should have considered not building an identity around a single unit

I get that those were also kind of present in the oldhammer chorf stuff but damn gw that was not the fucking direction to go. Should've just gone with the random jurchen stuff from the wfrpg.
Anyway, anon I think in your situation it's best to just bite the bullet and start converting. Gitmob seems like a good start. Otherwise you'll be stuck with like one new Hobgrot sculpt a decade, if you're lucky.

Not sure how much of a hot take it is, but i would prefer for distinction between normal and endless spell to be removed, and endless spells to just turns to spells with tokens that remain in the game for some time, making them a part of bigger lores which would have both normal spells and spells that use models

I'd say stormcast and especially CoS are the big ones yeah. Soon to be joined by fyreslayers and DoK
I suppose in a way you can also count the soup books? Ironjawz suddenly having to share a tome with kb and bonesplitterz, or the ogres coming together (though they're less distinct obviously).
Other than that there's not much that jumps out to me off the top of my head. Maybe legions of azgorh -> helsmiths though that's obviously a stretch.
Speaking of, bring him back gw.
>>
>>98090659
Orks if you count the unga bunga cavemen orcs getting squatted but that's not really a refresh. DoK have become more weird and scary over time, Fyreslayers are about to basically return to a mix of regular dwarves and crazy dwarves.

Soulblight swapped to having mostly crazy wolf vampires but I don't think that's the primary focus mostly just a subfaction.

Me and you both anon.
I used to make fun of the WFB grogs, but now I long to go back to the beginning.2e was great as a stormcast player, my rules were full of flavour and the lore was a great balance of noblebright with hints of a darker shadow. 4e stripped all the SOVL from the games, and leant way to far into grimdark/edgy dark souls cast. I want to go back.... I hope they retcons everything.

I've never played AoS or any kind of tabletop game for that matter but was thinking of trying it. How much skill is involved? People at my LGS were saying there's like no skill for GW games, it's all luck and list building, but they only play TCG so not sure if I should trust their opinions.
>>
>>98091492
>it's all luck and list building
List building is important, but its weird as a complaint from a TCG player.

luck is something you are supposed to play around.
Single most competitively meaningful GW game in reality is Blood Bowl, yet skillets will say its too random because of the TurnOver mechanic, which ends your turn if you fail an attack/pickup/run/etc roll, being incapable to understand that you are supposed to build your gameplay around avoiding or delaying unlikely rolls.
For AoS this mechanic is random turn order and its consequence of DoubleTurns, the entire point is that you should position yourself with the thought that you dont know who will go first.
Due to the amount of dice usually thrown stuff like basic attacks is kept pretty consistent, failing a cast roll, or one of those "roll x+ or nothing happens" abilities GW shitted out in 4th can fuck you up, but if your success is reliant on a single roll like that, its your fault for putting yourself in a situation like that.

Theres a longer conversation about types of random in gamedesign to be had here, but i dont feel like starting it

Adding a hint of color to each section is a nice touch. Good stuff. I haven't done nearly as much as I did last year, but I've also reached a point in the army where purchases are "what do I want" instead of "what do I need", which REALLY kills the impulse buy urge.
>>98090286
Gorgeous as always, my man. Lizards were my original choice to start AoS with before they showed off IDK, but the urge to buy them is still there. I don't know if I'd want a 3rd Order army, but I really want an army that doesn't require nearly as much thinking as IDK and LRL to play for once. What's your process for those gems, they always look so smooth.
>>98091492
The "skill" that they're talking about is largely game knowledge, listbuilding, and positioning. I think one of the most important things I've learned about playing is that your objective shouldn't be "How do I achieve my plan", but rather "How do I stop the opponent from achieving their plan?". There's some merit to the "it's all luck and listbuilding" you can have a plan all set out perfectly, or position your units exactly like you want to and the dice can still fuck you over, conversely or simultaneously you can encounter a list that you just cannot answer to, especially when combined with what the battleplan wants you to do. 4e is a fun and solid system, but there is a LOT of missing flavor, sadly.

