What is your favorite Domain of Dread?
>>
thoughts on this? It's meant to be sort of like a healing version of sneak attack
>>
>>98092102
This doesn't feel like a cleric healing feature, nor does it seem like it was ever playtested.

It should also probably be a feat, because it's such a massive powershift to all other healing classes; not giving anyone else access to it makes every other healer obsolete, and giving clerics more power at zero cost is silly.
>>
>nor does it seem like it was ever playtested.

that's because I'm literally just asking if it sounds interesting. That said, I see your point

ngl, I really, really hate cleric. the class has a bunch of cool subclasses, but the core chassis is just flavorless, boring, and has no thematic cohesion or direction. I want to give it that but there's nothing you can do with it without wildly unbalancing it, becuase it's plenty strong already. You can give it ribbons, but ribbons don't do anything
>>
>>98092235
fuck, deleted the >>98092184

that was not intended as a slight. that's me being on autopilot

>but the core chassis is just flavorless, boring, and has no thematic cohesion or direction.
>You can give it ribbons, but ribbons don't do anything

That's exactly what ribbons are for, minor buffs that don't really affect combat but flesh out a theme, like the knowledge domain giving you extra languages. But if you want to give a broader identity to each domain, you can give them new channel divinity options that better fit the theme.

>Healing domain
don't roll the dice and heal the maximum amount from a spell that targets one creature.
>Order domain
you can cast command as a reaction when someone steps within 10 ft. of you
>etc.
>>
>>98092299
some lazy thoughts for the chassis before I turn in

>level 1: Divine Path
>choose whether you get a holy (cleric) or unholy (warlock) spell list
>also choose whether you deal radiant or nercrotic with your features and spells

>level 2: Turn Adversary
>as turn undead, but you choose the creature type when you gain the future (any other than humanoid)

>level 3: Divine Quest
>When you finish a Long Rest, your god gives you a job to do in the next 24 hours. If you accomplish it, you gain inspiration

>level 5: Sear Adversary
>the damage type is based on your divine path
>>
>>98092357
All of these things should be tied to the domain, because good and evil really diminish the cleric identity. Evil clerics do exist; they serve evil gods.

>Divine quest
This one is actually terrible because you're unloading your class feature on the DM, giving them another thing to do/track/prep.

Make instead a table you can roll on that determines the "quest" the cleric needs to take on.

>as a player you have to forgo any interesting character building or mechanical complexity to do it
>if dming where I don't care about it the players beg for levels and want to get to their lvl 7+features
>end up just blazing past those levels or starting on higher ones, completely skipping 2/3 of monsters.
>stuck reskinning goblins with bloaed hp at lvl 12 with a million dice for every little interaction with pure martials finally doing cool shit but that's just a variation of "I swing sword" which has no bearing on the narrative or universe, while the casters are teleporting and acting like gods with a million universe breaking implications in my little lotr-style adventure
>thought draw steel would be the cure
>it's just superhero shit from lvl 1
What I'm trying to say is...I fucking hate casters. You could make do with lvl 3 spell and nothing more for the rest of the game and the scales would be equal. Fuck you.

Part of me agrees because I love catfolk as a concept. They're a fantastic replacement for "wood" elves because cats are naturally agile, great climbers, have amazing senses, and come in a variety of sizes, etc., etc. Not even just wood elves, but cats fit in a bunch of biomes like forest settings, jungle settings, desert settings, and arctic settings.

The other part of me hates them because they make my peepee hard, and they fall into the "i'm not a furry, but..." territory for me.

But I'd prefer catfolk like >>98093449 to neko shit in D&D despite my love for catgirls.

I had a odd thought for a mass combat rule, a way to symbolize you're fighting with a squad of people, is essentially adding a 1d4 to all your rolls, including to your AC and damage reduction, to symbolize them backing you up.
So it's still two units fighting eachother... just adding 1d4 to EVERYTHING to symbolize it's two units fighting eachother.

And then you can sacrifice part of your squad to negate damage, but your maximum roll gets reduced to a 3, then a 2, then a 1, then the support squad is gone. So you can tactically sacrifice them to negate the really big hits.

