Testing out theDOW onslaught Blood Ravens Red
Apparently one of the many people pestering white dwarf about it managed to get it and shared it, so now it is on eavy archive.

Here is my current wip with that red. I am enjoying it a lot so far. It has more pigment intensity than your average khorne red or Rhinox+Mephiston.

Here is another angle, it does need corrections on the detail but I'll attend that later once I get to progress more with the armor. I havent painted a primarino marino since 2017 so this is like if it where new terrain for me. Ironically this mini is from Dark Imperium.

Felt well enough to break out the airbrush now that the oil is dry, this is the last of the kill team matte varnished. I'll give them a day or so to fully cure then all twelve will go on their bases, get their touchups (feet, Nob's klaw cable, etc.) and weathering finished, and the shadows on the bases adjusted. After that oil dries they'll get a last thin coat of matte varnish to unify the finish and I can finally call the project done, and on to the next.
>>
>>98091013
I just thought Infernal Brush is the one that ran 'Eavy Archive, maybe you know something I don't.

>>
Made progress. Still need to finish highlighting the cloth and then weather everything, but I think the armor is done as far as highlights go. How does it look? This is the first time I've tried using a reference of the model in light to guide my volumetric highlights. I know it's not very apparent on the black armor, but there is a bit of a gradient there. I may need to go higher on the next one.
Tear into it if you'd like.
>>
>>98091060
Yeah I missed the black gradient but it looks good, the scratches draw the eye in a good way.

>>
>>98091069
I'm thinking that next to the scratch highlight I should maybe do a metal paint instead of trying to mark it out in black. Since the under material is just metal would that make sense?
Or maybe even try to double highlight the scratch. Like on a vertical one do the highlight, black and another highlight to make it look like a deep gouge.
>>
>>98090881
whats the problem?
>>
>>98091088
>Since the under material is just metal would that make sense?
The black is more for the shadow of the scratch than the scratch. If anything I would scratch black and highlight it in metal.
I don't get the double highlight but don't worry about it, just experiment with all of them and see what looks good.

Sort of, I think part of the problem is the formation of the rocks and lava looks unnatural coming to a middle point like that.

>>98093332
Also, those glowy paint jobs are usually photographed against a dark/black background for better sellling the effect. Retaking the photo against a black background would help.

They also nearly exclusively use fluo/glowing paints. Which are, again, not lightfast and will not retain that glow effect for too long.

or this?? im looking for a recipe in citadel or vallejo paints basically.

im not sure what the start with, shade with, or if i should go into flesh tone highlights or what im retarded man i just wanna paint word bearers :-Ddd
>>
>>98093894
It happens if there is too much pressure in the pot. Is the tip clogged? Are you storing them in sunlight? Or in a shelf/drawer in sunlight?
>>
>>98093954
Not clogged and they are in a storage case at all times except when im painting, so no sunlight either
>>
>>98093894
Don't be a pig disgusting and keep them clean at all times. It usually happens when paint dries and hardens inside the tip, which, in turn, usually happens when you leave the paint to do the same in the cap.
>>
>>98093894
AK bottles are terrible in my experience. I also got 3 or 4 of them splitting tips, and lot of them clogging up (which is also an issue for TTC bottles).

I've been transferring a lot of paints into some cheap bottles I got from amazon, never had a single issue with them since.

So yeah, definitely a design or batch flaw.
>>
>>98094000
All dropper bottles will clog unless cleaned. That's the price you pay for not having to deal with retarded pots (GW, Tamiya, and such).
>>
>>98094049
I have both old and new vallejo that never clogged. The cheap third party ones I got never clogged despite being filled with the same paint that caused the ak ones to split/clog in just a month or two.
>>
>>98094000
Weird, I've had the opposite issue with my droppers. I'll shake them and take the cap off, but before I even turn them over or squeeze some paint will start coming out and I end up with way more than I want or need on the palette.
As much as I hate GW pots, the one thing they have over droppers is that you can take an absolutely minute amount of paint without needing to put down a whole drop.