Question for y'all because I'm too stupid to math.
What exactly are the odds of the instakill on Arkhan's Curse of Years?
I know the average damage is 3ish, but my brain is too small past that
>>
>>98091492
one of those cases where the reality really is the cliche: easy to learn, difficult to master.

on the lower end with casual pickup games, its a very straightforward and simple game. push your dudes forward, roll some attacks, try to have more guys standing on the objectives than the opponent, and thats about it. you can pick up and learn the basics of how to play in an afternoon, the core rules themselves are pretty simple

but as you face off against higher skill opponents, you need to be more mindful of planning ahead around objectives and battle tactics, have a better grasp of screening, pinning, how pile ins, counter charges and especially redeploys can be used to deny charges, reposition onto objectives, have a better understanding of what every army and unit does and their interactions, understand how to evaluate your own army to determine which units are performers, sleepers, and duds. understand when to push out and when overextending might get you caught out on a double.

all of those things come with practice, and often unless your opponents a complete cunt, they'll meet you where you are at your skill level and try not to bowl you over too much. most aos players are pretty chill and would prefer a good back and forth game rather than a brutal blowout. i wouldnt expect any kids gloves if you go to a tournament, but in casual games people tend to play more for fun.

i really do recommend if you've never played before, start with spearhead. its smaller but uses the same core rules and mostly the same stats, it plays fast, and its cheaper. its a solidd learning mode and the spearheads they sell work great as a mini army in a box. then once you've got the hang of that, step up to a full 2k game
>>
>>98091629

idk the exact number but a regular opponent of mine has been running arkhan at me for the last 10 years and its incredibly fucking high....at least thats what the 60 man grot squads i've lost to it over the years think

truth, it seems to happen about once every other game. most of the time it does like 3-6 damage, which is still not bad.
>>
>>98091492
also if you want to see a game in motion and get an understanding for what you should be thinking about during a game, this guy has some great videos like battle reports and some advice vids on how he plays, and he does a good job explaining his thinking and tactics, and covers objective play very well.

https://www.youtube.com/@warpfireminis/videos

he's placed moderately well at some pretty big events in the past, so he knows the game, and his videos are usually pretty short and to the point, well edited.
>>
>>98089970
i had those dice. fun to use, pretty impractical because they do really fly off the table. worst part was the paint they used on the claws and teeth and spots wasnt very durable, it rubbed off quite easily.
>>
>>98091492
AoS and 40k are both pretty terrible games to start wargaming with. Unless you have people locally playing an older edition of AoS, stay far away from 4th. It's the worst the game has ever been and has caused a mass exodus in popularity and player count. Unironically Spearhead is more played than the core game it spun off from because of how bad the core gameplay is.
>>
>TQ
1) They're pretty cool
2) it feels to be in an ok place how it plays, I just feel like you need more variety of spells. Also everyone seems to have + to cast and dispelling seems pretty hard. Maybe make it more of a game. You have a pool of dice and need to allocate them, then the dispeller needs to allocate, but they're secret
>>
>>98092135
nah, i've played it during every edition. the actual gameplay of 4th is fine, i like it better than 3rd. especially the newest season which made tactics less of a pain in the ass. i do wish they would bring back random realm rules and terrain power rules though.

the list building sucks, and subfaction design is easily the worst its ever been. warscroll design overall is okay, could be better, could be worse, i think they over use once per (army), it really is only needed for truly game changing effects but instead it gets blanket applied to everything. i would like to see warscroll command abilities come back, sometimes it feels like guys like killabosses and tyrants and other 5 wound non caster foot doofs dont have enough to do.

the game significantly improved some of its design elements though over previous editions. i like the addition of counter charge and redeploy, and the casting and shooting on the opponents turn, made the game more reactive which i think is good. you get decisions on your opponents turn. also they really toned down the long range oppression from shit like lumi sentinels or the spell doms like kroak and teclis and shit, while simultaneously buffing look out sir, so your little utility heroes arent prone to being swept off the board from 36" away anymore and i think thats a huge positive change.