I posted her a few times but the last thread has been archived.
Context: This is Dark Sun setting specific
She has been thrown around by life.

1. She was born with Templar magic as an Offspring of Abalach-Re
2. Her powers went off and she was mistaken as a runaway trainee and forced to serve as a Templar
3. After a mission gone south, she was sold as a slave
4. During the campaign, shes been thrown through problem after problem
She never had any choice in their path of life.

What's a good half-feat for an 8th level Ranger with 17 DEX who already has Sharpshooter? Thinking mainly about Piercer, but I'm wondering if there are better options. 2014 rules, obviously.

gross. take athlete
>>
fuck it, I'll make room for a cleric core class power budget.
>>
>>98094452
Depending on your race, you could take some of the Xanathar's feats. Elven Accuracy for an Elf/Half-Elf is the obvious one.
Otherwise Skill Expert or Athlete are probably the only real alternatives to Piercer.

I don't think it's promising at all. I'm saying there are like 3 feats that boost your Dex that do more for you than literally nothing.
>>
>>98094631
So Piercer it is, then. Great. I only do piercing damage anyway (longbow/shortswords/daggers)

Why do people still use characters with class levels as NPC opponents? It's really fucking retarded. This isn't 3.5 anymore, you can't do that the same way. People do that shit then wonder why their "epic boss battle" is just a PC getting OTKed and then the "boss" dying before the end of the first round.

A fucking huge barbarian orc, with the typical appearance of WoW orcs, or at least very similar. Green skin, fangs, bald, black beard, fairly young (just beginning his adventure), he stands two and a half meters tall. Bald. Dark eyes. Robust and muscular...
He wears a red cloak, Scale Mail armor, and a magic double-bladed weapon (one blade deals fire damage and the other deals ice damage)
He has a serious expression, because he senses a threat and is ready to defend the weak.
>they'd have and religious symbols too
NO ONE!!! HE DOESN'T FOLLOW ANY GOD
He believes in justice, protecting the weak, ending evil, helping those in need, and protecting children at all costs. His orcish blood boils with rage when he sees evil taking advantage of the weak and defenseless.

When Hasbro decides D&D is so under-monetized that it is not worth creating content for, they decide to sell it to someone else. That will be the golden age of modern D&D. It was promised to us 3000 years ago.
>>
>>98095761
>When Hasbro decides D&D is so under-monetized
Which is weird, since WotC is basically Hasbro's only profitable division, yet they abuse the fuck out of them, which prompted the MtG:A section to Unionize.

Can I get some feedback / thoughts on this magic item? Its one of 7 legendary dragon horns that was part of an evil necromantic artefact that a bunch of different forces are in a race to reassemble. So basically just my central plot mcguffins. This is the first one the party will come across at level 7 in a few sessions. I want it to be good, and a bit OP but also a bit scary to use as players, and terrifying to consider what a large evil group could accomplish with it.

I'd add simple weapons to the ascetic, but I'd move its WIS to attack/damage rolls part to 3rd level. Divine omen is stacked for no reason. Clerics get plenty of spells; you don't need to shove spells clerics can already learn on their own onto every cleric and then also give them free castings of the spell.

spark of blessing is fine as long as you're still concentrating on the bless spell effect
>>
>>98095893
In your games does anyone make death saves except for the players? in my group at least, we'd collectively agree to dispose of the horn to anyone we trust. Once-a-day legendary resistance is not worth basically giving the whole party disadvantage on death saving throws.

WoTC is their cash cow. The suits don't realise magic and D&D are very different things. To them it's all just nerd shit played by white dudes. I despise D&D beyond. In my CoS game my players all used it so I had to make custom magic items whenever I made my own.

Just get a fucking excel sheet or word doc and some pdfs or the wiki. Literally all you need now that the art is trash.