174 KB PNG
>>98094125
We had perfect flip top pots that would last decades without drying up...we had it so good bros.
Only issue was the hinge breaking but other than that they were literally perfect.
>>
>>98094125
>but before I even turn them over or squeeze some paint will start coming out
that's one of the things that in the long run cause them to clog or split
>>
>>98094149
I think I've solved it by either tapping it on my desk to knock the paint back down or by giving it quick last spin on my vortex mixer. Either that or it's just because I've used them and there's less paint in the bottles now. More testing is needed.
>>
>>98094112
Strange, I have multiple Vallejo droppers (both MC and GC, both new and old) and they do clog if I don't clean them after using. It's the nature of the beast, it has nothing to do with the paint itself.
>>
Stupid question - why paints for airbrush require special thinner instead of just water, like with normal brush application?
>>
>>98094258
They don't, just use distilled water because tap/well have non-water inclusions whoch cause buildups like calcium or chlorine.
>>
>>98094258
it depends on the paint. acrylics actually suck for airbrushing.
>>
>>98094258
Helps keep the paint thinned and prevent it drying inside the airbrush. Some thicker paints can be thinned easier and more consistently with airbrush thinner. I live in a dry climate so I also use some flow improver to help prevent dry tip.
>>
Is Vallejo model black still considered the best black paint? I would think that pro acryl would have it beat due to the quality of their paint overall. Or even TTC
>>
>>98094258
Because youre not applying them with a brush, are you?
You need airbrush thinner (which usually has flow improver/retarded) because that way the paint doesnt dry before it reaches the miniature.
>>
>>98094408

But outside of that rare occurrence the only other time I could think that brush primer might be useful is if you notice a mold line when painting and your scrape it off. Even then it's probably such a small area that it's not worth putting any primer over since the paint probably won't rub off.
>tl:dr
Brush on primer in any case yes or no?
>>
>>98095480
No, it sucks.
>airbrush
>powergap
>rattlecan
>power abyss
>still nothing
>yep, nothing
>brush on primer
>>
>>98095480
>if you own an airbrush you'll have the primer regardless
>if you can't use rattlecans for some reason, thinned brush-on primer will get the job done, it's just really slow
>it has really good coverage for things like base rims, but there are other, imo better, options for that like acrylic markers
>>
>>98095480
>is it worth using brush on primer outside of the exact use case for brush on primer?
No, like every tool it has its niche and that niche is cleaning up damage and filling in bits that sprays can't reach.

That's a sharp one, m8!

I only use brush on primer these days. I own an airbrush, but between hot summer and freezing winter I can prime anytime with brush on.

That looks awesome. Is it 3D printed? It looks like the side doors are on backwards and they've got that bumpy Nestle Crunch texture you see from 3D print sprue removal.

Done some basic painting on the tracked Repulsor kitbash. Now onto proper weathering.

The sponges that came with my redgrass palette are already wet straight from the plastic package.
... that's odd.

I mean it's cool and all but it kinda just looks like an irl tank at this point, not a warhammer one

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that's what he was going for.
>>
>>98095834
If you've seen other stuff done by RaptorAnon all of his models have a realism angle to them.
>>
I decided to magnetize a model I had already primed and I rubbed a lot of the primer off. Do I need to strip it and then prime, or can I just throw more primer on top?
>>
>>98095963
You can just reprime to cover that area. Unless you goop it on you won't lay it on too thick with just one additional layer.
How did you rub primer off? THat usually sticks better than paint.
>>
>>98095974
It came off fairly easily from normal handling. I do use an air brush to prime so the layers are probably thinner vs. rattlecan.
>>
>>98095963
seconding just priming it again, you'll be fine. People play up the concern about paint buildup, you can repaint the same model a bunch of times without stripping it without really messing it up too badly especially if you have reasonably good thinning habits.
>>
>>98095480
you can also spray in a cup and brush that on if the weather or whatever does not allow for spraying
>>
>>98094794
looking very solid so far
>>
>>98092020
you could still give him some highlights... that is ofc if you feel confident about it. if not then its okay.
>>
searches say that parchment paper is waterproof. so does that ACTUALLY work as wet palette paper? I get the feeling that people say it allows the paint to slowly maintain hidration, but I have a suspicion that it's just temperature regulating like an evaporative cooler.
>>
>>98095963
if your primer is rubbing off just from handling you should ask yourself whether you need better primer. what brand was it?