there are things i like better about the older editions, and thinks i disliked about them more. i dont think 4e is the dumpster fire people make it out to be on the table though

Drunken thought of the night

Slaanesh should get a battle formation that requires you to have x amount of generic heros to enable its rule, with that being that among your generic heros they can copy rules from named characters such as glutos, the masque, sigvald, etc etc. you obviously also cannot take named characters in this particular formation, and you can’t have multiple characters pretending to be another on turn 1.

no, that's the thing, gw did 3 different skeleton moulds with identical designs in the span of a few years
and all 3 were out of scale
>>
>>98092910
Okay yeah it is weird, i guess tooling became cheaper/they have enough money to not mind.
There was a AdMech character from Blackstone fortress (i think) which originally came on a sprue shared with some other models, but they later retooled him to sell separetly.

But Moulds have to be replaced once in a while anyway, and if the change isnt drastic, you just tool it differently, they probably have a fully rigged skeletonbase with a bunch of bits made, so they just have to take those models, give them different poses/random new bits, and into production it goes

>Why the fuck did they go with that fugly version anyway?
because they modelled it off the one article where gw shows a conversion for it using a dragon head

still not a beak though
>>
>>98093751
Probably misenterpretation of the paintjob
>>
>>98093653
Because they're retarded and went off of a terrible one-off conversion instead of the official artwork that had already existed for the Coatl AND ignoring an even older model that existed in 2nd ed Fantasy. Fucking jackasses.
>>98093653
I love the mask on the snake. I'd be down if there were both Coatls and feathered land serpents like this.
>>
>>98093751
>>98093796
There was a schizo in /twg/ claiming the reason they did this is because aos was going to use the normal coatl look and gw wouldn't allow them to use it or some shit. Obviously retarded but it was pretty funny seeing him try and convince people it was aos' fault.

Maybe this would better fit the wfg thread but since we had a couple good painters in today I figured I'd ask here, but does anyone know how you'd go about creating the kind of dark gemstone (or whatever) look of the sphinx' skull? And would it work on a smaller scale, like a nornal deathrattle skull?
Most guides I've seen for this model seem to skip that particular look of the stone.
I guess it kind of looks similar to how you'd achieve a marble effect?
>>
Unsure if this thread is the right place to ask this but...

Does anyone play Soulbound???

I've been wanting to try it cause I love the setting but I'm broke and can't find anything online

My usual sources only have the core rules and the occasional adventures, and I'd really like to have access to at least Champions of Order

Is there somewhere I'm missing or is it just that nobody cares enough about the game to put it up in pirate sites?
>>
>>98093411
Both look like total fucking shit.
>>
>>98094729
>would it work on a smaller scale
It probably would but it'd be more difficult since you'd need to scale it down as in make the lines finer and smaller.
>I guess it kind of looks similar to how you'd achieve a marble effect
That's my guess. Can't think of any shortcuts to make it faster or easier though, you'd probably just have to paint a lot of fine lines/squiggles and gradually brighten them up
>>
>>98094729

Seems to me like the midtones are the least prominent part of the paintjob, so you largely do a dark color, lay a thin foundation for the highlights/white with the midtone, and then the highlights/whites will cover most of the midtone.

there is a decent bit of skill in the game, some playing around probabilities but the big one is positioning and movement. Movement is not random at all, and positioning screening to block strong units, tag units in combat, position on objectives to block your opponent, this type of stuff is the main skill of the game. Ignore TCG players, they are vacuous hobby abominations; genuinely cant stand tcg players
>>
I've looked through etsy for female heads and its all just slop. Genuinely disappointing.
>>
>>98096358
Like anything it's trying to reduce the amount of times you have to deal with random chance.

Boost your dice as high as they can go, avoid fights you're gonna lose, make sure your opponent doesn't get to do the shit they want. It's funny that I know all of this but still will get completely bodies because I roll like absolute shit sometimes wherein my opponent crits me into the dirt.

>Fuck slaves to darkness and fuck chosen

Only time I've fought Chosen my Kragnos splatted them into the next dimension. I think I posted a battle report here, we were doing that map wherein the underdog can teleport units between objectives but if there's no room for them they have to walk in from the edge of the board.