In MtG the non woke art is now pay walled by special editions. I almost wish they'd do the same with D&D. I guess they cover up the Woke cover art but inside still looks like a street corner in LA with nigs, poos, beaners etc everywhere.
>>
>>98096101
>The suits don't realise magic and D&D are very different things
Then why did they set separate sales goals for them? Not being able to use MtG money for D&D is why we went from the gigantic library of 3rd/3.5e to the pathetic release schedule of 2024.
>>
>>98096099
Only the players and npc allies do death saves, that aspect is directly meant to be a downside to the item, counterbalanced by the access to dominate monster and a veritable one time ever nuke button, but I do see what you mean it is pretty rough. Do you have any better ideas on a thematically similar thing to show the horn is hungry for souls and has an aura of general evilness?

Ideally I don't want the party to be giving it away because there are several cults and different organizations that are trying to collect them all for nefarious stuff and the party has already come across historic recounts of people trying to hide these away and being found and killed for them. I want it to feel too dangerous to consider letting anyone else have because if you were a bbeg with a disposable army of mooks and had the horn, the downside of being able to use the soul bind instant kill button only one time per person doesnt matter when you can give it to your most fanatical followers to enact your will and do crazy assassinations and such.
>>
>>98096099
>>98096153
Am I just overcooking it, should I just completely cut the disadvantage on death saves and trust the remainder of the abilities already sell the idea of corruption and death and personal cost from use.
>>
>>98096153
>>98096266
Limiting the death saves to the attuned character is a good start.
>spell cast
The attuned creature gets two spells. thaumaturgy and Fear
>You can cast the thaumaturgy cantrip as a free action, granting you the altered eyes, booming voice, and fire play effects all at once without components. While active, you have advantage on intimidation checks. The altered eyes are draconic in nature.
>spending 3 charges, you can cast fear, with a 20ft cone or a 10 ft. radius, (excluding yourself), and it's described as you blowing into the horn and a dragon's roar being released.
>the more souls it eats, the more effects the player gets
You grow scales on certain places on your body, similar to the sorcerer subclass. +1 armor
>the more souls it eats, the more effects the player gets
+1 AC
>the more souls it eats, the more effects the player gets
now it builds up to dominate monster

>dominate monster
Straight out of the box is quite terrible since it also eats away at your HP. Let each soul you grant the horn allow the user to regain a point of lost HP. So it's like they form a dependency on the item like a drug. They need it to restore lost hit points on their big powerful spell.

Also, try this gragon greed flaw
>Your mind is tethered to an insatiable avarice that awakens during moments of intense subjugation. Whenever you use the horn to cast a spell, a subconscious compulsion takes hold of you. You secretly pocket 2d4 gold pieces from your own inventory and hide them away. This gold vanishes from your coin purse immediately, and you have no conscious memory of taking or concealing it. You must spend 1 hour of your long rest every night counting these coins in secret.
>>
>>98096015
made the following changes

>ascetic: instead of improved unarmed strikes, you gain a speed boost of 10 feet
>theurgist: replaced with Invoker: you gain a bonus cantrip, and can target two adjacent creatures with your single-target damage cantrips

As for Divine Omens, the reason I included that was that most players never use bother to prepare these spells, let alone use them. I wanted to make it easier for players to interact with their god.
>>
I wish this Cleric had more of a gimmick. Simply making its more interesting and powerful seems like a huge waste
>>
>>98096309
>ascetic
So it's just unarmored defense and a speed boost? Not bad. But make sure it's clear that they cna still weild a shield unless its your intent to remove the cleric's shield.
question about the invoker. Is it your intention to allow the power of God to affect ANY cantrip the cleric might learn, even from an ungodly source? or is it cleric-only cantrips?
>>
>>98096320
>the light cantrip
You could alter it to 40ft of bright light with WIS number of instances of the power-up at any time instead of just 1. Currently it gives 20ft of bright and 20ft of dim, and people without darkvision see anything in dim light with disadvantage.
>>
>>98096346
>So it's just unarmored defense and a speed boost? Not bad. But make sure it's clear that they cna still weild a shield unless its your intent to remove the cleric's shield.

It's supposed to be the monastic side of cleric, so it's monk features. That means no shield. I might give it an AC buff to compensate, but then people will bitch that it's tankier than a monk, even though it already was to begin with

>>98096365
sure thing