for the example of that metal kharn that anon is stripping that cost 8 dollars when it released in 96

Is it just my impression or are you using a slightly different green?
>>
>>98097806
You have a good eye, anon. I dropped the darker colder green, and went with actual irl military olives. I think it suits Raptors better. I can give you a list, if you are interested.

Don't do that.

>>
>>98097820
Good to know I wasn't hallucinating

I liked the more saturated, colder green, but this hue fits them just as well and the milsim vibe you're going for. Now you just need to try your hand at black so you can do my templars vehicles
>>
>>98097860
looks about the same as every other nmm tbqh
>>
>>98097820
Very interesting, I thought it looked a bit more desaturated than it did before, but I just chalked it up to camera settings.
Do you have a side by side of one of your older pieces with one of your newer ones with the new green?
>>
>>98097880
I like it, too, but it's too dark of a base to start with.
I'm actually planning to kitbash and paint some Iron Hands later (I still want to do the tracked Impulsor and Dreadnought kitbash for Raptors), so I will gladly share any potential findings about painting black vehicles.

I'll make a photo comparison once I get back home.

Great, I'm done with tanks for the moment I think (got an impulsor, land raider and 2 rep ex) but I just like dreads so I'm likely to get some in the future, looking forward to see how you get them done for some inspo

So far I've been just sponging the dust/weathered effect to give the black some visual interest, plus the usual damage highlight and some dirt or rust here and there
>>
>>98098051
Yeah, black is a tough color to shade and weather without an entire dedicated workflow. I've been reading about using off-white washes with it and basically doing counter-shading with dust accumulation, but I'll have to test that out first.
That said, I love your tonks. The muted black with dark metal looks incredible.
>>
>>98097888
Yeah, tons of other people do it too, and it's bad. You should have 1 primary light source, everything else secondaries. and with some interest in color temperature and various sharp and non-sharp value ramps, not just smooth up and down gradients along the whole length of the blade, you can still do that but you need to change how intense they are, not just make them all similar.
Also generally I would say you should have the top edge of the blade be overall brighter than the bottom edge.

I would advise to look at something like picrel as reference for more interesting NMM. than just making more ups and downs in the gradient. I would even caution to do a sort of less is more. You want to exaggerate things to make it read well but that doesn't just mean adding more gradients. Think of it more like having one overarching gradient, and then adding secondary gradients, they never overpower that main simple one, but they do modulate and add interest to it.

Working (slowly) on my skeleton swat guy, had a minor crash out after a bottle of grey paint was uncooperative but got over it and am now trying to figure out how to put a tinted visor on his helmet since I don't think any kind of wash or glaze is really going to stick to the clear plastic I have

Hot take of the day:
If you don't mix your paints you're just painting by numbers, like an 8 year old.
>>
>>98098301
obviously
inb4 the typical sperg, "just paint the model in flat colours, real light will do the shading for you"
>>
>>98098244
Brown stuff putty. Similar to greenstuff, but holds sharp edges far better and doesn't really retract when it hardens. A bit more malleable too when soft, but has a fairly short working time.

>Look at any pro painter for reference
why not look at a real polished metal object? even if you don't have a sword on hand to reference you probably have a kitchen knife. when you look at real life examples you will find that a single face or plane of an object is going to have the same brightness of reflection, and any modulation you see in a photo is actually a just reflection of the person taking the picture and the flash from his camera.