Only time I've ever gotten the last paths objective, the one where you've gotta be within 3/4ths of the corners of the map and he zapped my gargs away
>>
>>98096457

slaves is one of the most popular factions in my city and my friend plays it. So slaves is what ive had the most games against by a decent margin in 4th. Tanky, buffs they get for free, wards and 3d6 charges and belakor, very easy mode faction
all the darkoath and demon stuff is pretty whatever though

picrel is very old battle against friend, vampire power rangers managed to take down archeon
>>
>>98096114

>>
>>98096491
I wouldn't mind some more variety but I tend to fight the same folks in the community. So far I've seen more SBGL than anything, I wish I could fight more armies desu.
>>
>>98096491
Slaves are probably the coolest Chaos faction for me. The god devoted armies almost lean too far into their theme and leave out any room for regular Chaos Warriors who happen to exclusively follow one god. I think Slaanesh is the only one who even really has an "equivalent" to Chaos Chosen. Khorne mostly has nude berserkers, Tzeentch is almost all beastmen, and Nurgle seems to have a Chaos Warrior equivalent but not Chosen.
If I were a Chaos boy I'd go Slaves.
>>
>>98096662
It also helps they have the biggest range compared to monogods, you've got a wide variety of options to choose from and can even pick some daemons if you run the Be'lakor list (though I don't know why you would, it kinda sucks and you can't pick greaters)

i think its good that the chaos chosen equivalents are different to each of the monogod factions. putrid blightkings are the most devoted nurgle followers but because of that they arent like super-soldiers in game like chosen are. If each monogod's most devoted were chosen supersoldier equivalents it would make each faction a lot more formulaic 40k tier slop

I'm gonna be honest I don't think any of the death books have been particularly that good, I was excited for FEC but honestly the changes kinda suck compared to what we had before. I'm gonna say something drastic and say noble deeds points were stupid but gave actual incentive to do shit.

NH got nerfed ,SBGL barely got changed, FEC got a sidegrade and lost a bunch of stuff, and OBR got new stuff but had their better stuff get nerf batted.

That's the male protagonist of the idoneth book, though idoneth are just bald in general.
It's a bit inconsistent if akhelians are always bald, but namarti certainly are.
I personally would like it if namarti are born bald, but akhelians have to shave themselves to better maneuver underwater etc. It feeds into the plot hook introduced with mathaela that namarti are closer to the 'true form' of the idoneth, as they are better adapted to their new submarine environment, whereas akhelians are basically still just elves and need to alter their body and use magic to actually survive in the depths.

The game has been capped at 24 tomes since mid 2nd edition (with sons of behemat), and for whatever reason they've decided not to go over that for now. It's why kb didn't get their own tome, or why we only finally got a new one once a slot was freed up by beastmen going the way of the dodo.

What is /aosg/'s opinion on the ""new"" blood knights? I go back and forth between disliking and liking them.
I'd like to make a full skeleton army and I'm trying to think of a good way to do skeleton themed blood knights beyond just replacing their heads with skelly ones. They're so big so I don't think I'd have any choice beyond using the models themselves as a base, but besides the aforementioned headswaps I wouldn't know how to skellify them much.

Played my first 1k point game today. My Nurgle vs DoK. It wasn't too much more complex than spearhead. we didn't use a specific battle pack just put some obj around the map and terrain.

My opponent brought manifestations and I didn't but I still managed to win. I won 27-18 but I think if he didn't have to leave and we played the last round he would have scored more. He brought the dankhold troggoth RoR and charged it into my sloven knights round 1 who gave it strikes last, then I piled in with my Harbinger of decay and killed it. Felt kind of bad but then I whiffed my General's 2+ and 3+ rolls to give my rotswords +1 attacks back to back so their damage really suffered while they still had models to maximize that damage.

Anyway it took us almost 3.5 hours to complete since it was our first time.

Question: The last line of the Unbind ability reads "this reaction cannot be used more than once per casting roll"

what exactly does this mean in context?
